Doug the look on your face at the end! So glad these are back, they're hilarious.

Finally back! This is a weird one.

Because many people want to hear Doug's thoughts about the show? And those who don't can watch other stuff.
  • Mauropteryx
I hope he sticks with these. I'm getting sick of the Korra vlogs. He's just getting annoying that he can't figure out what's going on in that show.

At least here he has an excuse for why he has trouble understanding the show.
  • Jeroniac  - @ ballstothewalls
Better question: Why are YOU still back to this?

I can only assume you put so much emotional investment in Doug hating this as much as you do that it drives to return in the hopes that his disappproval will somehow validate yours and give you something to brag about whenever someone mentions how much they like the show.
  • Sypoth
Because he is both a masochist and a sadist who wants to really REALLY troll people by reviewing this garbage.

You know you don't have to watch these if you don't want to, right? Just because Doug uploads them doesn't mean you HAVE to click on them. No one's forcing you. He's not postponing his NC episodes because of these. So what's the problem?
  • lupeth  - I think I can help...
    avatar
I've lurked this site for years, but only made an account recently because I think I can help out with these vlogs and the problem they present.

Doug, how about you try and review 3 episodes at once?

That's a total of 33 minutes (11 more than A:TLA, I believe), which is enough time to notice which aspects of the plot stood out to you, to notice changes in character, and to sense connections in possible overarching plots. Not to mention it'll only take 30-35 vlogs or so (depending on how far ahead of time you record these).

AT is something that inches forward in 10-minute increments, so reviewing one at a time, especially when the story may not be necessarily connected to a larger plot, seems counterproductive - especially when you haven't the feel for it yet. It would be a lot less strain and would give you more of a canvas for criticism.

That's what I'm thinking (though I'd say 2 per vlog, since that's the allotted time in a TV block.

Yes, this would be best for Doug AND for us watching, because the series takes its time building its characters and plot. MANY episodes are totally superfluous, and there isn't much to say about them.

While the series does have emotional, trippy and sometimes even deep moments, it is still very much a children's show, and thus stand alone episodes and rampant silliness abound.

Doug, please please please stick with the Adventure Time vlogs. Here's some things you should know
    1. It starts off kind of slow. You might want to review 2 or 3 episodes at a time for the first season or maybe even the second season.

    2. The series gets less random and more structured as it goes so don't worry about there being no narrative. The show is still really random, but the story gets stronger; by season 3 there is actual continuation between episodes.

It gets better with age so stick it through and I'm sure you'll even cry in some later episodes.
  • Mattieshoe
Doug, the episode was actually supposed to end with Tree Trunks just blowing up, and it actually airs that way in some instances, but the network thought it was too dark and jarring so they added a little scene of her walking through the crystal dimension.
  • ToastyMozart

The Netflix version DOES end like that.
Just *BOOM* "~Come along, with meeeee~"

I'm glad I've never seen that edited version. The boom and cut to credits is way more effective. My girlfriend's reaction to that was priceless.
  • Venic
Darn it, Mattieshoe, you edged me out literally by seconds in saying the same thing. Well done.
  • lady-kit  - good
i was worried if he saw this on his own he would break. i felt sad when i saw what happened to tree trunks the first time if were for the running in the crystal corridor it would have been beyond dark ending . really spoiler not cool but funny .
  • ToastyMozart

I saw the Netflix version, it DIDN'T have the crystal corridor!

Me too. I've been following Adventure Time since I saw the pilot on Nick. However, by the time it went over to Cartoon Network, I didn't have that channel anymore. I finally got to see the show on a flight to school. Recently, my bf got Netflix, so that's how I've been watching it I'm pretty behind but am more ahead than Doug. Honestly, this was the first episode that shocked me. Like I never cared that the show was random or weird. It's a fantasy world, so it makes sense to me. But this episode! Oh God this episode! I still can't compute! (Explodes)

  • MyWorldInABottle  - ugh he's just a troll...
    avatar
Either that or he's just really bitter... That guy "ballstothewalls" must really hate adventure time or something... just ignore him.

Anyways, Doug,... UGH! I wish I could of been there to help you out with AT... I just hope he doesn't give too much away or something... I know he probably won't but.. you know. ._.

So, keep with it Doug! I find that if you see the characters as serious characters, even through all the silliness, there's actually a lot of sadness in it. Especially the Ice King, and I mean LONG before you figure out why he's such a creep.
  • HanSK

yeah, he's just mad because he got his balls crushed against a wall

    hence the name
  • Kayleena  - THANKYOU
yay there back! the dude you're reviewing with should BE MORE careful about spoilers though, there are some things that are just fun to figure out on your own time. other than that, best AT review so far! keep em up. (and maybe because you're reviewing faster, can you PLEASE post like 2 a day? that would be awesome!) :) thanks for these btw, they make me smile.

