Before some of the people here start clicking thumbs down or up, let me just remind you that I'm stating my opinion only and I am addressing Dough Walker and not anyone else.
Sorry Doug, but even I have my limits. I for one wasn't bothered in the slightest during that Mako joke (and I'm a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender). I cannot deny the energy you put into the performance, and at time it was entertaining. Hell, if you changed the name of your character I might have overlooked some of the other things.
But I'm not one for blasphemy and bashing religion. Looking forward to seeing your videos in the future, but this was unacceptable.
-
02.09.2010 - 23:51 | jakenbakeMuch like religion itself...It's a joke, lighten up francis.
-
02.09.2010 - 23:55 | Spokavriel
I see it more as bashing blasphemous televangelists. Heck he even brought up John Edwards. Its really a mockery of false evangelists than of religion all the way. Even that on hold on a prayer line part goes straight to the nonsense that cheapens the Trinity Broadcast Network.
Edit: Nice use of the Francis line. My Mom and I coincidentally were talking about that character in Stripes earlier today.

There's nothing more deserving of bashing and lampooning than religion. People give it far more respect and deference than it deserves and I, for one, appreciate that Doug is willing to try out a character like this. The biggest targets are the ones that deserve to be aimed at the most and, again, religion is definitely one of those.
-
02.10.2010 - 00:16 | glu
Come on, you guys already ruining this?
I had a great time with this video, lots of laughs and you guys already start bashing religion just because one guy didn't liked it?
Truly Redbob needs to lighten up, but you guys jumping at his throat as an opportunity to bash religion was uncalled for.
Just keep the comments about the video itself, this site is for fun, not for bullshit socio.political discussion. I would really like to see this character again, don't ruin it by turning this into a shit storm.

I'd say it's militancy and fundamentalism more than anything else that needs to be lampooned.
Traits of which you have demonstrated by your own behavior here.
I'd say you and RedBob have alot in common. =_=

02.10.2010 - 02:37 | NEUTRO!
Dude, this was clearly bashing televangelists, not Christianity as a whole. Surely you can't take pastors using the power of god through their bodies curing people's ailments seriously can you? If that's religion to you then you should be standing up against every Scientology joke ever made. Believing in God is far different from believing mortal men can cure diseases using their faith. Get over it.
But I'm not one for blasphemy and bashing religion. Looking forward to seeing your videos in the future, but this was unacceptable.
The way I see it, Doug was poking fun at and parodying the televangelists style of preaching, not religion itself. If you would compare this to EdwardCurrent's videos, who plays as the perfect Christian character, I think you'd figure out which one is joking about religion and the other is joking about TGWTG and other random stuff.
-
02.10.2010 - 18:43 | Dr. FibonacciRedbob, televangelists are an insult to Christianity and faith in general, with a few exceptions. The kind of person he is making fun of is not a good example of a Christian. If you want to talk about what is blasphemous, what is more blasphemous: making fun of an obnoxious character archetype, or making a blatant attempt to put yourself in the place of God in the hearts and minds of the faithful. From a Christian perspective, few things should be more offensive than a false Christ. But in all but name, that is who these people are. With a couple exceptions. A man like that deserves to be made fun of.
Also they're really fucking irritating.
-
02.10.2010 - 23:53 | poisontongueOh Jesus Christ, grow up Jesusfag.
Funny, you don't have any problem insulting Atheists, do you? Hypocrite.
It's losers like you that deserve to be strung up by your thumbs for the religion you so devoutly worship.
Wuss.
-
10.19.2010 - 19:16 | Lucia32
Oh Jesus Christ, grow up Jesusfag.
Nice one, Captain Homophobe. Guys like you really make me sick when you do that. The church I'm with is Gay-Affirming, and I have worked for years advocating for the rights of homosexual persons. So yeah, your first line sickens me to the core.
Funny, you don't have any problem insulting Atheists, do you? Hypocrite.
He's a jackass on that score, all right. But just because someone does that does not justify...
It's losers like you that deserve to be strung up by your thumbs for the religion you so devoutly worship.
Wuss.
...this.
You have no leg to stand on. RedBob may have been rude and unfriendly. But claiming that someone needs to suffer and die for their beliefs is wrong.
Atheist states in real-life have done and still do exactly that. With the same callousness and brutality of even the most crushing Theocracy.
The Reign of Terror, Maoist China, North Korea, the list goes on.
It's people like you that give Atheists a bad name.

10.19.2010 - 19:25 | Lucia32Redbob,
Enough.
Read slowly:
There. Was. No. Blasphemy. In. This. Video.
He was making fun of televangelists and fundamentalist preachers. Greedy souls who have no respect for the faith as anything more than a means to gain power and amass wealth.
Seriously. It's fundamentalist dudes like you that give all Christians a bad name.

