05.22.2012 - 20:51 | KamdanMan, I hate these pointless crossovers. They're nothing but commercials for the other reviewer.
-

Crossovers aren't pointless, it shows how the people of TGWTG are like family. Doug said so himself he made it that way, as the inspiration was taken from The Animaniacs. Sure, some of the crossovers are "meh" at the least, but I enjoy them.
You don't like, then don't watch and move on, it's that simple.

Constructive criticism is great and invaluable for artists. Just like encouragement and praise is invaluable to give someone incentive and to boost their motivation to keep going, or even to show that what they're doing is entertaining and something they should keep doing. However, insults and downright degradation of a product with no reason for why or how it could be improved are fairly useless - it's why most producers ignore them.
There isn't anything wrong with criticism just as there isn't anything wrong with liking everything that someone does. Just because you can't find anything to criticize doesn't make you an idiot. All it means is that you have a certain opinion.
Considering your language, you are minimising the intended insult in the original posting in order to put it in a more moderate light in comparison to the people who like all of NC's work, who you in turn insult as "brainless fans."
What you've done is actually insulted the person who made the original post, who plainly had a strong and deliberate opinion that was MEANT to be insulting in order to show their disapproval (which they are free to have, even if some people disagree), and you've also insulted the fans of NC's work who don't find a reason to criticize it. You've insulted both extremes in 1 sentence. Impressive, isn't it?
In other words, you're an idiot who has ignored the content for an appraisal of commenting itself, superimposing your approval of moderate opinions (a little bit of criticism, not too much praise), while ignoring the fact that people are absolutely free to have their opinions, even if they are extreme.
So this is my opinion on what you've wrote. Personally I only like maybe half of NC's stuff, but I would never presume to tell someone who loved all of it that their opinion was stupid or worthless next to mine, even if I argued with them over the content. Take your superior attitude and learn: they'll always be someone out there with a greater superiority complex and ego to stroke than yours who will willingly get pissed off at your presumptions.
Of course, you're free to HAVE your opinion. I'm just disagreeing with it. Hehehehe.

Uhh... yeah. Might wanna consider paying attention to them sometime. Unlike most commercials, which are either hyperbolic nonsense or straight-up lies, crossovers are endorsements done by each reviewer for the other's work. Like one of them? Here's a video where they work with someone you might not know! Like that person they do stuff with? You can go watch their show! Don't like it? They probably won't show up again any time soon so you can pretend this never happened!
Pretty good deal for everyone, really. The worst YOU have to endure is an episode you don't like as much. Which, I have to point out, is something you'll have to put up with from every TV or web series ever made.
-

05.23.2012 - 09:34 | TooMuchFreeTimeKamdan half the people I watch on this site I do so because I first saw them IN CROSSOVERS. Sure, the pair-ups don't always work well, but getting a taste of another reviewer's work can tempt someone into looking at their stuff as well. I'm pretty sure I first met Spoony and Linkara in the Alone in the Dark review, now I watch their vids all the time!
-
05.23.2012 - 13:36 | FishEyenoMiko
"I'm pretty sure I first met Spoony and Linkara in the Alone in the Dark review, now I watch their vids all the time!"
Yeah, same here. And Cinema Snob from his crossovers with NC ("Leprechaun") and Linkara ("Bimbos BC"). Sometimes I'll start watching a reviewer because they review something I'm interested in, then I like their style and look for more (like Nash with his DW reviews), but crossovers are a good way to see reviewers you're not familiar with.
-
05.24.2012 - 07:10 | Chloekittie
I saw TGWTG watching the AVGN a few years back during their war.
Then from Ferngully review i watched the NChick more then from her i became a TITS (Todd in the Shadows) fan, from TITS i went to the Rap Critic.
Then how i discovered The Snob was when i was browsing around and found something about one of he's newest videos called "Child Bride" and to this day when ever i watch one of his reviews, i still have the same reaction of this: O_O
______________
So yes, Crossovers, sometimes being annoying, feeling forced or just plain stupid still give the other reviewer a chance to expand and introduce themselves to a different audience.
-
05.23.2012 - 09:59 | QuestionTheMajority
With that in mind, a crossover was the perfect way to review a movie that was nothing but a pointless outlet for animators from the 1970's to advertise how obsessed they were with drugs and sex!
Seriously, I love cartoons, but I hate most 60's and 70's animation for this very reason. Yeah, we get it. You like drugs and sex. Is there anything else you'd like to talk about? Anything?
*sigh* Okay, more drugs and sex then...
-

