    Next episode is better

Regarding Toph's parents, I wouldn't say it's a misunderstanding at all. They're actually acting kinda villainous. They know she ran away, they know it was for good reason, and they know it wasn't a kidnapping, but they want to force their daughter to come back.
  • Lightice
Yeah, they are actively trying to force Toph into the "helpless, blind little girl"-role. And unfortunately, it's not hard to find people like that in the real world, who can't deal even with smallest disabilities and insist that people who possess them must be in constant care because they are oh so helpless and vulnerable to the evil world.

And ofcourse the two that the parents hire to find Toph aren't your nice social services types, but pretty ruthless mercenaries who have already shown willingness to collude with the Fire Nation.
  • Zorro4k6
    avatar
Agreed. They aren't really evil per se, but continue to see Toph as a helpless little blind girl. That bugs me btw. I mean they clearly saw she can take care of herself and yet refuse to accept it. They even go so far as to increase security around her so she's cared for at all times. That's the reason she ran away. Of course she was probably going to leave anyway. But it still bothers me. Also if the parents know she ran away, why did the dad tell the two mercenaries that Aang kidnapped her? What's the point of it? Why not just say that Toph ran away and I want you to bring her back? I guess he still sees her as a helpless girl.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite episodes. I love how Earth Bending is used now. Rather than it being used for combat or tasks, it's a sense. She feels the vibrations in the earth, so she knows exactly where everything is around her. I like to think of it as her Spider Sense, haha. She also has a strong sense of hearing as demonstrated in this episode when one of the bad guys came swinging at her. At first you don't hear anything, but she does. Her ear moves very slightly. I like that and it's pretty much true. When one sense goes, the others get stronger. So I loved this episode. I love the humor of Sokka and Katara. I love how Katara uses her water bending to rough up those two guys. This episode is just great.

Also, great vlog, Doug. You captured the whole episode. Toph is a great character and really gets better as the series goes on in my opinion.

You will love the next episode Doug. I can't wait until tomorrow to see your vlog. :)

I don't know, I think Tophs parents just see her as their helpless little blind baby and cant really process the notion that she IS really capable, even seeing it for themselves. I don't thin they're villanous, as such, but it may take a while for the idea to really sink in, if ir ever does.
  • simsgirlgem
    avatar
agreed I think they refuse to accept their daughter can care for herself and is not a fragile china doll like they thought because she's blind in fact I wonder if they marry her off to insure she be cared for for when they pass on or if they expect the servants to care for her after they die
  • DarronRanston
I think Doug has demonstrated many times through this thing that he doesn't understand such situations. I mean remember how he kept calling Sokka's Relationship with a princess being forced to marry a douche-canoe she didn't love a "love triangle".
  • Reaper00140
You do realize that an arranged marriage being opposed by true love is a common love triangle scenario right? Besides, both suitors clearly desire Yue but for different reasons. The douche is only interested in the perks where as Sokka actually cares for her. Sounds like a typical love triangle story to me.
  • pinky75910
    avatar
Is not really a love triangle when only two people in the 'triangle' have any feelings for each other. A 'triangle' is when at least one person is torn between their own feelings for two people.
  • Reaper00140
While you are correct to an extent, there are multiple kinds of love triangles that exist. For example, A married man with a jealous friend in love with his wife is another common love triangle. No one is torn between their feelings in that scenario, just one man jealous of his friend.

The way I view the yue situation is one of those Rivalry kind of deals where two men compete for the affection of the woman.

Although, if you want to get technical, Sokka already does have Yue's heart. He's just competing for the right to marry her while the douche just keeps picking on him.
  • ohe
    avatar
Calling it a love triangle makes all narrative sense. The only thing Doug's choice of words hints towards is that he might not be confusing cartoon television with reality, as he's treating the subject as a narrative and not a space for these personalities to express themselves as if they were real.
  • pinky75910

They think the Avatar has brainwashed and corrupted their innocent little angel and swapped her for some monster who hates them, so they want to keep her closer to make sure she doesn't get that influence again.

WHen you sacrifice freedom for safety, you lose both.

