Great vid! :) I yelled "YES!!" when you brought up Mel brooks lol, he's my hero. There were some of the influences you pointed out that I'm not as familiar with, but most of them I did grow up with and are splendiffericously awesome. I was stuck to the tv screen whenever the loony tunes was on as a kid.
Now i think it's time to start a drinking game. whenever doug looks like he's trying to slap you through the camera take a shot!. I got the Vodka!!

I definitely see a lot of Blackadder in the character of Nostalgia Critic, especially in stuff like Kickassia and the Christmas Special where he is so miserable he wants to make everyone else feels the same way. I also see the cartoons and the parody movies in your stuff, Doug, and I think that's what makes the shows and reviews so enjoyable. Like in the recent Langoliers review where the guy turned into a cartoon, that KILLED me the first time I saw it XD
-
It seems like you forgot to cut your live footage when you first start talking about animainicas (sp).
Other than that entertaining video, even though I'm a tad too young to have the exact same set of influences, quite a few of them are similar.
-
03.20.2011 - 23:54 | Michaelc560I lost it when i saw that video of daffy duck. I almost fell out of my chair, i forgot how funny that episode was.

03.21.2011 - 00:34 | IffySAMPlease keep putting up more of these shows. They're every bit as entertaining as your in-character reviews.
That's a good thing, BTW.
It's nice to get to know Doug the Doug and not just Doug the Critic.
EDIT: Oh yeah, where was George Carlin? Sarcastic? Critical observer? Humor based around how everything (in this case, almost everything you watch and review) is horrible and just plain wrong and they should already know that? That's him. And that's you. Did you just forget George like you almost forgot MST3K?
-
It is possible Doug may not be a fan of Carlin. That style of comedy may have started with Carlin but Doug may have learned it from other people. Not so odd since I never knew Carlin was a stand up comedian until Dogma came out.
To me he was always (and will probably always be) Rufus from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.
-
03.25.2011 - 11:55 | uknownadaMaybe he's like me: one of the few people who think Carlin isn't just an older Dane Cook is just rants and isn't funny at all.
(I've won the award for most thumb downs for this comment)

Never thought Robbin Williams was funny in family comedies, better in "Death to Smoochy", but he ways perfect for "Toys" & he's a good actor in serious films like "The Final Cut."
I remember watching Dave Chapelle & Carlos Mencia back to back. His TV series was too short-lived.
If I could only get one show back on TV, it would be Animaniacs. But thanks to how sensitive our country has become, it would now be deemed inappropriate for children & put on Adult Swum.
Who doesn't love Bill Murray?
Black Adder the 3ed is my favorite Atkinson series too. I love his malignant sense of humor. He does really well playing the straight man between two complete imbiciles. (If you like UK dark comedies, try "Absolutely Fabulous).
I remember when the Daily Show was new, when Colbert was the reporter, they had a gay guy that reviewed movies, & Lewis Black worked there too.
"Airplane!" was the first movie I saw Leslie Nielsen in. I used to confuse wim with George Gaynes from "Police Academy." "Mafia" was awesome too, they just don't make movies like that anymore.
Love Parker & Stone; South Park, Orgasmo, Cannibal the Musical, Baseketball.
The newer Star Wars movies were screaming for a new Space Balls satire series.
I miss violent slapstick, especially with gross-out humor. From Tom & Jerry & Merry Melodies to Ren & Stimpy & Rocko's Modern Life.
I was going to see Lewis Black live in April, but his presale tickets sold fast & the remaining seats skyrocketed to $95-$350. They won't let him star because his swearing makes the censors cry.
I got to see Monty Python without a laugh track; it doesn't lessen the humor at all.
Im suprised you picked Simpsons instead of the creator's other show: "The Critic." lol.
Daffy was my favorite :3 Doesn't he remind you of Black Adder? (You might like Strong Bad from "Homestar Runner;" he's Daffy to Homestar's Bugs, & sort of in reverse yet. There's also the guys from "Unforgotten Realms").

Really interesting videos, besides being entertaining they also work as recommendations to people who are training to be comedians or critics. I hope you keep doing these.
What do you think about a list of your favorite moments in other reviews of the site? It will be really interesting to hear your appreciation of the best episodes of Linkara or Nostalgia Chick.
And I totally understand what you say about Eric Idle.
"Always look on the bright side of life!"
-
You need some Bill Cosby in your list Doug! :D
(Eating a jello puddin pop, and watching reruns of the Cosby Show)
Also Doug, please come on down to Texas!! I mean I guess I could stalk Angry Joe, yet I think that would get him Angry.. and Geisha Joe could kick my ass.
Also I had a question for the fine people who comment on this board, Spoony is selling head shots of himself on his website. Which signed picture of Spoony should I buy?