-
05.23.2012 - 15:28 | KamdanThe crossovers with Spoony, Linkara, Cinema Snob, the Nostalgia Chick, Angry Joe and That SciFi Guy came in more naturally. These crossovers, particularly this one, are a lot more forced, as evident by the opening, where he's just "scheduled" to do it, rather than a well thought out idea to have a crossover in the first place. Again, it's just to draw in other viewers, while we're missing a real Nostalgia Critic episode.
-
Kamdan, I agree with some of your points.
Some crossovers can be good (for example, I think many of us here first heard of the critic because of his crossover with the AVGN).
But sometimes crossovers/cameos are pointless (like in the Ponyo review).
I don't understand why there have been so many crossovers lately. They used to be few and, like, a "surprise". But when there are too many, the thing that becomes a surprise is to have a review WITHOUT guests!
-
05.24.2012 - 16:20 | baticus_moronicus
@Kamdan- He always has a schedule, whether it's a normal NC review, a crossover, or even a crossover where at the beginning he has a joke about the Bum reading him his schedule! Just because he happened to make a joke about scheduling doesn't mean this crossover was any more or less scheduled than any other. ^^;
What exactly makes you think he didn't actually want or choose to crossover with Diamanda Hagan? Is it because he made a joke that he didn't know who she was and wanted to crossover with JO? ...You do know in character jokes aren't the same as what Doug thinks in real life, right?
-
07.15.2012 - 21:16 | TheIrrehensibleTJ
To be fair, Kamdan made no mention of Doug not wanting to do the crossover, just said that it felt forced and unnatural. Also, I doubt they were saying that they didn't realize the show was scheduled and scripted, but this one where he literally says he's doing the crossover just because it's on the schedule as part of the on-screen show makes it feel more forced and unnatural.
I didn't hate it, but I do agree that it didn't have a very natural flow. Of course, doing the interrupting thing yet again would have felt even more unnatural at this point, so who knows?
-
05.24.2012 - 18:10 | joshthegraveJeez everyone come down on this dude for not liking crossovers. He never said they were all pointless, only that he hates the pointless ones and that the pointless ones are just commercials. with his phrasing it seems pretty apparent that he thinks there are good crossovers and this just wasn't one of them.
-
05.30.2012 - 17:21 | 13secondstomidnight
Hmmm... you're right, but that isn't the impression that the comment left. If you want to examine it in that way, then you have to ask which cross-overs does he mean by "these" - what's the criteria for inclusion?
I disagree with him that any cross-overs are pointless, but I wouldn't say all of them are necessarily good. However, the original poster doesn't comment on whether they are good or not, so I'm just inserting my opinion there.
Anyway, I think a lot of people are going to jump on him because most people who comment are ones who like the NC's reviews, and so they will want to question or confront someone who doesn't like them. Just human nature to want to discuss things with people who have opposite opinions to us, though, I think.
-
They ARE commercials, but they are also collaborations and ways to share and play off other reviewers, learning new ways of production and acting.
They're not always good, but I wouldn't say they are pointless. In fact you yourself called them commercials, so in fact they can't be pointless by your own admission, right?
-
05.22.2012 - 21:56 | trlkly
Replying because this is important:
People, asking if someone is really a guy as if that is a bad thing is not just a funny comment. It is transphobic, a form of bigotry.
Now I'm sure Diamanda herself won't say anything. She is a strong woman, and is used to this crap. But she's far from the only person you guys have done this to.
Watch the review. Comment on the review. Comment on the character. But leave the comments on gender or sexuality somewhere else. Please.
-
05.22.2012 - 22:58 | rockybalboa211
I totally agree with you, trlkly!
Diamanda is a very talented reviewer and should only be critiqued on her work, not on her person/character. I'm really tired of people being complete jerks to reviewers because they don't look or act a certain way. That is just horrible!
I mean, a lot of people did that to Iron Liz and, god knows, someone as nice as her doesn't deserve any of that garbage!

