07.28.2012 - 00:33 | NostalgiaCriticFan505104UHH! THIS MOVIE MADE ME FEEL SICK! How could a story about a mans hard work and life turn out to be so terrible and infactual? Great review as always critic!
-
02.14.2012 - 20:39 | kenshiGotta be honest, I was getting sick of Star Trek, but after this film... Please god, take us back!

02.14.2012 - 20:33 | musiclover9293nice review as always. Hey, do you think that you could review Beetlejuice. You could choose the movie or the animated series. I really want you to do it because to date it is the only PG movie that throws the F-bomb. Thanks for the consideration and keep up the good work.
-
02.15.2012 - 13:39 | Hardback247Actually, Spaceballs is rated PG, and there is one instance where the F-bomb was dropped. It was in the climax where Dark Helmet noticed the cancellation button was out-of-order.

02.16.2012 - 10:57 | Rusted Ramblings
In the pre-PG-13 era, there were a few instances where PG movies contained the mother of all swears. Nowadays, I believe even PG-13 movies are allotted only one.
This is the best NC review I've seen in awhile. Not because I found it funnier, but because Doug's dissection of the movie was so unbelievably dead on. One of the reasons I enjoy N-Chick videos so much is Lyndsay's (dry) social commentary on the stereotypes and hypocrisies contained within these scripts. Doug does a phenomenal job here with the cliched 90s mistreatment of feminism, progressionism and "dramadies" in general. Robin Williams was particularly apt at making my dry heave during these emotionally forced, sappy tributes to simplicity: "Existentialism and love and piano scores, oh my!!!"
-
02.16.2012 - 15:20 | CartoonFireworks
Actually, according to the MPAA, if you drop the F-bomb three times you get an R rating. Two is fine, but three or over is an R. I don't know why hearing it two times is any better than hearing it three times, but them's the rules.
Also, though this doesn't really have anything to do with anything, you're allowed to show female nudity and get a PG-13 rating, but it gets bumped up to an R if anyone touches each other. Male nudity is an automatic R. Again, I don't know how female naughty bits are worse than male ones -- I guess the MPAA just doesn't like penises. Or gay people, but that's another matter entirely.
-
02.17.2012 - 10:30 | Rusted Ramblings
Interesting. So I can drop TWO F-bombs and show boobs in my movie, and still take my 13-year old cousin into see it. Hm.
When you say female "naughty bits," are you referring strictly to breasts? I have to think that a money shot downstairs would beget an R rating. If that's the case, there is actually gender equality in the standard, since penis = vagina. I've always felt breasts to be more of a watered-down sort of nudity, since it's really only about the nipple these days. PG-13 seems appropriate. Boobs.
-
02.18.2012 - 18:52 | DRBlanton89So, I take it you've never seen Sixteen Candles then... Let me bring you up to speed.
We're talking about a "PG" rated film that had an F-bomb, as well as female nudity! Sure it's an 80's film, but yeah, just pointing out that PG-13's aren't the lowest that can feature this sort of matter.
-
02.15.2012 - 14:54 | WoodenfanBeetlejuice isn't a bad movie, he reviewed a kid's film that dropped an F bomb, but I can't remember what. I'm personally waiting for Troll 2.

I always seemed to prefer Robin William's serious mode of acting compared to his comedic form, to me when he tried to be funny it kinda rubbed me the wrong way, not that he was being offensive or anything but something tells me it was coming off as desperate or masking something.
When you saw him in a dramatic role, he seemed more natural, at ease, like he was really being himself.

Oh dear sweet Christ on a stick this movie is the most hateful pile of ass gravy I've ever seen. Now I remember why I hate Robin Williams. Although Critic, maybe next time you review a bad Robin Williams movie maybe you can also add in some Neon Genesis (GENESIS?!)evangelion jokes? Maybe for a cross-over with Suede or something. Ok, who wants to see the Critic and Suede review "The end of Evangelion"? Who's with me? Later and Fuck this movie. Also today is my Birthday so thanks for reviewing this pile of puke.

I wouldn't hold your breath. I admit, as an anime fan, the stuff is still underground in the lights of the US as far as I'm concerned.
But the only thing I sense out of it is a bunch of chauvinistic and egotistic geeks on the unfriendly side of the fandom jerking off to the satisfaction of making fun of other series and fandoms to satiate off of their semen through the petty world of in geekdom bullying.
End of Evangelion is Hideki Anno's big middle finger to the people that wanted a "proper" end to the TV anime. Yeah it's psychologically taxing, but Evangelion has so much subtle symbolism, and requires empathy, you either get it or you need to research it. Of course, you guys really hate using your brains on entertainment, so I won't take you seriously.

I don't think he will. He never watched or cared for Dragon Ball Z, so he wouldn't do its awfulness justice, nor does he have any interest in trying (he said so himself).
However...a bunch of Channel Awesome members already did an EPIC crossover review of it, and NC even makes a cameo. It's listed under Paw's specials, or you can just search "Dragonball Evolution". It's one of the site's best videos, so if you're a regular viewer you would be remiss to not give it a watch.

