Hey, he likes it. But they still can't pronounce Iroh.

According to the commentary, when Asami gives Mako a kiss on the cheek, it's their breakup. They didn't want to do it as a big fight, but acknowledged that it was maybe too subtle.

Anyway, I liked this episode too. The exposition dump is a little clunky, but it's an interesting story.

The bit with the wolves being bloodbent at first looks a little silly, like they're doing a kickline. But then you see how they're suffering, and it's not funny any more.
  • Faytl
Can it be? A first commenter that DOESNT say "First?"
    You, sir, are my hero.
  • Mauropteryx
They're pronouncing Iroh wrong on purpose.

Kind of on topic for this. Apparently the Hanzi for Iroh is spelled "Ai-luo."
That's from the Avatar Wikia but I'm not sure what the source was before that.

I'm glad he likes it too.
  • Sadako
The source for the hanzi was from 'Tales of Ba Sing Se', where each segment was headed up by the little 'Story of So-and-so' screen.
  • JTD95
They pronounced Iroh correct. Don't remember them saying it incorrectly. They pronounced it like I-row which is the correct way to say it.

lmao robs face when doug said "what if korra gets her bending taken and then given back" was awesome
  • PsychesRose  - Priceless
Yeah, Rob's face was priceless. I almost died of laughter.

I'm really glad they talked about Iroh II's character design because that bugged me to no end.

But now that he's almost done with Korea's first season, what's Doug gonna do to fill the time between now and the next season? I know it comes out next month, but in terms of daily vlogs, that's a long time (I'm addicted to these vlogs. I need them!) And most of the time Nick puts out stuff like Korra weekly, not daily so how's he gonna fill the time there without making it feel awkward?

    I saw that, too. Hilarious!
Probably thought to himself, "Just wait til he sees Korra get it back in the same episode."

I have to say, I rather like it when voices don't match expectations in regards to characters. I like it in general where characters don't act like what people think their looks should dictate. It's more like real life that way.

Rob's face when Doug gives his prediction---> ROFL
  • The Dark Avenger
I know right what is Doug psychic. You could tell Rob was trying his hardest to keep a straight face lol. Oh boy if Doug thinks Amon and Tarlock's backstory is messed up he'd better prepare himself for one of the darkest and most depressing scenes in western children's cartoon history.

I hope Doug doesn't watch too intently while editing this, because look at Rob's face at 12:36.

Good vlog. They hit on just about everything here and I can't wait to see what side Doug falls on about the finale. I think it was great, just unfortunately rushed. With a few more minutes for extra detail it could have been even better.

You know that it is Dante Basco's birthday today? :)
And, I agree, just by the name of this episode you know this is going to be a great one! :D

  • Wyvern Blade  - Good
You talked about the episode and gave some legit insight on it. That's what I'm here to see.
  • CrystalMaster  - Next time..
Oh I can just tell from Rob's expressions during Doug's predictions and Doug's expectations that there is going to be a lot of yelling tomorrow.

His predictions were almost exactly what happens. I think he's actually going to like it.

Doug should consider being a fortune teller.
  • matt0044  - Fridge Brilliance Part 1
*Bolin says that Gommu cooks the finest street gruel he'd ever tasted, which might have been a Overly Narrow Superlative from somebody who didn't spend their childhood struggling for survival on the streets.

*Why was Amon able to resist Tarrlok's bloodbending? The same reason as the original series: Amon/Noatak was a bloodbender just like Tarrlok, only more powerful.

*Why would Korra's visions about Tarrlok being a bloodbender kick in several times when Amon attacked Korra, and why Tarrlok when Amon is a more dangerous? Of course now it makes sense Aang was not just warning about Tarrlok beeing a bloodbender, it was about Amon, also son of Yakone, too.