Distinquishingly regular people get smack talked about them all the time as well, just for being regular. You're just ignoring all that and taking it for granted, actually demanding special attention and special thoughtfulness for yourself. Doing that you're disrespecting the very human condition where the more mature ones know to suck it up, and learn not only to be themselves, but to let others treat themselves as such as well. Any disposition comes with a baggage, and demanding levity is actually just whining.
-
05.23.2012 - 08:22 | Cassmi
Btw, "distinquishingly" isn't a word. "distinguishingly" is, however, there's no cohesive way to use it in that sentence.
Regardless, I agree with what you say about the absurdity of demanding special attention (the vile plague that is "political correctness") just because one represents a different disposition. Having said that, I don't think it's okay to diss a person for their lifestyle choices. Critique is okay but slander (or in the case of comments, libel) isn't.
-
Why do so many people, the demands of homosexuals and transsexuals for equal rights (right to marry, adopt children, etc.) interpreted as a desire for special treatment, that unfortunately I will never understand.
And what this has to do with Diamanda Hagan. I do not think she does it go with such a make-up out there on the street and harassing people (it's just her character, dammit).
-
05.24.2012 - 18:29 | joshthegraveI don't think that adoption and marriage are the things at issue. I think his point is that we all get made fun of for stuff. Its special treatment to try to prevent people from poking fun at one group and not another. People get called ugly. some people are ugly. probably most people. saying a woman looks like a man should not be considered transphobic or homophobic. It's rude, but I'm not willing to say that it's a sign of some deeper hatred. that just seems crazy. People say I look like a woman when I'm clean shaven and I take no offense to it. I'm all for gay rights. Hell I've participated in gay rights movements as a straight guy.
-
05.23.2012 - 10:06 | QuestionTheMajority
-
Transexuals aren't asking for special rights, they are asking to be treated equally. They are honsetly mistreated in society by many, many people. Are you honsetly saying just let Transexuals deal with the very high rate of abuse at their jobs? To just deal with the fact they are considered second rate citizens?
-

I consider Hagan to be a very sexy woman, Doug! I would do anything to be one of her minions!
I mean, she used threats of violence to force Rob to hire her! Now that is one resourceful person! :D
I've seen this movie before!! They showed it three weeks ago on the Turner Classic Movie channel at around 2:00 in the morning. I was half asleep when this film was on though, so I just assumed that I was dreaming the sequences of the film.
It sure is a little suspect, Doug! You know Nash, the wielder of the banhammer, would literally destroy you if you tried anything on JesuOtaku! o_O

Maybe it's just me...maybe it's her choice of make-up or the fact that she is surrounded by black (and I've always had a fear of the dark), but Diamanda scares me too...but I was also afraid of Heath Leger as the Joker.
But interesting review, I've never seen. I don't plan on seeing it, and I've already been warned not to see the John Carter movie. So, Thank you for the warning! excuse me, i'm going to have nightmares now

Okay I have to say something in response to these "transphobic" comments you people seem to be accusing Doug of. If you really believe Diamanda to be a strong woman that can take care of herself why do any of you feel the need to stand up for her and some kind of injustice you're just grasping at? LET IT GO! You all are well aware that Doug is in fact making jokes about a character WHILE IN CHARACTER HIMSELF, he's not saying those things about Amanda (can't recall her name) herself but her character Diamanda Hagan.
But since you trlkly, rockybalboa211 and Sadie Sandwicheadman all take great offense to the idea that anyone can be "transphobic" even over a blatant joke, you don't want to be called out as being pretentious (and yes I do know the meaning of the word and feel I am using it in the correct context) you immediately claim to be sticking up for a person you all agree upon being able to take care of herself in order to convey this sort of liberal/tolerant attitude you have when in reality it's you three, and not the person you say is the victim, that are greatly offend by I again repeat A JOKE!
You all claim to be sick of intolerant people, but you know what I'm sick of? People like you that feel the need to be offended and put out by "bigots" that you want to accuse Doug and Chad (since I know you STILL have your collective panties in a knot over the Birdo in 5 seconds video) for people that have their own voices and can damn well can speak up for themselves because you can't get off your high horses for two seconds and admit that it's YOU and NOT THEM that is really offended!
Doug would NEVER purposely make fun of a person if he feels like the joke is not in good taste (as he has stated in many commentaries and videos were he speaks as himself, Doug Walker, NOT HIS CHARACTER Nostalgia Critic) or if the person he is poking fun of takes offense to it. Have you forgotten that when it comes to the script-writing process on TGWTG that the person writing the script not only consoles the person they're doing a cross-over with about what exactly the person should say to keep it authentic but gives them a copy of said script to read from so it's not like Amanda didn't know what kind of joke might be in it. And I can guarantee if she did take offensive to it, Doug would have reworked it or taken it out all together! He's the last person that would want to genuinely offended someone, let alone a fellow reviewer.
-
05.23.2012 - 03:09 | EpicFish
If you have forgotten, and it really seems like you have, that joke IS exactly how NC would react to seeing Hagan for the first time! Doug was in CHARACTER!
And as for CR's Birdo video, IT WAS A FRIGGIN' JOKE! He meant nothing by it! It's people like you three that would purposely look for something in nothing just so you could have something to be offended about. Oh, I'm sorry so you could be offended for someone else about! Seriously not everyone needs someone especially pretentious people to speak for them! LIGHTEN UP!
There, I'm done ranting. Sorry Doug, but unlike some people, I thought the review was very entertaining and the jokes were well done.

