I can see where you're coming from, Doug, but I dunno. I never liked this one as much as I did the original. But that also has a lot to do with my being so over everything getting a sequel. Can films not stand alone any longer? Especially since this spawned another two sequels! Not to mention the Christmas special and "Puss in Boots". I don't understand. While you didn't like it, I always thought that the first movie was fine on its own and didn't need to be dragged to hell and beaten to death like Pixar did with Cars. And that only took one sequel.
-
I disagree. I loved Shrek 2. I really liked the first Shrek, but Shrek 2 is the rare occurrence where the sequel is better than the first. I loved the music in Shrek 2. I loved the action in it. I loved the little pop culture references they play. Like how "Knights" is a parody of Cops. I found it hilarious. I like how Fiona was really expecting Prince Charming to rescue her in the first movie. It's not just a figure of speech, it's a name. I thought that was funny. So basically in short, I did like the first movie. But I say Shrek 2 is favorite out of the series. Shrek 3... Well, we'll get there eventually, lol.
-
The original film lent it self pretty well to a sequel, though: Fiona was a princess, after all, and it's clear she had a family. There's also the fact that she, and Shrek, went through a really big life change and that needed to be dealt with.
I think basically everything after Shrek 2 never needed to exist, but this one made total sense.

I'll be honest: I like Shrek.
But Shrek 2...I don't remember a thing except the giant gingerbread man. Maybe it's time for a second viewing?
Shrek 3 is awful but I hope you review it too.
And Shrek 4...Honestly, I was over the Shrek sequel craze by then but Shrek 4 is just as good if not BETTER than 1 (or, in Doug's case, 2). It has all the good stuff and it's definitely the darkest of the series. And as much as others dislike and mock it, I love seeing these sort-of-kids'-films taking darker tones. Best sequel I've seen in a long time and a FOURTH FILM too. Few fourth films in a series are even mediocre, let alone as great as Shrek 4. Hope Doug gives it a go too. :D
Also, FIRST TIME EVER on the first page. Woo! Great timing. Where's Casper at when you need him?

02.11.2013 - 00:21 | sunnylI never bothered to watch the previews for Shrek 4, let alone the film.
Shrek 3 was bad, the TV christmas special is one of the most godawful pieces of television ever made, massive waste of half an hour of my life.
And the Puss in Boots movie royally sucked, there wasn't one laugh in the entire film.
Shrek 2 though, that is indeed a great film, really carried by Antonio, but as Doug says, it has all the elements.
There is just one major and absolutely devastatingly stupid flaw in the movie.
At the end, they have the godmother's wand, they can use it to restore the king, but they leave him as a frog.
Stupid!

I loved this movie when it came out and I still love it today. By that time, I was well aware that Dreamworks had closed their hand-drawn animation department after the disappointment of Sinbad. I remember thinking that if they kept making films as good and creative as Shrek 2, everything would be okay.
Later that year, Shark Tale came out...

02.09.2013 - 22:37 | LordLauchlinGood to see you marching on with Dreamworksuary. For a future NC episode or what have you, could it be possible to review "Avatar:the Last Airbender"? Thank you and keep up the good work.

02.09.2013 - 22:46 | ZikonOMG! I hate this movie so much! the fairygodmother drives me insane! and not in a positive way! she is so annoying, blabbers on about random crap. the other characters were fine, i agree with the first comment, i enjoyed the first Shrek more than this one. it was just fine on it's own. I wish dreamworks would do more movies like The Road to Eldorado, that movie is amazing!!! the animation is superb! but Shrek 2? nah, i wish that Dreamworks would have put their effort into making original content instead of making like, idk, 5 stupid Shrek movies in total! like talk about milking it! i actually found that the humor is kinda crappy, and i do understand all humor, even Bill Murray's dry humor i enjoy more than this. and the music sucked in Shrek 2 as well, like the only memorable song that i can think of is the one at the end, and i don't even know if that is an original song or taken from an artist,

It's hard for me to decide which one is better, this or the original. They have a different feelings coming out of them I agree with NChick that the original was hateful towards Disney. I can actually feel that. But it still felt like a fairy tale from a book. This one has a much more loose feeling to it, and yet feels more mature and realistic. It moves past the happily ever after to show some, what I think, realistic problems and choices you have to make during marriage. I love both, which is why I have them on DVD. BTW, did anyone else think the Fairy Godmother put the curse on Fiona, and it was some dastardly scheme to rule the kingdom through her son's marriage to Fiona?

I like Shrek 2 better than the first movie, though I like all of them, even Shrek 3, though I think it's my least preferred out of all of them. I can't remember if I've seen Puss in Boots. I agree about the jokes in this one. I like how they play on fairy tales like Cinderella's shoe store and that Sleeping Beauty is a narcoleptic. I think Katzenberg was still taking a few small shots at Disney, such as that scene you were showing there where Fiona chucks the mermaid into the water to be eaten by sharks. Anyone else notice the similarities with Ariel from Disney's the Little Mermaid?
I'm hoping that Dreamworks eventually starts up their 2D animation studio again because the 2D films you were reviewing looked really good, though their 3D stuff is good too, as evidenced by this movie.

I love both 1, 2, and 4. (Third was meh) But I admit 1 did do some tired old cliches. (The liar revealed) 2 was more creative and it had Puss in Boots as a Zorro parody. Also, I like that Shrek 2 that the romance is about a couple who's already married. I'm kind of tired of romances only being about "will they get together or not?" and it's refreshing to see a couple who's already married for a change.

02.10.2013 - 00:44 | pomaflahThis one was good, since it eliminated a lot of the cheap humor from the first and started to flesh out the universe a lot more. Also, I love Julie Andrews, so I liked seeing her again. But some of the jokes were terrible, like the Pinnochio cross-dresser one, and that's why I disliked it.

02.10.2013 - 00:27 | wolfwingI like shrek 4, but my biggest issue with it is....I REALLY REALLY hate reset movies/shows, where everythign up to that point means nothing.
all that charecter development and such....doesn't happen except if lucky one or two chars....by the end...I was actualy hoping time wouldn't reset becuase I was so invested in those chars.

I also agree with you on this one. The second film had some hype and it really paid off well, even Puss and Boots i liked in this movie. I am not one for sequels but this one paid off.
Had a feeling you would have liked this movie. Shark Tale on the other hand. you may or may not like. But looking forward to that review regardless.
