I'm glad to see you and JO finally got together to do this especially after her retrospective on the Digimon series. The JO signal was hilarious and a creative segway! I haven't seen this movie since the only season of Digimon I liked was the third season but the Angela Anaconda thing is stupid and I remember despising that show every time it was on.

Seeing this just reminded me why I hated the first 2 seasons it was just unfunny and bland except for the fighting. It had such a great concept and potential but fell flat on them. It honestly looks like they captured the early show for a boring movie too. Regardless great review and no doubt my favorite to date.

Technically that would be GEEK POWER. A nerd is someone who is especially academically inclined; a geek is just someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about a hobby or hobbies that most people are neither passionate nor knowledgeable about. They are related and often overlap, but they are not interchangeable, at least not here on the internet.

    Thank you, ender1200

Geek and nerd are not technical terms, and have no general meaning because they were originally conceived as vague insults. There is no "official" meaning of either, or ever a generally accepted one, so quit trying to sound smarter than everyone else and saying there is.
  • IggytThunders  - insults have meanings, dude
It's why they're insulting. If an insult has no basic definition it becomes starved of potency as a derogating assertion.

Nerd refers to anyone with technical aptitude AND fascination with something, often to the detriment of their social status.

A geek popularly meant the same thing, but is now derogative terminology for a somewhat to slobberingly obsessive eccentric, typically about something provincial or seemingly insignificant. Geeks do not have to be competent, a nerd does. Another word for "geek" would be "fan boy".

A dork is a socially alien or flaccid individual, lacking fluency in basic societal niceties and "acceptable" traits.

These terms are often misconstrued because to some degree most nerds or geeks or dorks tend to be characterized by one or more of these terms.

And geek is a technical term. Originally coined by the carnival/circus racket, the term refers to a performer contractually obligated to bite the heads off poultry for popular entertainment and/or delectation.
All this you can look up on Webster.

As far as I know, geek is a old word for strange, queer, bizarre. Freak shows used to have a character called The Geek, usually someone with odd traits difficult to summarize in a self explanatory title (unlike Bearded Worman, for exemple). Aside from that, I've seen the term used in so many different ways that any attempt to find a modern specific meaning is doomed to fail.
  • rodney2019

I collect Pokemon cards only :p Sorry, I never collect Digimon cards. I was addicted to Pokemon cards (and still am), and some guys in my school at the time said the rules for Digimon training cards were lost and inaccurate - simply saying the instructions on Pokemon card game was much better than Digimon's. I don't know why and I'll never know ;/

I remember a trailer for this movie. It was a group of animated teenagers singing "We're the Kids in America" and they had a monkey with them. I didn't know what a monkey had to do with Digimon... and I still don't.

I'm surprised the Nostalgia Critic didn't use any jokes involving Angewoman. Just saying.

Yes JesuOtaku, Patamon and Gatoman's mega level digivolutions are awesome. It's a pity that the makers of the movie didn't give them more screen time.
  • alexalberto81
    avatar
Throwing it out there... Which is the Mega level form of Gatomon, Magnadramon or Ophanimon?
  • Devanostator
If you go by the movie, Magnadramon. If you go by Digimon Frontier, AKA the unofficial Digimon Adventure 03, then Ophanimon.
  • animegx43  - Both
Gatomon can either Digivolve to Magnadramon (a dragon) or Ophanimon (an angel)

Kind of weird how she can go from a dog, to a cat, to an angel, to a dragon.
  • GallopingGoomba
    avatar
Magnadramon was her original Mega form, but now it's Ophanimon.
  • Spiritkitten
    avatar
Actually I think it's supposed to go something like Magnadramon is the natural mega level for Gatomon. However, using the Digiegg of Miracles (I think it's that) Gatomon is able to Armor Digivolve into Ophanimon. Hey it makes sense to me...

