"Revenge is a dish best served cold"

I have heard that saying growing up and yet as a kid, and yet I never heard it called a "Klingon" saying until years later when I met people who were into the series. Did the creator who thought up the Klingon race, really did use it as part of thier proverbs or is it based on something else entirely from our own ancient history?

    Also.....

5:00 to 5:14 - WHAT. THE HECK. WAS THAT!?!?! O.O Was that Lenord Nimoid seriously doing some groovey funkadelic seventies song about Bilbo Baggins!?!?!
  • Kaibaman
    avatar
Yes that was indeed Leonard Nimoy singing Bilbo Baggins and actual Music Video.

Also O-o Angry Joe Cameo instead of Linkara? CRITIC YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD I READ YOUR BOOK!
  • alexanderthegreat
It's something of a running joke in the series, where the Klingons claimed to have invented commonplace phrases and even literary works in a game of one-upmanship. Star Trek VI had the gem "You have never experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon." It's an extension of Chekhov claiming everything was Russian, from the Garden of Eden to Scotch Whisky.

Or Indian (If you watch Goodness Gracious Me)

It actually makes a lot of sense since the Klingons were originally meant to be a metaphor for Russia in the original Star Trek series.

You mean you've never heard of The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins? It was a song he preformed as part of a short lived 60's variety show. It's probably one of the best examples of something that's so horrible and campy, it's horribly awesome. XD

Check Wikipedia. It will give you the whole background. =)

In response to your first question, yes, the phrase is attributed as a Klingon proverb. It may be by coincidence, picking it up from Earth, or intended as a joke, a la "There is an old Chinese saying /French expression for this".

Nice reference to the tv series "Revenge".

    Third... :D

I just can't believe how little this movie has. We see an anomaly, we see two new tripulants, we see the anomally is a little "Satellite", then after all they just explain something out of the mind of everyone in this universe who's watching Star Trek: "Did we just see a new life-form created?"..."Yeah"...

Big final, nothing explained, and the relevancy of the actual "creation" will never be explained, not that we care anyway. Anyhow, sometimes you just wonder, why in hell did we need Kirk on this mission after all?
He didn't know the ship, he didn't know the mission, he didn't even do something on the entire movie more than failing in every attemp to be a captain. And, what do you know?! The "Former" captain Decker sacrificed himself for the "Greater Good"...

Kirk you fail in this movie. I like your character, but in this movie you were POINTLESS...

PS: excuse my poorly written english. I'm from Argentina, and sometimes some words get mixed up in my head :D.

PS2: BTW, I loved your "CUT!!" scene. Was hillarious and more than one level :D.

If you watch the recent announcements, they had a major virus issue and had to issue an apology for the knock-on effect of the next few videos being late.

Massive fan of Star Trek myself and while I don't enjoy the first one as much as the rest (yes, even 5) I sat down one day, a few years ago, determined to watch this from the point-of-view of someone who had only ever seen the original series back when it was on TV (tho I'll admit I prefer the later series - season 2 of TNG onwards), and you know I actually found myself enjoying it. As a stand alone movie it's not all that it could be, but it was clearly made as the next step up from the series and, when you look at it like that, you can really see that in a lot of ways it works and does exactly what it was meant to. Kinda like the first season of The Next Generation isn't on par with the rest; you can see where the idea on the whole is trying to grow from its, admittedly, campy roots.

Plus, it's success made the rest possible, and from that stand point I find myself incapable of hating it.

Maybe the reason why Aliya brought up her vow of celibracy to Captain Kirk was because she had heard of his reputation for getting romantically involved in alien women and just wanted to set the record straight.

I just like to clarify that I like/love all the Star Trek movies (yes, even the 5th one). Also, I’d never thought I see you review Star Trek 1 almost a year after Linkara reviewed the comic adaptation of it.

0:56- Except the J. J. Abrams movie for the most part.

I was also shock after learning about that Leonard Nimoy Bilbo Baggins music video on YouTube.