No? They can prescribe meds under certain circumstances but they cannot, for example, perform surgery or diagnose a neurological disorder. Psychiatrists are NOT MDs.
On a totally unrelated note....aren't there enough people on this site that waste their time with anime? Sure everyone likes a few movies and maybe one or two major series. NC wouldn't review anime because he doesn't watch it. Does anyone over 30 who isn't a basement dweller?

"A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders."
"Education Required: Doctor of Medicine."
All Psychiatrists go to Medical School; Psychiatry is a medical residency.
-
02.15.2012 - 21:03 | Herald7There are other websites that could have told you that besides Wiki. Just pointing that out. ;)

As someone who starts my psychiatric residency in July I assure you that every psychiatrist is an MD and gets the same medical training as every other MD. In medical school I have had 3 months surgery time, 4 months internal medicine, 1 1/2 months of OBGYN (I've delivered 10 babies), 1 month family, 1 month neurology, 1 month ER, 1 1/2 month psychiatry, 2 months pediatric, 2 years that were just medical lectures and numerous other electives in other specialties. I have to pass boards just like any other medical student.
Any psychiatrist can prescribe any medication they see fit it's just most prefer not to since their specialty covers mental diseases and it's tough to keep up with the entire medical world. I have worked with many psychiatrists who work at the free clinic my med school offers who are willing to write prescriptions for chronic diseases such as hypertensive medications, and hypercholesterol meds. Heck I once saw one write out a prescription for an antibiotic for a kidney infection. The MD applies the same for any doctor, it's just most psychiatrists (like any other specialist) prefer to stay inside their comfort zone. Oh and trust me since neurological disorders often present similar to psychiatric diseases any decent psychiatrist will do their best and rule out neuro disorders in patients that are the least bit suspicious of having them. Just a few months ago I was working in inpatient psychiatry and we ordered the appropriate neuro tests because a patient just seemed to be too young to get dementia and it turned out she had neurosyphilis. Yes, diagnosed by psychiatry not neurology.
What you (and the NC) might be thinking of are psychologists... which are NOT MDs and hence can't prescribe medications except in a couple of states. People get psychiatrists and psychologists confused all the time.

02.14.2012 - 21:04 | PotterfanUh just a mild note to musiclover9293, many PG movies drop the F bomb, you're allowed one use of the word in a PG movie as long as it's in a non sexual manner but there are a lot of PG movies that would have used the word, inlcuding ones like Rent and Cry Baby... just saying, now to watch the review
-
02.14.2012 - 22:56 | BloodySharpieYou're not allowed to say that many curse words at all in a PG movie. The rating you're thinking of is PG-13.

Really? You hate Patch Adams? To tell the truth, I haven't seen it yet, but I AM interested in hearing you thoughts on it.
3:04- I don't know if it's my sence of humor or I'm a disgusting bastard, but I'm actually laughing my @$$ off during this moment. BTW, love your reaction, Doug.
5:07- Tell the same thing to warden of Arkham Asylum. I'm sure he will have the same reaction.
After seeing the part with Patch in pediatrics and in the dark office, I'm starting to see why this film is no "Scrubs."
16:03- =O WTF? ...I expect to see crap like this in films like "Debby Does Dallas," ...but NOT a biopic.
The love interest was really a man? ...Uh, movie, words of wisdom, "YOU ARE NOT "ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER!"
I feel that the kids coming into the courtroom with the clown noses was a big "F**k you" to the letters to Santa from "Miracle on 34th Street."
I never in my wildest dreams thought that there Hollywood made a 90% fictional biopic, and especially one made as late as 199flippin'8. I haven't really known the real Patch Adams, but he seems like a very interesting guy.
Dr. Clown's not a recuring character? Ohhh, I wanted to see him team up with Boffo the Clown from Linkara's show.
-
I saw this movie only once and found it very annoying but very forgettable! Oh, I remember seeing it but couldn't give you a single description of a single scene!
3:04-What the hell is wrong with you!? I'm a sadist but I got standards! XD
5:07- Funny you should mention that since Robin Williams has been rumor or directly tied to every Batman film since the 89 movie in some form or another! Hell there were rumors that he'd play Hugo Strange in The Dark Knight Rises last year!
I never liked Scrubs myself!
16:03- You've seen Debby Does Dallas!?
Hey, that movie looks awesome!!!
Also, there are a lot of rumors still that Lincoln probably was gay... or in a bromance!
No that'll be the remake of Miracle on 34th Street that'll be made before the year 2020!
I actually think I watched a History or Discovery Channel special of him once that was actually entertaining!
I was hoping he'd be like the Critic's Insano... just less a threat and more an annoyance... like the 60s TV Joker!
I know want to see the Critic do a Robin Williams month so he can do Jumonji and/or Junior!

