So is Nostalgia Critic over now? Are we going to get a bunch of crappy Nostalgia Critic movies (except one that isn't completely awful, but isn't that great either,) a spin-off series that sucks but ends up lasting just as long as the original anyway, followed by a prequel series that starts out awful but then gets cancelled just as it's about to get good?
(For the record, Nostialgia Chick represents Deep Space 9 in this scenario.)
-
you think deep space 9 sucked? i know its subjective and its your opinion but what exactly did you hate about it, for me it was the ebst series by a clear mile due to its more well develpoed charecters who had more intresting personlaites and having more development, i also found that the more gritty and dark stopry made the drama side a lot stronger and much more enjoyable but again its just my opinion
-
08.18.2012 - 20:16 | MarionetteA reference is like one line. Or maybe a quick sight gag. Copying the plot for the entire show, ending with five minutes of just repeating the script of the original comes across more as laboured than awesome, to me, anyway.
I'm sure the five minute rant about how tough it is being a movie critic is a lot funnier if you're drunk, too.
-
But what about the guy that you said, "Sparkle sparkle sparkle!"? Didn't you go to a bar with that guy or something? What about Joe the friend you called to tell if one of the actors from "You Can't Do That On Television" was a boy or girl(played by his brother...there's my answer)? What about the other reviewers? What about the Angry Video Game Nerd? What about the other characters you play as? ...Nevermind, I'm going nowhere with these questions.

Indeed! I'm 30 now. Most of the shows/movies were from 80s/90s. So I think we are running out of nostalgic materials (pre 2000). I don't think Doug is TOO much older than me. So its about time. I'm sure he's ready to move on also.
Thanks for the years of free entertainment. We all look forward to seeing what new stuff you could have in store for us.
I'm glad your ending NC on a high note. A stroke of genius using TNG at the end. Great review! Great run!
Too true - All good things must come to an end.

08.14.2012 - 19:49 | HermaphroGynandroNow THAT was what I call an EPIC REVIEW!!!
(Though I think the future "You" should've said "It's Scrappy!")
-
08.17.2012 - 16:15 | StrayZer0It was what I would call a stupid and pointless review, the 1st 5 minutes was him shouting at nothing then talking to himself then the last 5 minutes were not funny or entertaining and the so called review itself was nothing short of dull, it was a movie of scooby doo.... yet his biggest gripe was it didn't explain the characters enough to people who never saw it...
seriously? who the fuck has never seen or heard of scooby doo, he has been around since the fucking 60's every child has watched th show and every fan wanted fred n daphne to get together and everyone kind of knew shaggy was a hippy and that nobody liked scrappy so they made him the bad guy for the fun of it... it was a movie for the fans, this review was fucking shit. fact.
-
08.27.2012 - 10:16 | Uncle RuckusI really laugh when sad people like you take this whole "Nostalgia Critic" act seriously. He's acting, it's a character.
Why don't you go tell the AVGN to "stop being so angry" while you're at it?
-
08.14.2012 - 19:50 | HermaphroGynandro@ darkness shade sonata
Oh, shit! You're right! This isn't the Scooby Doo review yet!
-
08.14.2012 - 19:52 | moskaudancerThis is a brilliantly written and executed review. When the past-present-future framing device came up, I said to myself, "Huh, it's just like All Good Things", but it didn't hit me that maybe it was a deliberate reference until Q's lines popped up, and when you sat down and started dealing, and the last few lines were straight from TNG, I almost wet myself like an overexcited puppy.
-
08.14.2012 - 19:57 | docscimansonGlad I wasn't the only one to laugh at that. Pretty much as soon as the other's started blowing themselves up, I was like, "are they about to reference...?" Didn't realize Doug was THAT big a Trek fan.
-
08.14.2012 - 20:00 | moskaudancerI'm always an overexcited puppy when I find out that someone I already like is a Trek fan. Just one more reason to have a high opinion of him.
-
08.14.2012 - 21:38 | CrazyChris576
Once they all blew themselves up and the scene cut back to Doug and Orlando, I knew that it was going to be an All Good Things homage to the end. BRILLIANT execution.
I have to say, though, I'm also getting the feeling that this is the big lead-up to the 4th Year event. If so, then we are in for something truly awesome!
-
08.17.2012 - 16:18 | StrayZer0Something awesome? You mean an actual entertainingly well timed comedic review and not shitty cameos with unfunny writing and long winded scenes that go nowhere and are full of self nitpicking but comes across more like he's blowing himself?
-
08.16.2012 - 17:42 | cvrpapc
-
08.14.2012 - 20:40 | PGruntyI started thinking it was similar when the past and future versions showed up, all doing the same thing.
The scene with our wannabe Q-angle confirmed that he was doing there. Almost all of his lines from both white room scenes, included "only Yes/No question", where directly from Q.
-
08.14.2012 - 21:11 | amazed_satsuma@moskaudancer
I was thinking exactly the same thing while I was watching. I didn't thought past/present/furute thing was a deliberate reference until the Q-like guardian angel give the critic a chance to asked 10 yes/no questions which screwed up faster than you can say Picard.
On a side note, I was kind of disappointed we didn't get a Linkara cameo because of the star trek theme
-
08.14.2012 - 22:12 | rgiskardme too. when he said "all good things must come to an end" I was all "Ha! Excellent" and then when the speech and the poker game came I was squeeing.