Well, the first wasn't that bad. It had charm and knew what it was but managed to make it work, with the characters actually being believable. This way, everyone had their favourite. The characters developed decently and interacted well with each other.
The second was horrible. Unnable to capture the charm of the original and having crappy characters and extensive plot holes in a poorly written plot (well, the first arc was decent as was the last, but the clusterfuck of episodes dedicated to an emo Digimon going around blowing stuff up and the main cast destroying towers were horrible).

Wish they would have gone into more detail about what was cut out, like the final segment's subplot about the original Digidestined getting kidnapped, which the synopsis on the back of the case still mentions for some reason.
  • Moreno X  - To ST
That might be helpful, for JO to explain. But like Critic said: his video, his sow, doesn't care about DiGimon. Which kinda sucks but it's understandable. Besides, if anything were to be done right with this dub movie and just release the three original films individually, it could've be the proper entry to get Critic into knowing about Digimon, but it didn't. Too bad for Fox Kids for bitching the shark and sell it poorly. But unlike NC though, I like the dub movie. Long story short, I don't mind and I was entertained. That doesn't mean I don't like the Japanese versions, and I did watch them on YouTube years ago. Really sad, I tell ya. Well, that gives a reason of why Fox Kids is no longer around anymore.....

    :(
  • alexalberto81

It really should have been released as THREE separate movies... Greedy Fox and/or Saban!
  • pokemega32
Jeff Nimoy wanted to put the first two together (which were 20 and 40 minutes long respectively) and then release the third (60 minutes) as a separate movie, but the producers vetoed the idea.
  • alexalberto81
    avatar
I read about that... THAT would have been loads better than what we got. I still think they should have gone along with three separate movies, though - especially if all three don't have anything to do with each other.
  • dennett316
    avatar
Quick question...how can Fox be called greedy for only releasing one movie rather than 2 or 3? If they were greedy they would've released all 3 to theatres and charged people for them....even if they were very short.

No, they're not greedy (in this case), just massively incompetent and ham fisted in how they approached it.

I enjoyed this even though I barely remember Digimon- I saw the show only a few times and definitely never saw this movie.

You guys are hilarious together! And the Angry Joe signal needs to exist.
  • Omnicrom
This movie is a great example of how NOT to do an adaptation of source material.

It's more than just a Rumor that this was original 3 separate movies. I've watched them in Japanese, I can absolutely confirm that originally the movies had nothing to do with each other. The first section is a prequel movie, released at the same time as the original series. The events of that initial section tie into the first season. The second section takes place after the first season and before the second and the third takes place during Digimon's second season.

Oh and not only are they originally not related but they were BADLY re-edited. Each movie received deep and extensive cuts. There's an entire plotline and nearly half and hour of footage cut from the third Digimon movie in order to cram it into this ugly thing. Notably when Doug complains about how it's nothing but pointless action? It's because all the character scenes and quieter moments were left on the cutting room floor.

The Second movie is also not helped by the cuts. They cut out quite a few scenes explaining exactly how dangerous and terrifyingly naïve Diablomon was, it had a better script and actually did make the story a lot more tense. The subtitle was originally “Our War Game”, a reference to the old-school computer film “War Games” which is where the nuclear missile plotline came from.

I could go on and will: The endless horrible jokes did not exist in the original. Angela Anaconda is a horror show and the re-airings on non-Fox Kids channels thankfully removed that nightmare. The idea that this was meant as a jumping on point is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard, they're direct tie-ins to the show and knowing the cast is incredibly important.

I'm rambling. Digimon didn't have a great dub but it wasn't nearly as crummy as this. The first movie was great at evoking a sense of wonder, it did a good job showing the story from the eyes of very young children. The Second movie was quite good because it evoked a sense of helplessness and fear. The third movie was an overlong trashy trainwreck of a film in the Japanese but even it is horribly miscut and poorly edited together. I'm glad that when they aired Movies 4-7 on TV they didn't try to smash them together, instead airing them individually like they were always intended.
  • polygonalchemist
    avatar
Also, the first two movies are actually part of the Adventure / Adventure 02 story line and are referenced in the show. The events of the third movie are never brought up during the show, even when they introduce American Digi-destined later on, Wallace/Willas isn't there. So it was probably one of those one-off movies that are common with Anime that arn't meant to be 'canon'.