I'm doing well. I envy the east. Being stuck in Reno NV its rarer for people to want to pull something like that convention appearance so far out of the way.
Really well selected costume.
And there was a slip up on find using fine. But I left it because Doug ended up pointing out how attractive your appearance is so fine fits too.

At about 3:45 when you come down to "heal" the kid with the glasses, you can see me in the gray-brown-green sweater holding up a camcorder. My very first TGWTG appearance... perhaps not my last! :D
Once again, it was absolutely fantastic hanging out with you, I had no idea that you'd actually let me go everywhere with you on Friday. You really care about your fans, and you really know how to make your fans really happy. I already had such high respect for you, but now you're probably my favorite Internet personality of all time. Most importantly, you're a good person with a good heart, and I will never forget the good times we had, even though it was only one day and a couple hours on Saturday.
I'll be uploading the footage I took with you to my YouTube account pretty soon: username there is "Lurdanjo".
Hope to see you some more in the near future!
Much like religion itself...It's a joke, lighten up francis.
How charming. Mako is off limits, and complaints of potentially racist or sexist remarks are considered acceptable criticism. But if I have an issue with this, my point is considered meaningless, and I'm supposed to sit down, shut up, and let this crap continue without voicing any disaproval?
I stil remember the atheists throwing a shit storm in the comments section of the Charity Drive over the words "God Bless You". How self-serving.
-
02.10.2010 - 00:38 | hellsfoxes
Redbob. Of course have your opinion and all... but notice the difference between legitimate criticism and gentle satire...
If your worried that all those impressionable young people there will go away thinking less of religion, then I believe you have your own hangups about religion. I'm guessing you hate South Park because they make fun of christianity. Well they actually have the same policy which is to poke gentle fun at everyone including themselves and not hold anyone to a higher standard.
You completely contradicted yourself anyway, on one hand above you say you didn't mind Mako or any of the other shit but THIS is too much, then you criticize others for being okay with racist or sexist remarks.
We're not ganging up on you, but sticking up for Doug who is a very thoughtful and considerate comedian and obviously wouldn't have anything bad to say about anyone or anything other then shitty movies!
So yeah.... lighten up and get off doug's back. He didn't cross any wrong lines...... not even close!
-
02.11.2010 - 08:40 | Juki-MissiOh,so let me get this straight you're commenting on how people were ''mean and hateful'' towards religion by being ''mean and hateful'' towards athiests?.
I know many Athiests, and all of them respect christians.
-
08.17.2011 - 14:20 | Zechs90
"I know many Athiests, and all of them respect christians."
...and I know many atheists who are absolute bigoted dicks. In fact, you can see quite a few of them in the comments here. So yeah, no one is innocent here both atheists and christians have been "mean and hateful" to each other.
So listen to the agnostic (that'd be me), and recognize that you both did wrong and that both need to calm the fuck down.
-
02.10.2010 - 23:55 | poisontongueHow hypocritical on your part!
How fitting of the self-righteous uppity religions clowns!
-
10.19.2010 - 19:07 | Lucia32
How fitting of the self-righteous uppity religions clowns!
...and how fitting of the rude, ignorant, spiteful behavior of a venomous troll, in your case.
Given your own behavior here, I find your reaction to be ironic in the extreme.
-
02.11.2010 - 09:24 | adrasl300Redbob!
Dude...Doug could probably just be making fun of high strung evangelists because...well there funny...and obnoxious.
I really dont think he is bashing religion in general.
He makes fun of Michael Jackson too but he never said he hated him.
Know what I mean?
Ahh yeah Hellsfoxes got the point.
-
10.19.2010 - 19:05 | Lucia32Red, I'm a devout Christian and I gotta tell ya..I don't see anything insulting to the faith in ANY of this (outside of some of the comments here).
Doug was taking aim at greedy fundamentalist preachers, whose loud and obnoxious behavior is a blight on Christianity.
Um is the Reverend going to be joining Chester A. Bum and Ask That Guy persona's? Because the MPD is adding up.
Did the Nostalgia Critic just fine a Smurffette Principle here?
He wasn't really there in the Santa Christ get up was he?
Nah, it was regular Rob Walker as the cameraman. You'll be able to see an alternate view of this performance on my YouTube page soon, username "Lurdanjo".
Unless, of course, Doug doesn't want me to, in that case I would respect his wishes.
I hope this isn't the only time we'll ever see Reverend Nutt Job he's awesome.
