Let me be the First to say that I liked this movie when it came out. I suppose kids are stupid like that.

Don't worry dude. Your not the only one.

Don't worry everyone has a movie they liked as a kid but when they grew up they realized how crappy it truly is. It's just another part of growing up I guess.

Agree. I have looked back at a few movies and cartoons that I was just into as a little girl and half of the of the time re-watching them it made me wonder: what did I see in them?

You aren't alone, this was one of those movies I liked as a kid too, or at east I REMEMBER liking it as a kid, the only scene I really recall enjoying were that shrimps sob story when it was pleading for it's life because it was so over the top, the fact that the sharks were the mafia because...what?! and the songs.

I watched it a few days ago because Doug had started Dreamworks-uary and I wanted to see if it was how I remembered it being before this review came out. Well...

Good God I did not remember Will Smith Fish being this creepy, I don't think it helps that he's always in a permanent close-up. And I didn't even laugh once.

That said, it's no big deal, everybody liked dumb stuff as a kid, and we at least had a tonne of decent stuff to distract us from it.

What I can't understand is how someone decided to use THIS movie as inspiration for a rip-off called "The Reef" which is somehow worse.
  • Raptor Rex
Maybe, I guess...but Kids deserve better than this.

I agree with you Doug! I didn't like this movie, even as a kid. I actually remember falling asleep the first time I saw this. It's basically the same problem I have with Cars: boring, and just marketed to little kids.

I agree 100% Doug. I never liked this film. I never saw it when it came out because honestly, I was almost 16 and the trailer didn't interest me. I did see it years later though and I didn't like it for the same reasons you do Doug. It just isn't that good. I also thought of this as a Finding Nemo rip off.

I never saw this. I was already paying taxes when this came out lol.

But to bring up the elephant in the room...this movie is marketed for one purpose. To kids, about being gay. Disclaimer** I have nothing against gay people, and frankly whatever people want to do in their bedroom isn't my business. So ya, its basically as story about a gay dude, coming to terms with being gay. Will Smith fish is just a marketing tool to reeling young urban demographic which Dreamworks doesn't exactly appeal too. Basically the will smith story is a pewter cover for the real agenda. Just pointing it out. I am not making ANY moral judgment. I just don't want the PC patrol to start piling on me and calling me a bigot for merely mentioning it.

Frankly I'm surprised Doug didn't mention that. But I guess that isn't his style to mention anything "controversial." I'm not a conspiracy nut but I do tend to notice this stuff when I watch these movies with my kids. It makes me wonder what kinds of subliminal signals they pick up on that just bounce off my cobb-webby brain lol.
  • The Battousai  - Uh, what?
    avatar
You never saw the movie, but you then claim that the main character is supposed to be "a gay dude coming to terms with being gay?" A quick look at the plot shows that he's not only interested in the "Angie" fish, but that they end up getting together in the end (after he saves her from the mafia fish and revealing his secret, apparently), not to mention that the love triangle in the story involves the Renee fish. The only character that could even come close to being the focus of this idea of yours is the Jack Black character, the vegetarian shark. If that's the case, then it's simply a parallel being drawn whether or not it was intended by the filmmakers (I'm guessing not - they didn't exactly think much of the movie through). If people find that touching, then good for them - they got something positive out of a terrible movie, which isn't always easy.

Don't know why you would think that's "controversial," though.

I *think* he's referring to Jack Black Shark being a vegetarian and running away to be a fabulo- I mean, upstanding dolphin.
  • BoxxHarry
The character designs in this movie are truly awful. I have to agree with Doug about the Will Smith fish, he just looks creepy as hell. This movie feels like a commercial with all the product placement, in-jokes and celebrities, even as a kid I noticed this

This movie is a failure in pretty much every way imaginable, from the contrived story line to the pathetic humor to the awful animation and wasted talent. However, I have seen this putrid pile of pusilanimously conceived pig pus several times and have enjoyed it thoroughly! It's like the movie A Night At The Roxbury for me, because I know that movie is awful and I have seen it 100 times. Literally, like 100 times. I can't explain the appeal. Maybe I'm just a fucking idiot.

I don't hate this movie, but I'm far from loving it! XD Yes, this movie is bad...like really bad, but there are worse kid's films and this one seems kinda harmless. Mostly, I just like it for the actors, in all honesty. I like Will Smith; I love Jack Black; I even like the Scorsese fish. And man, did I feel sorry for Renee Zellweiger fish. Will Smith fish treated her like shit. She probably would have made a better, more relatable main character. And unfortunately, I got the songs from this movie stuck in my head after I first saw it. XP
  • Floweramon
I'm pretty much the same way. I don't love the film, but I don't see why this is any worse than the average pop-culture referencing, celebrity toting kids film. And the character designs, while nothing special and pretty silly, aren't that hideous to me. Eh, minority opinion I suppose, I don't care enough about the film to defend it too much.
  • moonfall
Why does disguising himself as a dolphin make the shark acceptable in fish society? Dolphins eat fish, too. Not only that, they play with their food. Sharks will eat the fish; dolphins torture them and then eat them. Wouldn't a dolphin be even worse in that sense?
  • Falconfly
    avatar
But dolphins are somehow cuter than sharks.