Kinda like how I don't think the 2nd Tamers movie is considered part of the story lime, while the first one is (since Takato's cousin from the movie shows up in the show later on).
  • PumpkinRain
I just wanna back up Omnicrom, that information is 100% correct. I don't want this review to scare people away from some absolutely amazing movies. The first two japanese movies are well worth a watch. There's still jokes, but they're actually well formed, everything is perfectly paced, characters are loveable and the animation - oh my god the animation. And I thought the third one was okay - maybe worth watching if you liked the second season (which I don't, really. I mean, seriously, how could you ruin tai and soraaaa waaaaaaaaah!)

Seriously people give the japanese versions a chance!
  • thorondragon
i liked the third movie well enough. i like how the digimon villain was not, in fact, trying to take over the world (cue bison), but was a mentally deranged, obsessive, yet pitiable entity. was rather long and had its flaws, but it was enjoyable. not like this movie.
  • Moreno X
Well, that was sure a heck of a funny review (and unexpected). Thanks Critic and JO!

Now, my retrospective opinion on Digimon: The Movie. As much as I am now aware to understand that three original Japanese versions are the superior ones than the dub version that Fox butchered/bundled into a 82 minutes feature film, I still enjoy it no matter how disappointing it does for other fans. I was in school during 9th and 10th grade when Digimon Season 1 and 2 was on, and me and other guys at the time would watch Pokemon and Digimon constantly (well, just only me ^_^;). It was our programming favorites we watch while other guys (specifically the gangsta wanna-be douchebags and jerks) constantly talk about Dragon Ball Z during class, lunch and after school. Now, I got no problem with that since I watched DBZ too at the time when I turn on my TV and see three favorite anime shows on YTV (Canadian channel) when I arrive home from school. But unlike me, those idiots talk about DBZ like RELIGIOUSLY, and ever time I share with other guys in my class and during lunch, they felt annoyed. How funny is that?

Anyway, during that period, I remember TV ads of the movie during commercial breaks aaannnddd I didn't have the time and money. I managed to experience Pokemon: The First Movie in theaters but couldn't do it with Digimon. Instead, I was at a Toy 'R' Us and saw one last VHS copy of the movie and bought it.  Before my 10th grade graduation day, I invited some guys and friends to the library during lunch to watch Digimon: The Movie and, as I clearly remember, we all enjoyed it. Of course it was the bad puns and in-jokes but hey, for your information JO (and Critic), I love it - we all love it. We never had a contest of saying anything bad about the movie, and it explains why I still own it to this day :). Make no mistake, as if I must stress further, I still enjoy the film. Sure it's a manipulative opportunity and it shows Fox trying to compete with  Kids' WB's Pokemon in every cause, butchered or otherwise. Come to think of it now, what propelled Fox and Saban to bundle them together? Sure they have to do changes in the dub, but what was the purpose to bundle into one instead of releasing them individually? Then again, this was Fox who was dealing problems with their kids' program that will cease to broadcast. Back then, when I entered high school (11th/12th grade), I had no idea Fox was going to give the time slot to 4Kids and sold Fox Family Worldwide/Fox Kids brand to Disney (which does explain why Disney owns the dub versions of Digimon). It's a messing backstory of Fox Kids' closure and it gives enough reason why people despise 4Kids' methods. Well, look at 4Kids now :D. Sooner or later, CW 4Kids will disappear just like 4Kids TV.

That's pretty much all I have to say and everyone has different tastes about the movie, I have my own. Besides, if NC likes Pig Power rap, then I like the DigiRap. It's guilty pleasure.
  • Moreno X  - CONTINUED
NOTE: for anyone who first bought the Digimon movie on VHS, did it came with a Pokemon training card promo edition? 'Cause I bought it and inside the cover, I got a Marill card. Weird huh? I loved t villian Myotismon (he was one of my first anime male crushes as a kid) and it had a pretty epic storyline nearing the end.

