I've never seen the movie, I've always stayed clear of them myself. Usually going towards more historically accurate movies... like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 Turtles in Time.

But, I will take your review, consume it in a not Hannibal-esque way and continue on my merry way of knowing that I have avoided seeing Anastasia an I am better for it. Thank you Nostalgia Chick... and Poorly Russian accented Chicago guy....with the glasses...

Thank you for the great review. It's amazing, this movie is such a huge attempt to copy Disney that even today people mistake it for a Disney movie! Didn't Don Bluth leave Disney because he was dissatisfied with them and wanted to do something DIFFERENT? Geez...

Your "phone conversations" were funny, too. You basically covered all of the real history, except for one thing, Anastasia was 16 or so when she and her family were killed and not 8 like in the movie (and they were in exile by then and not living in their "splendid palaces" anymore smilies/tongue.gif).

When I was a kid, and saw this movie in theaters, I thought Rasputin's song was awesome but now, I can't look at those excerpts from it without cringing...especially his singing voice...smilies/shocked.gif

(but even though this movie is pretty doinky, I have to admit that the "Once Upon a December" scene is still kinda cool...especially when the ghosts come out of the paintings and onto the floor...)

Rasputin for president !
written by Gillus , October 06, 2008
Rasputin is one of my favorite historic character. Your are right, he was very complex. He was the lover of the Tsaritsa Alexandra, and his name mean "the fornicator" ; at least, that's what the legend say, impossible to be sure of all the facts of his life (or his dead, very interesting).

Well, go check on wiki.

Disney?
written by SimonW , October 06, 2008
I was slightly confused by this. Did you say through the review that it was LIKE a Disney film or that it IS a Disney film. If you meant the second, sorry to say this but want to set the record straight, it is a 20th Century Fox film, not a Disney film. But if you said it deliberately as a running joke, then it was funny. smilies/smiley.gif

Yes, I am sorry I forgot to add this to my request list, knew I forgot something. But I am glad you did this because it is a terrible film trying to seem like Disney.
I remember this film well and I liked Bartok the Bat, maybe that was why they made a "sequel" of this film that had him as the main character.
But we are not here to talk about that film.

What I love is that you were excited to finally get a puppy in your response of "a puppy?".
I admit that some of the songs were terrible, but others were nice. What worried me was the amount of risque in certain scenes, especially in France. But since France is widely known for that sort of thing it seems okay...IN A KID MOVIE!!!
Anyway, now that is out of the way I can say I am glad you took the time to get the historical elements right (though I felt there were too much for my taste).

Gee, wish I could do the right thing so a girl would be my..."friend". But being a guy, doubt I'll be doing the right thing anytime soon.
A great review as ever Nostalgia Chick and can't wait to see what you plan to review next. smilies/grin.gif

I remember this movie well....

Even as a kid and saw it for the first time I knew it was historically inaccurate, I didn't know just how inaccurate it was, but I still enjoyed it anyways. Anyways, awsome review, i'm so glad you where picked for this. I also loved how you threw in the historical info as well.

I would like to see you tear apart more Disney movies as well if you can. I don't have anything against them or anything, I fact I love them as much as everyone else does. But as you showed in your Pocahontas review, they are historically inaccurate (Mulan) and others just totally screw over the original story it was based on (the Little Mermaid). Heck, just make more reviews period, no matter what you cover. You're just that awsome!

Rasputn's Penis.
written by illeatyourdog , October 06, 2008
Know whats also interesting about Rasputn? His penis is apparantly on Display in a muesem somwhere. I came across this information becuase a former acquaintence from a Hegel class asked everyone "have you seen Rasputn;s penis?" And when I say everybody . . . Ron jeremy spoke at my university and when he let the audience ask questions . . . well . . . Jeremy's reply was "Ive seen Peter North's".

Poscript. He asked the professor of the aformentioned Hegel class the very same question and the Professor's reply was "No, but I have seen Napolean's".

Agree and Disagree
written by Crow-453 , October 06, 2008
While this is a great review, I do disagree with some things.

One of the main points: I really liked 'In The Dark Of The Night'. I dunno why, I just find it catchy. Maybe it's 'cause I'm a sucker for villain songs. Plus, Rasputin's voiced by Christopher Lloyd!

Another is that Rasputin WAS pretty despised in Russia. It was a strong rumour that he was bumping uglies with the Tsaritsa Alexandra. It's also not the only time that Rasputin has been portrayed as evil. Hellboy did it too, and the opinion of him is split two ways: some people think he was a saint and just got the wrong end of the stick, others think he was pure evil.

Like you said, he is a very complex historical figure, but there's really only two ways he can be portrayed. Due to the fact that the film needed a villain, they went with the "Mad Monk" portrayal of him, probably due to the fact that Rasputin did look like a villain, whereas Lenin didn't as much.