I have to say I've seen the movie, I watched it several times with my. I still enjoy the movie, some of your points are valid...However Hollywood has this annoying habit of destroying the integrity of real life events or even fictional events (Books turned into movies). I think this movie was meant for face value. There were some heart warningly good points and then some...wtf moments to it. It was most certainly corny but it was also pretty decent for the time period it came out in. I'm not defending the movie or tearing it down...it was simply a product of the time, how things were at the time.
And...lets be honest Robin Williams doesn't even seen like a pleasant person to begin with.
-
02.14.2012 - 21:25 | FullofQuestions
UGH, I have seen this movie, and it just disgusts me. I'm fairly forgiving of movies based on true events that don't stick to source material (e.g. Beautiful Mind, Glory, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Sound of Music, The Crucible, etc.) and I even don't mind the remake of Sybil.
But when they take a very important message and do THIS to it, it does get my blood boiling. What makes it hurt especially is that I've seen what the organization called Clown Care does- they are not even doctors, yet, I think they would be more competent as doctors than this depiction of "laughter is the best medicine".
The remake of Sybil, while it went out of its way to portray multiples as freaks and took a ton of liberties with Sybil's story (because, as we know, a mother beating a young girl and forcing her to take enemas is not shocking enough) at least kept the general tone of the story similar to the book. It kept the ideas and messages similar as well.
GAH!

02.15.2012 - 06:41 | Tameel1Oh man, I agree 100% Even as a kid, I knew there was something 'off' about this movie. Something about Patch Adams (the character) just seemed so over the top and kinda creepy. I couldn't believe it was based off a real person (and I was pretty happy to discover the real Patch Adams wasn't the crazy creep that was portrayed in the movie).
I also thought it was gross that none of the movie's proceeds went to the real Patch Adams' charity, and the movie itself didn't even acknowledge the charity in it's credits...
Adams also stated "I hate that movie."[6] "(Robin Williams) made $21 million for four months of pretending to be me, in a very simplistic version, and did not give $10 to my free hospital. Patch Adams, the person, would have, if I had Robin's money, given all $21 million to a free hospital in a country where 80 million cannot get care."[7]
So sad :(

Erm...Critic...I haven't been seeing any of these commercials. As in not one. And it's not like I'm not willing to watch them! In the name of helping you guys out, I'd be willing to put the damn things on a loop. So what gives?
-
While this was a pretty good review, and i had alot of laughs with this one, and no disrespect, but enough with the Midrolls!! They are beyond annoying, and if you have to use them, stop drawing attention to them, that makes it more annoying. 1st time: Funny, 2nd time: okay, 3rd time: repetetive, 4th time: annoying 5th time: knock it off, 6th time: Ahhh!!!
-

Self Gratification? LOL, someone didn't read the comment. And i don't care that he needs more money, stop making jokes about the ads, it's beyond annoying, and it's old, use the ads, just stop drawing attention to them? You know those people who like to bitch about running gags, even though they're spaced out well enough, this is not the case.

I love you doug and your reviews and I feel sorry that you have to watch these history twisting movies. Like the second titanic movie you reviewed it hurt me watching this movie with you. Cause it made me feel bad for the people who are suffering from the twisting and circumcision of History and in this case of a great man!
Just makes me want to puke.
I never saw this movie and because i never even heard of patch until now,and thought this was a comedy. But when I founf out it was based on true events it made me feel unclean watching this review. ( Not your part doug but the film's content)
Keep up the good work sir :)

02.14.2012 - 22:07 | filmguy1987Good review as always Mr. Walker. I do like Good Will Hunting and The Fisher King. Robin Williams is a crapshoot for sure becuase some directors don't know how to use his talents properly. This was a movie that used them wrong, not to meantion taking major artistic license on his life. To Potterfan, Cry-baby and Rent are PG-13. In the 1980's you could get away with one F bomb in a PG film becuase the PG-13 rating didn't come into affect till about 1984 with Red Dawn being credited as the first PG-13 film. Mel Brook's Spaceballs had one F bomb and it was rated PG. But really the MPAA has no real sound system for how they rate a film because some movies are way more R or PG-13 worthy than others. People barely pay attention to ratings anyway since you'll see little kids at movies that aren't kid friendly. The Dark Knight for example was a hard PG-13, the only reason it wasn't rated R was becuase it didn't have a lot of blood and or gore. These days though a PG movie couldn't get away with an F bomb unless it had next to no other curse words in it. Also to musiclover9293, Beetlejuice is a good movie and the tv show wasn't bad either. He's meantioned them both in two different Top 11 videos. And Minion of Yahtzee, Nostalgia Critic wouldn't review Evangelion becuase it's not technically nostalgiac since it wasn't on tv or in movie theaters when he was a kid or teenager and his cutoff year is 2001.

02.14.2012 - 22:11 | luit1247the part about you learn more about patients with a book is the most certain thing in medicine because a pathology imprension to see for yourself and also to be a psychiatrist has to go to medical school and then do 3 years I assure you because I finished medical school 1 year and did tests for be a psychiatrist.