But yeah, even I as a huge anime fan can admit the fanbase can be very embarrassing to be associated with. It especially pisses me off when weeaboos bash the Astro Boy and Speed Racer movies just for being American adaptations without actually watching them! Speed Racer is, like, 100% accurate to its source material, people! What more do you weeaboos want!?

Oh man, I used to love Digimon as a kid. And looking back on it now, I still think the American dub was fairly decent. Sure the jokes were lame and the "Digimon, Digital Monsters" theme is a bit cheesy, but it's still really enjoyable to watch and you can tell that the dubbers really did seem to care about the show.

The movie though...ugh. I don't even know what Fox were thinking when they released that mess. I was a huge Digimon fan and even I couldn't understand a thing that was going on. Critic is right...it's just a bunch of random fights and scenes with no real connection to each other. Didn't any of the people at Fox watch the movie before releasing it? Didn't anybody think "hmmm...maybe we should just redub the original Japanese movies instead of making this incoherent mess?"
  • Moreno X  - To Tameel1
My guess is it's too much thinking and too hard to dub faithfully and separately. Pokemon movies are always alone and are never bundled. I can't understand why Fox and Saban thought it will be easy for them to do the opposite.
  • Devanostator
This movie... Oh god this movie. It's the third worst thing that has ever happened to the franchise, right after Digimon Tamers and The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time.

I've seen all of the 3 movies in their original Japanese dub, and I can say, this clusterf**k doesn't do them any justice whatsoever. I wouldn't even feel so bad if Our War Game wasn't one of my favorite movies ever, period.

But holy damn, the Finnish dub of this movie is even bigger of a mess. Why? Well, the Finnish dub of Digimon is based on the original Japanese version: No horribad jokes or stupid dialogue or anything, and the music is just beautiful. Then this movie comes out, and whoop-de-doo: It's based on the American dub. That would be bad enough, BUT this movie was released in Finland before Season 1 had even finished airing here!

But my biggest gripe about the Finnish version of this movie... They gave Gatomon a male voice actor. THEY. GAVE. GATOMON. A MALE. VOICE. ACTOR.

Didn't they bother to SEE the movie before they started dubbing? Did they ever see Angewomon? How could they possibly come to the conclusion that my dear, precious Gatomon, is a dude?! ASBDASHDVASGDVERFGVYRGVY# T# MELON

But with that said, great review. One of your better ones so far Critic. Granted, JO's not one of my favorite reviewers on this site, but she actually did a damn good job here. Well done.

what the hell was wrong with tamers? arguably the best season of all 5 (soon to be 6).
i dont even remember the 'jump through time' thing, unless you mean season 4 where he turned into a half digimon...which was cool.

the movie isnt cannon, thank god. since its a bullshit re-edit it wont ever be canon.
  • wispernrain  - Tamers?
@Jegsimmons I don't think they ever mentioned Tamers in this review, they mentioned 02, but not Tamers, JO even did a very long look at Tamers and she seemed to like it
  • Bloodrealm
He was responding to Devanostator's comment.
  • Moreno X  - To Jegsimmons
Which kinda explains of connecting the films together to try to reach out fans of the show to put "continuity" with show's canon to this dub's continuity. I can see why and, for me, I don't mind at all (I like the dub no matter what) but I know the feeling the fans can get with the dub film. Disappointing I tell ya.
  • PGrunty  - Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time.
He means season 7, which recently aired in Japan. It's actually a direct sequel to season 6, and is not worth a crap, at all. It basically reconfigures the Digimon universe into a Pokemon clone. Random kid has problem, catch a monster, and use it later. Yuck.
  • Moreno X  - To PGrunty
Tell me man, the way you're saying of Xros Wars and it's sequel, how bad is it really? I watched one episode of Xros War and thought "not bad" but I stop there. I've read comments from people who are not fond with new seasons of Digimon just like the fans of Pokemon are not thrill with Bkack & White which at least I tell you about B&W that it's not that bad at all (minus Ash's age and character development). So what's going with Digimon's new seasons? Am I missing about them?
  • detraephot
Xros Wars was actually quite good once you got through the first few episodes, even if it had flaws here and there.
But the sequel to it was really bad. It promised characters from the earlier seasons to return (which they did...like in the end) but it had so many episodes that had nothing to do with the main plot that it eventually was cut short and rushed the ending.

