02.08.2013 - 00:03 | FloweramonThis. Plus, three other things:
1. Him turning human was suppose to be the Beast's reward for finally changing and finding true love, not Belle's. They make it pretty clear in the movie that it's him that has the big hang up about his looks; for Belle, it was his temper and attitude (though the looks didn't help the first impression)
2. If they hadn't turned him back, the movie would've been protested for promoting beastiality (you know there would've been people going there)
3. Lastly, what about the servants? The other part of the curse was for them to turn back to human too. And in a way, their situation was worse. Some of them were stuck in place, others were fragile cookware or made of wood. Think about all that broken furniture in the West Wing.... So yeah, it was a bit more pertinent for the curse to be broken for them.

"Far better than friggin' "Beauty and the Beast", the abomination..."
Err, no. You can say that the moral was better executed, but BATB was a million times better written than Shrek on the rest.
It's like Alien compared to Prometheus. The former had a beautiful story but dated special effects, the latter had less dated special effects but was otherwise completely unambiguously crappy.

I agree with the misunderstanding bit of the film Doug. It is kind of a road block. But the rest of the film, I loved as a kid and still love now. I kept quoting Eddie Murphy's waffle line over and over again after I saw the trailer. I just found it hilarious. I think maybe the reason you're not getting it is you're thinking too much into it. It's like watching Adventure Time. First time I saw an episode I was so confused. I couldn't figure anything out or why so many of my friends like to watch it. That's when I heard that I was thinking too much into it. You don't think about the jokes. You just accept it. Only until you reach that state of being, will you understand the waffle joke. It's because it doesn't make any sense and the way Eddie Murphy says it that makes it funny. The fact that he's so excited to be staying with Shrek and is so annoying contributes to the comedy. But I can see why you don't like it and that's fine. Shrek 2 is by far the best of the series in my opinion. So I can't wait to see what you thought of it. :)

that's only because it actually used him to his full potential. The problem with doing that in Mulan was that it was very less comedy-focused than Shrek. Also, just so you're aware, you may be targeted bu the rabid Beauty and the Beast fans for your opinion. That's not me, but there are people who will defend that movie like the cult of Whedon defends Joss.

02.06.2013 - 18:31 | freebird405Doug, you have my respect. In fact I love hearing you rant! But I hope you will be gentle on "Kung Fu Panda." I LOVE LOVE IT. I look forward to hearing your love of Shrek 2.

I actually find it pretty interesting to hear the opinions of someone who doesn't absolutely love the first Shrek so thanks for yet again being brave enough to voice your real opinions of on a movie that most people love yet you don't really get much out of it. I'm surprised it wasn't on your original list of movies you don't like but everyone else loves, since more people seem to like this than Cars. Can't wait to hear what you think of the sequel though! : )

I'm on the side of agreeing with Doug for most of his points. The "liar revealed" shit gets old, and is my most hated part of ANY movie. On the other hand, I like this movie.
The humour is scatter-shot, yes, but for the most part it has good comedy. The bridge dialogue was a parody of every rickety bridge scene in film history. It's funny how much Shrek doesn't give a shit. The onion dialogue was funny because of how much Donkey was missing the point. Although, I was waiting for Shrek to ask Fiona how the hell she could feed herself whilst trapped in the castle.
More parody of fairy tales and less Tarantino dialogue would make this film better.

The thing is, I'm mostly with you on this one. I also didn't like that much the first Shrek Movie. It's a very hateful film. Still, I love the second one! It's one of my Dreamworks favorites, the perfect comedy with a great original plot.

