I still adore this movie... even if it was insane.
I mean, so many things in this movie would be controversial today: the sex appeal of Goldie, the cigar smoking club owner.. you never see stuff like that anymore. ^w^

Damn! I was really looking forward to the Titanic: The Animated Movie review, but oh well! Anyways, I saw this movie in theaters, and, boy, I haven't cared much for it since.

03.17.2009 - 20:13 | Covenant
LoL. This was horrible. Thanks NC.
uh...the movie I meant. Not the video.

I LOVE Rockadoodle! I don't care what you say NC! I say "Trapped, trapped like rats!" on almost a weekly basis! And I really think this is where my love of Elvis started...
Greatest St. Paddy's day EVER! Just got home from the bars to realize the NC I had been looking forward to has been moved up! Awesome review as always Doug! I hope you're celebrating because everyone is Irish today! Now, I'm going to have another beer...

This is a great review! I know people love saying that after they first see a review but it was truely really good!
I love the strangeness of it all aswell. It was hundreds of Big-Lipped Alligator Momements all tied together with pixie dust and horse hairs. (have you noticed big lipped alligator moment turn up everywhere nowandays?)

Would I be making a rift in the space time continuum if I said that this review kick's ass and I rolled on the floor laughing, but I still think this childhood favorite of mine continues to kick ass as well?
this is one big dilemma if I've ever had one...I'm going to go pray to God that I didn't doom the universe as we know it just now.
-
11.27.2009 - 20:00 | DemiGodofDrama
Nope. The universe is idiot-proof in that regard. After all, I've caused worse paradoxes.
They totally did not involve ninja zombie robot skeleton pirate baseball playing cowboys in sombreroes dancing the tango on tyranosaurs in space ships. Yeah, i'm insane.

No comment about one of the most blatant goofs in all of respectable-budget animated features right after Chanticleer steals the motorcycle?
I'm also a little disappointed that you didn't mention how Phil Harris starts narrating over the opening musical number.

I don't know, I have mixed feelings about this. Yes I agree the movie deserves this treatment, but I feel bad since I did rather like it at the time. I remember actually having a fun dream related to it when I was eight or so.
Anyway, good review, moderately bad movie, fun times had by all.

-
03.17.2009 - 20:03 | MissPrettyKitty - Great Review!
From the time you said to go with the 'charactors death' part, to the 'Big Lipped Alligator Moment', I was laughing so hard I was coughing! Too damn good critic!

As soon as I saw the toads I thought, "Are those the Battletoads?" Then the NC acknowledges the fact. Yay.
I've never seen this movie, and when I first heard of it, all I could think was, "WTF?"
I also liked the mad libs, and as soon as the "flashing before your eyes" moments popped up, I knew it was a B.L.A.M.

*starts the slow clap*
...wait. I LIKED THIS MOVIE!!!...I need help. :s

03.17.2009 - 20:09 | Lord Seth
Was the real-life kid even necessary for the movie? It seems to me that he could have just been cut out with only minor rewriting. The movie would've still been stupid, but I don't think it would've been as stupid.
-
03.17.2009 - 20:10 | rabbitinred - AWESOME!
even as a child i hated this pile of shit. lemme just say the sound of music voice over had me rollin.
-
03.17.2009 - 20:11 | whitexalbum
I've always wanted to see this movie as a kid, but my older brother wouldn't let me, saying it was terrible.
How right he was.

very good review....i remember loving this movie when i was like five or six and was a little disappointed to see you would rip it a new one...but yeah, looking back this movie was not the masterpiece my fragile little mind (during adolescence) had made it out to be...if i still have the vhs i should watch it again just so i can make a good evaluation of it now rather than rely on the NC...even though that is always a good strategy.
but, this movie is definitely better than "miss march"

03.17.2009 - 20:12 | Erinaceus - This Movie _____ (verb) My Childhood...
What the hell did Chanticleer turn into towards the end to make the Sun rise? Some bizarro Cock Rocket?
It's like Don Bluth one day woke up and had a misguided epiphany where he thought his Big-Lipped Aligator Moments were the reason his career was such a success... and so he went off to make a film dedicated solely to non-sequitur songs and a clash of live action and animation. Bizarre. Bizarre and, with regards to the rest of his career, tragic.
-
03.19.2009 - 03:40 | MysticStudiosProductions
Don Bluth is really an awful filmmaker. He copies every lazy element of the tired "Disney formula" and applies it to slightly darker versions of very, very conventional storylines.
People knew that the Disney Studio formula wasn't working. And many animators were trying challenge Disney Studios, challenging the idea that everything has to be made within that formula even if you are not a part of that studio...some directors even challenged the idea that animation was a medium for children by making animated films aimed at adults.
Bluth started out with a couple of good movies - "The Secret of N.I.M.H." and "An American Tail" weren't formulaic. Then he started adding songs to his films. I think we've made about one too many animated kids' films where they get up and sing every five minutes - that's not real life.
On "All Dogs Go to Heaven", He gave up and started putting every bad idea on film, including the entire storyline of "All Dogs". Bluth's output is far too conventional. It made no difference that he was outside of Disney. When you head your own studio, you're supposed to come up with your own ideas and challenge conventions, not repeat yourself and repeat ideas that others had. You don't LEAVE DISNEY to DO DISNEY.
Art is about challenging conventions and coming up with new ideas. If you're not doing anything new, there's no point.