Here’s MY reason on why Bones wore that outfit in his first scene: This film was made in the late 70s. (’Nuff said)

For those who don’t know, the relationship between Decker and Ilia was the prototype for the relationship between Riker and Troi in The Next Generation.
Another fun fact: The inhabitants of the machine planet Voyager 6 arrived to is related to The Borg.

I don’t really mind the slow moments, cause I get to hear some good Jerry Goldsmith music. BTW, nice job on reinterpreting that classic scene from Wrath of Kahn.

Great job on that commercial bit. I knew from the marker that one was coming up, but I didn’t think you would actually react to it. Smart move, Mr. Walker.

I actually find this film as an okay mash-up on Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I've only seen bits and pieces myself of the Star Trek movie franchise! The only one I can really say I've seen is the 09 movie which I liked since as a reboot explained the story to me the new audience!
Also, I' glad to see a review after Linkara's review of the old Gold Key Comic adapt!

0:56-My only complaint with that movie was the say as every one else's and that's the lines flares! Use to in Hollywood if a Cameraman or Director got that many flares in a movie they'd be fired!

This is the 1st I'm hearing of this song! Oh he 70s you were so drug fueled! :P

See same point above! (Stayin' Aliiiiiiiiiive!)

I'm sure that's just how she says, "How's it hangin'!?"
    11:14-must be cold in space!
I'd figure as much! A human/super computer/machine hybrid in Star Trek... BORG!!

Yeap, and people like to blame Zack Snyder for over use of Slow-mo in movies! XP
Yes I like the Khan references and reenactments too! Since we aren't getting a praising review on it! Which we've sort of already got! :D

Yeah that commercial bit made me think the video didn't load right t 1st! But it was clever!
    19:02-"All Hail the Great V-GINY!!!"
Just like you said this one is a mash-up of Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey just as the 09 movie is a mash-up of Star Trek and Star Wars!
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
Your right about the Star Trek Star Wars mash-up; they freely admited it on the DVD special features (along with some elements from Wrath of Khan).

  • Beast  - Re: Fake Shemp.... err, Spock.
    avatar
If I recall correctly, Nimoy wasn't originally going to come back until the very last minute. Hence the "Fake Spock". Of course, once Nimoy agreed to come back they had to get rid of the replacement Spock that was already cast. A quick reshoot later and you have the death of NuSpock.
  • Ultrasuperman
u should use that door thing as ur new meme when ever there is a slow moment or a really akward moment

    257th!!!

I've never noticed until now how the odd numbered Star Trek's were incredibly worse than the even numbers until now. DAMNIT. Either way I will always remember the Wrath of Khan fondly as a moment of maturity and disgust as the goo spread from somebody's ear. Either way.. WTF is with the commercials MID-REVIEW? If I wanted to see that BS interrupt what I was watching I'd pay more attention during an NFL game. Time to spork my eyes out... thanks!

It's damn hard to believe that they dusted Star Trek off for a major motion picture because Star Wars made a crapload of cash. And then not only tossed out any of the color seen in the original Star Trek show, by going with these new fugly pajama costumes. But then they completely ignored why Star Wars was such a huge thing and making so much money... by instead of cribbing from Star Wars, they cribbed from 2001.

Funny how the Star Trek reboot a few years back actually makes up for that fact by outright lifting plot devices and story elements directly from Star Wars. Like the destruction of Alderaan... err, I mean Vulcan.

This and the last Next Gen movie I never saw. Really because the first I have so much bad stuff about. I have it tape but never as my sister found a whole box set of original cast movies. Watching this video and hearing it from linkara and others makes me dread watching it. It looks as boring as it seems. Last Next Gen I heard was bad but I don't think it as boring as this one but I got it on dvd. I am looking forward to the rest of Star Trek month. Live Long and Prosper.
  • Beast  - Star Trek: Clone Wars...

Star Trek Nemesis isn't that bad to be honest.

