My mutant power is a healthy amount of ignorance. It protects me from realizing just how crushing and soul devouring my job really is...crap.

First, strip clubs have existed FOREVER. Since guys realized they like seeing women undress, there has been places they could go to see it.

Second, there has also been female agents in service for a long time. But there roles are not as promoted as they are now. Men never truly expected women to be highly trained spies during those times. male chauvinism at it's finest. This made them great spies. But they were never really given their due until much later.

Third, this movie is so awesome that it deletes the terrible X-3 and Wolverine movies from canon. Hallelujah!

Fourth, the movies are their own canon. Sort of like Ultimate Universe or Year One. So they can have their own history from the original comics and just take inspirations from the originals. Nightcrawler might end up coming from somewhere else entirely. And like comics, thank God you can retcon.

SPOILER! Loved the Wolverine cameo the best. Remembering it makes me laugh still. END SPOILER

Even though I like both "The Last Stand" and "Origins: Wolverine," I think it was a smart move that Fox and Marvel desided to refresh the X-Men film series. I really enjoy this film.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, it made me really happy to see the X-Men franchise revived after the last two disasters.

I actually loved the look and costumes. Not the near porn part of it, but the camp. They were super campy outfits. Great.
Also, while Mad Men may be popular, lots of people don't watch it. I saw 1/2 an episode and decided that it was something I could never ever ever watch. It was terrible. It physically hurt me.

So is it 100% accurate in the outfits, it is great comic/campy look.
(also the plot was good and all that).

Oh, and on Dead Bro Walking, they were all minorities. (also Eric is a Jew in the 1960s). So yes, they have two visible minorities who get it, but that technically covers all of them in a way (is beast "white"?)

Sorry to double post, but some stuff to add.

You are 100% right the last 10 minutes blow it. They do cut off where another movie could have done some great development/change. But on the other hand, they miss the problems with the other marvel movies lately where nothing changes over the entire thing. (each movie is like 1 movie).

Yea, the bad guys were somewhat useless.
  • Blues
they were so powerful they pretty much killed the entire cia
  • rogers88
sorry but what test? You said it kind of quickly...
  • trlkly
    avatar
The Bechdel test. It's a test to decide whether there are any real female characters in your movie, and not just women who are props for the men. It's surprisingly uncommon for a movie to pass this simple test.

    Full definition:
A movie that has at least two women in it who talk to each other about something other than a man.

This review, has made me appreciate Nostalgia Chick 10x more than ever before. And it's not like I didn't like her before.

I wish I could better articulate what I liked about this. I can only point out that it made me laugh while at the same time informing, and you come off seeming like one of my (intellectual) friends.

Please do more contemporaneous vlogs about movies you've recently seen.
  • Vismutti
    avatar
I totally support this: more vlogs! I mean, proper reviews are great and all, but it's fun to have these more relaxed videos too, it just makes me as a viewer feel closer to the video producers. Not that I want vlogs to take the place of scripted videos; just to have a vlog every now and then.

Oh and it's just so much fun seeing Lindsay and Nella talk naturally. Damn, it makes me feel like I'd love to talk about nerdy things with them. They're so much fun.
  • TheBlitzkrieg  - I actually ADORED the film
    avatar
That being said, I know EXACTLY how they feel: Love it for a film, hate it cause now they gotta use the sequel to fix all the plotholes: Charles isn't supposed to be crippled til he meets Jean and Cyclops and the like, and unless they do the Brood storyline (doubtful), they're boned, number 1. Number 2, if they're going by the previous film timelines, then they have to pretty much make Magneto and Charles buddies again because of their own continuity (which is do-able given the fact Magneto flip flops sides worse than a politician sometimes).

