For some reason, I can't remember this one.
Time to break out the DVD player!

I remember this episode because I just love the design of the Owl and I love the Library. Also I remember Nickelodeon advertising episode 10 and 11 as a movie. It was like Aang's Fury or something.

Doug, I can't help but be surprised at the lack of attention to detail you have with this episode. I was hoping you would say something about Fire Benders losing their bending during a solar eclipse. Especially since you were so confused about the lunar eclipse at the end of Season 1. Also, maybe you didn't notice, but this library was revealed in Season 1 as well. During the final we see a flash back of Zhao in a library. There he discovered the mortal identities of the Moon and Ocean spirits. That was the same library that Aang, Katara, Sokka, and that professor enter into in this episode. I thought that was cool and a nice continuity nod.

The other thing I'm surprised you didn't mention was the comedy. To me, Katara gets another great jab at Sokka.

Sokka: "We need some intelligence if we're going to win this war."
Katara: "Alright. We'll finish our vacations and then we'll look for Sokka's intelligence."

I always laugh at that line, haha. :)

You also didn't mention the Sand Benders taking Appa. Perhaps you're saving it in the next episode. I'm really glad you mentioned that Appa is now gone. It really makes the next episode great. It's both dramatic and funny at the same time. Remember, this desert is almost impossible to cross on foot. With all their supplies still on Appa, they are going to have a really tough time in the next episode.

I won't say you failed this vlog because you did capture some parts of the episode. But I think you should have done a lot more with this one. I don't mind long ones as long as I get to see you having fun with the series and making predictions about where everything is going. Maybe talk more about things we know you're interested in. Toph is a great example and you haven't said anything about since she appeared four episodes ago. I will just say I'm a little disappointed that you bring up these things like how you're interested in Toph and then just forget all about them when they come up again. Perhaps you really shouldn't marathon this. I liked the beginning of the second season. You really captured the the episodes and talked about a lot of great plot points. But it seems that when you marathon, you either forget a lot of what's happened or you are in too much of a rush that you don't have time to mention the important stuff. But oh well. I enjoyed you screaming Appa. :)

Overall, this episode is awesome. I love the design of the library. As you said Doug, it certainly gives the feeling that it's huge. The owl is cool as well and I like the foxes. They were cute. You're going to love the next one Doug. I'm sure of it. I hope you talk about Sokka more in the next episode. I'd be shocked if you didn't. :)

    APPA!!!!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

I love the design of the library, it's beautiful, and the owl was so cool. The tie-in with Zhao was great, and the eclipse news was like, WHOA! Plus I love what they do with Appa's theft.

    APPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

Ahh! Doug! You didn't mention the Pai Sho game! I thought you would, it was one of my most favorite moments of the show! I really like it better, when you make these reviews at least six minutes long :(

edit: Oops, wrong episode... I got them mixed up, please move along to the next comment... >__>
  • kyren0
Isn't the Pai Sho game in the next episode, and not this one? I don't recall Iroh being in this one at all
  • fiah
    avatar
Ah, damnit, I got them mixed up! I hope that wasn't too... spoilery... I think not...?
  • vickyvivivicci

The Pai Sho game is in the next episode.
  • anniap3
That happens on the next episode.
  • KenxKao
    avatar
    Yep it is . . . . AAAAAAAAAAPPAAAAAAAAAAAA! !!!

Surprised he didn't say anything about the sand benders, but oh well.
  • kyren0
I'm not sure if I agree with Sokka or not for recklessly endangering his friends for that intel. I am surprised that Aang doesn't seem to blame Sokka for what happened with Appa though
  • akphillips0510
Well Toph was the one who was outside with Appa and she's a strong bender so Aang would immediately go to blame her for not caring enough because in his anger he thinks she should've been able to save him and keep away any potential threats, but she didn't. While he could blame Sokka, he didn't know that Appa was being stolen outside and his stealing the intel would give them the opportunity to take Appa so Aang doesn't jump down his throat. So he jumps down the throat of the one who's "most at fault" in his mind.
  • vickyvivivicci  - On length
    avatar
Yeah, uh, actually talking about the whole "Toph is stuck outside with Appa, and has to keep the whole library from sinking, while Sandbenders try to steal away Appa" part of the episode would have added to the review length. Or, like, even talking about the fact that Appa got abducted beyond just yelling about Appa. XD I dunno'. Last episode you missed like 33% of the episode by not talking about Sokka's part in it, and that would have added more to the vlog length. If you don't WANT it to be longer, that's fair. But if you'e just... Looking for something more to say, covering the other parts of the episodes could help. :D

Also kind of surprised you didn't comment on the whole solar eclipse aspect, since this is coming back up from the Siege of the North.
  • KenxKao
    avatar
He did mention it, just in passing though. It was very quick
  • kyren0
Yeah, it seemed like Doug was more interested in talking about the abstract of the episode, rather than the characters and their actions. the only character he really talked about was the owl. Which is odd. we know Doug is a character guy
  • Vioven
    avatar
Was this not the best episode ever? I just found the whole concept of the library and general feel of the episode to be great.

