Why are people defending this movie? It looks like a horrible piece of worthless trash to me. I actually think I lost some IQ points just by watching clips from it in this video. It'd be no different if you defended Flubber. I'd really have to question why. This movie was garbage, as most anime movies/series are.(Looking right at you Bleach, with a really big frown of disgust) No logical person with any degree of standards would really defend this moronic movie.
-
"Looks like"? So, you haven't even seen the film, and yet you call it worthless trash and insult anyone of those who have actually SEEN the movie and enjoyed it as having no taste? Plus, you decided to reply to the first comment on this video, despite your comment being completely unrelated, just so it could appear on the front page.
Eh, I shouldn't be expecting logic or open-mindedness from someone who passes off an entire medium with its own substyles and Genres as Garbage.

02.23.2012 - 22:45 | fuujinPonyo was by far Miyazaki's worst movie. My favorite is Laputa. Ponyo is boring and the entire climax of the film is resolved just because the boy makes a promise. How many promises do you believe a 5 year old to keep?

09.11.2012 - 11:16 | AbsoltheharbingerPonyo is not designed to be a deep, multi-layered deconstruction of the human psyche. It is, fundamentally, a kid's movie. It is written and designed to entertain children. It is written for humour and a happy ending. It may be enjoyed by teenagers and adults, but it was never meant to appeal to them. To dismiss a work as rubbish is easy. To understand why you don't like it, and understand why others might, is a better outlook. If you have a problem with Ponyo, that is fine. But please, Drain, don't bitch about something you know nothing about. The Nostalgia deliberately accentuates negative points for humour, because then he can parody and mock. This doesn't mean that everything he reviews is awful, inane or unwatchable.

What the hell man! You dissing ANIME! You are in for a WORLD of SERIOUS pain! There's a reason the Nostagia critic was cautious with words! Anime fans don't like people dissing their fanbase! As for Bleach I can agree with you. Totally overrated! But ANYTHING of Myazaki's ESPECIALLY Howls Moving Castle, hence the pun, is a masterpiece! As anime's go the best is One Piece no-contest!

As for Howl's Moving Castle... eh. It's a good movie, it really is. I just don't like the changes from the book. That, and... well... Diana Wynne Jones finally got a big movie, and it didn't really bring her much recognition.

I grew up watching One peice, And trust me it is a great anime. But I don't believe it is the best.
I think death note is the best anime because it is a psychological thriller and horror movie, There are so many intricate mind traps that you must see through to understand the story better, These advancements in the story is why i believe that its better. Even picture wise, Death note has better quality and resolution, Not too mention a better plot and characters. But i hold strong to my opinion.

Hand drawn animation is a lost art form. Majority of the background art was hand drawn and rendered with colored pencils. Which can be said for a vast majority of the film which is quite a feat in an increasingly cg world. The director himself animated over 170,000 frames, which can not be said for any animators let alone directors these days. In fact all of the scenes with waves and the sea where hand drawn and animated by him. Or perhaps you are not a fan of art...or animation...regardless it seems you can not enjoy a dream. let alone hard work...where flubber was duplication upon duplication of pre-rendered graphics with a computer doing all the work while using character rigs to actually move the lifeless characters themselves.
by the way where is some of your work to compare to miyazaki's? sure the story is simple, but the art is insane, i'd love to check out some stuff you have done to see just why you can critique it so harshly as to call it "trash"
-
So let me get this straight: you haven't seen the movie (as you said it "looks like"), and you're disregarding the opinions of all the people who HAVE seen it, including the man who reviewed it.
... And you're calling other people illogical?
... I'm sorry, but the only logical conclusion I can come to is that you're either not very smart in the first place or you're a troll trying to annoy people with the stupidity of your statement.
However, considering you're lumping in all anime together as "garbage", ignoring that the different genres and styles of anime are so wide spread that saying "all anime is garbage" is about the same as saying "all movies are garbage" (you could have at least said something like "shonen anime is garbage" to narrow down your umbrella-genre at the very least), I'm pretty confident that that IQ of yours that you were complaining had decreased by watching clips of this movie wasn't very high in the first place. Mostly, I just think that your opinion is based on the superficiality of a dilettante.
My own opinion comes down to this: your views in this regard are baseless and lack validity or substance to ground them, and hence can safely be ignored as just the musings of another internet idiot who forgets to think before their fingers move.
By the way, I don't actually like the movie Ponyo, but at least I've seen it and have concrete reasons for disliking it. Also, I don't like some types of anime, but at least I've been so immersed in it for a huge part of my life that I know what I'm talking about.