I think Toph's parents are simply idiots. Toph herself on the other hand is my favourite character, so I like this episode because she joins them in it :) . Prepare for some really good blind jokes and other good jokes in the future with her or from her :) .
  • Elphaba645
    avatar
Yeah Sokka in this episode is HILARIOUS!!!!! And they do give Toph a pretty cool character, but I don't like her as much or think she has as much of a character as any of the others. And The Boulder is great, of course.

    WATER TRIBE!!!

    Good episode as always!

Also, Toph is voiced by your favorite crazy stalker girl from the Fortune Teller Episode! The creators liked her so much, they decided to bring her back on as a regular.

I started watching the episodes each day before I see the review, and so far I'm loving it. I hope he really likes the next episode!
  • kyren0
Same here, except I do have some trouble keeping pace with him. It's hard to stop at just 1 episode, and that's when he doesn't skip a day.
  • dancallahan1121
what about the fight sences i loved the bending in this episode why didnt you talk about it?
  • Reaper00140
there's not really that much to talk about. "The fight scenes were cool." There, done.
  • Vioven
    avatar
Well there is the fact that she uses a different style because she's blind and learned how to earthbend differently but yeah, pretty much.
  • TheWelshPirate
    avatar
I don't think Doug is such a hardcore martial arts fan that he could immediately pick up on different styles based on visuals alone. Let's face it, for the majority of people it's all just a bunch of fancy kicks and punches.
  • Sadako
Also, the majority of the benders we saw in this episode were bending the same way pro wrestlers are martial artists, lol. You can't really see the differences between Toph's style and regular Earthbending until the two forms are standing next to each other, without any luchadore masks in the vicinity.

Also, I don't think she explained how she learned her unique style in this episode, so there's no reason Doug would notice that.
  • TheWelshPirate
    avatar
Now that I think of it, I don't think we ever see Toph fighting against, or even side-by-side with a traditional Hung-Gar style Earthbender.
  • Lightice
We do, actually. There are many fight scenes where Toph is alongside or even few times against other earthbenders.
  • TheWelshPirate  - Possible Spoilers
    avatar
I might be wrong, but I got the impression that the Dai Li don't use traditional Hung-Gar style, either. Neither do the Sandbenders. I can't think of any other notable Earthbenders she fights with or against that you could draw a comparison between their styles.
  • cannedfury
I can't tell apart Chinese martial arts, but I did think this is the episode where the show's fight scenes significantly improved. Earth bending in general was always my favorite just because it best translated the characters' motions to the effects they caused. Now it's executed with so much more convincing weight and impact. Aside from becoming experienced, I think the creators realized, "As long as it's bending, we can violently smash everybody as hard as we want!" and started cutting loose.

I have to admit, I cringed at a lot of the show's comedy and fights up until this point. So many of the bigger battles and climactic scenes like Aang's Monoke fish mode lacked a sense of scale and force, with some seriously choppy motion. Aside from adding a cynical balance to the humor, just the way they do fight scenes and effects made me think, "Now the show actually looks like a million dollars."

Toph is a fan favorite. Speaking of fan favorites, can't wait for the next one.

Toph is the greatest character on the show.

This is my favorite episode from all 3 seasons.

damn if he likes this season so much imagine how much hell love season 3 also I wonder what hell think of the puppet master after all it is the darkest episode in the entire series
  • Mousy Voice
    avatar
Toph's voice actress is named Jessie Flower whom you may recall is the same voice actress who played Meng, the girl with the crush on Aang in the episode the Fortune Teller. See, I told you she'd be coming back. The directors loved her so much as Meng that they chose her to play Toph.

I really like this episode because they made Toph so appealing in just one episode. By the end of it, I was really excited to see what Toph would bring to the table in both her personality and her bending abilities. It was also really cool that she actually has her own unique bending style. While earthbending is based off of hung gar style kung fu, Toph's martial arts is based off of southern praying mantis, which ironically is said (according to legend) to have been created by a blind woman.

Having a blind master is actually a common trope in Chinese martial arts films, and Toph is just a creative new spin on that idea. Having all these muscle bound guys getting beaten up by a little blind girl was absolutely hilarious.
  • Flowteau  - That's not ironic.
    That's not ironic. That's coincidental.
  • Sadako
Maybe not even a coincidence, given the attention to detail they give in this series.

