Ah, the drinking game. A way to turn any bad movie viewing into a drunk bad moive viewing.
...Alright, I understand how you have to take a few liberties with the story, what with it being a kids movie, but come on. Hera tried to kill Hercules, like, at least 5 times.
Also, he was really named Heracles. (Mythology Nerd)

07.31.2010 - 04:23 | mr_rubinoRemember when they remade Clash of the Titans and made Hades the villain instead of an ally? Yeah, that was like 4 months ago. We're that stupid as a species.
EDIT: *sigh* Oh Makeover Naiad, you mischievous troublemaker.

Hades wasn't even in the origional Clash of the Titans! The main villain was Calibos, and in part Zues because he was punishing both Calibos and Andromeda for Calibos' murder of Zues' flying horses, save for Pegasus.
That's right. The origional has actual DEAPTH rather than fucking flat stock characters like in the remake!
-
08.20.2010 - 14:10 | mr_rubinoHe was in for a bit. Helmet of invisibility. Or am I remembering wrong?
Nonetheless, if you wanted unabashedly smash a quasi-God-vs-Devil story onto Greek mythology to make the average idiot's nose not bleed, Cronus would be perfect for the "fighting to get out of Hell and destroy Heaven" role. And he's a Titan! That'd take the number of Titans in either Clash of the Titans to... 1.

Yeah, that would be interesting, but maybe they didn't want to make a rip-off of the Hercules TV-Series (with Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst) where Hera was quite evil - against what the mythology tells us...
Zeus would have been interesting and I'm pretty sure it may have effected the game God of War 8 years later, where Zeus is the bad guy. Funny, while I was saying that, I just came to the conclusion that in God of War almost anyone is in a way evil...even the "Hero".
Anyway, the only thing I really, really, really liked about this Hercules Movie, is Hades (voiced by James Woods). He's so much fun to watch... =D

Heracles (Glory/Pride of Hera, what a backhand, no wonder bitch wanted him dead) was the proper Greek name. The Romanized name was Hercules, during the period where the Romans adopted the Greek pantheon they added to the mythos of this character.
Because the Roman pantheon is more identifiable by our generation (due to the renewed interest in 'classical' culture circa 1750-1825) Disney chose this spelling. If you really have an interest in Mythology you can study if formally, it's a lot of fun.

Actually, the Greek hero was named Heracles (Herakles). When the Romans invaded Greece and adopted their Gods and legends it became Hercules (even in Greece). To say one is more correct than the other is not necessarily true. But it doesn't matter what name they gave the movie because this IS NOT the myth of Hercules(Hera[c/k]les)!

from what i remember Achilles was Nye unkillable but not completely so, he was the song of a human and goddess and was dipped into the river Styx, save for the heel, a god gave one of his enemys a poison arrow (during the Trojan war), and shot him in the heel, killed him.
he was damn close to a god, but overall was just a demi god.
fucking powerful, but still killable.

I....Have some issues with this one.
First the gospel. It actually does work to an extent. The Greek Chorus is a thing done in ancient plays and it works well.
Next is the I Want song, Go the Distance. It's not about him wanting adoration and the like, not completely. It's more about him wanting a place where he belongs. It's slightly foreshadowing of how he gets later, but it also is more about what he's really wanting, his frustrations about being an outcast.
Now Hades. He had no reason to believe Pain and Panic failed. They were bumbling idiots, but they did their job for the most part. I do see the failure in logic in him not realizing Herc died as a baby, but then again....Lots of people die, so he can't see every dead person going in.
The movie isn't perfect, yes, but it kinda feels like a stretch to me on those three areas. Take it with a grain of salt, I know this is supposed to be a comedy and all, so you might know this all already.
Edit: Also, almost forgot. I like seeing your friends in videos, it's always great and all but...There's a reason Doug doesn't use Rob and Bhargav every video. Too much and it starts to kinda lose any feeling. Maybe save them for occasional use? Again, grain of salt, only my opinion.
-
07.31.2010 - 08:15 | GoodguyAI feel that this is her own thing and power to her for it. She likes having many people in her videos because that's how she feels her humor can flow. At least it's been one video since she's had some friends over (Dune). I support whatever Lyndsey wants to use as a driving force.
-
07.31.2010 - 09:49 | Captain Freetimeā¢Oh I do agree. It's her choice in the end. This is purely in my opinion. It just feels that whenever she brings in friends it stops being a Nostalgia Chick episode. I enjoyed the first episode that brought Nella in (Labyrinth, right?) But most episodes since then, I've more or less been wanting it to JUST be her reviewing the material alone.
What she does is entirely up to her, but I wanted to try and make some criticism, because I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Not everyone will agree with the friends thing and hey, more power to them.

