02.27.2010 - 09:47 | YingYingAvatar was terrible. Good technology, but no story, no character, just re-hashed material. I give Doug a lot of credit for having the balls to say what really needs to be said: people just like having fun, enjoying a good story. We don't need all this 3D mumbo jumbo. Just go back to writing damn stories that haven't been told 200 times.
-
02.27.2010 - 12:14 | Vinny792Yeah, But every movie stems it's roots from other stories. I didn't expect Avatar to have new and Groundbreaking story (If that's even still possible). The purpose was to watch it for the effects Technology, the realistic environments and 3D effects. Sure you can practically call Avatar a rip-off, but it all comes down to is the visual experience to watch in movie theaters, not as movie on it's own.
-
03.01.2010 - 17:53 | Jonathan MI don't believe the plot was at all ripped off.
It had a nice plot, I liked it.
Sure, it sounds ripped off if you dumb it down, but don't people dumb things down because they're too dumb to understand it? Or dumb it down to explain to a dumb person?
You don't want to be called dumb, do you?

that and the technology wasnt really Camaron's anyway. Peter Jackson hired WETA to do it (better) in Lord of the rings when he did gollum and other characters.
the reason its not used much is because its expensive. so...really the technology was there. James just actually spent the money on it because he knew the plot and character was shit. Which is a shame because James has done some good movies in the past and he coped out on what could have been better.

02.27.2010 - 14:12 | LimecatI liked Avatar and I think Michael Bay sucks cocks.
-
04.13.2010 - 22:27 | Sandman-ivanMichael Bay raped my childhood and made me distrust transformers! #2 was so crappy it felt like 2 crappy movies in one. it dint need any of that sexual references.
Avatar deserves more praise then what it gets.

I don't know man. I hated Micheal Bay's Transformers. Worst movie I saw from last year. Now I'm not a huge movie buff. I go every now and then, but it's not a huge thing for me. But anyway, I liked Avatar. And it's not that I was blown away by the special effects. It might be hard to believe, but I actually didn't think they were that impressive. Then again, I saw it in 2-D, and the very point of the effects were to look natural, but I'm getting off track. The point is, on it's merits of story and character I found Avatar above passable. Certainly not great, and not even near worthy of the highest grossing film ever, but it wasn't worthy of the hate it gets either. It was a cliche' story, yes, but it was told well enough to keep me interested. I equate it to going on a tour you've been on a bunch of times. You know the twists and turns, and you know what you're going to see, and when you're gonna see it, but this time you had a pretty cool tour guide taking you through it. Again, that doesn't make the movie good enough to be the top grosser, but it's not bad enough to be hated on the way it has. I mean, come on. Doug can't seem to go 5 videos without taking a jab at it.

03.09.2010 - 12:30 | Cobblepot27I'll have you know I have at least 3/4 of a brain, and I loved Avatar.
I also know a decent amount about film history. I also know that there are no truly original stories anymore, everything's an amalgamation.
Avatar did the exact same thing Star Wars did. Took a done-to-death, archetype and cliche filled story we ran into the ground a hundred times over, added a sci-fi spin to it, and made it new and interesting and enjoyable again.

04.24.2010 - 04:00 | Rock GolemYou can take your' story based pessimism and stow it.Avater the last airbender had one of the greatest stories ever told! With amazing animation, memorable characters, and one of the most epic endings I've ever seen, I defy you to find anything similair to this series, granted it wasn't a movie but still. If anyone hasn't seen this series I highly encourage watching the whole thing.I love that bald headed boy wonder.

Um... I didn't love that movie for its effects, sorry. They were okay, but not that great. What was great was the oddness of the idea - it was unlike anything I had ever seen at the time. Very different from Avatar, which had no new ideas at all, let alone captivating and remarkable ones.
This comment is a year too late... I wonder if anyone will ever see it... : )

-Clever
-The Cockney British Accent
-The artistic story telling
-The subtle comedy (subtle-ish...)
-The nostalgic video game humor
...nothing less then phenomenal
I can't wait to see the next video because it's a shame, a damn shame these videos don't get at least somewhat of the same recognition as you're NC vids (NC is the best but this is still pretty damn good)

I'm sure Arkada, of the D2 Brigade, wouldn't be too happy either.

I guess its a dumb question but this was actually a popular character? I'm looking up in Wikipedia and well nothing is ringing any bells. Guess I missed this one.
As for doing everything "Real" well I saw some LARP modifications where people would have their friends fight with old game controllers hooked into their belts and the people outside of the fight holding the controllers would call out the button they were pushing and the person would react with the move as best as they could manage for the Video Game character they were dressed up as. Letting the other person react. So its kinda been done just on a smaller scale.
And that it was done IRL is kinda frightening.
Fun vid but the only character with the name Duke Nukem that comes to mind for me was in Captain Planet.

I kinda only heard of DOOM and still have never played any of the games from it. I was born in 1978. But I spent most of the 1990's in Psychiatric facilities. If the TV hadn't been on at the right time I might not have even heard about little things like Waco Texas or that whole first Gulf war thing.
Just like everyone seems to think there is no way to not know of someone called Richard Scarry. All I know about the guy is what I read in Wikipedia last year and still haven't seen any of his works either. At least not that I know of.
Edit: Heck I didn't even know about Bill Clinton's Crime Bill or Assault Weapon Ban until I started watching NRAnews online. And the Lewinski thing was another of those things I missed and only found out about after trying to make sense of a Jib-Jab cartoon.