Yes, it's the one even numbered Star Trek film that isn't all that great. But there's always once exception to that rule. Like Star Trek III: The Search For Spock is pretty much as good as the other even numbered films.
  • Supermutant2099
    avatar
Again I never seen nemesis and do have it on dvd. Actually the only one I have on dvd. Rest I have on tape. Never really gotten around to upgrade. I liked search for spoke too and didn't like the fourth one. The whole thing with wales was sort of weird too and spock in that movie man.
  • Mummra4ever
Search for spock is an ok film but I think star trek 4 is better than that one. It's just more fun to watch because it's meant to be a fun light hearted adventure overall. Because they wanted to do a movie that was just fun after seeing Spock and Kirk's son david die and losing the enterprise in the previous two films. There was nothing wrong with Spock in that movie I thought he got some good developmemt in that movie with being more accepting of his human side compared to how he was in the original series.

    Awesome vid, Critic.

I really hope the mid-review commercials were for this review only. If they become a regular thing, it'll be really annoying... then I might as well be watching real TV. And real TV sucks.

The setup for the commercial break was pretty hilarious, though.

I agree this movie was boring as hell. I can't ever sit through it without falling asleep. I just wanted to put forward that at around the time this film was made, there never was going to be a film. They were instead going to make a second tv series called Star Trek Warp 2 or something similar. this script was to be the pilot episode. when word came in at the success of Star Wars, all of a sudden they were throwing money at Roddenberry to make a film.

So I can only imagine that with the rushed production to take what they had already on film and start redressing it for big production they had a lot of time to kill in between, so we got all these space gloryshots of everything.

Also I loved the Khan re-enactment scene. that was absolute gold. CUUUUUUUTT! CUUUUUUUTTT!!!

Oooh I can't wait for the Star Trek V review. That movie is so painful.

I'm surprised there weren't more cameos though.
  • TheTodd  - Don't Review Star Trek
What the Doug Walker Nostalgia Critic? Why do you think you can successfully review a "On Par With Ninja Par With Ninja Turtles" Franchise that is Star Trek? You're constructive criticism is feeble. This film was beyond you and your ego. It not being better than other Star Trek films doesn't compare to "your" film such as "Kickassia".
  • Mad-Eye Louie  - What in the name of GRAMMAR?
    avatar
Yeah, because it's TOTALLY fair to compare a low budget indie spoof film with an overbudget slow monstrosity.

Besides, I highly doubt he'd cancel an entire months' worth of reviews just because of a few trolls.

Even die-hard fans have a hard time saying they like this film. I'm looking forward to his review of Wrath of Khan.
  • THOOM
    avatar
Oh, Mad...Doug is probably doing Star Trek 3 The Search For Spock next. He said he is only doing the odd numbered Treks, aka "the "bad" ones. I have never seen three, so I don't know if it is bad or not, but he certainly can't be doing Wrath of Khan. That was considered a good movie.

I also co-sign with Mad and Yeah Whatever, when I tell The Todd to take a long walk off a short pier. This movie is not sacred and Trekkies and Trekkers do indeed admit it's boring and pointless.
  • SpeedyEric

Star Trek 3 is actually pretty good in my book. Also, it stars Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon commander/villain.
  • MisterCrim
    avatar
Search for Spock isn't "bad" per se, but it has a lot of bullshit logic moments and compared to Wrath of Kahn (apparently, haven't seen it. It's a curse for me. I can never seem to finish more than a half hour of Wrath of Khan or Taxi Driver because of someone's stupid bullshit.) and Star Trek 4 (Nuclear Wessels FTW) it's not that fantastic.
  • redhairsword
    avatar
LINKARA doesn't even like this film, and he's about as die-hard a Star Trek fan as you can get.
  • Yeahwhatever
I am assuming that your incredibly stupid post was some kind of a childish, trolling insult, directed at Doug Walker.

I say, "assuming" because your post is so incomprehensible and makes so little sense in actual, plain, readable, coherent English, that I actually have no idea what in the fuck that you're even talking about. No part of that post made any readable sense.

....And Kickassia was awesome. Shut up.

This review was worth it just for the CUT! scenes. The shots just go on and on and on....make it stop! I especially love the little in joke there.