08.14.2012 - 19:57 | GrayhomeThis review leaves me sad, because it does seem like a farewell episode (what with the rant, the surprising character development, and the reference to the TNG series finale). At the same time, if the show does end now, I am glad, because it is ending on a very good note. Doug, you didn't pull a Simpsons. Congrats.
-
It does felt a good note. Would you say this is a lot better than the Gargabe Pail Kids review which Doug originally thought it was giving NC a high note on that review? Improved or otherwise?
-
08.15.2012 - 08:21 | GrayhomeThe Garbage Pail Kids review is one of my favourites, for sure, because it's probably the worst movie he's reviewed, so there was a lot to talk about. And the ending is pretty epic. I don't know which of the two I prefer (I haven't seen the GPK review in a while), but I think this one works better as a final episode, mostly because of the NC's epiphany at the end.

Methinks dear NC had a Joker's Origin Story moment. His character was just this shy from having his "One Bad Day" breaking point moment at the start there. He just basically melted down, but did it in his character's trademark melodramatic, overly panicked style, and I was seriously expecting him to just look up from his little sad, slumped posture there and just start laughing. And laughing. And never, ever stop.
It was so powerful and startling that when he was handed the cards at the end and said "You know, I was quite the card-player in my youth," I nearly expected some weird snapping point to happen causing a Joker-Critic. Then I remembered we already saw that with Melvin, Brother of the Joker, shuddered, and pushed it from my mind, because no, just no.
Nice seeing the review have a full underlying story to it, though - the start set up the problem in a way that was totally out of left field, the story in the middle was interesting enough even without the film review, and the ending was uplifting and genuinely touching, ending on a high note that's uncharacteristic for the series. It's just nice to see things finally go the Critic's way for once, all because he realized he was the one who was making himself so miserable in the first place. It kind of echoes his first "Nostalgic Commercials" episode where he starts out depressed from the last review, then becomes more confident, except here it starts right at the breaking point and reaches a similar resolution at the end.
Nice job, Doug, I really enjoyed this episode, and because I particularly hate the fact that this film is a guilty pleasure of mine (seriously, why? *head-desks repeatedly*) it was nice seeing you finally rip into it. Thanks for making one of the best episodes of your show be about one of my most hated and reviled of nostalgic memories. Too bad the film couldn't even approach the level of charm the animated show did - if it had, we might have actually had a decent film here.
-
08.14.2012 - 20:18 | MrSanityClausThat was... odd...
Really good, but pretty odd. Is this the end of NC? If it is, then it's sad. Hell of a way to go out, though. :D

-
08.14.2012 - 20:35 | Moreno XThis was the best, written review and I kinda like the interaction with the past-present-future characters you acted Doug. The ending is, and I'm not lying here, the sincere acknowledgement of your NC's 5 years of the show you began (whoa, 5 years. Time flies faster). Additionally, it's the nicest thing for your fans and friends to watch you say a rather emotional moment of thought.
For the best if this is building up for To Boldly Flee, I want to believe you will put NC into hiatus instead of riding him too soon. I say this because I feel it's a good chance for you to take a break from the NC show to work on other projects you wanted to do before you can think of better quality and ideas for NC. I think everyone will believe the same thing too. At least that's how I get about this review and your 4th year special. Great review Doug, it was the best one yet.

Ignoring the people that can't just put total recall's video at the end and click the real review..
God I used to love this movie as a kid. Eh, I still do...
6:25 - Yeah, It's alittle weird, but I never really minded it.
8:27 - That part confused me when I was little. I thought the movie would end too. But nope.. It just kept going!
10:35 - I didn't really like her at all. I didn't like her character or her personality. She just seemed like Shaggy's Princess Peach. A pointless bitch to rescue.
15:05 - :O DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUNN
17:55 - WAIT. THE FUCK THAT IS MR. BEAN HOW DID I MISS THAT?
No, I can't take the rest!
Anyways, good review.

08.14.2012 - 20:41 | musiclover9293WOW! When I first saw that opening, I've never been more scared/nervous for NC! I really thought this was it. I had a feeling that this was the last one ever. As time went on, my theory seemed to be correct. However, at the very end, I had this feeling that this is leading to the 4th year. It's going to be either next week or the week after and I am pumped.
As for the review, it was awesome. I remember seeing this and being really confused because these were not the same characters from the cartoon. Overall a great review and a great story within the review. Well done NC and if I didn't say it before, Congratulations on getting married.