I love when you make tops like this~!
I agree with you on Robie Williams on stand up, it's amazing~! the quantity and quality of jokes this man makes is awesome~!
Animaniacs...i have nothing but awesome memories of that show it pretty much made my childhood, pinky and the brain, the mime, good idea bad idea all the sketches we're so epic! to look back at them as an adult and to see things you didn't saw before(referring to the naughty stuff video you made XD) or the pop references you didn't get as a kid, is like if you are watching for the first time~!
oh god south park~!! theres no one save with them XD and thats the awesome thing ~!sometimes it makes you laugh, others it makes think, and some are just wrong~! but after so many time it still has that "thing" that made it cool on the first place..which for disgrace i can't say for some shows like the Simpsons...but then again it's been 20 f-years...I love old Simpsons i don't even count the new episodes XD and yeah Maggie rocks~!
what i loved about the Simpson it was that, like you said, it had their own world..it didn't had so many pop references, it satirized the world not copied, it was their own world applied to ours, not vice versa
God Daffy~! you said it all~! is not a loony toon cartoon if that guy is not there~! you need it to "balance" the "coolness" of bugs bunny
i gotta check the rest of the comedians XD i watched them but no long enough to say something XD i gotta admit i have laugh to most of these people ,and long memorable laughs at that.

03.21.2011 - 01:17 | LockeMuheThough being from Tennessee and was able to attend the time Doug went to the 1st GMX, I sadly won't be able to attend Omnicon. I'll be busy finishing up a cosplay in preparation for MTAC which I am disappointed to see that Doug will not attend it. Oh well, maybe in a future GMX.

I agreed with some parts of the list, disagreed with others, but whether I liked them or not, I LOVED hearing you explain WHY you think they're great. Because in the end, comedy, like all other art forms, is a completely subjective thing, and all that really matters when you get to the heart of why comedy is important at all is WHY people like what they like.
So that was great, and especially your #1 choice. Not surprising (nor should it be, to anyone who's paid attention for a little while), but I really loved just how you put all that about Daffy representing a sort of vulnerability that most people can relate to. I think that's very true, and something I love about comedy. I've noticed that myself in what I find funny in my favourite comedians -- people like John Pinet who uses his weight as a comedic tool and tells these stories that really SOUND like cartoons in how over-the-top but still how likable he is... or whateverthefuck-his-name- is who's got the bit about going on a blind date with a "tall" (5'6'') girl who shows up wearing glitter and in response to him saying "What are you, a fairy?" replies "What are you, a hobbit?" I know I'm going to think of SO many more comedians later who use their flaws and faults and shortcomings (...heh) as a tool for humor.
...So yeah, I think it really is so often our vulnerability that makes us strong as performers, and especially as comedians. And that goes just as well for the Nostalgia Critic and Ask That Guy characters. The Critic is funny for all the reasons you've named again and again, and for all his hilarity in the regular videos where he's funny because he's a bastard who deserves to be burned alive, ATG is at his funniest when he just gets TRAUMATIZED by Bennett or goes all emo over the GPS and the scenario is played for laughs. The pirate guy is funny for having an overinflated ego and a bunch of fail-props, too. And do I even need to discuss Chester?
Well done, all over the board, man. For this video and in all the other stuff you do. :)

I agree with most of your choises but you lost me on The Daily Show and the Colber Report as I HATE political comedy shows that's wh I've stopped watching Family Guy! Also, you lost some points because you seam to be afraid to say the N-Word most comedians are confertible enough to say it with no malcontent!
-
03.21.2011 - 02:18 | buzzrock1I just realized something while watching this. I don't think the Nostalgia Critic has ever said the phrase "Your despicable" You need to do it Doug. At some point, there's gotta be some scenario where the Nostalgia Critic can use that phrase. It has to happen.

I *love* the old Warner Brothers cartoons, I'm even a little bit older than Doug, so I *really* grew up with them, they were on TV every afternoon when I got home from school, and I think my all time favorites were the ones where Daffy tries to convince Elmer Fudd that it's "Wabbit" season Bugs turns it around so Daffy always gets shot.
...So how the hell is it that I've never seen or even heard of the one Doug showed, where they're in the show & Daffy cracks & begs Elmer to shoot him??? I fondly remember two eps. with this basic story, both absolutely hilarious, but I swear I've never seen this third one. Could this third one be some lost episode that was for some reason never included in the package of syndicated episodes that channel 5 showed every weekday after school for like my entire childhood, and was only released on the DVD collection? Oh well, actually I'm kind of excited now; this means that there's a classic-era Bugs, Daffy & Elmer cartoon waiting out there for me to discover that I've never seen before; that hasn't happened since I was like five years old.
Oh, and FWIW, I emphatically do *not*, let me emphasize NOT, prefer when Doug does these things unscripted. They always turn out way, way to long, rambling & repetitive. He spends at least 3-4 times on each item than he needs to, and it's all taken up by him repeating the same things over & over and taking forever to get to whatever point he meant to make. These things would be a lot tighter, more coherent, and probably even have more content (in the form of points he forgets to mention in his stream-of-consciousness ramblings) if he scripted out at least a detailed outline of the points he wanted to make beforehand. To be brutally honest, these overly long, unscripted Vlogs are just plain lazy.
-
03.21.2011 - 16:36 | Vismutti
About the non-scripted style thing: I prefer scripted too, but it's really nice to have variety and I really have moods when I like to just listen to someone ranting about something or talking about something while I can work on my drawings or something and I don't have to pay too much attention to the vlog but it's there to give me something to listen to.
And secondly, it's not taking anything away from the scripted reviews, it's not like Doug's gonna stop doing them. The vlogs are just something extra that you can leave or take, whatever you please.
And lastly, it's just nice to hear Doug as Doug every now and then too.

