10.25.2009 - 09:41 | SvenHmm, do I dare watch this video? I quite like Mulan. :)
EDIT: Ok, she didn't tear it down completely, I guess I can breathe easily.
-
12.14.2009 - 20:54 | ALoneBlackRoseI agree; Mulan was quite a good movie and, by Disney standards, pretty close to what the thing was actually based on (An ancient Chinese poem called the Ballad of Hua Mu Lan) with the slight exception that she lasted ten years in the military w/o discovery, not a few months. Oh, and she died tragically, but that's beside the point.
One request, though:
PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE TEAR THE SHIT OUT OF MULAN II!!!!!! That thing was total CRAP that didn't deserve to live past the drawing board.

I don't think this is Disney's first shot at a feminist character. Esmeralda, from Hunchback of Notre Dame, was a pretty strong female character (especially if you equate feminism with sexual freedom), even if she did end up suffering from Love Interest Syndrome and need to get rescued. But I'm not surprised you didn't mention her; HoND gets exactly zero love.
This was an excellent video, and as an above commenter said, I'm really happy to see you getting back to "girly shit." Thanks for scarring your audience with the footbinding pictures, though. :0

10.25.2009 - 12:44 | TheDailyCynicI don't think that's quite true, Frollo is generally recognized as one of, if not the, most awesome and simply evil villains in Disney history. But apart from him... you'd pretty much be right. I blame it on the fucking comic-relief gargoyles, take them out of the picture and they'd have had a truly awesome movie.
-
01.31.2010 - 11:48 | valmontThere is also the problem that it has less to do with the original than pretty much any other Disney film except *maybe* Hercules.
Also, while I count Frollo as being up there in terms of BAMF Disney villains, I still give first prize to Maleficent.

Nice review, though you'll never keep me from loving Mulan. This movie kicks ass (in Finnish that is, the English dub didn't sound as decent (though it can also be a nostalgia thing for me since I was seven years old when Mulan came... Oh whatever)), but on the other hand so do you... Let's just love everybody :P

Great review, I think this is your best review so far. Although I could've done without the bound feet, especially since I have a foot fetish... Almost as bad as Trench foot :X I feel sorry for those girls.
I actually recall back in Brummie during world history in 3rd grade we learned about the story that "Inspired" Mulan and one of the students brought this movie up to our teacher, who happened to be Chinese, and she started shouting in Chinese and I was trying my damndest not to translate her to the other students, because most of what she said consisted of various swears. I have a feeling she didn't care for this flick. She got fired after swearing in Chinese again, because the administrator figured out that it was indeed cursing. That was kinda sad. I liked her.
What was I talking about again? Oh yeah. Mulan. Never actually saw the movie, I'm not too fond of 90s Disney besides Aladdin and Lion King. Actually to be fair I've never been much of a Disney person, although I respect Walt's animation, and I will give Fantasia a perfect score any day of the week.

10.25.2009 - 10:05 | AlthenaI'll admit it, I still love Mulan. Out of all of the Disney girls she's my favorite. She's smart in a way I can see, a cheater, a bit lazy, loving, outspoken, and just fails at all things social. I could relate to her better than, say, Cinderella, since I was a bit tomboish. Plus I love that her song is about herself and not about finding a man (that's the 90's trend).
And as a child I knew they got stuff wrong, and hi ever decreasing chinese army for no reason (they were never consistent with that), but lord did I loved it. I have to say I love it because of the gender roles issue and the representation of leadership styles, not so much for the culture. I still pretend the movie just took place in an alternative universe or something, and the culture issue is not as bad as Mulan 2 (shudders). Ew! Ew! Ew! It's like they took everything they got wrong and made it worst and everything they got right went down the trash.
I like the songs and how they describe the gender issues of the movie's world in a catchy way (I sang along "I'll make a man out of you") And I've always loved the cutting her hair montage, it just seems so badass to me.
One thing I can justify for Disney is Mulan running away to save her father. That happened in the story, at least in the two versions I've read, so they couldn't just change that. It's what moves the heroine. That's like Ariel not selling her soul for legs, has to happen, blame the original writer.
But yeah, I liked your review. You said everything I knew was wrong already without destroying the film. It was enjoyable and you looked like you were having fun.
But when are you going to do the little mermaid? Now THAT I would love to see. XD

In the cantonese and mandarin versions
(loophole to the voice actor issues)
you get to hear Jackie Chan sing "make a man out of you"
(he has a really nice singing voice...)
No one acknowledges the existence of Mulan 2.
But I do second a little mermaid review. :cheer:
(or Beauty and the Beast?)

As for the video review, cultural fallacies aside, I find Mulan and Pocahontas to be solid Disney movies.
