08.29.2011 - 15:15 | bassbaitWhile I agree with 2001 (greatest film EVER MADE, by a long shot), I disagree on Star Wars - the original trilogy is NOT Science Fiction, it's Science Fantasy. It's not even SET in the future, which immediately tells you "don't give a crap about realism, just watch the movies".
Prequels failed because they lacked realism in characters, logic, and the look of the films. The original trilogy had realistic characters, made SENSE in story context (motivations, plot, dialogue, etc), and LOOKED good.
The original Star Wars trilogy deserves all of the praise it gets because it was GOOD. It's like saying you can't enjoy Toy Story because it's unrealistic. OF COURSE IT IS, that doesn't change how well made the films are.

You know, if you want a better prequel experience, read some comics and novels that take place during the time line. Also watch Star Wars: Clone Wars (not Star Wars: The Clone Wars), an animated mini-series that aired on Cartoon Network before Revenge of the Sith came out. Oh god that was godly and awesome. General Grievous fighting like... five Jedi at once and nearly winning. And Durge... Never forget Durge. Even Anakin was enjoyable.
-
08.29.2011 - 16:05 | sereiaThat's completely opposite for me. Although I'm not particularly a fan of the Star Wars films, I'd watch them any day over 2001: A Space Odyssey. Cuz at least they were entertaining, 2001 was boring as fuck (Did we really need to see a 7 minute long span shot of a spaceship?)and I'm not even a person that needs constant action on the screen to keep me entertained. They only part I enjoyed was the HAL 9000 part, and even that was only 10 minutes long. I never realized how much I enjoyed sound in film until I saw that movie.
I get why people like it, its artsy and science fictiony and what not, but that doesn't stop it from being as boring as watching grass grow.
-
08.29.2011 - 18:18 | The Battousai
To clarify: the section of the movie with HAL in it (the Jupiter Mission) takes up nearly an hour of the run-time. More than half of that includes HAL either on-screen or in the back of your mind (knowing that he can see and hear everything going on in the ship).
You may want to reconsider your position regarding the sound (which includes music) in the film, because it uses every single thing to its advantage in both creating atmosphere and outlining unspoken themes. For example, the fact your can only hear Dave or Frank breathing when out of the ship both focuses your attention on what's happening and creates suspense - particularly in the second instance of this.
The film masterfully uses both sound and music in order to help tell the story. Having a slow pace allows the viewer to take in everything without being rushed, and the fact that the movie doesn't hand you its themes on a silver platter shows that it respects its audience.
I'll be the last to say it's easy to understand - particularly after only one, or even two viewings - but that isn't reason to dismiss it.
-
08.30.2011 - 06:21 | sereiaI think when I said 10 minutes long I was thinking of how much HAL was actually on screen. I realized the Jupiter mission was long, especially when they were "jogging" and fixing their equipment.
Trust me I understand that this film was beautifully shot, the effects were groundbreaking, and it pretty much set the ground work for science fiction films. In terms of cinematography and production this film was a masterpiece, that said it's still really boring. I suppose I was expecting more, I went in it expecting to see a movie about the crew and the HAL 9000, and how little in proportion to the rest of the film HAL had to do with it was probably disappointing to me.
This film did show me how much people's film tastes can vary. Maybe I could try giving it another viewing, but it will be really hard not to skip some parts.
ANYWAYS we've gone off topic

