Yeah, the beginning was really cool. I'm the opposite though. I have enjoyed the skits with the Demo Reel cast. I found most of them to be pretty funny. I will say that this one while really funny, I felt dragged on a bit. But I do think it's build up to the Critic finding the movie was hilarious.
Now on to the movie. Yeah, it is really terrifying. I remember seeing trailers for this when it was coming out and I knew it would suck. So I never saw in theaters. I think one day I rented the DVD or saw it on T.V. It's not good at all. I will admit, the animation in the thought bubbles was really good though. And the idea of having a cartoon where a baby and a dog compete for the dad's attention, is a nice idea. If it is actually made when I have a child, I'd watch it with my kid. It reminds me a lot of Tom and Jerry.
But yeah, this movie is not only terrifying, it seems like they blew the budget on just the CG and 2D animation. Just look at Jamie Kennedy's hair when he's wearing the mask. It looks like what it is, plastic. Couldn't they have made the hair look more real? Not a plastic wig that doesn't actually have any hair follicles? It just looks awful. On top of that, why didn't the director tell Jamie to act better while wearing the mask? Every time I see him wearing the damn thing, he has the, "I hate my job. Why am I here?" expression on his face. Did the director just think, "That's good enough for a kids movie."? Further more, I think Jamie just looks creepy with that mask on. Just... no!
Overall, this movie sucks. The CG isn't great, the acting isn't great, the makeup isn't great, and it's just terrifying as hell. The only redeeming things it has is that awesome rocket car at the end, the 2D animation in the thought bubbles, and a good idea for a cartoon. But that just isn't enough to save this movie.
Oh, and I also thought of the Schwarzenegger baby from Junior when I saw Alan Cumming's face on the baby in this movie. Just... *shivers*.
Anyway, nice review Doug. Can't wait to see what you have next. :)

03.05.2013 - 21:02 | FloweramonPlease don't put in 'we.' While I do come for NC, I love the skits and the actors playing in them, so I find them to be a wonderful part of the videos. It's okay to have your own opinion, but don't presume to speak for everyone.

03.06.2013 - 10:37 | jz1337Yeah but it's just they drag on for so long. They just need to time them out better.

Precisely. I agree with Flowermon that while YOU, Amykins, might not find the skits funny and don't care about the two people from Demo Reel, other people might not share that same opinion so you sound ignorant when you use the all encompassing word, "we". I very much enjoy the skits and find them to be hilarious and a definite positive change from how the Nostalgia Critic episodes used to be.

This particular video had the shortest spurts of skits yet.
It's not any different than the skit's he's done before the Demo Reel, there's even a few in previous videos that last a comparable or longer amount of time.
I'm NOT telling you your opinion is stupid and invalid but I have to disagree, the skits are funny, they're not painful or awkward and they're shown in quick amounts and wrapped up at the end of the review in one final longer spurt.
I assure you I'm no fan boy either but I don't see how they're different from his previous skits in his older videos either. Did you forget the one where he's sent to purgatory in one of his videos? That skit lasted for a while. Assuming you're perfectly unbiased then you would hate that one too seeing as it's highly similar to this.
Either that or you just really hate the demo reel people which seems to be the case here.

03.06.2013 - 06:29 | MalidictusYes, indeed. Please stop referring to yourself like a monarch. "We" come to see a good show, be it Doug Walker or the others, and the others were AMAZING in this. I fully believe that the new incarnation of the Nostalgia Critic is superior to his old because he has so much more material with others to play off of. Especially when the others deliver such good performances.
Seriously, Satan was awesome!

"We come to see NC, not these strange people we don't know and don't really care about. These skits just go on forever, it's not funny, it's painful and awkward to watch."
Who is "we"? There's always been sketches, and they are in most shows like this. If you don't find them funny, then stop watching. I enjoy them, and most of this was gold. I found this one to be awkward though because they used that woman twice rather than 2 different ones like they should have.
-
03.06.2013 - 12:14 | KriosisYup, I skipped all of them and have been every review. They're far from funny. And it comes off as "just giving my friends something to do". Oh well, other than that it was a solid review.

Omg, SHUT THE H*LL UP! First of, there's no 'WE' here just 'YOU' and secondly, this whinning and negativism is getting old real fast, and not just from you but from all the naysayers. A few videos ago, it was people crying about the white wall for God's sake! You're getting free entertainment put out by people who do it for the sheer fun of it and see little incomes from it, the least anyone could do is enjoy what you are getting even if it's not to your perfect liking. I have my own complaints or preferences about the show, but you don't see me cry about it after every single video. We, the free entertainment viewers, are not entitled to anything special. The producers can do whatever they what, wherever or whenever they want - as they should.
-
03.06.2013 - 12:40 | JendrexylI agree the skits are too long and not that funny but its nice to see reviews again
-
03.06.2013 - 18:08 | Sakuradrops
The skits are funny and the people doing them aren't bad at what they do at all. They aren't pointless little cutscenes just to waste 10 minutes of the video, they usually build up o something and is concluded by the end of the video. Also there is no "We" just You. The people who complain so much about these skits are probably the same people that couldn't stop bitching about all the crossover reviews. Just get over it!