05.23.2012 - 12:01 | EnyawUsually only one of them writes the script. It's been lamp-shaded in more than a few crossovers.
-
05.24.2012 - 18:34 | joshthegravebut the other person still gets the script and has to read it on camera and then edit it later. she would know about that line before the video hit the site.
-
05.23.2012 - 05:34 | LighticeA person with sanity at TGWTG comments? Wow. Well, kudos to you.
-
I never said anything in my last comment that was against Doug's remarks towards Diamanda in the review or against the review in general. Personally, I thought that part was hilarious! That response fit Doug's character really well.
What I was against were the people (on the comment boards) who were just super mean towards the reviewers on TGWTG for no reason at all. I mean, if you want to critique their personal style of reviewing that is alright, yet to actually, in a serious manner, make fun of the way they look is just really horrible.
We should only critique the message and the conveyance of that message, not the messenger.
I know Diamanda is a strong person, yet this has happened to other reviewers as well and it should be stopped. In the past, this has happened to the likes of The Last Angry Geek, Iron Liz, Obscurus Lupa, Linkara, and HopewithintheChaos. We should just be nice to one another! :D
The only thing I didn't like about this review was the lack of minions. Every Hagan video should have her maiming minions! :D

A Ralph Bakshi film?! Man, I LOVE him! He's one of my favorite animators and it's a crying shame that his work never catapulted him to the mainstream like he deserved. "Christmas in Tattertown" proved that he'd would've been a '90s cartoon icon if he'd been given a fair shot.
Now has all of his work been good to me? No. But his works have shown that the dude had talent and creativity that's sorely lacking today.

Duuuuuuuude! This movie is AWESOME! From the glory days of MTV! Righteous cult classic! The sequel was kind of bogus.
Though I've only seen the censored version on TV where all of the sex is cut out, which is good because a LOT of kids watched this. The sex scenes are naturally pointless & contribute nothing.

I love this movie and I read the mags for a few years!
I've been waiting for you to review this for the past couple years since I started fallowing your reviews! I was actually a bit afraid once I learned you were since I like it actually this much but you were pretty decent with it! I'd hoped you'd reviewed it alone or with like Marzgurl or Cinema Snob as it falls kinda into their categories more. But, Diamanda is cewl enough!
The one nitpick I have is it seems ya'll ignored the line stating the Locnar(orb) exist in alternate universes and its powers vary from world to world where it goes!
I'm surprised no joke in the DEN segment about how he doesn't seem to be concerned with the fact he just teleported 2 dangerous beings back to his world and they'll possibly kill his family since it is stated more than likely they're going to appear in his bedroom at his house as that was where he had the Locnar in that universe! Also, DEN was actually more of a knock off of John Carter of Mars(a book series we already know you haven't read or heard of from your movie review) which was a pretty good movie just no-body went to see it because of bad marketing! The writer for DEN was a huge fan of the John Carter book and wanted to make a comic and animated movie based on it but something to do with copy rights or whatever and he just basically made a more adult knockoff!
In the one with the 2 druggy aliens and the robot the reason they picked up the robot scientist like that was he malfunctioned and started trying to rape the secretary woman so they just decided to say "fuck it" and get the robot and get the hell out of there!
The ending is confusing but I just took it that by revealing to the girl who she once was in another demention or past life she gain her power to kill it again in this world!
Speaking of the sequels and reboot! I hope some one reviews Heavy Metal 2000 as even I have a ton of problems with it! And the reboot sounds awesome as they've gotta lot of good names attached to it like James Cameron, Jack Black, The Wochouski Bros, Joh-K, ect all big names in music, animation, writing, and scifi!!! And if I recall right the big name producing it is Guy Richie! XD SWEEEEET!!!
CR cewl cameo! Which makes me wonder why no mention of the South Park episode since your ending was a lot like it's parody episode's ending! XD
-

I have to say......THE IS THE BEST REVIEW CROSSOVER EVER! Each one brought something to the table and I am glad NC tackled something like Heavy Metal. And who better to tackle it than with Diamanda Hagen.
Seriously who else do you honestly think could do Heavy Metal other than her I ask ya!?!
I just loved how Critic was cowering in fear of her and she just loved it. True Mistress all the way! :D
Also loved the Don Henly song. I sing that in the car whenever I hear it on the radio.