If you haven't seen the posts about the ending to this episode, keep looking. People have explained why the ending is the way it is.
  • toongrowner
YEAH! I was afraid you allready gave up, but glad to see that youre brave enough to keep on (what btw. motivated me to finally register to this site. X3).
I know it is so far a strange and dark show, but believe, me keep on, one day you will think: "You know, besides all this crazy shit, this is actual a pretty deep, mature and creative show".
I know I say the same like most people, but thats how I feel about the show.
But to be fair, when I have seen this episode the first time, I was also very shoocked at the ending. XD

PS: Loocking forawrd the next Nostalgia Critic episode, and big Thank you for every "german" joke you ever used. I'm german, so I really enjoy it when we are somehow mentioned (in good or bad way. ;-) ) and its allways funny to hear english people speak german. XD

So the SNAIL is like Derppy Hooves or that cat from Tirgon or that God Cat from Pani Poni Dash?
  • locuas
he is mor elike Dario Brando from Jojo's bizarre adventure. by this mean is, he is a minor character, but his role in a very important episode of the series has such big effect in the ENTIRE series onwards that it changes everything.
  • Emilie Bennett
I also like Tree Trunks because she reminds me of my maternal grandmother, right down to having a similar voice.
  • M. Lion  - Possible Nash crossover
doesn't nash watch this show why don't you have a crossover with him he interveiwed one of the creators once i believe
  • An Sth  - What time is it?

It's V-log time, come on grab your fans we'll go to very distant lands with Law the guy and Doug the critic, the fun will never end it's V-log time!

I think you'll be a welcome, and helpful, addition to this vlog, Jason. Thanks for helping explain some things to Doug in person, and apparently helping to get him excited for future episodes.
  • AmericanButterfly  - Tree Trunks is so cute and funny
    avatar
I'm glad Doug liked Tree Trunks she's one of my favorite characters and she always makes me smile.

also it's nice Doug has help from someone who seen the show, to talk to it about :D

I think once Doug has a grip on the show he will be able to talk about it more.

also I loved Doug's face when the other guy said "Be more or is it like B-MO" and Doug's face is like "what the fuck are you talking about?"
  • UM536  - Right there
I have to say that I am right there with Doug for most of this. I haven't seen the show but I am watching them along with Doug and I am just as confused. The references that you all are getting while going back over the first few episodes, seeing beloved characters in old states, is really lost on us in it for the first time. Furthermore I think you are overselling it when people say "THIS IS THE DEEPEST SHOW EVER! IT TRANSCENDS REALITY, AND IS SUPER DARK AND INTERESTING AND STUFF!" It seems like a direct port of Spongebob Squarepants with gamer references so far, and winking character continuity is a nerdy thing that you have to be along for the ride on the basic premise to appreciate, not a main selling point.
  • Wowzamorphous
As a big fan of the show I wouldn't say it's the most novel thing ever but it is definitely way more than a show full of references and good continuity. It creates it's own world that is strangely sad and happy at the same time, otherwise known as nostalgia.
  • Indigowinter
I cannot wait until you get to the good stuff; especially the Ice King revel episodes like "Holly Jolly Secrets" "Remember You" and "Simon and Marcy". Adventure Time is certainly like a fine wine, better with age.

And I agree with other people, you should do vlogs with 2 or 3 episodes a piece just because they are so short and there are so many of them. At least for the first seasons.
  • Malisteen
    avatar
I'm glad Doug's still doing these, and I'm glad he's got a vet fan to help him out. Sure, there's some spoiler risk, but if it helps Doug get through the vlogs that can only be a good thing.

It's also good that this one was shorter - or did it just feel shorter? Anyway, get a bit of discussion in, get your general opinion on the record, move onto the next episode. With 11 minute episodes, which mostly don't add up to much more than random surreality for the first season (some of them add up to more later, but only retroactively), that's a better way to do things.

So... yeah, looking forward to the next episode. And Evicted later on, of course. And Henchman. There are several episodes I love in season one, I wouldn't say 'the good stuff comes later', but the reasons I love first season episodes - the spontaneity, the unpredictability, the childlike energy - aren't the same reasons I love later episodes.

Oh, and I love that Doug loves tree trunks. She's one of my favorite characters. She's so adorable, and slightly awkward and uncomfortable.

Oh, oh, and "sexy" isn't something I hear from kids shows a lot, and there was some mild controversy about its use in Adventure Time. It's always interesting what Adventure Time can sneak through the network censors vs. what they can't (ie, the original ending for this episode didn't have the bit in the crystal after TT pops).

But Doug, just the word "sexy" in a cartoon is striking to you? When Ren & Stimpy, which you watched, has stuff like this? (nsfw!): http://static.fjcdn.com/ gifs/ ren_ffb6a7_1717359.gif
  • TheOnlyThing
I didn't even notice sexy being used in Adventure because all my shock was used up from hearing it so often in Fairly Odd Parents years earlier.
  • Cinnamon Scudworth
    avatar
The "sexy" barrier was crossed in Animaniacs back in 1993. Years before that, Archie comics were using it in the 1980's. AT is hardly the first.
  • takineko

Yay you finally have an Adventure Time fan to help you make sense of the non sense! I'm so happy for you! XD
  • GayGothGuy  - Analysis things

I will say as you go through it more and more, part of what is interesting about the show is that it is not always trying to make you laugh.

I assume that these changes come when the creators get more freedom, but there are quite a few episodes that leave you feeling genuinely disturbed. Like, everything is not *supposed* to be ok. It's like what good horror is supposed to do.
  • Caassapaba  - Tree Trunks
Tree Trunks is an interesting charachter, but she is kind of irrelevant within the "main plots" as far.
  • Meeharbi
Tree trunks Applepies are actually the main focus of the story if you think about it. Without her, everything would fall apart.