*Look at the spots that Amon touches when he takes someones bending. Amon uses his bloodbending to block the Sound and Light charkas.
  • matt0044  - part 2
*How was Hiroshi Sato able to create all these airplanes and blimps under the nose of the United Republic Council's eye? Well, who's to say they didn't know. Who makes the police blimps? Future Industries. So, Hiroshi could just have brought them to the Council and billed them as updated versions of the current blimps, modernised and newly refurbished. In which case, if he got a government contract, the zeppelins night have well been paid for by the United Republic Council from taxpayer's money, under the impression that they would replace the current police airships.

*It's not too hard to understand how Amon's bloodbending works. Waterbending Healing repairs and restores damaged tissues and chi paths in the body. Amon uses bloodbending to destroy the chi paths, or worse, some sort of brain damage. It explains why his victims are left so weak and depressed.

*Now we know why the Yakone flashbacks kept coming whenever Korra was beaten by either Amon or Tarrlok. Aang wanted her to understand the truth about both of them.
  • matt0044  - part 3
*It might seem strange at first that Noatak and Tarrlok are given so much character development in this episode given the next episode. If you think about it, though, their development is just as much a part of Korra's story as it is theirs — they weren't created as separate individuals, but variations on a theme. All three have unique bending abilities that they're raised to believe gives them purpose, and each attempts to define themselves as a savior figure — Korra as the Avatar, Tarrlok as a Councilman, and Noatak as Amon. All three attempt to become Republic City's savior using force, all three grow desperate and reckless when that identity is threatened, and all three are forced into drastic changes when those identities are stripped from them. Unfortunately for Tarrlok and Noatak, those changes lead only to their ultimate fate, whereas Korra is able to cope with her despair and finally understand what her Avatar identity means.

*In Tarrlok's flashback, we hear Noatok/Amon tells his father "You keeps saying that bloodbending is the most powerful thing in the world, but it's not; the Avatar is." Boy does this come back to bite him.

  • Sadako
Yeah, this is all stuff that you can read at your leisure over on TV Tropes.

    Every. Freaking. Vlog.
  • matt0044  - part 4
    From Out of the Past:

*Tarrlok tells Amon, "You fool! You've never seen bending like mine!", before trying to bloodbend him. But in fact, Amon/Noatak has specifically mastered this type of bending and being Tarrlok's brother and training partner, he knows better than anybody about Tarrlok's abilities. Just how much stronger Amon was can be seen when he overcame it with just psychic bloodbending alone.

*The name of the episode is Fridge Brilliance, and a huge hint about Amon's identity to boot. Before the finale, most people would just assume that "Out of the Past" refers to Korra's visions of her past life through Aang, and Tarrlok connection to Yakone. However, now that we know Amon and Tarrlok are brothers, the title takes on an entirely new meaning. It was referring not only to Korra's visions of Aang, but to Tarrlok and Noatak/Amon's first meeting in 20-odd years. Especially poignant when you remember that Tarrlok believed that Noatak had perished in the snowstorm back when they were children.
  • matt0044
Also a friend of mine had this to say about the Amon/Tarrlock connection:

    STOP. CUT-AND-PASTING. FROM. TV TROPES.

Nobody wants to see you cut-and-paste the entire "Fridge Brilliance" section every episode. If we wanted to read those, we'd go to TV Tropes.

*gasp* You posted original content?! WITHOUT copying and pasting the whole wall of text?

When it was revealed that Amon could take away a person's bending, I knew right away that he had to be a waterbender because a waterbender is the only bender that can reach inside a person and manipulate their chi like that. Naturally, when I saw this episode I was like "Yes! Yes! I so totally called that."
  • KouTheMad
    avatar
the reveal he was just a blood bender disappointed me, i was guessing he made a pact or something with some spirit, i think that would have been cooler.
  • BlackEscargot
I'm so glad that Rob was in this one. His expression during Doug's prediction is hilarious.

ughhhhhhhhhhhhh. Why is rob in this one? He's so annoying. He never lets doug finish talking.