The details of Rasputin's death are also sketchy. The actual cause of death was ruled as hypothermia, meaning that he died from being thrown into the river. Plus, it IS a children's movie: they could hardly show him being poisoned, shot and clubbed as well as being drowned.

Like I said, though, I really did like this. It was funny, well-written, and executed extremely well. It was just those points that I mentioned that bothered me slightly.

Now, i know its something that everyone can learn, and its the same, as for us (europeans) learning bout ur first rights, and the whole country making... thing. But... its just u cant know comunism, if u didnt leave in any place it was. I live in poland, therefore i didnt live in times when comunism was up, i still know what it is, u can see it everyday (in a way). But, I think people have to remember that the communism Karl Marx talked about wasn't exactly implimented like his vision in Russia. There were problems and Russia had its breakup in 1991. But, of course that didn't stop there. Drunken presidents and trying to invade Georgia still doesn't paint a positive picture of Russian stability, does it?

Y'know, the more reviews you post, the more I like ya!

You're absolutely entertaining when you're ripping historically inaccurate films a new one and this one was definitely no exception. Though I have to add to the chorus of people wondering if "Rasputin" was none other than our very own ThatGuy. Part of me was waiting for some sort of big "reveal" since the phone call (and "Hide and Seek" ring tone) was such a major running gag in this video...but I'm kinda glad that it's all still hanging in the air. smilies/wink.gif

Subliminar Message
written by sesemtobom , October 06, 2008
How can it be that anyone of these 83 people above didn't notice the "subliminar" message at the 8:38 minute?
Anyway, I like pretty much your videos, nostalgia chick, even though this one wasn't the best one(i prefer your previous videos)

My god man, this means that that guy with the glasses is,(dramatic pause) Rasputin!
Makes sense though. What else but making blagvids would Rasputin be doing with his charisma and smell in this day and age? No one can smell you over the internet.

Liked the subliminal messaging (banana penis).

I can't get over your feminist remarks though. seeing as you're kinda like TGWTG's sidekick. Like Batgirl or something. I find it's all kind of contradictory, seeing as you're drifting towards fulfilling some pretty sexist cliches yourself. I'm probably wrong though. Keep up the good work and don't become another girl sidekick that's only there to prove that the protagonist is straight.

But what can I say - I'm a sucker for Don Bluth films smilies/smiley.gif

You're right, though - Bluth had a lot of MAJOR stinkers in the 90s (please do Pebble and the Penguin or A Troll in Central Park!!!!), so I could understand why he'd decide to sell-out. Still, one of my favorite songs came from this movie, "At the Beginning". Now that just screams blockbuster soundtrack, no?

but yeah, why the hell does rasputin always get the short end of sticks? they totally doted on him in Hellboy, too (not to be confused with Hellboy 2). but in that one... well no, he still had a beard... but he was damn EVIL in that one

wonder why...

I'm sorry? Being a feminist doesn't mean one need wear a nun habit. Aside from the pigtail and glasses this is the sort of thing I wear every day (aside from the Teen Witch 80's attire). Or were you referring to something else?

PENIS
written by Socialiste , October 06, 2008
Lol, I knew that someday, you would refer to Disney tendencies to include extremly short sex scenes. Subtle, but we get the message. PENIS

For people wanting to give me bad feedback, take time to watch the video, it's not just a bad childish joke I made.

As a creepy guy with a beard, however, I object to the characterization of guys with beards being creepy! By the way, did Christopher Lloyd do the voice of Rasputin? (In the movie- I suspect ThatGuyWithTheGlasses did it in the review.)

Well, at least you liked "Once Upon A December". I have surprisingly fond memories of this movie, but then again, I haven't seen it in like eight years, so... yeah, some of these clips of the movie haven't aged well.

they shouldn't give false facts about Rasputin, he was acctually a pretty cool guy... kinda loopy but altogether peaceful, especially to those people who fucked him up with shooting him, stabbing, ect.... AND SURVIVING!
he wasn't a sorcerer, he was a monk/child whisperer

ugh, what a bimbo. okay, choosing love over power (or as much power as a dispossessed princess has, which was quite a lot in 1920's Europe), all well and good and saccharine-y. well within the suspension of disbelief required by a kids' movie. but for the penniless refugee eloping with the con artist to return the gift of a truly hideous tiara encrusted with diamonds? now that's just stupid.

I've also avoided Anastasia like the black plague. I feel very sorry for the people of Russia, they have gone trough a lot of pain, and mainly because of very bad choices -actually I'm not totally against socialism, but what happened in Russia was... well, so much more complex than "communism sucks"-, then again, when people is afraid, hungry and angry, tends to make the wrong kind of choices. And that's why I've avoided watching Anastasia, it looks too much like exploitation... besides all that romanticised version of the Romanov's Russia just makes me sick.

Anyway... do you mean karma won't get me laid? Damn! That's the last time I pass on the chance of massacring little puppies...
