Cool! I always liked the trailer to The faces of dr Lao because it is a more old fashioned trailer you don't see anymore
  • kroneofthorns  - I LOVE THAT YO LOVE LAO!!!
7 Faces of Dr. Lao is fantastic!

Why do you think we care what a site called WatchMojo does? I was more interested in what YOUR movie trailer picks were. It's not like only one person is allowed to have their list.

I once subscribed to the watchmojo youtube channel. I unsubscribed a few days later when I realised they were just uploading hastily put together top 10s without any real thinking behind them.
  • the gangsta of love
watchmojo doesn't really have much thinking behind them. They search all over the internet in forums, message boards, and other top ten lists and puts their lists together based on their research. to put it simply their like a marketing agency who puts ideas together based off of research of "what the kids are into these days"
  • 80sQueen
They have a website where people vote on what should be in their videos, actually. I don't know about you, but I love that kind of democracy.
  • Mattbrain
They did a list of Top 10 Animated Shows from the 90s….and Animaniacs didn't even make the list!

You have to remember this video is also going up on Youtube and Youtube has a...fetish about saying" YOU COPIED so and so,HE DID IT FIRST STOP COPYING"
This is mostly on LP videos but i suspect that it would happen on NC´s video too
  • BB Shockwave
    avatar
Yep! Besides, this is the internet, everything you do has been done before by someone else, elsewhere, years or days before. :) Who cares? There are no laws about this.
  • nostalgic90skid  - I fucking love POTC so I'm incredibly biased, but.
    avatar
So happy to see the POTC3 trailer on this.

I actually did this crappy remake of it back then. Good times.

Also, TDKR certainly has a well-deserved place on this list, I really liked the movie and I've never really seen Bane as her bitch. Each to their own ofcourse.

Psycho has been on my to-watch list for the longest time. I'm certain I will do that ASAP now.

Can't get enough of those movie trailers. BTW, I've also seen that WatchMojo video, but I'm still watching this list, because A. it's a Nostalgia Critic list, and B. it's a top ELEVEN list, not top TEN.

    11. I was really glued to this trailer whether I was watching it on the theatre or online, and reguardles to what anyone else may say, I really enjoyed this Pirates film.
    10. I haven's seen either A Serious Man or Little Children, but I'm kinda interested in the latter.
    9. I didn't see the Jurassic Park trailer in theatres, but I did however saw the Godzilla ('98) trailer, and like an 11 year old idiot who didn't know better, I was suckered in.
    8. I don't remember seeing any of the advertising of the first film, but I've seen A trailer for The Spy Who Shagged Me when I saw Star Wars Episode I in theatres.
    7. I was also suckered into seeing Burton's Planet of the Apes because of the advertising, and when I saw it, it reminded me of a different take on Battlefield fuckin' Earth, and this film came out the summer after that.
    6. I love The Dark Knight Rises trailer, and I love the film itself as a grand conclusion of The Dark Knight Trilogy.
    5. I didn't see this Spider-Man trailer until 2006 when YouTube was becoming more popular.
    4. I remember first seeing the trailer for ID4 during the reviews of a VHS my mom rented, and My eye's bulgged from start to finish. It wasn't until Christmas 1996 when I first saw the film on VHS, and it was worth the wait, and I watch it every July 4th since.
    3. I first saw the Alien trailer during the previews of the 20th anniversary VHS of the movie, and it got me pumped for seeing that film for my first time.
    2. I don't remember seeing a trailer or a TV spot of Titanic when it was being released, but i do remember seeing the poster at my local theatre. I later saw a behind the scenes documentary on Fox TV, and it wasn't until May of 1998 when I saws in on the big screen, and it became the first movie in the theatre that made me cry.
    1. That's the power of Alfred Hitchcock from his day. I first saw Psycho from start to finish in my American Film class in college, and the movie is so good, I later bought the Universal Legacy Series Special Edition DVD to put in my movie collection, and I watch it every October during my month long horror movie marathon leading up to Halloween.

Movie trailers are the best. I love them. Sometimes they're even better than the movies. Even if the movie sucks the trailer is usually worth seeing.

I remember seeing the trailer for the movie Skyline, and it actually got my to see it in the theatre. When I went to see the actual movie, it turned out to be a big waste of my time, and it is by far the only movie I regret seeing on the big screen.
  • weldo8
If you're gonna see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. But if you're gonna see two movies, see... Austin Powers. That line killed me.
  • Malidictus
Err... Actually, I didn't see Titanic because the trailer made it look like absolute garbage. Overblown visuals, unnecessary angsty drama and lots of drawn-out pandering, all to hide the fact that the movie's basic premise - the sinking of the Titanic - has very little to say beyond the various documentaries we've all already seen on the subject.

Maybe the movie really is good. I don't know - I still haven't seen it. Never found a compelling reason to do so.
  • FireFlyan  - Re: Malidictus

I actually urge you to see it, at least once. Even if you don't like the main characters, it is a monumental film that gets you involved in the lives of even the most minor characters. The fact that you know what is going to happen in the end, makes it a little heart-wrenching.
  • ThatGuywiththeHasjiesj

I really like your number one.

I was familiar with 'psycho', but this is the first time I was made aware of the trailer of that movie. The trailer of Hitchcock is a peace of work at it self. Indeed brilliant and certainly if you take in account that this was produced 54 years ago.

I would really like to see to see someone do that with a modern approach nowadays. Try in that fashion to explain what happens in 'guardians of the galaxy'.
Then you know for sure those Marvel-exploitation movies are made by individuals who are taking at least 3 different kind of illegal substances.
  • Hardback247
I'm still waiting for you to actually review Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes.
  • Shawdawg
When I saw the trailer, I thought "Next Review."
  • Film Runner

Funnily enough the film Spider-Man was re-edited following 9/11 (according to America, Right or Wrong by Anatol Lieven), so that trailer footage was most likely in the film originally.
  • MyNameIsMatthew0
Now he should do "Top 11 Worst Trailers," even though watchmojo.com already did "Top 10 Trailers That Ruined the Movie".