Nostalgia critic(Doug) I have to say
I was Surprised when I heard you were gonna review Ponyo and when watched your review of it,
It was really good, I also Haven`t watched the original Japanese yet so it makes me want to watch it thank you.
HOWEVER I felt your constant joke of NOT trying to make a joke about 3.11 felt mean spirited and REALLY uncomfortable to me.
Because I live in japan and when it happened I experienced it, And I`m not saying your a Horrible person(because I Barely know you) Yes you like dark stuff and I respect that, But I Barley laughed or chuckled at those occasion.
so please don`t make anymore jokes like that....

It made me really uncomfortable too;;; I remember at the time close friends of mine were freaking out because they had relatives living either in Japan or in the effected prefecture/s...
but you could tell it was making him feel weird too, (If he didn't at least point it out, someone else would have) and thankfully special guests were there to sort of distract from it

I can understand someone who went through it being terrified of any mention of it, but what's the rest of you lot's excuses?
The whole "you put in our heads" logic is stupid too... as if the mere mention of something is a sacred power. Why do anything? Oh gods, you might make someone think. Well think about it then. It has a lot to tell us... about your oversensitivity, if not the submerged thoughts behind the creation.

02.23.2012 - 14:12 | Daemian LuciferI agree with you completely.I hate it how people kept avoiding(and still are avoiding)earthquake/ tsunami jokes just because it happened in japan.Especially because just a couple of months before that happened,my country was hit by a big earthquake. It wasnt as huge as the one in japan, but my country isnt prepared for earthquakes,so the loss of lives and property was quite substantial in one city. But,because its a small city in a small country, there was no massive media coverage. And no one avoided doing the earthquake jokes afterwards.
Its so hypocritical of people to expect everyone not to make jokes about something that happened to them, but if it happened to others, then its ok.I didnt see any of these guys complain about the jokes in north, despite child predators being a very real thing in the world.
-
02.24.2012 - 01:13 | UchaNekome
Umm insensitive much? I admit though he didn't REALLY joke about it. But the tsunami repeating I think is what they're talking about. No for the people who lived through it they can't laugh about it cause it's TOO SOON. Is the best way to put it. But people have to joke about natural disasters that's how the people deal with pain by trying to make it funny. But I guess it depends on the person whether it's too soon or not to laugh.
-
02.23.2012 - 14:09 | snoofulusUm, he did that "non-joke" because, you know, anyone who knows what happened would be reminded of that when watching this movie today, and a big part of the NC concept is "expressing the thoughts of the viewer".
And, of course, the disaster aside, the way this movie portrays some of these events, is REALLY unintentionally comical at time (tsunami! tsunami!) or just plain weird.
The point is that he can't allow himself to joke about the MOVIE, because of the recent RL events - not that he wants to joke ABOUT THE DISASTER, but can't.
I hope at least this isn't a hard concept to get?
Bottom line, if you can't laugh at a ridiculous movie scene because it reminds you too much of the disaster, then you probably won't like NC drawing attention to it. But there's nothing mean-spirited or tasteless about the review itself.
-
You guys do seem to be impossible to please. If he had made the joke, you would have nailed him. And by pointing out that he didn't want to, you did nail him. He was expressing the discomfort that some of you guys may have watching this movie after the fact. He was not being insensitive.
I did like his concept of having various people bash him for trying to review a popular movie. Maybe he could use the same approach on other movies, like Matilda. That movie is the very essence of a movie loved with nostalgia-glasses on.

Boohoo, I'm an easily offendable person who can't put the past behind me & am even worse if I'm fretting over something that did not effect me personally. If you don't change your ways to be more politically correct to suit my needs, I'll loose all my respect for you, even though I'm less than 1% of your viewership & you don't know I exist.

@Lika Laruku
No.
I'm not easily offendable. And the jokes about the tsunami in this revew didn't offend me personally either.
And I DO live in Japan, and while I wasn't affected by the tsunami, I did go through a major earthquake. But this is not about me.
You should never joke about disasters. It's not about being politically correct, mature, or having a sense of humor; it's about tragedy and death and millions of people affected by it. Many of them are still suffering from that.
You don't joke about tragedies, period.
Otherwise, truly great review. Really loved it. Best one in a long time.