Hi Doug,
I would never write you hate mail simply because I don't agree with you. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. It's a free country. (Getting off my soapbox.)
I happen to like this film, though yes, the whole "misunderstanding plotline" has been DONE TO DEATH!!!
I also completely agree, Shrek 2 is SO MUCH BETTER!!! Can't wait for your review on that! :)

(In Douchey McNitpick voice) How dare you hold an opinion that differs from the wider audience! You should be hanged by your balls and have your eyelashes BURNED!
Just kidding. I love Shrek to death, and I was laughing just at the clips you were showing. But I love an honest and well-formed opinion, even if I disagree with it.
I guess most people find it funny not really because of clever jokes, but because we find the characters funny. The "waffles" joke is funny to me because of the way Eddie Murphy delivers of the line. Most of the humor, actually, is just the way they deliver their lines. But, if you don't like the characters that much, then I guess it makes sense you wouldn't like the movie that much.
-
02.06.2013 - 20:00 | Malvolio21I second that. As the NC said in his Christopher Walken moments countdown, a good comic can read the phone book and make it entertaining. Anyone else saying those "waffle" and "parfait" lines would probably get yawns, but Eddie Murphy's delivery is what makes them work. The comic timing with him and Mike Myers, I think, is also very effective.
-
This is not my kind of movie. In fact I don't like any of the Shrek movies. I guess that I prefer a different kind of comedy. The closest thing to liking a shrek movie I got was puss in boots. I like the movies like sinbad and road to el dorado much better than things like his and kun fu panda. I totally agree with you nc.

02.06.2013 - 19:32 | ChetoosI understand where you're coming from on this movie, and while I did like it, thinking back, I might not like it as much now. I also wanted to let you know that you missed Tangled and Wreck it Ralph in your disneycember thing. I don't know if this has been mentioned, it probably has, but I just wanted to say it, because it's been bothering me for a while.

I actually have to agree. I mean, I enjoyed Shrek just fine, but I thought it was a bit boring and some of the parts that were /trying/ to be funny (e.i: the huge karaoke party at the end)just came off as annoying or awkward to me. Or both. But, I loved the message, the twist at the end with Fiona turning into her 'true form,' and I loved the banter between Donkey and Shrek (I just like Puss a bit more than them). Oh yeah, and the scene with Robin Hood and the Merry Men was freaking hilarious.
But, I LOVED the sequel ten times better. And not just because of Puss.... Though he was the most epic thing in the series.

02.06.2013 - 19:57 | KnightbookYOU DIDN'T LIKE SHREK
Well that's okay, I didn't like it much either. My dad took me to see it when I was a kid and honestly, it was seriously not my favorite movie. There were good parts, and I think the ending moral is done really well. But it just wasn't for me. I actually liked the sequel a lot better, and while I've seen the sequels to Shrek several times, I've only seen the first one a few times, majorly when friends or family want to watch it. I'm looking forward to your Shrek 2 review because I think that one was a lot better than the first.

02.06.2013 - 20:05 | TchiiiHi. Im a French Canadian. When I first go to watch that movie, it was the french translation. And it was so funny. I still watch the later ones in english because I like the accent and everything. But the first one is better in french. The jokes are funny.
When I got to watch it inenglish, I was bored, like you... So I understand.
It's just like the fift element. It's a movie to watch in french ;)

You know what, whenever he says get your hatemail ready and stuff, I'm usually not that cheesed off at what he has to say. Sure, I might disagree but he actually explains his reasoning and the flaws instead of just saying "I hate it and it sucks" like, oh, 90% if the internet.
Also, I'm not a diehard fan of shrek and totally agree with you with some of the plot and humor bits but, come on, how did you not laugh at the waffles bit? The delivery is so adorable and hilarious I nearly wet myself when I first heard it XD
but yeah I'm actually really surprised at how popular this film became, even when I was a bit younger I never thought much of it.
waffles. tee hee!

I haven't seen Shrek 4. So I'll take back to say 3rd one is the best. It's the best one I've seen though.
And to me it was quite close that I never went to see Shrek 3. As I was really dissappointed with Shrek 2. It's by far the worst of the series for sure (that I've seen).. It was a lucky accident that I was on a date that week and nothing else seemed good at all so we decided to go to see Shrek 3. Good choise.
And yes, the message at the end is represented BEAUTIFULLY! *mutters* Far better than friggin' "Beauty and the Beast", the abomination...