...agree with Amykins. Im very glad that NC is back but this new format doesn`t really work in my opinion. Just like in the Pearl Harbor Review - you could cut every "DemoReelSurvival-Skit" out and it would work just fine, for the most that extra stuff is just not funny. There is way too much of this, hell the review doesnt even start till the fourth minute... it feels weird, doesn`t match up with the traditional parts of the Review and it doesn`t ad anything to the format. I think its not a good new edition to a style of video-reviewing that worked just great in the past, if it aint break don`t fix it. Doug your review was very good - but the rest of the video... meh.

I have to agree with the other people pointing out that "we" is very presumptuous. I like the new skits and I come to see reviews and to laugh. Well, I just saw a review and I laughed.
Alas, people will always find something to complain about. Always. By all means, if you can do it better, please do.

-
03.06.2013 - 10:51 | IanFischI think NC has to ask himself:
"Are these skits as funny as Two and a Half Men"?
Because there are literally hundreds of Two and Half Men episodes that I could watch online right now but choose not to.
Same goes for all of the other lame sitcoms out there.
I would say that if they're not even as funny as these, he should just stop doing them and give us what we came for.

what? who is we? I don't understand this expectation which people have that Doug has to make something JUST for you. This is HIS show. If you don't like it...you can always take option #2. Since lots of people enjoy the skits they aren't going to stop.
There are some aspects I don't enjoy. Some of the references...lets just say some of us don't care for "My little pony." Blatantly ripping off LOTR was a little on the line of going into TBF territory. I suspect that over time they will get better. This is only the second NC we have seen so far? God people. Give the man a break.
As for the movie. I recall I saw this with my son (who was like 5 or 6 at the time). It was freaky but he liked it. Kids like shit that pops and is colorful. Its not fun for adults to watch though. I remember the parents in the audience all collectively heaving one big sigh about 10 minutes in. lol. The movie came out in the mid 00' so if you saw this during your "childhood" ...I feel so old.

-
03.08.2013 - 11:24 | Alllu-ManWell the thing about the Demo reel cast sequences kinda ties to my main problem with NC. He can right good one off jokes & commentary but he's pretty weak when reying to blend comedy with a cohesive narrative. It doesn't work together well and comes off as forced. He's a better stand up comedian than a sitcom writer.
I still do like that the Demo reel cast is being worked in cause the actors themselves aren't half bad and NC might as well use all the manpower he's got.
-

-
03.05.2013 - 17:10 | EviscosYou know, I actually liked Speed Racer. Granted, it did do a lot of things wrong, but it did feel a lot like the original series to me. The races were good, the goofiness from the original series was amped up, and Spritle and Chim-Chim were handled about as well as they were in the original series. The climax was actually pretty exciting too. I really don't see why there's all the hate for it. I, at least, feel that it was a good remake of the original show. The only glaring issue I have with it, though, is Spritle and Chim-Chim taking away from the story so much. However, that's actually not too different from the show.

@MrKingOfWin: LOL, NC should totally have used that description in the review!
Yeesh, creepy mutated Honey Nut Cheerios bee, terrible dad almost feeding his kid broken glass, terrible dad banging his wife's head against the floor (oh wait, but it was cuz he thought she was Loki, so it's supposed to be hilaaarious)...
Y'know…FOR KIDS!!! :-D
P.S. I don't know what it is about it, but Critic's terrified scream at the creepy weird animation is hilarious.
P.S.2 Is Santa Christ's staff a toy light-saber shaft with a plastic diamond attached to it? :-D

Loved the plot setup, it was nice to see than them be parallel cutaways. Rachel's a very adorable little girl. I wonder how much stronger the racism would be when word gets out the Devil is black. Now, did you learn the MLP theme or did Rachel alone? Because that was a HILARIOUS entrance. And ohai CR! Nice to see you in a regular NC ep! And you admitted Zach Braff is funny... YAY! Linkara would be proud. I think the part about the dog wanting to kill the baby is that The Mask would amplify and exaggerate whatever sentiments you have about something, even if it's not a sentiment you dont feel strongly. And the death would be cartoony anyway, just like the baby's movements, abilities, and the dog's face.
... HOLY SH*** ROB! SANTA CHRIST! WHEEE!
And I hope you realize that despite your hatred of Twitter, most of TGWTG, BT, and former members all have accounts, including Malcolm and Rachel. And it's not evil! Appreciate the benevolence towards Pokemon though!
"Anyway, they tried that before... didnt go over very well!" XD
-
03.05.2013 - 16:47 | ladydiskette
-
03.05.2013 - 20:07 | CD531Actually I believe the way the mask worked is that it brought out and amplified the inner part of yourself. For example, on the inside Stanley was a romantic, and wanted to be this cool, suave person, and loved Tex Avery. So that was the mask. And when the bad guy wore the mask, it brought out his inner psycho. And the mask by default gives the power to warp reality, leading to their strange powers, with Stanley's more on the cartoon side.
So if the dog put on the mask, and it was envious of the kid, the mask would bring out that dark side.
As for the kid's powers, I look at it like this: with the mask on, it's power runs through the whole body. So some residual magic went into the kid.
But geez this movie is disturbing. And terrible. And how on earth did they get Traylor Howard? Thank goodness she went on to great parts like Natalie Teeger in Monk.
And here's a question. How is Loki walking around? I thought the deal with the mask was that he was banished from Valhalla via being sealed INSIDE it.
-