Thirdly, HAVOK IS CYCLOPS' YOUNGER BROTHER!!! If this is 1962, and Cyclops is 30 in the 2000s, that would have to make Havok the dad (NO SENSE) and that raises one all important question: WHO IN THE BLUEST OF BLUE HELLS (No pun intended for blue ppls) is gonna be the mom?! Huge Cyclops fan (or mark if you will) but I'm glad that Havok was used with more dignity than Cyke got in X2 and 3 (SUCK IT WOLVERINE! Though I loved the cameo) So yeah, I'm confuzzled about it whether I love or hate it.
  • Blues
Those aren't points. Havok might just be some related guy or not, doesn't matter. Charles was crippled long before he met cyclops shortly after meeting ororo, but the comics timeline has nothing to do with the movies. your second point isn't necessary either, they don't have to but they can, they already like each other as much in the first films, and there was no past backstory about them that this movie didn't cover
  • TheBlitzkrieg  - For the sake of their own continuity
    avatar
For continuity of its own films, Cyclops met Charles (in Wolverine) and he was totally standing when he did. Second, Charles was totally walking in the beginning of X3, which was said to be 20 years prior to the film's setting, aka. 1986 or something (Wolverine is set in 1985). And the fact that Magneto helped build Cerebro with Charles IN THE DAMN MANSION, he would HAVE to buddy buddy again, also because, well, as I said THEY MET JEAN TOGETHER AND WERE CLEARLY FRIENDS.

Two massive plotholes that are going to need more than just duct tape to fix. Also, second time through, I saw Storm AND Cyclops as kids in Cerebro, and I said "Wait a minute, WHAT?!" Cause that would make them in their late 30s/40s come the main trilogy, which ain't right cause Cyclops AND Storm are only teenagers when they meet Charles in Wolverine. So for the sake of their own continuity, this will make it very awkward to say the least of how they get out of this one.

And ftr, I already know that the films do not follow the comic books very well, hence why, Cyclops aside being a huge fan of the character, I didn't really talk about the comics. Only reason I brought up the Brood was cause in that storyline, Charles loses his body and gets a new one cloned for him (an idea floating around from X3)because Charles is clearly able to walk long after he went bald. Implying he got crippled sometime in the 90s.

I really enjoyed this movie. In fact, I like all of them(Yes, even Wolverine). I honestly think this is the second best in the series(the first being X-men United). There was so much to enjoy about this movie.
And the cameos worked really well.
  • YoSafBridge  - Nightcrawler YES!
    avatar
When you said you liked the second movie because it had Nightcrawler in it I laughed my butt off.

You said that in the EXACT way that I say it. I am NOT a recovering X-Men fangirl...I never fell off the wagon. Hell, I saw X3 AND Wolverine Origins, winced and moved on, telling myself that AT LEAST I had the comics (Plus; Ryan Reynolds was a great WADE WILSON...Deadpool made no appearance in that movie, I've retconned their sad attempt at including him out of existence, but his Wade was spot on). It didn't hurt that Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run was happening during the time period that X3 was released in, and that was of the best X-Men story arcs I'd read since the Classics. The movies may have been crap, but the comics were still awesome.

I was VERY close to falling out of the fandom recently though...they killed off Nightcrawler a while back and I just have a hard time even trying to stick around with the comics when my favourite guy is gone; the guy that I started reading comics for, the first comic book character I taught myself to draw freehand, the character I had elaborate fantasies about when I was a young, young girl (not those kinds of fantasies, I was 12...okay, not usually those kinds of fantasies)

I'm having a hard time even becoming psyched about new comics now that my man Kurt has no chance of reappearing. I'm still there for Deadpool, Beast, Emma Frost and Wolverine. But much as I love those guys; not a one of them touches my epic love affair with Nightcrawler that spans over a decade. I'm not usually a fan of convoluted and unneeded resurrections of characters...but they can't bring Kurt back fast enough.

This movie TOTALLY made me remember why I love X-Men in the first place though; it was fun, it was interesting, it was well crafted and it made me remember the good times I had. I'm so glad I went to see it despite my doubts (it was definitely a fan loyalty thing)

I doubt I will ever stop loving X-Men; it was one of my first geeky obsessions (okay...so it was technically my fourth long-lasting geeky obsession; I've been a geek for a long damn time) and it introduced me to this whole new world of comic books that actually ultimately led me to this website (first review I ever stumbled upon was Linkara's review of X-Men #423...I'd just read the comic, thought 'WTF did they do to my Nightcrawler?' and googled that shit to make sure everyone else agreed...that was about 2 years ago and the rest is history)

I love you X-Men. Always have. Always will.

This post was just one long love note to a comic book series isn't it? I need to stop spending my Saturday nights doing this...