But that doesn't really answer why the choice of Gospel style music. Why not something more ancient sounding and epic? Or even using Greek modes?
The only thing I can think of is that Hercules is a son of a god, and...well, you figure out the rest.
But still, heroic tales of ancient Greek demigods doesn't really match well with Gospel music. I keep expecting James Brown to come out, and John Belushi suddenly having a mission from Gahd.
-
07.31.2010 - 16:27 | Captain Freetimeā¢I'll give ya that. I guess that part is just a sense of personal taste. For me, my mind leaps from choir to gospel. Probably not that way for everyone.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Sometimes it feels like in an attempt of humor she misses part of the point of the movie.
It's like, the gimmicks are fun but the point is to tell us about the movie first, make us laugh second.
What bothers me personally is the lack of chronological order. Doug really does the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, middle, last thing. Jumping all around gets confusing if you've never seen the movie before. (Luckily I have seen it, but that's what bugged me with the Grease review too. A lot was missed because of a gimmick.)

Hehehe, oh yeah, this movie.
I didn't really watch it when I was little(At least, I don't remember doing so) but I did watch it twice in my middle/high school
Once for Latin class and once for Greek class. XD
Of course, my old Greek teacher hated the fuck out of the movie for getting its mythology wrong, but I agree that it's pretty obvious that'd happen for a kids movie. (Also, in the original Greek version, he's named Herakles.)
However, I admit I never really pointed out all those stupid parts back then, even though I wasn't really all that young back when I last saw it.
I guess I just had my brain turned off during it. I never really liked it all that much.

Hm... No, unfortunately I can't go with you on this one. :/
I get your point, it's formulaic and uses running gags too much... And...? It's nineties Disney, that's what nineties Disney does. You point out that it's different because it has its own little overused tropes, but in that respect, it really isn't different; all Disney movies from that era had their own overused crap.
Is it a great movie? Nah, not really, but I'll always love it. Partially BECAUSE of that one flaw you pointed out. I didn't really like Phil and Herc, I was rooting for Hades and paying attention to Meg's tale. The heroes really are bland, but the villains and more ambiguous characters are interesting enough to keep it afloat.
I'm not saying you're wrong, exactly, you're free to dislike the movie, of course. I'm just saying, nagging it for these reasons is a bit unfair... That, and Jim Cummings rocks.
-
07.31.2010 - 02:01 | novice snobI like how the drinking game is pretty much whenever anything happens. XD
I fall on the "like it" side, and love pieces of it, but I agree that it feels like it doesn't come together like it should. Whether it's the many gaping plotholes, the Disney formula being too obvious or whatever else I'm not sure. I disagree on the gospel stuff however, they were the best part of the movie! Although I agree that Meg's more motown-ish number is the best song. Nonetheless I agree it could have been better than what we got.
Although I do think changes to the source material is part of the problem. Not that it's been altered per se, Disney plenty of good movies white washing the stories the movies are adapted from, but the amount of twisting and bending need to make the Hercules story kid friendly makes you wonder why bother in the first place. I think that does lead to the story's plotholes, the film doesn't even follow its own internal logic.