I'm pretty sure there was more than a little sarcasm at work there, seeing as littlekuriboh has essentially made a living out tearing Yu-gi-oh a new one. LK was just playing off of anime fandom's tendency to be a little overzealous: often defending if not venerating mediocre to just plain terrible examples of the medium.

Also, I cant believe that he didn't comment on the fact that the dad was Matt Damon. Also, loved the LittleKuriboh and Spike Spencer cameos. 02.23.2012 - 22:54 | DwaneI agree. Ponyo isn't a bad movie, but it's not that great either, and certainly not among Studio Ghibli's better movies. A lot of doesn't make sense, the human animations are strange (the mother looks like she's goose-stepping), and the ending is lame ("Do you promise to love Ponyo" "Yes" "Balance restored! All problems gone. Woohoo!")
The three things that bother me the most and make it impossible for me to just enjoy are Ponyo's fish form that doesn't look anything like any fish anywhere, the ho hum attitudes of everyone to a taking fish that looks like a baby doll and a violent natural disaster, and the poor blend of detailed science and ridiculous science (not magic; goofy science). There's all that stuff about the Cambrian explosion and the extinct Devonian sea creatures (which were pretty awesome; lucky they didn't meet dunkleosteus) that a 5 year old boy knows all the latin names of, and then the moon just hangs in one spot. They remembered that the moon's gravitational pull draws the tide but forgot that same gravitational pull would cause it to smash into the earth if not for its orbit, which, if present, would cause it and the tide to leave the area in a few hours. The tide goes out, too, ya know.
I really wanted to like this movie. I even bought the blue ray before seeing it, and then I gave it away because the flaws are too big for the good stuff, and there's a LOT of good stuff, to cover up. I can see why other people like it, but it just didn't work for me.
Just a side note, Critic: even though that one woman kept crying "tsunami" the disaster depicted in the movie is a massive tidal wave, not a tsunami, so make all the tidal wave jokes you want.
-
i do love the animation and miyazaki but out of all the miyzaki films this one was the MOST disapointing. i mean nc has a point with it being plain fun and good animation but it was just not his usual flair and story.
I mean princess mononoke and spirited away, howels moving castle, the cat returns... these were all epic and it was like miyazaki got drunk one night and thought he was writing an episode for sponge bob.
-
We need to realize that Miyazaki is getting up there in age. In fact, he wanted to retire around 2005 (when his son made Tales from Earthsea). It's not that he's run out of "mind juice," I just think he's toning it down a bit to make room for his successors. Ponyo was meant for children and families. All the other films had tones that were made for older audiences (not in language or content, but in overall story and depth). Ponyo was simple, elegant, and cute, which is perfect for little kids. Plus this movie was also a challenge for him, because the movie had water in over 75% of it, and each ripple and wave was hand drawn (Ghibli doesn't like using CGI) and that it is an animation feat to get water animated correctly).
On to your comment, The Cat Returns is based off a manga, and Howl's Moving Castle is based off a novel so he didn't just come up with it. Princess Mononoke is based off an old manga he wrote, and it took over 16 years to create the story. All the others (as far as my knowledge goes) are original, but I must ask, why did you leave Nausicaä out of it? That is the most defining aspect of Miyasaki's career, none of the others can compare. Why? Because prior to making these movies and the Nausicaä movie itself, he made an epic, deep, fantastic (and insert all other positive statements here) manga that shows just what he is capable of (beyond the animated film industry). In my opinion, he hasn't turned out one bad film yet, and it's hard to compare something as innocent of a film as Ponyo to something like the psychologically, enviornmentally deep film such as Princess Mononoke. The only problem I have with Ponyo is that is similar to "The Little Mermaid," but other than that, the story is beautiful through a 7 year old's eyes, and the animation is astounding to my 20 year old eyes.
By the way, he shouldn't really be bashing the english adaption of this...I never like how we "americanize it"....The Japanese version is better, the story flows a lot better, though that mother isn't the best mother in world but is the world's worst driver and I never once saw Link do anything!

No it's just that I prefer to see movies and shows in their original languages because at times the english dubs tend to make changes that wasn't in the original version. I'm not against English dubs, I can tolerate it. The problem I have from the Disney dubs of Studio Ghibli is that they tend to get Disney Channel stars to voice the lead kids as of late or get actors that doesn't feel right, like Billy Crystal in Howl's Moving Castle.

-
02.22.2012 - 10:58 | chrisinullapoolI think is not as much the language as the acsent that makes dubs annoying to watch. If the anime shows somone from japan but thay have an american acsent, it kind of ruins the effect.