Went to see it last night, kevin bacon was awesome i agree about the last 10 mins it was rushed and they could have done a lot more with it in a sequel, its far better than wolverine or x3, i didn't give up on x-men during x-3 but i was very disappointed in wolverine, they even screwed up some basics in wolverine. The adamantium scene for example. I would have totally joined the evil kevin bacon squad too. What about everyone else, goodie or baddie whats your preference if you had to choose? :D

Your the third group to say that this latest X-men movie is good?!
    I am so conflicted!

Because the last two X-men movies just sucked so hard. And when I saw the trailer for this one.
I thought, "Your not fooling me this time."
I guess I'll still see it, either I'll rent it, or see it in the dollar theater.

This was a great video, I love watching you guys just being your self's, and talking about what you love.
    Thanks again ladies.

The thing that struck me was the fact they gave Mystique no less than 3 love interests...none of them being Azael.

The other bad guys were seriously undeveloped. I had no idea the tornado guy was called Riptide and beside Shaw and Frost they didn't hardly speak.

I think Nessa is right, that they panicked about possibly not getting another film.

All in all, decent film that was in canon with the 2 good X-men films and introduced some characters from the comics. I really loved the Cuban missile crisis setting too.
  • e33laf
You guys should really do these types non scripted, off the cuff reviews more often. Not that I don't enjoy the scripted videos (the Les Mis review was excellent), but this was such a nice change of pace.

P.S. My sister and I saw X-Men: First Class Friday night and we both really enjoyed it (though I can also see the merit in the flaws you mentioned)

I feel you. There's a lot to love and hate, but there's also moments where you both love and hate at the same time. It's all very confusing.
  • YouAskedForIt
For the most part, the end was rushed. Not in terms of the movie, but yes, the story. I felt the movie had a little too long of a third act, but also felt it was necessary for the flim(?) They've taken many liberties with the structure of the source material, so I don't expect much except for presence of characters (it's easy for me since I didn't read much of the comics at all). Gambit for instance, squeezed between the written stories, and shot off like a wine bottle cork. There's no real incentive to bring him back other than fan appeal. Darwin was killed only because of his self-reference to evolution 1.0, where now we are dealing with evolution 2.0. Erik as a character was developed much better than Wolverine, but there's not much to talk about Wolverine (concerning X-men, not X-men Origins). The movie did fine with him, and I think the problem was that he was never a good guy to begin with. IDK what you ladies were talking about, because I totally got an Austin Powers vibe going on. The war room scenes kind of reminded me of the start of Pineapple Express though. Kevin Bacon was awesome, and although they didn't need to, they could have explained how the power turned him young.
  • Metawell

Darwin was introduced about the time of Third Summers Brother Vulcan (Gabriel Summers) his power was to basically evolve to any situation such as water breathing or to teleport away from danger he cannot evolve against.

As for Angel.. one word for you.. Beak.. her husband.. creepy (She has kids during her time at the X School)

Mystique is about as old was Wolverine, since we have seen flash backs of her and her lover Destiny in the old west like 1800s.

I must admit, I really enjoyed your video, and I thought your opinions concerning the film were engaging and mostly on the nose...

    BUT!!!

... I can't help but feel that you're overreacting just a bit. Sure, the last ten minutes are rushed, but not so much that they become a deal breaker! Rather, they make the film self-contained-- I think the filmmakers really did doubt that they could pull a sequel out of this film, and so they wanted to end on the strongest note possible (specifically, Magneto's turn to darkness and Mystique's defection). By itself, this is a perfect prequel to the first two X-films (I couldn't help but notice that they ignored all the continuity from movies three and four).

Besides, decompressing a story to fit into film after film is becoming an annoying trend in Hollywood franchises (thanks a LOT, Lucas and Jackson!). Sure, Xavier and Eric could have used a movie or two to develop a stronger friendship (and therefore a more dramatic rivalry), but that would have weakened the climax of THIS film. What would the ending have been if Magneto had stayed with the team? (Well, okay, Charles could have talked him out of destroying the warships, thereby strengthening the bond between the two and sowing the seeds for greater drama later on, but I liked how it turned out anyway-- Magneto's turn to evil made sense in his arc, even if it shortens the time he and Charles could have been friends.)

My point is, the film shouldn't have had to be planned as a freaking trilogy to be effective. Sometimes the story is better when it's told succinctly.