I loved Sokka in this one. Just another example of why he's such a great character. He's always trying to plan ahead. Oh, and Appa being gone will be a very big point in the next episode and on.

If you want to add more content to your videos, you can talk more about Toph. I'm really curious what you think of her now, and she has had some good moments in the past two episodes (cracking nuts with Aang's staff, the blind joke, Toph holding the Library up while the Sandbenders steal Appa, etc).
  • Lipkin
I second the motion to talk more about Toph.
  • Unholy Shadow

Oh my god your intro to this.
I thought this was a really enjoyable episode, especially with the spirit. He had a very good voice match, I agree.
He definitely the imposing yet almost generous feel? It added a lot!
Toph had some brilliant moments in this episode.

You should really pick up the artbook if you get the chance! I think you'd really enjoy looking through it, I know I did!
  • jonaslum
Wasn't this a two-parter? I'm pretty sure this & The Desert aired on the same day...
  • Dipper723
They did air on the same day, but they weren't two parters. Nick aired them together to increase ratings. They did that again with episodes 12 & 13, and 19 & 20, of Book 2

DiMartino and Konietzko have never been shy about admitting that Miyazaki has always been a strong influence on them, especially when it comes to the designs of anything regarding the Spirit World.
  • anniap3
And wait to see what's coming. The combination between this episode and the next one is really big.

I'm surprised you didn't talked about Toph trying to save Appa and her friends at the same time, I'm watching the episodes again with you and this was one of the points I was imagining your opinion because you normally describe this type of things. But it's ok,I guess there was a lot of information at the same time that it was hard to talk about all of them. Can't wait 'till you watch the next one.
  • vickyvivivicci
    avatar
There clearly wasn't that much information if he barely got the video length over 4 minutes. XD Toph really should have had more attention paid to her. This was a fairly straightforward episode, so the humor he seems to like so much in this series seems like it'd have been easy to comment on, let alone the characters.

  • akphillips0510  - Missed some stuff again
Surprised he didn't talk about Toph again. He wanted more character development from her and when it happens, in this and the past two episodes she's in(especially The Chase), he fails to mention any of it! Her talk with Appa outside was very nice and her desperation while trying to save him was really impactful I thought.
Also no mention of sandbending at all? A completely new, specialized earthbending form, much like the people who lived in the swamp and bent the water in the vines and whatnot. It's very interesting that benders have different styles based on where they live that they develop to survive. You can tell it's different and not something you learn immediately because Toph didn't pick up on it right away. She can't see very well and that's part of the reason Appa got taken in the first place!
    Thanks for the vlog anyway!

the Lion-Turtles come into play in the series finally... should I have said spoilers?
  • Semudara
    avatar
No, that's not giving away much. Personally, I think there should have been a LOT more foreshadowing of the Lion Turtle's role, instead of just a two-second cameo in this episode.

    Also, it's "finale", not "finally".
  • Vendetta92
Like someone else already said, if you don't want these videos to be longer that's fair enough, but you're leaving out quite a lot that you could talk about in your review.
Last episode it was mainly the Sokka subplot. This time you have the callback to Zhao and you have the day of black sun idea which is obviously huge to the story. Another obvious thing to talk about if you feel short on topics is the comedy, which is very rarely adressed.
  • Leon Real
Evil triumphs when good people good nothing. In that sense, this owl spirit in one of the most evil characters in this world. With his aid, the war could've ended decades ago. And don't give me this, he's disappointed with humanity because they've been at war for the last century. He should've known better.