Did you even watch the actual movie? Oh wait no you didn't you're only basing you're opinion on Doug's brief summery. It's more then just "hurr bewwwbs durr" personally I believe that people who say this are just as bad as people who say "PEOPLE ONLY LIKE POWER GIRL BECAUSE OF HER BEEWWBS!" or "TOMB RAIDER ONLY HAS ACTUAL FANS BECAUSE LARA HAS HUGE BEEWWBS!".
On to the review itself. I think Doug should have done this with Brad,CR,Todd,Paw hell even Linkara would have all been better choices then this person with a gimmick.
-
05.23.2012 - 13:12 | cat-tom-boyNot to be rude but they all have gimmicks. Most people on the site do.
Though I will agree its a little stupid to say you hate a movie just based on a review only meant to entertain.
-
"I think Doug should have done with this Brad, CR, Todd,Paw hell even Linkara would have all been better choices-"
Okay maybe Brad I could get behind. CR, I don't know alot of what video reviews he does that would fit with the style of "Heavy Metal" and Linkara, he may see it from a comic book reader's perspective but that is it.
But when you said Todd and Paw I know you are seriously reaching. Todd reviews pop and hip-hop music. (bad music I might add) I don't see how it would fit into the kind of music he reviews and no offense, if Doug took your advice and choose Todd to review "Heavy Metal" with him over DH, than it would be a horrible mismatch.
And Heavy Metal isn't really considered a musical because the songs are not mentioned, so Paw would be out (thought I would love a crossover with Paw and NC at some point) but Todd would be a horribe choice. DH knows her heavy metal music, the movie, and seems the best person to convey it. Todd and Paw would be a horrible choice in my honest opinion. Maybe somewhere down the line there would be a movie best suited for thier collabative geniuses, but this is not the movie for it at the moment.

05.23.2012 - 16:34 | AufbruchI don't. She's a dead ringer for the killer in Sleepaway Camp. Google a video of the ending for that movie if you want confirmation.
She also needs to come to terms with her inability to ad-lib and adjust her prep style to make up for this, especially in the Miyazaki series she's doing. There's "off the cuff and intimate" and then there's "do you plan on GOING somewhere with this, honey?".

Gonna say it. She scares me. But to be fair this review wasn't that bad and had some good moments in it. Nice of you to give some of the more less known people a little attention, though I would love to see a crossover between you and Film Brain (especially since you fulfilled my previous wish and did one with Lupa).

05.22.2012 - 20:58 | Captain SiberiaWay cool animated film, no matter what these charlatans may say.
They didn't plant the scientist. He was just an idiot.
/Heavy Metal II/ is a sequel in name only, and in their stealing the Getting Dressed scene from /Heavy Metal/. /Heavy Metal II/ was Saturday Morning shit posing as a sequel. They put in some nudity, but underneath, it's just kiddy stuff.

Can the girl's mouth open any wider?
This is a strange movie... I was close to actually watching it a couple of years ago, but we never went through with it. I'm not a fan of R-rated films anyway, and heavy metal music is not a favorite of mine, so chances were very unlikely I'd watch it. And of course, the story went all over the place. I still don't get it, the Gainax ending didn't help.
Some of the animation was nice, though, I'll give it that and the creativity that was put into it. But most of the time, it wasn't very attractive. It was rather odd, and I noticed different animation styles, which I suppose was intentional. So yeah.

05.22.2012 - 22:44 | moonymonsterDevil's advocate here--CHIKA said she didn't watch this review, but that doesn't mean she hasn't seen Diamanda's reviews in general. I quite like SOME of Diamanda's work, but some of it I don't. I can get where she's coming from either way ^^ Diamanda has a very particular dark style and sometimes reviews really weird and graphic things. If CHIKA prefers the NC, that's probably because he's lighter and picks on old cartoons and movies. Pretty big difference.

06.03.2012 - 19:55 | Maverick3OHKA, I am pretty sure Hagan is a dude but you called him a SHE. Just wanted to point that out as I think that confuses a lot of people and I am guessing why many don't like him.
Doesn't help that his material is very weird and he's not funny... which people like.
If it was some dude who acknowledged he was playing a character of a girl, it'd be funny... but it just comes off as a bad Joker-like character if Joker had ever chose to act womanly.
Even his name is weird, but hey he's not my thing and I much prefer Angry Joe, Nostalgia Critic, E-Rod, and Nostalgia Chick to work alone. And to be fair, I'm not a fan of Bum Reviews or the bum character, so I am not singling Hagan out on my list.
Anyway, I hope next show gets back to awesome, sans crossovers, crossdressers, and crossbows.
Well, actually crossbows would kinda kick ass... just sayin'!
The Critic is a Boondocks fan? Awesome!
Very funny review especially with the CR cameo. I was actually expecting the Critic saying he didn't want CR for being a Brony or something.