02.23.2012 - 14:14 | snoofulusOr... maybe... you know... the original is often just better.
Like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, SUCKS in German.
Scrubs and SpongeBob on the other hand... oh, but then Blackadder can only be watched in English, too.
-
I'm siding with you on this one. I too am getting sick of hearing and reading these "purists" making their high and mighty comments about how they're so much better than the rest of us because "they watch the original version" of an anime and somehow this makes them more of an anime fan for doing so. While using that same tired excuse of "well you know, the English dub leaves out certain things that were in the original so it's much better to watch the authentic version" even though when they do this, it makes me question whether they realize that with English dubbing of anime, just like anything else that gets a dub from it's original language is going to have some form of modification to the story, especially so the audience of a different culture can better relate to it. Just because you watch or enjoy the original version doesn't make you a better person than someone who doesn't so knock of the crap with that attitude that you are. Oh and don't try to claim that you don't, when it's clear from the way you either say or write it that you do.
Also, I love Ponyo. THE ENGLISH DUB VERSION. -gasp- And I have to say, that this definitely wasn't one of Doug's better reviews. I have no problem with the not-making-a-joke joke, what really bothered me was how he took certain scenes out of context. Yes he probably had to address and joke about how Fujimoto and Granmamare (the name of the goddess in the English dub, unsure about original version) were able to copulate when she was that gigantic size, but then he completely cuts out the part where she shrinks down to a normal human size when proposes the idea of Ponyo living on land to her husband. Hell, he doesn't even address this later when we see her standing next to Lisa! Or how about when he keeps questioning Lisa's parenting choices? Sure, I will admit that most of them are good points but when he points out that it's not a good idea for her to leave Sôsuke and Ponyo alone at the house during the raging storm, he AGAIN leaves out the scene where Lisa explains that since their house is on top of the hill, it's the highest point in the town so the children would be much safer there.
Okay and while I might be nitpicking here, I personally didn't like the Demon Ponyo gag only because it didn't work in two parts. 1. When Ponyo is using her 'mermaid' powers to be able to return to Sôsuke on land as a human, it's just because she wants ham, it's mainly because she loves Sôsuke and wants to be with him. 2. When she does the "random-headbutting" to the baby to make it happy, it seems he didn't hear the line that the mother said about the baby having a cold, so what Ponyo was doing was using her 'mermaid' powers again to make the infant healthy.
-
Also, as a side note, why are some people being so negative about Sôsuke and Ponyo being in love just because they're five? Okay fine, they might be too young to know what love really is or what it feels like to be in love, but you have to look at it from the perspective of a five year old. At that point in life, love is still a pure and innocent thing. They don't know about all the drama, the heartache, and all the bad things that can go along with being in love. So it's still a beautiful, innocent emotion that they're experiencing. Yeah realistically, their love might not last forever, but then there have been times when people have gone on to marry their childhood friends or sweethearts. And as for the whole, "can you really trust a five year old to keep a promise" issue, I believe you can depending on the child. Yeah some if not most five-year-olds can't keep a promise they make, but if it's something that they really care for and are passionate about, it means the world to them (since a lot of stuff is a big deal when you're five) so they are going to try their hardest to keep that promise and not let anyone down.

You make a few valid points, but it's pretty silly that you're complaining about the Nostalgia Critic slightly misrepresenting parts of the film in order to make jokes. How long have you been watching him? That's what he DOES.
NCs aren't supposed to be serious reviews, they're for fun. That's why intelligent people shouldn't get upset or nitpicky when he reviews movies they like.
(P.S. Subs vs Dubs is a personal choice, so I agree with you. But you should never side with such a rude, judgmental comment, regardless of its motivation.)

02.22.2012 - 04:50 | LighticePonyo's taste of blood probably calls back to Japanese legends where mermaids are in fact bloodthirsty monsters, and always eager to get their claws on some sailors. If you manage to turn the tables on them and devour their flesh, you become almost immortal, but get doomed to live in misery. Little lick of blood to get Ponyo fascinated in surface life is a fun way to mix together Hans Christian Andersen and Japanese folklore.

I know, it sounds ALOT that he says necrophilia, but I figured that doesn't really make sense in context, I mean the big woman doesn't really look like a corpse. Yeah, I suppose the fact shes floating on water kinda, maybe, perhaps, not really is like that... But Dougs comment on the husband liking "larger women" and just generally looking at the scene makes me believe that it's macrophilia he's talking about.
Unless Doug mixed up the terms in which case, how dare you. How dare you not get names of weird internet fetishes right? (I'm being sarcastic here just so you know.)