But yeah, definitely not irony. lol
  • TheWelshPirate
    avatar
I think they mention in the commentary of this episode that they learned about the legend of the origin of the Southern Mantis style well after Toph was an established member of the group.

So yeah, it's an awesomely perfect coincidence.
  • pinky75910
    avatar
According to the Master who created Toph's fighting moves for the animators, he was told it would be for a blind girl, and he choose a move set that would work best for a small blind person, an art that depends on contact and literally feeling what the person will do and reacting faster than they can act.
  • TheWelshPirate

  • Dipper723
Wow Doug, you're REALLY getting into this show. Before we had to wait until midnight to see your vlogs, now we're getting them in the afternoon-early evening.

i loved this episode because Toph is my favorite character

the next episode is going to be so good cause it's a zuko centered one where we see his past and someone very important to him. that episode to me is one of the best of the season
  • drewder
    BOO!! no talking
    Hey don't boo aang!

seriously though I'm not sure there was a misunderstanding. the trio understood that she was running away as evidenced by sakkas line about "let's go before your father changes his mind again" Also most people would call someone who takes their child away without permission a kidnapper regardless of whether they wanted to go
  • bratinov
The Boulder is a parody of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and is voiced by Mick Foley, another wrestler.

Toph has a awesome voice actor, just love that voice.
  • Sadako
Mick Foley was The Rock's tag-team partner, too.
  • ohe
    avatar
Out of respect towards Dwayne Johnson, let's just say it's a parody of The Rock.
  • Ohtsam
Everything from this episode to the end of the season really cemented this show as one of the best animated shows of all time in my mind at least.
  • KainGerc
Katara: "This is just going to be a bunch of guys throwing rocks at each other, isn't it?"
Sokka: "That's what I paid for."
  • Tedward28

Toph is the best character in the series! Really wish he had commented on the fight scenes in this episode. I think the introduction of Toph just vastly improved the choreography in the series all round, as she has the coolest style of fighting in the show. Not to say it wasnt good before, it was great. Toph just brought earthbending to the forefront with the other styles and characterised what it was to be and earthbender. As Aang does with Air, Katara for Water and Zuko with Fire.

In D&D terms, Toph has trained in the Tremorsense feat. And, Doug, you have my condolences, because saying that Toph isn't as good as Sokka might get you lynched by some of the Toph fans. (RUN FOR YOUR SECRET BUNKER NOW).
  • starfall42
Don't pile on Doug for not taking to Toph right away. It takes a few episodes for her to start fitting in.

Tons of stuff going on in this episode. As mentioned, actual wrestler Mick Foley was The Boulder. They did get the wrestling tropes down well. I liked the evil foreign bender, Fire Nation Man. I also liked the little detail of using a badger-mole like a Zamboni to clear the ring.

The fight scenes are really amazing in this episodes, with lots of camera motion, different angles, and slow-mo. The fights are really well choreographed.

The music playing while they have dinner is a real traditional Chinese tune.

With only a couple goofs, no, they never do forget that Toph is blind. Her limitations are often used for humor (like getting bonked on the head by her bending belt), but for drama too. Aang defeated her so easily because she couldn't "see" him while he was floating. I also really liked the animated effect showing her "seismic sense".

The bending academy Aang tries first (free first lesson with coupon!) is a dig at strip-mall karate studios, where your belt progression has more to do with how much you pay rather than your skill.

It's very brief, but I love the last shot of Toph as they fly away into the night. The look of contentment as she goes to sleep, along with the "Safe Return" music cue is beautiful.

Doug, The Boulder is supposed to be a parody of The Rock. He made me chuckle. I do like Toph and her sassy banter during the match and even at the dinner table with Aang. Her earth bending skills are fantastic to watch.
  • Lightice
Toph doesn't experience as much character development as the rest of the cast, since she's pretty well-rounded from the start. Her only inner conflict is with the discrepancy of her wishes and the wishes of her parents, and she brings herself to solve it in this episode. But that's not to say that she's one note character, either. She does quickly come off as a real person, not just blind powerhouse archetype.
  • mcox4
It took a few episodes but, over the course of the 2nd season, Toph became one of my favorite characters in the whole series. Possibly one of my favorite characters in anything ever.

