While I agree that the "misunderstanding" cliche part is annoying and unneeded, it certainly doesn't kill the whole movie for me. I honestly love the hell out of this flick. Eddie Murphy's really hilarious, FAR better than in "Mulan"! But if you just didn't get the jokes or dialouge, or did get them but didn't laugh at 'em, I can understand and respect that. In my opinion, though, its one of the few truly good Dreamworks films.

And yes, the message at the end is represented BEAUTIFULLY! *mutters* Far better than friggin' "Beauty and the Beast", the abomination...

I think in Shrek it carries more of a "beauty comes in different/all forms" and Beauty and the Beast had more of a "appearance doesn't matter" and the fact that Belle fell for a person and not a face, just as Shrek and Fiona did. Both did these messages well, I think
  • Floweramon
    This. Plus, three other things:

    1. Him turning human was suppose to be the Beast's reward for finally changing and finding true love, not Belle's. They make it pretty clear in the movie that it's him that has the big hang up about his looks; for Belle, it was his temper and attitude (though the looks didn't help the first impression)

    2. If they hadn't turned him back, the movie would've been protested for promoting beastiality (you know there would've been people going there)

    3. Lastly, what about the servants? The other part of the curse was for them to turn back to human too. And in a way, their situation was worse. Some of them were stuck in place, others were fragile cookware or made of wood. Think about all that broken furniture in the West Wing.... So yeah, it was a bit more pertinent for the curse to be broken for them.

"Far better than friggin' "Beauty and the Beast", the abomination..."

Err, no. You can say that the moral was better executed, but BATB was a million times better written than Shrek on the rest.

It's like Alien compared to Prometheus. The former had a beautiful story but dated special effects, the latter had less dated special effects but was otherwise completely unambiguously crappy.

I agree with the misunderstanding bit of the film Doug. It is kind of a road block. But the rest of the film, I loved as a kid and still love now. I kept quoting Eddie Murphy's waffle line over and over again after I saw the trailer. I just found it hilarious. I think maybe the reason you're not getting it is you're thinking too much into it. It's like watching Adventure Time. First time I saw an episode I was so confused. I couldn't figure anything out or why so many of my friends like to watch it. That's when I heard that I was thinking too much into it. You don't think about the jokes. You just accept it. Only until you reach that state of being, will you understand the waffle joke. It's because it doesn't make any sense and the way Eddie Murphy says it that makes it funny. The fact that he's so excited to be staying with Shrek and is so annoying contributes to the comedy. But I can see why you don't like it and that's fine. Shrek 2 is by far the best of the series in my opinion. So I can't wait to see what you thought of it. :)

Love the Shrek franchise. Detest Pixar, don't like anything else by Dreamworks.

What can I say? I really have limited tolerance for family friendly entertainment, clean humor, & puns. Shrek has dark, gutter, adult appeal.

Ok this comment just made me sick.
  • James Picard  - You're right about the Mulan thing, but . . .
that's only because it actually used him to his full potential. The problem with doing that in Mulan was that it was very less comedy-focused than Shrek. Also, just so you're aware, you may be targeted bu the rabid Beauty and the Beast fans for your opinion. That's not me, but there are people who will defend that movie like the cult of Whedon defends Joss.

lol Beauty and the Beast is supposed to be about how looks can be deceiving. Belle falls in love with the kind, sensitive part of the Beast despite his monstrous appearance... Gaston, the villain, was a good looking heart throb but turns out to be the bad guy...

Don't diss it, other than Fantasia it's Doug's favourite disney film and it's the same for a lot of people...
  • freebird405
Doug, you have my respect. In fact I love hearing you rant! But I hope you will be gentle on "Kung Fu Panda." I LOVE LOVE IT. I look forward to hearing your love of Shrek 2.

He did a Bum Review of Kung Fu Panda and said he loved it, so I think you're good. ;)

yeah, but the bum likes every movie.

Lol. No, when he used to do the one line explaining how he really felt he said he liked it. I've also heard him say he liked it in a panel.
  • Chibi_Kohai  - KungFu number 2 Was Better
    avatar
The first one was cute, but the fight scene at the end left me feeling a bit jupped, like when your friend borrows $2 and pays you back $1.50. Number two, however, was friggin awesome. The kung fu was cool, the villan, gah it was awesome.
  • Sakuradrops  - Interesting

I actually find it pretty interesting to hear the opinions of someone who doesn't absolutely love the first Shrek so thanks for yet again being brave enough to voice your real opinions of on a movie that most people love yet you don't really get much out of it. I'm surprised it wasn't on your original list of movies you don't like but everyone else loves, since more people seem to like this than Cars. Can't wait to hear what you think of the sequel though! : )

I'm on the side of agreeing with Doug for most of his points. The "liar revealed" shit gets old, and is my most hated part of ANY movie. On the other hand, I like this movie.