I just came back from the forum section for this review and some of the people there have brought up something I am glad Critic never EVER mentioned in this review.
The Mask-faced sperms when they were making a baby, just...dear god. *shudder*

03.05.2013 - 16:01 | Captain SiberiaThe set up bit wasn't funny. Sorry. Kim Kardashian? Too obvious. Having everything be evil and then having someone sing a happy children's song? Been done too many time before. Calling this children's movie the most evil thing of all? Come on, man, you can do better than that.
Also, some parts of this video, but not others, looked choppy on my computer. Don't know why.
Frankie Valli is rolling in his grave, AND HE'S STILL ALIVE!!!
The Mask was a good cartoon. Until CBS cancelled it for THE FUCKING NEWS!
That scream will be one of your career-defining moments! Loved it!
Great use of CR!
Broken lightbulb! Holy fuck!
Also, babies aren't funny. Ever.
Twitter! Because, pop culture! Relevant! People have heard of it, and many don't like it!
Lord of the Rings stuff! Because many people have seen it, and will therefore automatically think it's funny if we reference it! Careful, or you'll turn into a Friedberg or Seltzer before you know it. Hey, why don't we just put the "Leave Britney Alone" video onto some random thing and make a joke that it's scary? Because we make clever observations that way!
My Little Pony! Because many adults find it innocuous! Because comedy is easy! You don't need to have anything clever to say! Just say the same things as everybody else! Come on, man! You should know better, especially after /To Boldly Flee/!
I have to tell you, the videos are starting to feel bloated. Too much of the side stuff. There can be side stuff, but the actual review is the meat of the video. The side stuff shouldn't keep us away from the meat for extended stretches.

03.05.2013 - 22:25 | MidesPeople disliked Season 3 for quite a few reasons. The biggest ones were:
- It was half the usual length, and had a greater quantity of mediocre episodes than either seasons 1 or 2.
- It included an episode where Discord (Q from Star Trek, as a chimera), who was previously established to be a total sociopath, was redeemed by forming a friendship with one of the ponies, with almost no build-up to the change of heart.
- It wrapped up with the main character ascending to, more-or-less, godhood.
-
03.05.2013 - 23:15 | BronyChaosAw man, I was gonna explain it... :(
-
03.05.2013 - 23:46 | ColeYote
-
03.06.2013 - 03:13 | aibrDon't worry about this "It wrapped up with the main character ascending to, more-or-less, godhood" thing. It's just some fanon headcanon that she's now god. There's absolutely no reason to assume anything like that giving what we have seen in the show.
-
03.07.2013 - 20:11 | TheRealSolitairYeah, I'm still waiting for the next season premiere to explore the implications of this transformation, but if I had to guess I'd say it'll ultimately end up with little more than a cosmetic change. Twilight will still be the same pony, but with wings and a few inches taller.
-
03.15.2013 - 21:23 | RustyTim
It's a bad situation either way, because either the character people liked is being altered in a big way, or she is being altered in a way that is completely superficial and the change was ultimately for nothing.
As much as I like the show, I do worry that its best days are behind it. Aside from a few episodes that I enjoyed, I can't deny being disappointed by season 3, and with Twilight's character being transformed I can't really see season 4 being any better-- if not even worse.
-
03.06.2013 - 02:50 | aibrAnd that joke didn't worked, because many consider Season 3 as a best season. Equestria Daily had poll, where Season 2 won, Season 3 was second and Season 1 kept the last place on voters favorite season. I think Season 3 is best season.
-
03.15.2013 - 21:25 | RustyTim
-
- It was half a length so it could meet the 65 episode norm needed for syndication.
- That was the bad if not the worst idea in the show. I still hold the opinion that he should be dumped in a lava pit (or, even better a black hole, just to be sure) while he was still in stone.
- That was meant to be a series finale (which was hinted all the way from the S1 pilot episode) but since MLP has become a new cash cow, Hasbro is going to continue to squeeze every $ from it.
P.S. The Alicorn = Deity thing is still ambiguous and it was never really explained how it functions (c'mon Hasbro, it's not exactly a classified data).
-
03.07.2013 - 20:18 | TheRealSolitairYeah, that seems to be the main problem here: not enough time. We have a relative drought of episodes this time around, and the most momentous events of the season, the ones mentioned above, were only given a single episode each to play out. I don't know if the episodes could have been better without being expanded into two-parters, but I kind of wish I could see the results of giving them more time.
Still, this season wasn't all bad. I really liked episodes 4-8. So calling it shitty is a bit harsh in my mind.
-
03.14.2013 - 21:44 | psycher7Yeah, I thought 3 was much stronger than 1. For one thing, the CMC episodes were all solid; first year the only good one was Cutie Mark Chronicles, oddly the BEST CMC, because it kept focus on the Mane 6 where it belongs.