03.17.2009 - 20:13 | rageofkyubii - Huh.....
Sadly, I do remember this movie as being one of my favorites as a kid. Well this, and Cat's Don't Dance(which, by the way, I'd love to see you review). Seeing this now, I'm starting to wonder if I just liked Mindfuck Movies as a kid. Admittedly, this movie is so much bad as it is weird. I do remember feling cheated on the whole "dream" twist. hll, the movie probabbly would have been somewhat better if they skipped the live action parts altogether. Not a lot better, but you get the idea.
I honesty cannot believe I forgot about that kid's voice. Seriously, he sounds twice as young as he actually is! I remember rewatching this a few times just so I could try and understand just what the hell he was saying falf the time. Just ho many speech impediments can one kid have anyways? And if he 'died' in his dream or whatever, shouldn't he have died in real life? And how the heck did he know what happened after he "died"? Isn't that the part in dreams where people normally wake up? Gah, too much weirdness...I've got one hell of a headache trying to understand all this stuff.
Why must ever animated movie be a musical? Is it some kind of unwritten rule of crap?
-
03.18.2009 - 02:34 | Bonkers
Well, I think not every animated movie must be a musical. I mean, where the hell did they sing in American Tail or Secret of Nimh?
But the songs in this movie... they were really crappy. I mean even the villain songs sound stupid and that is NEVER a good sign.
every song in an animated movie can be crap, but n0ormally the villain songs are always the most superbest songs. Well but here....But "Cat`s dont dance" as a next review?
...
to be honest, I didn`t think it was a great movie for it`s time, but as a video movie I really appreciated it.
So bad aren`t the cartoon animals in this movie that NC should comment them. And honestly, after garbage Pail Kids, even Howard the Duck now looks like a masterpiece of cimeatic art.

07.14.2009 - 09:33 | NOTYETUSEDNAME
Are you kidding, Bonkers? An American Tail not only had several songs in it-it has several really good songs in it. Somewhere out there(oscar nominated), We're a duo, and Never say never, were songs that were relevant to the scenes they were in and advanced the story marvelously. Sadly, this was the only Don Bluth movie that used songs well. Anastasia almost did, but ultimately failed. I haven't seen a Don Bluth movie since the abysmal Titan AE. I miss his greatness.

Wait, cats don't dance? How about the abomination unto every lord (or lordess? lordy?) that has ever been believed to exist that is The Secret of NIMH 2: Timothy to the rescue. Dear Flying Spagheti Monster, Secret of NIMH 2... (elipsies) Cats don't dance was okay, not a great film, but certainly not deserving of Dougs wrath. NIMH 2? HELLS no. It sucks. The music was terrible, the acting poor, and plot even worse.

03.17.2009 - 20:13 | Shinigami
Oh my what a horrible semi-animated movie that was. I'm just happy to let you to do all remembering for me.
-
03.17.2009 - 20:14 | DanManX
I remember seeing this in theatres as a kid. I DON'T remember much other than Chanticleer (didn't remember his name) crowing to bring up the sun, the sun coming up without him one day, and then...I must've stopped paying attention. And I had HORRIBLE taste as a kid. So even though I don't look back on this movie with disdain, I did apparently realize it was bad.
-
03.17.2009 - 20:15 | ShadyIMG - Another movie I saw as a kid...
Yep. As a kid I didn't really care about the nonsense cause, well, I was kid. Good job review it. ^^

I used to like this film allot but now as you mention this. Its ok now I guess.

-

But I like this movie!
anyways, I laughed pretty hard at the big lipped alligator moment.

-
03.17.2009 - 20:18 | LUrabbi
This is a movie where individual parts are ok, even cool, but taken as a whole, it's an annoying mess. I have to say that I do believe you glossed over the best character, the claustrophobic stork. Or whatever he was.
Anyway, great review as always. I liked your Sound of Music dub with the throwback to Good Burger. And congratulations to Marobot for providing the fantastic artwork!