What about Man of Steel. That trailer was amazing! Sadly, I can't say the same for the movie itself.
  • McVirus
exactly opposite feelings here... the trailer kind of sucked, but the film was awesome!
  • MikamiFan92

I understand that the movie industry is a very different place nowadays, with some decisions made better than others but one thing that we're in a short supply of is subtlety in trailers.

The way I see it, the more subtle, vague and intriguing the trailer is, the more interesting the movie will be but most importantly, it keeps expectations at a safe level.

I guess what I'm saying is, I understand Doug's no.1 trailer choice, it just ticks all the right boxes and wasn't scared to try something new.
  • Dearslay

    Very good list! Personal ones I would have included would be;

Watchmen (Smashing Pumpkins - The beginning is the end is the beginning)

Terminator Salvation... what an awful film but the trailer with 'Nine Inch Nails - The day the world went away' was so awesome!
  • Megalodon

    Totally second the Watchmen trailer!
  • Film Runner
    avatar
Watchmen's trailer is only good if you're already a fan of the comic. It relies entirely on imagery only known to those fans without ever explaining who the people it's showing are or why you should care. This approach to marketing was probably what sank the film at the box-office, to be honest.

We miss you Alfred. We miss you.
  • Torque
Bane is no ones bitch. If you watch TDKR you will see that Talia played her role in setting up the nuke and helping keep Bane informed of what the other side was doing. Not one scene of her commanding him or demanding him to do anything. They loved each other and were partners to the end. And I love Christan Bales voice.
  • SimplyJay
Thank you! It annoys me when people get down on TDKR when it seems undeserved. Every "plot hole" I've heard with the movie I've been able to disprove with an explanation that only requires common sense or a re-watch. The performances were great all around; the hand-to-hand fighting was probably the best we've seen from the franchise; Bruce used the silly voice much less often; everybody got a chance to shine; Bane was legitimately threatening; etc. While I knew nothing was gonna top Heath Ledger's Joker, this final installment was a very fitting send off and a damn good film on its own merits.
  • Shawdawg
If only Bane didn't look like a crab, and didn't sound like Sean Connery.
  • DeTroutSpinners

Whenever someone says "it's explained if you just think about it," they're basically admitting it's NOT explained. If it requires conjecture, it's a plot hole. Now, if there's actual subtle hints or a line of dialogue here or there that explains it, then it is explained but not very well (e.g. 'Rosebud' - technically it IS explained later in the film how his words were heard despite seemingly being alone on his deathbed but it's totally glanced over and it should have been shown on screen). Doug brought up how infuriating the "you're just too stupid to understand" defence mechanism is a few videos back, and he's right. An audience for the most part doesn't have to be force-fed every detail of a story, but key plot elements that don't add up or need 'common sense' to work out ARE PLOT HOLES.
  • Aray 1
Very good episode like usual! I like how you more go into the psychology of what makes a trailer good. Excellent!
  • Megalodon

Huh. Never seen Psycho. Or Jurassic Park all the way through. Or either of #10. Or the 1999 Godzilla. Certainly never seen Austin Powers. I remember more of Independence Day from seeing clips in reviews of it than I do the movie itself, if I ever saw it. Never seen that Spider-man trailer either, though I've heard of it many times.

One of the best trailers I can recall off the top of my head that isn't from the last year was for 9, the Burton-styled CG movie with the little burlap sack people, with the Coheed & Cambria song. How disappointed was I that there was no heavy metal anywhere in the actual movie? But man, that whole trailer had the perfect mood and the perfect pacing.

What really drew me to see "TDKR" was to find out what the hell was the deal with the chanting. Of course, we all know what they're saying: Dishy! DISHY! Pasta bra! PASTA BRA!

I was curious if you were going to bring up that they brought back the 'siren' noise from the Alien trailer for when Prometheus came out.
  • it_is_ned
I really appreciate your use of LotR while talking about how Psycho's trailer shouldn't work as it breaks all the conventional rules, as LotR doesn't really work as a conventional book. Tolkien's characters talk about *their* mythos, which the audience knows nothing about (particularly as The Silmarilion was published two decades later). I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I enjoyed it greatly all the same.

... you recommend us to go check out WatchMojo? The Youtube channel constantly getting info and facts and statements wrong?! What, do you work for them or something?
  • DeTroutSpinners

I think he's just being diplomatic. He doesn't want to be seen as derivative of them, which wouldn't happen anyway as his list is much more in-depth and he's probably been compiling it since before WatchMojo's list was published.
  • SimplyJay
Great list, Doug! Those trailers were sweet!
I've seen most of the movies featured on this list and I think the only I would classify as being "bad" would be Burton's Planet of the Apes, even though I did like certain things about it.
I love PotC 3, I love The Dark Knight Rises (though I still think second one is better), and I love Alien! I've only seen pieces of Independence Day, but I liked it. I like Titanic, as well. Haven't seen any of the Austin Powers movies, but that trailer had a great punchline, and I love the fact that, given the choice between them, it actually encouraged audiences to see Star Wars. Overall, nice work.

No Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ?

Not even as honorable mention ?

Geez, you're missing out the best of the movie
  • Blaze The Movie Fan
I do enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End as guilty pleasure.

I know you hated Independence Day, but at least you like the trailer.

    Great list as usual.

as much as I know the White House in Independence Day was not computer generated it was a model also the explosion for the most part that's why it looks so good....kinda like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park
