I’ve only seen most of “Dunston Checks In,” because my sister got it from our local library. I’ve first heard of this movie during the previews on my VHS copy of “Power Rangers: The Movie,” and all I know about it is that it stars Charlie from “The Santa Clause,” he befriends a monkey, lives at the Hotel from “Home Alone 2,” and one of the villains is played by Pee-wee Herman. Nowadays, if I want a movie with a monkey in it, I’ll stick with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” thank you very much.
2:15- Someone should really bring these kids to the park and give them a couple of Super Soakers.
If it were possible, I’d give this review 6 stars, but nope; it’s impossible.
6:08- Hey Critic, if you want a film where animals die, I recommend “Cannibal Ferox.” It has PLENTY of animal deaths.
The “monkey giving a lady a massage” scene has put some really disturbing images in my head, and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels the same way.
Paul Reubens’ character reminds me a lot of Christopher Walkin’s role as the mouse exterminator in “Mouse Hunt,” one of my favorite comedies.
10:16- Bruce Wayne: Master of Disguise, this monkey is not.
12:21- Tim Burton should make another movie like this. Maybe for the rumored "Beetlejuice 2"
Like any other slapsticky family films with animals as the main focus, I was lucky to have stayed away from this one as much as possible. Also, I forgot to mention that this film is forgetable except for some of the plot.
I just did a Wikipedia search of this movie, and found out the director of this film also did "Follow That Bird," "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," and "He's Just Not Interested into You."

You know, I have this theory of why some directors will be known for making great movies that everyone enjoys. And then will make a dud. They do it on purpose.
Here is the thing making a GOOD movie takes alot of creativy that requires sometimes even overloading your brain powers. And that can be hard on the mental psyche when your thinking overheats. So I think in order for directors and writers to prevent from having thier thinking hats explode from having to outdo themselves with the next blockbuster hit, they sometimes may have to do a dumbed-down bad movie, that doesn't require as much thinking and plot writing, as a good movie.
Simply put, it gives thier creative juices a chance to relax and recuperate.
However the problem can be if you are known for making a bad movie, depending on the movie itself, it can stigmatize you for life. Some directors need to be careful of that.

I remember watching this movie on VHS tape as a kid... can't recall if I liked it or not but yeah I do recall the monkey movies thing in the 90s with every thing from Spider Monkeys to Chimps being some kid's friend/pet and helping them with whatever problem! You should do a whole month of those movies or animal movies in general! I'd love to see a review of BINGO a movie I loved as a kid but some how still remember to this day for being complete WTF!!! I do recall a lot of these movies because as kid I had the same sick want for violence and death as I do today. Like was I the only one that wanted Dunston to start chewing and mauling the rich woman's face off when he kicked her into that cake!? You know that's what those things do when they tick some one in their "pack" or whatever is being threatened! You seen RotPotA when Cesar bit ole dude's finger off for picking on an old man with Alzheimer's!

02.28.2012 - 23:09 | KamdanYour criticism that “monkeys aren’t funny” won’t do you any good here, because this film doesn’t feature a monkey. It’s an APE. You skipped a whole bunch of funny stuff, like when Jason Alexander screams, “HOLY SHIT!” when he first sees Dunston and there was another bit with Paul Rebuens saying he’s looking for a “Pongo pygmaeus” under a table and a guy thinks he was looking at his wife’s cooch.

02.29.2012 - 04:57 | SetzyTBDoogal was so bad even John Stewart was openly, vocally ashamed of being in it.

02.29.2012 - 09:57 | Flaregun
Jon Stewart is openly, vocally ashamed of *every* movie he's ever been in. And with good reason, I might add.
...Hey, there might actually be an idea there. Why not have NC do a "Jon Stewart Month", where every week he looks at a different one of the terrible, terrible movies Stewart has been in? I mean sure, on The Daily Show Stewart actually is a genius God of comedy and political & social commentary, and Doug would have to acknowledge that, and often, but just about every one of his movies seems like a prime choice for a Nostalgia Critic review yet I don't think he's done one yet. There's a bad review goldmine there just waiting to be tapped.

02.28.2012 - 23:31 | ZodiacWow, short episode this week.
DO POKEMON MOVIES AS COMPENSATION!!!!
I laughed when the lemming dog tried to commit suicide. Seriously, what dog gets so excited that it leaps off a large building?

02.28.2012 - 23:30 | Amay13Wanted to point out Hugo got its material from a book.... but that doesn't really matter :)
this was hilarious. I'd never even heard of this movie, and I will never see it after this( thank you for saving me from that terrible fate!)
I have to agree- Monkeys- and by that extension, Apes, Baboons and Chimps are not funny. For some reason, my brother likes this kind of flick, but I agree 100% with you.

02.28.2012 - 23:37 | Moreno XOf all the silly animal movies the 90s gave us, I have never heard of this at all and I'm glad I didn't.
-
02.29.2012 - 18:04 | Crunchy_FrogErm, chimpanzees *are* apes. Just saying.

02.28.2012 - 23:34 | Moreno XWell, glad you recover from all that beating from a crowd of otakus :P and looks great as always. Too bad we have movies that has to have monkeys in it :/ You think monkey movies aren't funny, you should check a seal movie called "Andre".
Good review NC.

That may be the first time where the father's reason for the lack of a vacation was actually witnessed by the kid as being because of his boss, and the father didn't have to go through that "You promised us a vacation, and I hate you because you have responsibilities" crap that always seems to plague kids' movies.

02.28.2012 - 23:39 | Set AbomineThe whole monkey giving a woman a massage scene looks as if it was directly cribbed from a scene in Red Dwarf's eight season opening miniseries where a baby T-Rex gives Captain Holister a massage with it's tongue (unbeknownst to him until the T-Rex roars)
The difference is that the scene was set up in Red Dwarf in such a way that you could suspend your disbelief in what you were seeing and actually laugh at it whereas here it's just not funny in the slightest way.

02.28.2012 - 23:58 | Raptor RexNot as bad as the let's play review but all in all, this ep is pretty weak. Did anyone watch the media hunter's review? it was told very well.

02.29.2012 - 00:16 | JoeCat
Agree with Raptor. Not a bad review, but not one of your better ones. Still, if you liked it, that's nice and I'm glad you did, but personal opinion this review seemed to lack any real... anything beyond complaining about monkeys/apes. Maybe the lack of comedy in this movie really did zap all the funny out of NC like he said.
Still got a chuckle out of the UHF and Jerry Seinfeld jokes though.
