I've mentioned this before I think but Angela Anaconda started out as a one-off bit on Nickelodeon's KaBlam. (Well technically two-off) And they must've realized it was shit back then because they were smart enough to drop it from the show. Whatever gave FOX the bright idea to pick it up for FOX Family, I have no clue.
What's even more insulting about the bit that precedes the movie is it doesn't even imitate Digimon that well. The whole sequence plays out more like Power Rangers than Digimon. Proving the writers of that show can't even do the other shows on FoxKids at the time properly.

Same director.

Great commentary guys. Can't wait to see more of your work JesuOtaku.
That said, I loved the movie as a kid but hey I was innocent back then and I had an interesting colour palate too. I can watch this again and say "ah the memories" but when I look at it in depth, it's a massive flop and marketing scheme (but not a massive flop at a marketing scheme).
I would also like to see another team up in the future. Hey Jesu, could you consider talking with Maven of the Eventide for a the possibility of a review of Hellsing Ultimate when it's finished being dubbed?

Nice of you guys to put in a commentary for this review since this review is one of my personal favorites. I nearly forgot JO was at a con at the time and was staying at a friend's house with all the cool One Pieces figures and Japanese anime videos, so they weren't actually hers. I feel a bit relieved actually! ^_^ '
I didn't watch the Digimon movie till after I was halfway through 02 (around 2001) and I only enjoyed the actions scenes and thought the Angela Anaconda short was ridiculously out of place. It still cracks me up hearing Doug's reaction to seeing the series short! XD
Summer Wars was brought up again and Doug you should check it out whether you like it or not, you still got to admire the visuals that went into it.

it's a good thing you don't watch Adventure Time Doug, you'd probably lose all faith in the future of humanity if you did. God that is such a retarded show...imagine if Jar Jar Binks, that Troll from "A Troll in Central Park", and Garbage Pail kids all had a crack Baby and then that crack baby took some shrooms and made a TV show. that's pretty much Adventure Time.

I remember watching this movie on TV a couple years after I watched the series. I think they cut out the Angela Anaconda part because I don't remember that. Probably something to do with copyright of the show, as it was broadcast on Teletoon where I live and Digimon was broadcast on YTV. (They're Canadian channels, for people who don't know). However, I do remember that episode of Angela Anaconda and I remember the main character of the movie they were going to see looking like Tai (and also Angela in her 'hero' form). Now I know why. I actually liked Angela Anaconda when I was 10, 11. I guess maybe I was the only one because the show only lasted 2 seasons. Pokemon and Digimon are actually the shows that got me into anime.
I was actually hoping someone, probably JesuOtaku would point out the scene from the second(?) movie where Matt and T.K. are running to try and find a ride to get to a computer and Matt's arms are swinging funny. I still remember that, even though I haven't seen the movie for like a decade. I just thought it was a funny scene and could have been laughed at.
I liked the film when I saw it, though that may be because I was a big fan of the series when I saw it. It may be different now. Sometimes you like something better when you're a fan. (Which some people use an excuse for this sites anniversary movies. Not insinuating anything. Just pointing that out).
This is probably the longest post I've made on this site as of now. I know it seems better suited for the actual review than the commentary, but I'm pretty sure that by now there's like a million pages for the comments section in that one, since this seemed to be Doug's most requested thing.

I recently finished all the seasons in japanese. And had watched the "Our War Game" movie in japanese. And I have to say: this dubbed film absolutely sucked. I prefer the subs to the dubbed show in general, because there are no puns (or not as many). But after seeing the review, I realize how badly 4kids messed up THREE WHOLE FILMS! Honestly, who thought taking a film chronologicly before season one, a flim taking place 6 months after season one, and a film taking AT LEAST 3 years after season 1 and in season 2?! As a small side note, off topic, I can't wait for the next part in JO's digimon retrospective.

Dudeman, I saw that coming from Digimon Adventure. 01!
Mostly because Matt was in the dark blob of depression and then Sora was in the dark blob of depression. And some plot point I don't remember at all because it's been a very long time...
Not that it made sense, but it did connect them.
It doesn't matter, though.

I was also way past the demographic for Digimon by the time it came out so I never really got into it, I thought those game/toy related animes were kind of dumb - Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, this, I think there was another one with like...spinning tops or something? I mean I did try to watch episodes of a few of these shows but I'd just be bored, mostly. I did like the theme song for this though (the, uh, show, not the movie.) So I'm totally in your shoes here Doug, I don't know what its about and I'm guessing after watching the movie I still wouldn't know. Great hilarious review though.

Loved this review, the opening bit had me in stitches.
Actually, I had not noticed the guy in the reflection or the lawnmower noise at all, despite watching this a couple times. Now that you've mentioned it though, I can't NOT notice it!
Anyway, I actually ended up seeing this movie in the theater. Yeah. It was the suck.

Wait, What!?O_o Digimon came first, did I hear that right in 9:30?? But I thought that Pokemon came first and not Digimon, you know because of the show came first at least over here? I mean don't get me wrong I still love both franchises not mater what, but it's just just one of those things that you have to know otherwise it will keep gnawing at ya. Will someone please explain and show me proof?

10.17.2012 - 22:32 | DacilrielI loved watching Digimon as a kid. Then I was excited to watch the movie and I was like, "whaaaaat?" It makes NO SENSE! There's no continuity! Why would you sacrifice two Mega level digimon in exchange for two champion level?
And JO, you were absolutely right, TK and Kari were supposed to grow up and fall in love and have perfect little babies. That whole 02 finale was horrible.
I never noticed the ghost reflection until you mentioned it now!

10.18.2012 - 05:11 | JiCiWhat we need to remember is that the English version of the movie was actually short versions of 3 movies blend together. If you watch the subs for each movie, it makes a lot more sense than the english movie.
Then again, the 3 movies itself have their flaws, like the animation which is inferior to the TV series. I mean, come on, the Pokémon movies look closer to their TV series counterparts than Digimon.

Wait WHAT. Did you seriously say the movie has worse animation than the tv show? That's probably the most ignorant comment I've read on this site. You're actually saying the (very) low budget tv series had better animation than a fully funded high quality movie adaption? Even Doug himself in the original review makes a comment about how good he thinks the animation is. It certainly looks different than the tv show, but that's because it looks waaaaay better.

Ah, I loved this review; it's one of my favorites. I wondered at the time why JO didn't mention the Summer Wars connection. I'd heard that the graphics and some of the plot elements from that movie were similar to Digimon, but I hadn't realized how similar. Oh, and I loved the shipping joke, too, because it's so easy to relate. I never really watched Digimon, but I watched Pokemon, and... yeah, I didn't take it very well when they wrote Misty off. I heard from friends who used to watch Digimon, though, about how the shipping turned out, and it made me kind of glad I didn't watch it as a kid. Because I would not have been happy.