The humour is scatter-shot, yes, but for the most part it has good comedy. The bridge dialogue was a parody of every rickety bridge scene in film history. It's funny how much Shrek doesn't give a shit. The onion dialogue was funny because of how much Donkey was missing the point. Although, I was waiting for Shrek to ask Fiona how the hell she could feed herself whilst trapped in the castle.

More parody of fairy tales and less Tarantino dialogue would make this film better.
  • SRanger1071
Why did this thing get the Oscar?
  • JoseMLuna  - Same here
The thing is, I'm mostly with you on this one. I also didn't like that much the first Shrek Movie. It's a very hateful film. Still, I love the second one! It's one of my Dreamworks favorites, the perfect comedy with a great original plot.

    "It's a very hateful film"

Have you seen Lindsay's videos about the DreamWorks/Disney rivalry? She talks about how she feels some of the earlier DreamWorks movies--especially Shrek--were pretty much Katzenberg giving Disney the middle finger.

  • MissPrettyKitty  - My thoughts
    avatar
I didn't find the movie boring. At most between Shrek and Donkey, I thought that all that time they were getting to know eachother, and growing as characters and friends towards each other. I wasn't bored or sleeping at all when I first saw the movie. What I just put is what I got from the movie.
  • aks12  - Concede on some points
    Hi Doug,

I would never write you hate mail simply because I don't agree with you. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. It's a free country. (Getting off my soapbox.)

I happen to like this film, though yes, the whole "misunderstanding plotline" has been DONE TO DEATH!!!

I also completely agree, Shrek 2 is SO MUCH BETTER!!! Can't wait for your review on that! :)
  • Pink Bow
    avatar
(In Douchey McNitpick voice) How dare you hold an opinion that differs from the wider audience! You should be hanged by your balls and have your eyelashes BURNED!

Just kidding. I love Shrek to death, and I was laughing just at the clips you were showing. But I love an honest and well-formed opinion, even if I disagree with it.

I guess most people find it funny not really because of clever jokes, but because we find the characters funny. The "waffles" joke is funny to me because of the way Eddie Murphy delivers of the line. Most of the humor, actually, is just the way they deliver their lines. But, if you don't like the characters that much, then I guess it makes sense you wouldn't like the movie that much.
  • Malvolio21
I second that. As the NC said in his Christopher Walken moments countdown, a good comic can read the phone book and make it entertaining. Anyone else saying those "waffle" and "parfait" lines would probably get yawns, but Eddie Murphy's delivery is what makes them work. The comic timing with him and Mike Myers, I think, is also very effective.
  • Prinsmarsvin  - My first, way too long comment
This is not my kind of movie. In fact I don't like any of the Shrek movies. I guess that I prefer a different kind of comedy. The closest thing to liking a shrek movie I got was puss in boots. I like the movies like sinbad and road to el dorado much better than things like his and kun fu panda. I totally agree with you nc.

This movie is more cute than funny, and I guess I can see how that could be a turn off. And yes the misunderstanding bit was laammmee
  • Chetoos
I understand where you're coming from on this movie, and while I did like it, thinking back, I might not like it as much now. I also wanted to let you know that you missed Tangled and Wreck it Ralph in your disneycember thing. I don't know if this has been mentioned, it probably has, but I just wanted to say it, because it's been bothering me for a while.
  • CyborgPrince
    avatar
Actually Doug did Tangled as part of his first Disneycember on a technicality.
  • Principal Snyder
    avatar
Well, you didn't like the Emperor's New Groove, so I'm not really surprised. You're allowed to dislike Shrek, just know that you're wrong.
  • Zihon  - in latin america it's better
    avatar
this its one of the movies that actually i love the dub more than the sub, some jokes are changed to betters one (like the ones that doug put as example) the donkey gets a better voice, because he doesnt need a famous voice (its actually more high and anoying, but its fit so good) as example.
  • HUNRonin  - ...so it is in Hungary
    avatar
You took the words right out of my mouth :D. I think the Hungarian voiceactors were much better. Maybe that's because they're primarily voiceactors. Anyway I think Eddie Murphy and MIke Myers sound kinda lifeless and boring compared to them.
  • Zihon
    avatar
i have never been in hungary XD ajjaja i just talk about what i know for that i put an example so closed.
  • TragicGuineaPig

