Can it be a rip off when it is an adaption made by the exact same people that worked on the behind the scenes for the original? It would be a rip off, except that the same character archetypes, jokes, lines of dialogue, camera work, show title, etc. Is there even enough differences between the two Offices to claim it's a rip off? One of the differences is that Ricky worked behind the camera instead of in front of it for the American one, and American accents are a little different than the British one. Oh and the comedic timing is a little different, that's about it. Oh, and the American Office managed to survive longer than a few short seasons, so they fleshed out the characters more. Honestly, I've seen both, and there's no marked differences between the two besides merely superficial changes. I watched all five seasons of the Office over the course of three days, and the British one in a day, so don't you tell me I don't know what I'm talking.

Well, it sucks anyway.
I'm not from America and just sick of all your own versions. Sure, the American version is made by Ricky Gervais but you do your own freakin' versions of everything. Especially japanese horror-flicks. Just so freakin' sick of it.
My personal opinion is that the American version sucks. The characters doesn't feel real, it's to long (no one would make a real documentary about an office longer than two seasons. Six is just mental), you recognize the actors from other movies and it's not as embarresing as the brittish. Say whatever you like, but I wont rest until people watch the original.

It´s not that the american version "managed to survive", and the British one didn´t, the Office was the sitcom with most success in Brintain (if not the all time most successeful sitcom, the most successufll in a long, long time)believe me, they really, really wanted a couple more series of the the original Office.
It turns out that Gervais thougth (and I think it was a god decission) that the original Office should only me 2 seasons of 6 episodes each, it was wha the crators have previewed, and writting more just for the sake of it would be a mistake.
In the other hand, the american version it´s not a follow out of the original, ad becuase of that break it could go longer and longer, it´s a really funny show, it´s well made and it dosen´t ruin the original, but when all it´s said and done, the original continues to be the far better series, the characters have more depth and the show it´s a lot more moving, take for instance the scene when David Brent it´s about to be fired, or when Dawn goes to America...

One thing I got to wonder is why they kept the intro to just a couple of people even when the rest of the cast deserves mention as well. I mean they did in one episode but just only that one. Now recently Ed Helms got added, but I'm guessing that's due to the popularity of the character.
Regardless, this is a pretty entertaining show.

02.14.2010 - 22:58 | djsn525h1t5rI don't see what's so great about this show. It's boring, because Steve Carrell is boring and dull. What am I'm missing about this show?
He's so boring, he makes Ben Stein actually have a personality.
He's so dull, he makes Shaq an actual actor.
I haven't watched any shows other than the x-mas tree on NBC since Father of the Bride.
I rly hate Steve Carrell.
Good job on the lyrics though.

The show was originated by Ricky Gervis who has this sort of dry sense of humor. That's what makes up the Office. It's stupid, it's vulgar, it's kind of a bit on the dull side but it is marvely funny. I think I slightly like Carrell better because he has this sort of silly wit that dates back to the 40 Year Old Virgin while Gervis with his per-feck personality can be a real arse sometimes (ex: Invention of Lying; Night at the Museum)

02.14.2010 - 23:50 | djsn525h1t5rCarrel is boring in 40 Year Old Virgin.
My spine is funny compare to that.
Sorry, there was no other body parts that hasn't been used, so I went with that.

So what exactly do you find funny? Just curious.

02.15.2010 - 11:03 | djsn525h1t5rAnything other than him and the Disney film.
The funny are mostly
from Doug's top 10 comedy
some of Sandler's films
some of Eddie Murphy's film
Simpsons
Family Guy
few of Mike Myer's film
Three Stooges
The Critic
The Nostalgia Critic
Yugioh
Yugioh Abridged
some of Jim Carey's film
Stephen Colbert
The Joker (except for the Brave & The Bold, Kamen Rider Joker, and maybe the Arcana Knight Joker)
Monty Python
Futurama
Robot Chicken
(I'm going to admit this) Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet The Spartan, and Disaster Movie (mostly because of that part that they killed Hanna Montana/ Miley Cyrus)
Ninja Turtles (most of them)
South Park
Looney Tunes
Tex Avery
Most of the Fletcher's film
a few pacific anime that I'm trying to think of that there's many, mostly not dubbed yet.
Everybody Hates Chris
Transformers (except for Armada and little of Energon)
Mad TV (until close to their finale)
SNL (mostly on the TV Funhouse)
Mrs. Doubtfire
Astro Boy
Back to the Future (not the animated series)
some of Power Rangers/ Super Sentai (not that masterpiece-of-crap of a revision)
Some of Saved By The Bell
Gary & Mike
Celeberty Deathmatch
Animaniacs
Teen Titans
Animal House
most of Mel Brook's film
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Airplane
Mallrats
Sideshow Bob
And Suck-up the Vacume.
That's how far I got.

02.15.2010 - 00:24 | PhunkyPhazonI freakin' hate television these days. There are only about 2 or 3 shows I keep up with anymore. The Office is one of them. The show is pure genius, no question about it.

02.15.2010 - 07:21 | ReamerThis show is the rare example of the American version being superior to the British version. Gervais is good, but Carell is much funnier. Of course if you are the kind that needs a laugh track to tell you what's funny and you can't appreciate dry humor then of course this show will not be for you.

-
02.15.2010 - 17:52 | KriszI dont agree, British version is to me far more superior. But I think the reason why people are saying this, or what you (Reamer) said, is just because of the ways they are made. of course you can make a good american version of a british show, but the point is just that the tone is changed. you cannot make a copy of the British show in america 1) that would be boring, and completly useless (as an exact copy is just a ripoff) 2) americans dont have the same humor as Brits.
Im a huge fan of british comedy, and the UK version of The Office is just so british to me, that I can't see it can be perfected in no way. Its just about the the tone of the show, I do think that Gervais is far more superior in the role than Carell. Yes Carell is funny, but nothing like Gervais. again they are completly different, and some like the first, and some like the second. is a question of humor, to some the british humor is weird, slow and annoying, and to others its sophisticated, clever and just brilliant.