And The Boulder is awesome! He only gets funnier. His voice actor does a great Dwayne Johnson parody.
  • TheWelshPirate
    avatar
He probably does such a good Dwayne Johnson parody because he probably personally knows Dwayne Johnson. The Boulder is voiced by Mick Foley aka "Mankind".
  • Sadako
lol The Boulder is voiced by Mick Foley (Mankind), who was The Rock's tag-team partner, who would imitate The Rock as part of their stage personae's good-natured ribbing.

They apparently tried to get Dwayne Johnson for The Boulder, but they couldn't swing it. Having a parody voiced by a parody is even better, IMO.
  • Mac.o.o  - Toph will grow on you
I didn't love Toph from the beginning either, but i love her now. Which reminds me (little spoilers): /watch?v=D7E-D1KvXxE

And the guys chasing her actually amount to a great thing at the end of the season.
  • 1wolffan
    avatar
And let Toph's blind jokes commence. She zings herself pretty good a few times. Keep an eye out for that. :)
  • Dacilriel
Toph will get much more development. Starting very quickly.

It wasn't a misunderstanding. Toph ran away and used the "Dad said it was okay" thing as an excuse in case the Gaang wasn't sure about her coming. It's less clear about her parents' take on it, but I think they were also using an excuse when they talked about kidnapping.

Toph was originally supposed to be a boy, and the earthbender in the opening credits was the intended design. When they realized the character was better as a girl they used the design for The Boulder instead.
  • Flowteau  - No, it wasn't for The Boulder
Actually, the redesign was used for Avatar Roku's Earthbending teacher, Sud... who looks exactly the same.
  • TheWelshPirate
    avatar
I think the "misunderstanding" that Doug was referring to was how Toph's father assumed Aang kidnapped her. Of course, I think that deep down he knows very well that she ran away, but I also don't think he cares. This episode established pretty well that he's far too committed to his perceptions of his daughter to actually get to know his daughter.
  • Unholy Shadow
    avatar
I really liked how they handled Toph myself. Seeing through Earthbending and specifically how she did it was really cool. She gets some really great moments.

And yes! The "Water Tribe" thing killed me too when I first saw it! As for Toph being hunted down it's like you said, you'll have to wait and see.
  • Vioven
    avatar
Can't wait till you get to The Chase.

And don't worry about Toph, she's not very easy to like until a few episodes later. Just like Sokka, she'll grow on you. She's a great character.

You did realize the Boulder is supposed to be the Rock, right? e-e
  • Sockpuppet
    avatar
I agree about her taking some getting used to, but thats one more thing I like about her as a character. I can understand why the pampered blind girl might be pretty arrogant seeming when she can do things really no one else can do, and kick so much ass despite appearances.
  • bratinov
Doug, I don't think you should hate on Toph based on a presumption, pretty much all of the fans love her, including me.

Its just one episode and I don't see anything wrong with whats shown here. She's definitely not a "one trick" character.

What is this misunderstanding you speak of, its clear everyone cough on that she escaped. I can't see anyone thinking that Aang's group would take anyone against their will.
  • mariage_sorciere
    avatar
When did he say anything bad about her? He just stated that he hopes there will be more to her character, like the rest of the main cast. Doug knows this is an introduction episode, he's just stating his hopes for Toph's character. He said nothing malicious about Toph at all.

If later on Doug doesn't like Toph that much, that's his opinion. He's not going to change it if we all tell him how much we love her. I mean, a lot of us told him how bad The Great Divide and Avatar Day were, and he really enjoyed them. Let's not assume he's going to like the same things we like.
  • pinky75910
    avatar
"Alas, due to her blindness, she will never be a great Earthbender..."

I love the trash talk. "Win by a landslide" "The hurt in the dirt!"

    Wait until "Bitter Work".

But for now, you are going to love the next ep. Many of the questions you've been asking will finally be answered. You want dark? Ya got dark.
  • bratinov
    @mariage_sorciere

Sorry, I just get defensive when it comes to my favorite characters, not saying anyone should conform to whats popular either, just giving a heads up.

Yeah, that bit about The Great Divide and Avatar day, I just don't get it, but he IS a comedian so maybe he has a affinity to funnier episodes...