Rob for once in your life just shut your fucking trap and wait till your brother is done talking.

Anyway can't wait to see what you thought about this one Nc. :D

I'm with Rob on this one. I guessed the Amon/Tarrlock relationship, but I thought it was too obvious to actually be true.
  • Dipper723
I also guessed that Amon was a bloodbender, but mostly because of the spoilerific trailer Nick had that showed him doing it to Korra.
  • anonymousmoviefan  - Rob
Oh my god, watching Rob trying not to say anything while Doug is predicting the end of the series is. Fucking. Hilarious. I hope someone takes a screencap of his face and makes some sort of motivational poster out of it! That would make my day!
  • rdfox
It is SO much fun, Rob, seeing you bite STRAIGHT THROUGH the tip of your tongue to avoid spoiling things as Doug starts giving his thoughts on what would be cool to see. XD
  • Vercalos
I could see Rob biting his tongue in the background.
  • Ecartman12  - Korra's bending being taken away
Lol, the look on Rob's face when Doug said he wanted Korra's bending to be taken away at the end was funny. :D
I really couldn't disagree with Doug more though. With a show thats going to have a second season or even if it was going to end with just one season you cannot end it like that. It would be depressing for the majority of people and how on earth would they bring her bending back for season 2??? I can't imagine them doing it very good in season 2. So I am glad they did what they did in the end of LOK.
  • Vismutti
    avatar
I would have preferred an open open ending even if it WAS just one season. It was just way too weak. Plus who knows if they would have had a chance to do a second season sooner or later anyway.

I don't know if it was Bryke's decision, though. It could have been executive meddling.

Not saying I wanted a super-depressing ending. I would have ended it on a hopeful note, sort of "we'll get through this"/"this is a beginning of a new journey" kind of thing. Lot's of movies and probably TV-shows as well end like that and it's fine. It's not like anyone died (well, out of the main characters anyway). And we know Aang knows energybending and thus it's possible for Korra to learn it too. Maybe you could even out right mention energybending in the ending as a possibility. It wouldn't be depressing, it'd be exciting. Even if we never got to see it, we'd get the feeling that the characters are strong enough to do this and then we could imagine our own continuation. And then if we do get the second season after all: all the better!
  • Malidictus
Korra's ending is depressing even as it is, but I agree - leaving her broken and bend-less would have been fucking depressing. Then again, Doug did make that Dragonbored special which was fucking depressing in its own right, so maybe he likes downer endings.

Put it this way - had Korra ended on that, I would never consider even giving the second season a try. Ending how it really does at least makes me hopeful that the next season won't be as brown and grey.
  • itstheblueguy
    avatar
Actually, one problem I did have with this season is that it didn't entirely let the characters deal with having to move beyond the loss of bending. But, like the first one, they do sort of resolve the conflict with the idea of restoring balance.
  • starfall42
A large part of the issue is they didn't know if they were getting a second book, and they didn't want to leave a cliffhanger which never got resolved. So they pretty much had to wrap everything up.

With Books 2-4, they've got more room to maneuver.
  • SRanger1071  - To Defend Iroh II
A lot of fans say his voice is a bit distracting, again because of his design. But I don't think he's as old as you think he is. Iroh II is, according to Legend of Korra mythos, Zuko's grandson, which puts him in his 20s or 30s, and the creators acknowledged that he is the youngest person to hold the rank of General in the United Forces. And here's the horrible math I've come up to explain it:

75 years have passed in between the fall of Fire Lord Ozai and Korra arriving in Republic City for the first time. The Promise and The Search are set 1 year after Ozai (74 years before Korra), and G1 didn't have any kids. So we can assume Zuko's daughter, the current Fire Lady, is about 60 years old now. And her child is probably about 30 years old. And that's why I'm not a Math major.
  • FireFlyan  - Not quite
    avatar
They didn't say that he was older, just that he LOOKED it. The design makes him look older than he is. That was their problem.