Which bothers me. People seriously think an ugly fetus-like mammal with a tumour on it's head looks cuter than a shark?
  • Moomoof
    avatar
hey don't diss dolphins...sharks are awesome and dolphins are too
Also dolphins can kill sharks...so yea..i don't know know why ....either
  • hunyuu
Probably because humans fear sharks as creatures that can actually attack us while dolphins are cute harmless animals to us.
Society accepts it even though it's an incorrect notion to think that dolphins would get along better with fish. Heck you have the fish cleaning whales. If I was a fish I would definitely NOT do that job especially if it means I have to go into its mouth.
  • PlayMp1

    The catch?

Dolphins are far bigger assholes than sharks. Sharks are obviously carnivorous and will fuck you up, but they are at least honorable. They will kill the shit out of you, eat you, and be done for the day.

Dolphins, on the other hand, are complete dickwads. Not only will they cheerfully murder your ass, but they'll take their time doing it, playing with your mortally wounded body for plenty of time before finally deciding to kill you. Oh, and they will gladly punch sharks in the face with their snouts.

    Dolphins suck.
  • redjirachi
Bottlenose dolphins are diabolical, to be precise. They not only kill and torture, but they like killing other porpoises and sometimes try and rape them(and yes, they try to rape people too)
  • Jaxxy
I honestly liked this movie, mainly because at the time I was growing up around similar people in the movie. It takes place in an underwater version of NYC, and back then I went to Queens every other weekend to stay with my dad. I liked it cause it was familiar, and I thought it was hilarious too.

I thought the music was pretty rad as well.
  • Ruby Doomsday

Um... dolphins aren't vegetarians either. How is that shark's plan supposed to work? Sorry, I've never seen the movie and maybe I'm missing something, but... I don't get it.
  • EternityEyes
    avatar
Because dolphins are the CUTE fish with good PR, that's why! But seriously, screw dolphins.

And the animation really took a downturn in this. I honestly thought that it came out BEFORE Shrek 2. Geez, Dreamworks, you could put SOME effort in your attempt to get Grandma confused over which fish movie her grandkid wanted for Christmas.

Also, whenever someone mentions Shark Tale, all I can think of this, which explains how and why it got made in the first place (besides, "Finding Nemo made a shitton of money! We can do that, right?!"):

    *Mammals.

And I think that's one of the reasons why dolphins are portrayed as friends of fish despite the fact that they also eat fish. Because, of course, sharks = pure evil.
  • ladydiskette

Ecco The Dolphin got it right when they had the hero eat fish to replenish his life.

I kinda wish they made a movie out of the game now...well, a good well-written movie, and based off the track record of video-game based movies that have come out I'm not holding my breath.
  • EternityEyes
    avatar
The thing with Ecco The Dolphin is that as good as it is, it's very bizarre (it involves a telepathic dolphin thwarting an alien invasion on the ocean), so most film studios would have no idea what to do with it. It might make a good independent project, though.

Also, concerning sharks and dolphins, it absolutely kills me that nobody gives a shit that sharks are seriously endangered from finning (cutting off a shark's fins for soup, and then throwing the NEWLY IMMOBILE, STILL ALIVE, AND SLOWLY BLEEDING TO DEATH shark overboard), but the very idea of a tuna company accidentally getting a dolphin caught in its net is enough to have a nation completely lose its shit.

And I know they're technically mammals, I just called them fish because I seriously hate how everyone gushes over them like they're some kind of Jesus Animal.

That's the problem with adapting damn near any older video game series: video games in the 90s were fucking *weird*.

Let's look at Diddy Kong Racing. The premise is simple enough: cute jungle animals in cute pint-size transportation craft racing them. Weird things? How about... the stages, the random-ass blue elephant genie, and the complete absence of Donkey Kong. You MIGHT be able to pull it off with a Wreck-it Ralph type of attitude, but it would take some smarts. Hell, DKR would be a relatively easy one. Imagine trying to take on something truly nuts like Kirby.
  • EternityEyes
    avatar
I wouldn't go after Ecco The Dolphin with a Wreck-It-Ralph attitude. It was a much more serious game. Honestly, if they were going to make Ecco into a movie, I would want James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, or some other Sci-Fi director who could keep it true to the source material.
  • Volare3  - Oh well, guess I'll have to disagree.
    avatar
I like the movie. Nothing you said seemed to be a valid point and the way you presented it was unbelievably juvenile. With most of your reviews I can agree with something. This review and the Shrek review hold no water for me.

Angie is one of my favorite characters in CG animation. Oscar is an idiot that doesn't know what he's got until it's gone. The scene where she calls Oscar on his BS makes the film for me.

I don't expect to agree with you every time on every point but usually I can understand where you're coming from. This time, not so much.