This brings up another point, knowledge does not equal intelligence. The owl spirit is incredibly stupid. He should've known that giving Aang the information they need would stop this war he despises so much. It's paradoxical, but it's true.
But no, instead he decides to bury his library forever. That's like having fifty million Dollars, and instead of investing or using them to buy all sort of cool stuff, you put it all in a room and lock it up. If you do that, you're not rich, you're an idiot with a giant pile of green paper strips. And that's what the stupid owl has now, a building used of useless paper.
  • thorondragon
that would be a good point if he was human..... which he is not.

the spirits are, and always have been, a neutral force in avatar. from ko the face stealer, incredibly wise and full of ancient knowledge he is willing to share yet for the price of risking your face, to the panda, a gentle creature who went on a rampage, and to wan shing tong, who sought to spread his knowledge to the world for betterment yet mortals always, always used it to destroy.
the spirits care little of this war. by all means, it is far from the first war wan shing tong ever observed. he has seen both sides commit horrible atrocities, have sen both sides come to his library and take his knowledge to destroy theri enemies, seen both sides either win or lose, only for another war ot occur, and another human to come into his library seeking a new way for destruction.

wan shing tong is not part of this war, yet finds that he has suffered from it despite his neutrality. he decided to test the avatar and his gang to see if perhaps these humans would be different, but like all the rest they sought to destroy their enemies. thus he took his library back to the spirit realm, and tried to make sure that his knowledge would not return to the human world to cause even more destruction.

he is not evil in the slightest. he is a spirit or knowledge, he came to this world to help better humanity, and they only used it to destroy. to him, one side ws no better than the other.
  • Leon Real
You have a point. But if Wan Shing Tong had the intention of aiding humanity, he should've been more proactive about it, rather than just HOPING they'd use the knowledge for peaceful purposes, that's just naïve.

Armed conflict will always exist. Sun Tzu, a pacifist, knew this and wrote "The Art of War" so that wars would end quickly. Wan Shing Tong, if he is as wise as he boasts, should've known this principle as well.

It's true that in wars, there's not always a clear "right" or "good" side to the conflict, in this particular case, there is. And it's not even about taking sides in particular. Wan Shing Tong should know that wars are an obstacle in humanity's progress and that it's best to make them as short as possible and who should win.

Awwwwman I want these to be longer! You had so much to say about the others and I feel there's a lot to say about every episode and I just want these to be like 15 minutes long each! I wouldn't mind that :D I finished rewatching the entire series because of these vlogs and I really want to hear you talk at length about them!
  • Ppleater
    avatar
I have to agree with the others Doug, there's a lot that you leave out, and then you say there isn't enough to talk about. You've barely talked about Toph since she first appeared, after saying you wanted to get to know her better. I love hearing you talk about this series, but right now you're focusing a lot of the bare essentials, while some of the best parts are being skimmed over or forgotten.
  • thorondragon
probably having a problem articulating it. and admitably some of the poitns shown of this episode would be poitns he had already covered before, being the humor and character traits.

can't blame a guy for being rather uncertain on the elements of the series, especvially when he is doing one per day. he is probably also busy with the next nostalgia critic episode by now too.
  • TheWilliamsNow  - Toph
He hasn't talked much about Toph in the past blogs.
  • Bravemoosashi
Wow I expected Doug to at least talk about the solar eclipse they found out about in this episode after him talking so much about how the moon and sun effecting bending in the first season finale confused him. I mean the solar eclipse is kind of really important in this episode.

But oh well. Glad he liked it.
  • hahadumbass  - The Library
I would have liked it if they would have shown how the Library came to being, who built it, etc. Like maybe have it be like hundreds of years ago, one of the previous avatars built it and was then taken over by the giant owl after that avatar had died or something like that. Also I hope Doug knows that Mark Hamill is the voice of the Fire Lord.
  • Sakuradrops
    avatar
Some how I'd knew he would really like the design of the Owl spirit since it is a really neat design! Can's wait to watch more.
  • Chirp421
    avatar
Wow, there was just so much about this episode you didn't even touch on. Like the fact that the owl mentions having been visited by the General from season one. Thats how he found out about the moon spirit and the lunar eclipse.

Or the sandbenders and the entire kidnapping of Appa.

I feel like you kind of failed this vlog. Still fun to watch, but you didn't talk about a lot of stuff so it just felt rushed and lacking.
  • Conan_Edogawa  - We've heard of this library before.
    avatar
I wouldn't be surprised if you completely forgot, since it was several episodes ago, but if you recall Admiral Zhao (General Malfoy), he mentioned at the North Pole that he had found out about the Moon and Ocean spirits' mortal forms in a library hidden underground.

And the Owl spirit mentions a previous visitor, leaving implications of Zhao.
  • Rider Dragon
    avatar
It's not even implications. They even show you that Zhao was there twice.
  • Conan_Edogawa
    avatar
oh? sorry, it's been a while since I saw the episode. I know it shows him in the library back when he first mentioned finding it, but I forgot it showed him in this episode, too.