Quoting SpaceGirlSpiff : "I love the Nostalgia Critic, but it IS really nice to hear Doug as just... Doug."
I agree ! I love the fluent anger the N.C can throw on the internet, but I also enjoy seeing Doug talk as a... normal, casual person whom anybody might talk to. It's really cool to see somebody that famous on the internet still acting like a normal person, you know, there are his characters, and there's just him, a clever guy you wish you could meet more often in your neighborhood. Keep going this way Doug, that's the way we love it (at least that's the way I love it).

Good list.
Number one is not surprising.
For me Friz Freleng and Fred Avery's stuff was brilliant.
Especially Droopy and all of the "of tomorrow" shorts,

A lot of these people I've just recently "discovered", and some I haven't even heard of. (I'm from Norway, so it's not everything that's on TV.)
However, I grew up with Loony Tunes and I really love that kind of humour still. Also, Tom & Jerry was hilarious back in the day. The new stuff isn't very good, sadly. Very sad they never aired Animaniacs here, because from what I've seen it looks really great.
-
03.21.2011 - 05:47 | 2010vivicaI think that satire hasn't really died out, it's just sort of become more "underground" i guess. While hacks like Seltzer and Friedberg have taken over the mainstream movie parodies(if you really want to call their movies that) I find a lot of the funniest satires and parodys today have come out on youtube channels. The easiest I can think of that comes to mind is the Harry Potter Musical because it's very slapstick and over the top at some points it also sticks very well to the original material and it doesn't come across as mean spirited like the movie parodys today do. Another good one is ItJustSomeRandomGuy's channel because using what limited tools he has (his actors are toys and he does most of the voices) he shows what's great about comic book characters and gives a lot of really smart critique on the way comic book movies are headed, like when he talks about how if they make everything dark and gritty it takes away a lot of the essence the characters had to begin with.
All that being said I like the majority of people in your list and I can see hints of quite a few of them in your videos and since I'm guessing that was your intent, good job! :D

03.21.2011 - 06:03 | phoenixwizardI knew from the beginning it would be Daffy. The Nostalgia Critic has that same charm. That wacky personality about him. But put him in with someone goofier, like Spoony, the results are him being the annoyed straightman.
In Kickassia, the way the Nostalgia Critic goes mad with power, is something Daffy would do if he ever got power.
Great choices.

03.21.2011 - 16:06 | Ohsha
Dave Chappelle: He is fantastic as a comedian, but also as a supporting character. He was fantastic in Undercover Brother for instance.
Animaniacs: I just re watched your Tribute about 3 hours ago. There isn't much I can say here you haven't already said. Great show, I think it's even better as an adult actually. If you haven't yet, check out the Nostalgia Critic's tribute. It's fantastic
Bill Murray: I enjoy him and love a number of his movies. He has never really resonated deeply with me like others, though.
Rowan Atkinson: Blackadder is fantastic. I haven't watched it all, but I have enjoyed everything I've ever seen. Also his stand up skit about being in hell (I believe he was the St. Peter equivalent) is amazing. Just classic. Mr. Bean is classic and my family and I watch it on TV every Christmas. Oh and up here in Canuckland, it's usually just episodes. Not even the Mr. Bean Christmas special :p
Daily Show: I agree with everything you've said. Jon Stewart is the modern day court jester. I would only add on, that when Jon really believes in something, you see it. Go back and watch his interview with the Sept 11 first responders. You can see it in his face, his voice, his questions, everything about him how much he cares. And how much he was pissed at ANYONE involved with holding it up. Regardless of politics. He cares and as Doug said, clearly left leaning, but he debates. He has Bill O'Reilly, Republican Congressman, Tea Party members, etc on. He doesn't cut their mics, he doesn't berate them. He talks to them and they rarely find a compromise, but it is a debate. That is sadly missing in a number of places. Across the planet, not just in the US mind you.
Colbert Report: The character is unbelievable, I agree. I always love when he does break character every once and a while. It cracks me up.
Zucker Brothers & Abrahams: I love a number of their movies, but they aren't my favourites. I understand where you are coming from, but they don't really hit the same levels they do with you. Oh and I will agree Mafia was underrated. Certainly not perfect, but better then the hatred I've heard for it. Satire is dead right now, because the people making "satire" movies now-a-days have no idea what they are doing.
South Park: There are only 2 things I would add to what you said. I love the speed of the production. Last I heard it is under a week from beginning and episode to finishing. That is impressive as hell, and allows for some insanely topical episodes. Also the show can be very low brow and some episodes have only okay writing. However some of their episodes are written PHENOMENALLY. If you have check out Imaginationland. It's a 3 part episo...