This movie was the beginning of the Dark Age of DreamWorks Animation for me. As soon as I saw that awful trailer, I vowed to avoid DWA for many years. The trailers that would come in later years further soured my views as the company becoming "the next Pixar"--Madagascar, Over the Hedge, more Shrek sequels, and an Aardman film that would focus on toilet humor.

    Yep, I was done.
  • Prinsmarsvin
I like over the hedge, but the rest i totally agree on. The madagascar movies would deffinatly be on my list of "movies I hate, but everyone else seems to love".
  • dbz007  - Don't know what to say if it's a good movie or a b

To be honest, I used to like this movie when it first came when I was in middle school but now looking back at the movie itself. It's not as good as it used to be just from looking at this movie. All I can say is that I don't know if it's either a good movie, a bad movie, or a so so movie. All I can is that it's just not as good as it used to be. I will admit that I still got a few laughs from this but I would call this a really wierd movie now just looking back at this. So overall, I just don't what to say about this movie but all I can say is just a really wierd movie.

Unfortunately, I have seen this film, and yes, it is awful. However, I hate it for a whole other reason than has been mentioned. You know how you hate "the liar revealed" storylines? Well, for me it's the "be happy where you are" storyline. You know, the one where the protagonist has dreams of being someone special, but in the end learns to be happy where he is. In "It's a Wonderful Life" it was done well, but on the flip side you've got this expired Will Smith sushi. And most of the ones I've seen wind up on this side of the spectrum! They don't make you happy with your life, they just tell you to snuff your dreams and just deal with it, and I. Just. Fucking. Hate It.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, it just strikes a nerve. That aside, great review. I'm looking forward to the rest of the Dreamworks catalog.

Edit: By the way, did anyone else get the impression that Jack Black Fish was supposed to be gay?
  • baba44713
I pretty much dislike this movie too.

And it's also mostly because of the main character. He's just so.. unlikeable. He's selfish, he's irritating, he's full of himself and - worst of all - you know you simply need to be rooting for him just because he is played by Will Smith. So from the get-go you know you are stuck with this self-centered jerkfish..ugh.

I also agree that the celebrities are too obvious. When I watched Shrek I saw Shrek and Donkey, not Myers and Murphy. Here all I see is celebrities depicted as fish. And the plot was meandering at best.

An extremely skippable movie, even for Dreamworks fans.

It helps that Shrek and Donkey don't look like Myers and Murphy. The ink-suit actor effect is strong in this movie, and it's horribly done. How to do it right: Brutal Legend.

I have to agree with Doug that this is BY FAR the worst Dreamworks movie I've ever seen...and that's a bold statement considering I've seen Shrek The Third. The worst part about it was I heard the cast they had for it and thought, yeah, this could be good. I mean, Finding Nemo was a pretty good movie and that had some big stars in it. Although, I do agree that this did feel like a Finding Nemo ripoff.

After I watched it, wow...where do I begin? They turned Will Smith, who is one of the most likable people in Hollywood into the dumbest, biggest piece of shit characters I've ever seen. There was not one thing that was likable about Oscar. It seemed like Will was trying 10x harder than he normally does to be funny and he wasn't. All the other characters seemed to be just there to fit the character archetypes. The writing was horrible, WAY overdoing it with the fish puns. The animation design was just bizarre. While I didn't find Oscar's design "creepy" like Doug does, I did think it was an ugly fucking design. I thought the animators were trying way too hard to get the fish in the movie to look like the actors who are playing them. If I want to see the actors in this movie, make a live-action film, not an animated one.

The best way I can describe this project is it seemed as though Dreamworks was trying something, testing the market with what sort of movies they should be making. I think they learned through this colossal flop that they shouldn't try and follow the popular, trendy route and rip off everything Disney does. They're a great animation company in their own right and have better, more creative ideas than this dead goldfish that's better off being flushed down the toilet.

This movie had one line that I really liked: "Deep down, I'm really superficial." It's just such a perfect summary of her character and a decent joke to boot. And one of the rare cases where a character pointing out their own character flaw feels like something they'd willingly say and not just the dialog equivalent of the writer making a "This character sucks" sign and then forcing them to hold it themselves.

I think i watched this movie only once or twice in my life, actually when it played in cinemas and years later i rented it on DVD... why, i don´t know. I think i laughed a few times, but even as a kid i knew that this movie wasn´t very good. Yeah, from an adult standpoint, the fishes look indeed creepy, but i have to be honest, i would watch this movie again, but this time the english version (i´m german), so i can hear all the celebrities, i mean, Martin Scorsese and Robert de Niro in an animated movie? That is worth the price i think. But yeah, this is one of, if not THE weakest Dreamworks-Movie.

Yeah I never saw this movie, even if a lot of kids I knew at the time were having a passive-aggressive turf war over whether Shark Tale was better than Finding Nemo...

Good to know that it was not. Now I can't get the image of Will Smith Fish's yellow rubber face off my retinas... GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT THAT WOULD HAVE DONE TO ME AS A CHILD!!