02.22.2012 - 04:53 | darkness shade sonataI did NOT enjoy this movie, it was not as boring as spirited away, it just looked like a "what if little nemo became human?" scenario gone horribly horribly wrong, it was cute, it was charming, just proof that even the japanese can go bat shit insane

I actually like howls moving castle.I've never actualy read the book and im sure that it is better then the anime movie(witch will give me more to read).I reconginized all the plot errors, like the scarecrow thing, and the unexplained age changimg in the middles, and more then i can explain in this reply but there is redeeming qaulities to it and what plot it has isnt to bad either.I think it's only an annual/bianuaul watch though and it isnt a great master peice but i never really regreted watching it.I also kinda felt I was thrown into a magical world in that movie rather then safly dropped.Well I guess I'll comment more if he ends up reveiwing it becuase of his last comment, but I'd love to hear a counter argument if u have one

Ponyo? Why? There are so much worse Anime out there than Ponyo! (Just ask JesuOtaku)
If you didn't want the Tsunami joke in there - why not skip over that part OR simply review something else!
...And Howl's Moving Castle is awesome, lay off! :D
EDIT: The "Mojara's Mask" moon is so freaking cool, i wish it was in the actual movie!

"If you didn't want the Tsunami joke in there - why not skip over that part"
Because 'that part' makes up about 40% of the film. Seriously, I had the same reaction Doug did when I watched Ponyo. You can't help but feel really uneasy with how the film basically presents a natural disaster, which actually kills real people in real life, as no big deal. It's unfathomable.

02.22.2012 - 05:12 | MygganGotta love americans complaining about the voice acting while refusing to watch it in its original language. Come on, fellows, reading subtitles isn't that difficult.
-
that is because no other language matters to us if we can not understand it. Subtitles are a distraction especially for something as visual as anime. also if you are reading subtitles their voices don't matter matter anymore since you are not paying attention to them now. and yes we have the every right to complain about a bad English dub just as every Japanese speaker has the right to complain about a Japanese dub. Unless you can understand both languages which dub is technically superior does not matter
-
02.22.2012 - 08:39 | Youkyyy
About don't paying attention to voices, i disegree. You don't pay attention to music in a film, but it's there anyway, and it's setting the mood.
And about how "distracting" subtitles are... This movie is aimed at children. The dialogues are really simples. You don't need such a level of focus to read the dialogues of five-years-old talking about ham.
I agree that subtitles are a lesser experience than understanding the language. But dubbing is an even lesser experience in my opinion. Especially when it's badly done.

02.22.2012 - 05:12 | NemesisPrimeThat's right Sora! Wack him good with the keyblade!
I love the review and LK being in it was just awesome!
I've never seen Ponyo but I have seen Spirited Away and that's always been my favorite although I do want to see Howl's moving castle.
I swear if I see NC at Dragon Con or AWA I'll get him to let me tap him with my keyblade because I'm going as Sora!
-
Howls moving castle was fantastic, though i got the sense through it that Christian Bale was the most horrible miscasting ever.
Batman trying to be whimsical, sort of...not really.

02.23.2012 - 10:50 | Zanzoltan
Yesterday, just because I found the curiosity i watched "Spirited away". To me, it was a bad anime episode, wayyyy, wayyyyyyyyyy too long for what is worth...
We already knew the outcome, they didn't explain A LOT of things...and the ending was as stupid as the beggining...so, to me, was a bad movie.
Ponyo was the same. So, to me, Miyasaki is also bad, and doesn't deserve a second chance...
Again I say, TO ME.
Anyhow, great review critic...

10.27.2012 - 12:33 | BluesWhat's there to explain. I actually disliked spirited away for years so I can very much see the negative in that film especially if the focus is on it dragging.
But what is there to explain about a mystical world. That explains it all. you're about to enter a world that isn't ours. There's nothing else to explain about it. The things that happen afterwards makes sense, in the sense of logical progression. I just think some people seem to have devolve the ability to take in fantasy.
-
03.01.2012 - 14:26 | sayzeemI agree. I've seen some of Miyazaki's movies and they've never appealed to me. Maybe it's just because the worlds and characters are so weird. I can see the charm but I just couldn't connect with it.