So give the first Xros Wars a chance but ignore it's sequel.

Xros Wars: about as good as 02 and frontier, lack of character development and obvious rewrite, but overall very enjoyable.

Xros Wars 2 Young Hunters..whjadijadi: BAD!, monster of the week show with no character development, EVERYTHING about what little major plot there is, is an excuse for "we wanted to bring the old protagonists back", and they didn't even do anything with the old protagonists; they come in save their asses a couple times and that's about it.
oh and this line uttered during the last minute "I just felt like saving your world" WHYYYYYYYYY!!!
  • PGrunty
Xros Wars itself was perfectly fine. Not the greatest Digimon series by any stretch, but interesting enough. Good action, but oddly the Digimon got more character development then the kids did. If you like the franchise, give it a shot.

Young Hunters, though, was a completely different thing. Easily the worst of the seasons of Digimon, period.
  • Jegsimmons

no it season 6 which is a sequel to 5. 7 hasnt even been thought of yet.

and number 5 is digimon squad or some shit, tamers is 3, and frontier (not as good as tamers but still good) is season 4

Not to soon to be, Season 6 ended already.

[the movie isnt cannon] - Jegsimmons

Actually, it is actually canon, at least the first two parts of it. The prequel part is referenced in Adventure and Omni/Omegamon from Part 2 is referenced in 02 as the "first DNA evolution"
  • PGrunty
I'm not going to defend Young Hunters, which is utter crap that relied entirely on its cross-over gimmick that it didn't do ANYTHING with at all.

However, Tamers is the best the series ever got. it was written by a guy who does MIND-FUCK anime and is quite good at it. Pretty dark storyline for a kids show, but it really didn't go over the top.
  • LikaLaruku

I've seen clips of what I can only assume are Finnish "fandubs" of Digimon.
  • Berlioz II
    avatar
Not necessarily. Professional Finnish dubs are usually no better than amateur fandubs.
  • Rynjin

    Hwat.

Tamers was probably the best series of the original three. It had more plot, character, and all that good stuff than the two previous seasons.

Don't get me wrong, Adventure was amazing (and 02 was...okay), but give credit where it's due, Tamers was the best developed series of them I've seen regardless of whether the darker plotlines were to your taste or not.

As for the movie...I liked the middle part, anyway, if only because Omnimon was a badass.

Almost the same thing here in Croatia
Croatian dub of Digimon TV show was based on the original Japanese version, but the dub of the movie, unfortunately, taken from the American version.

I watched the movie (worst of all, I have it on VHS, and not only that but also the first three Pokemon movies) before the TV show, and I did not understand what the hell is going on, but it's good that TV show was excellent, unlike this very confusing movie.
  • Bloodrealm
Oh, finally someoen who doesn't pour gratuitous amounts of praise over Tamers! I didn't really like it too much, and I didn't realize why until I saw JO's retrospective: they changed the genre from fantasy to sci-fi, and it didn't really feel like Digimon to me. I honestly like the first two seasons better, though I suspect it might just be personal taste.

Oh, and are you serious?! Male Gatomon?!
  • rhap-panda
    avatar
Yes, yes, all of the yes! >ws movie a couple days ago. I wear my nostalgia-goggles when I watch this all the time, but it was really bad. The dub as a whole sucks so bad...