I love the X-Men. I hated The Last Stand and Wolverine bored me to tears. But I felt no rage while watching First Class-- quite the opposite, actually. It stands ON ITS OWN as a great film and a solid adaptation, and frankly, I'm hoping they don't DO a sequel. Not every good movie needs one.

(But if they do, hey, there's always Alex Summers' relationship to Scott and Mystique's relationship with Azazel they could deal with. Or maybe we'll get a villain who ISN'T Magneto, and a whole new set of interpersonal conflicts. Who knows? Charles and Eric could well remain uneasy friends throughout the years-- a lot can happen in four decades.)

I really loved this movie, I actually think it's better than all the other X-Men movies (I haven't seen Wolverine but I think it quite easily beats that).

I definitely can see what you mean about it not feeling like the 60's, when compared to Mad Men (which is of course an extra fun comparison because of January Jones ... at least she can bring us that note of amusement). But I don't really have an issue with the costuming at the Hellfire Club mainly because it's classic Emma Frost character design, which is the one thing with her character they got right.

And the last ten minutes didn't really bother me either. They just didn't feel that rushed, though I was completely expecting Xavier to get paralyzed and have it be Magneto's fault.

One thing that I particularly liked was showing just how powerful Xavier's telepathy was because you usually don't get to see that, since he's the mentor and generally not out on the front lines in any of the incarnations I've seen.

Okay uh ... that's about it. Yes, it has flaws, but honestly I feel like most of the flaws this one had the other X-Men movies had too (mainly having too many characters to really function and so you end up with that wind guy who never even has a line, IIRC) and the good parts of it are REALLY good. Loved the historical tie-in and I just think everything about that gelled together perfectly. And so yes, as a whole, I think it's the best X-Men movie they've made so far.

OK, I havent seen the movie, but will (I live in finland, everything is a bit slow here.....) and what i heard you say, were something you SHOULD look at. I'm very interested in costumedesigning in play and movies, I have research the 1900 century so well that I know more than just the basics of the fashion in different times during that, so I will be cheking out the clothes.

When I see the movie, I will tell my own oppinnion. I am a x-men fan, and the franchise has broken my heart some times, but I dont mind them so much any more, I just look in to the past, and ignore the movies and the comics that are pushed (but watch them and read them, but I jsut go "meh, not good, whats on the telly?" and erase them from my memory)

I hope you will put out more movie reviews like all the other movie reviewers here, like Doug, Brad, Noah (I dont know if his current movie reviewes go here, I just watch them on his site so yeah...) and I was so happy that FINALLY!!!! female reviews! want moar! you disgussed the whole thing like me and my friends would! and men AND women point out different things in movies, they notise some things that the other doesent nessesarily notise OR remembers.

Just a tought... wouldent it have been awsom, if they had desided to use a different villain in the movie, and pushed the movie in to 2012? just imagine the advertisement for THAT villain of the movie!?!?!??! Any one seeing where im going with this?

Woo! Gotta do this in list form in order to contain my thoughts.

    1) Totally with you on the "Magneto as Wolverine" thing, and Xavier was, funnily enough, totally his Sabertooth (the Liev Schrieber one). Considering that the next X-Men Origins movie would have been Magneto if Wolverine hadn't tanked, they may have recycled the script. This is kinda unfortunate, since a lot of folks on sites I frequent think Magneto was right. look, just because he is sympathetic doesn't make his actions right..

    2) To combine two of your peeves into one: So Darwin, a black man in the 1960s, can walk around a government facility and nobody bats an eye until the mutant thing appears? Yeah I get that mutants are a considerable threat comparatively, but before the events in the movie, they had no idea mutants were even real.

    3) Also, Darwin is from X-Men: Deadly Genesis (after Morrison's run I believe), which introduced the third Summers brother and began a nice derailment for Xavier. I don't like thinking about that storyline.

    4) Not only did the ending feel rushed, but they also decided that NUCLEAR-POWERED KEVIN BACON VS. MAGNETO was not a fight people wanted to see. Yeah, the whole coin thing made some sense, and was more emotionally resonant, but dammit, I wanna see them sumbitches blow some shit up!

    5) Regardless of all that, I still really liked it, coming down from loving it. Still waiting for an X-Men movie that is about an actual TEAM instead of This Guy (and Some Other Folk).

    6) Last thing, apparently being cast in an X-Men movie means you get laid like nobody's business. I wanna look into that.