Yeah, Shrek 2 was much funnier than the original! Can't wait for that one!
  • FishEyenoMiko
    avatar
Honestly, it's always sort of bugged me that in a movie that has the message of not judging a book by its cover, they make several jokes about the villain... being short. Yeah, he's an asshole, but then make fun of that, not his height. Sheesh.
  • Gaiash
    avatar
You'll get no hate mail from me on this one. Your criticisms are valid and at no point say it sucks, just that it wasn't for you. And more importantly you end by pointing out Shrek 2 is better, which it is. Shrek 2 was fantastic.
  • Mrhat
    avatar
I totally agree, this movie's only okay to me. Wasn't horrible, wasn't that great, and it just never really stuck to me like it did a lot of other people. I love the second one though. Didn't care much for the third, and never bothered with the fourth, but I can't wait for your take on those.

I hate that this is the film that won the first best animated film oscar
  • Ospero
Remember who/what it was up against. "Jimmy Neutron" and "Monsters Inc." were not really any better. 2001 just wasn't that good a year for animation, I guess.
  • venkarl

Now see, this is interesting, because this is exactly how I feel about Shrek 2.

I actually have to agree. I mean, I enjoyed Shrek just fine, but I thought it was a bit boring and some of the parts that were /trying/ to be funny (e.i: the huge karaoke party at the end)just came off as annoying or awkward to me. Or both. But, I loved the message, the twist at the end with Fiona turning into her 'true form,' and I loved the banter between Donkey and Shrek (I just like Puss a bit more than them). Oh yeah, and the scene with Robin Hood and the Merry Men was freaking hilarious.
But, I LOVED the sequel ten times better. And not just because of Puss.... Though he was the most epic thing in the series.
  • Knightbook
    YOU DIDN'T LIKE SHREK
Well that's okay, I didn't like it much either. My dad took me to see it when I was a kid and honestly, it was seriously not my favorite movie. There were good parts, and I think the ending moral is done really well. But it just wasn't for me. I actually liked the sequel a lot better, and while I've seen the sequels to Shrek several times, I've only seen the first one a few times, majorly when friends or family want to watch it. I'm looking forward to your Shrek 2 review because I think that one was a lot better than the first.
  • TheAngryAnimeAddict

I don't like Shrek just because all of the characters seem kinda repulsive to me. Except for maybe the small exception of Fiona, but she's still terrible like the rest of the cast.
  • Dutchtica

Seriously though I don't like Shrek.

I am of the opinion Shrek 2 > Shrek Forever After > Shrek > Shrek 3
  • TheBechtloff

You don't like Shrek?! A pox on you and your house Doug!

Nah, but seriously while I like Shrek I can see your point. Plus the sequels are pretty terrible in my mind.
  • Emilie Bennett
That's okay, Doug. Shrek isn't my cup of tea because of all the toilet humor. But I thought Donkey was pretty funny for the sake of being funny.
  • Tchiii
Hi. Im a French Canadian. When I first go to watch that movie, it was the french translation. And it was so funny. I still watch the later ones in english because I like the accent and everything. But the first one is better in french. The jokes are funny.
When I got to watch it inenglish, I was bored, like you... So I understand.
It's just like the fift element. It's a movie to watch in french ;)
    /hugs

You know what, whenever he says get your hatemail ready and stuff, I'm usually not that cheesed off at what he has to say. Sure, I might disagree but he actually explains his reasoning and the flaws instead of just saying "I hate it and it sucks" like, oh, 90% if the internet.

Also, I'm not a diehard fan of shrek and totally agree with you with some of the plot and humor bits but, come on, how did you not laugh at the waffles bit? The delivery is so adorable and hilarious I nearly wet myself when I first heard it XD

but yeah I'm actually really surprised at how popular this film became, even when I was a bit younger I never thought much of it.

    waffles. tee hee!

I thought this was an Ok movie, but I really liked Shrek 2 better. I never saw Shrek 3
  • animegx43
I personaly see Shrek 3 to be the weakest of the four, but that's my opinion.
  • jutuomin  - Personally..
I think Shrek 3 is probably that best one from the whole series.
  • Semudara
    avatar
Most people didn't like Shrek 3, myself included. Sadly, because of that, a lot of folks didn't even give the fourth one a chance, and I think that was possibly the best of the series.
  • jutuomin  - Oh..
I haven't seen Shrek 4. So I'll take back to say 3rd one is the best. It's the best one I've seen though.
And to me it was quite close that I never went to see Shrek 3. As I was really dissappointed with Shrek 2. It's by far the worst of the series for sure (that I've seen).. It was a lucky accident that I was on a date that week and nothing else seemed good at all so we decided to go to see Shrek 3. Good choise.