08.29.2011 - 23:37 | leon101Oh...my...GOD! You are an alien from planet X! Movies DON'T have to realistic! That's the best fucking part!
-
08.30.2011 - 02:43 | JDB15
Star Wars is not realistic?!?! Holy crap, I thought it was a documentary. *facepalm* I'm not gonna point out on how stupid to expect realism in a movie franchise who had a guy shoot lightning out of his fingers and another using powers to choke someone without touching him (ie, science FICTION/FANTASY) or in a franchise that the main character had cross a bridge and take a literal leap of faith, surviving falling out of a plane a hundred or so feet in the air using an inflatable raft (and the infamous surviving an atom bomb blast by hiding in a fridge).
-
08.30.2011 - 12:41 | AndrewDeLong
Ah you guys. You never disappoint. I'm not saying that I NEED realism in my sci-fi movies. Hell, I'm as guilty as the next person for enjoying sound in space, lightning fingers, or impossible light sabers....well....things LIKE those anyway. My cutoff is where a supposedly sci-fi movie/series UTTERLY FAILS to give even a hint of realism. This was Star Wars. To the bitter end.
I liked Star Trek because, as out there as it was, it at leaste made a vague ATTEMPT to follow some scientific logic, even if it was pushed to its logistical limits. It still tried.
I like Stargate (all of it, Universe included) because it is able to maintain the fantastical while staying within the realm of "yeah, that seems plausible."
I mean shit, even some crap sci-fi series (First Wave, Sliders, etc...) made better attempts at even minor realism than Star Wars.
My only exception is Doctor Who. But then again, that series sets itself up in a Universe where one is not expected to take science seriously, so the complete bat-shit craziness of it all...works.
Star Wars expected you to take it seriously, and yet it failed to show any attempt at maintaining a sci-fi attitude.
The entire point of sci-fi, mind you, is to take what seems possible or plausible in science as we know it, and then extend that to its very limits in order to tell a story in ways most fantastic. For me, Star Wars utterly failed at this. Tack onto that the fact that I wasn't exactly impressed with the story, and you have a movie series that's DOA when it reaches mine eyes.
Now, you can continue to flame me like rabid little fanboys, or you can act like adults and respect my...MY....opinion on the matter.
Your choice.
-
09.04.2011 - 23:41 | MartianMan
Dude, I respect your opinion, but I think your main problem with Star Wars is that you think it is science fiction. What's the problem with with that? It isn't; it's /science fantasy/. Science fantasy is when you take a fantasy story and put it in a science fiction setting. Science Fantasy's basic premise is "hey, what if Lord of the Rings was in SPACE?"
Asking for concrete science is just unreasonable.
-
09.06.2011 - 14:49 | AndrewDeLong
Again, looking at what I DO like, you should be wise enough to know that I'm not asking for "concrete science." I'm asking for a vague attempt.
Mine is a simple want: If it pretends to have science in it, then please, provide SOMETHING that shows an ounce of realism.
I'm not asking for the world, just an attempt akin to a 1st grader trying to color inside the lines. If a movie can't even do that much, then it's simply not worth anything to me. Time, money, effort to watch it...ANYTHING.
-
04.07.2012 - 08:56 | snoofulus"I'm asking for a vague attempt."
Aaaand, you're still not getting it.
There isn't SUPPOSED to be any "vague attempt" - it's literally a fantasy story in space.
It doesn't pretend to have science in it - obviously, all the technology has been constructed by in-universe science, but it's merely used as a plot device and setting.
The science that constructed it never comes up as even a hint of a topic.
"just an attempt akin to a 1st grader trying to color inside the lines."
A hilarious analogy you've come up with there, considering that the kid might just want to draw a picture in black and white °_°
Very often, when you've got an original picture consisting of nothing but pencil lines and a version with color filled in, the first ends up looking better in comparison.
"then it's simply not worth anything to me"
What a pretentious and ignorant attitude.
Per definition, there's a difference between people with "high standards" and rationality, and snobs - the latter group always tries too hard to *appear* smart and demanding, but ends up looking idiotic due to the gaping fallacies in their reasoning.
So congratulations.

Doug, please bring some of your crazy Chicago rain over here in Iowa. Espically North Iowa because our farmers need it for those poor thirsty little corn fields. :(
But you can keep your hail.
Also, I watched and loved "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" although I am disappointed that Doug won't be reviewing it as the NC he does have some good points. Its harder to poke fun at a movie that pokes fun at itself and breaks the fourth wall from time to time. But I do hope that somehow it does catch the eye of one of the other reviewers on this site and they do a review of it. Or at least a positive review that takes a look back at why its one of the best and funniest B-movies around.

I third this! I really, really, REALLY hate Episode II, but Episode I (despite its inherent flaws) was entertaining, and Episode III... (Activates High Strength Flame Shield) is my favorite Star Wars movie. DON'T KILL ME! I don't know, as I grow older, I find things wrong in all the movies, but I think Revenge of the Sith is the most interesting, and has, hands down, the BEST lightsaber fight in the entire series. Who knows, maybe I'm just an idiot with no taste in movies.

agreed, the prequel fights are more visually impressive, but i think the original fights have more drama behind them, sometimes no matter how spectacular something looks, if it's an effects heavy movie, chances are your reaction will be "Poof. More CGI. Yay." Not as much actually happened, but I was way more psyched about the fight in Return of the Jedi than anything in the prequels.

I'm in that camp that didn't mind the Prequels when they came out, but grew to despise them as I grew older. The more I think about it, the more I hate everything that the Jedi were turned into by those movies that they weren't in the prequels - what was once a loosely-affiliated order of space knights suddenly became a creepy religion with morons at the helm that brainwashed children. Progress?

Disagree. Best Lightsaber duel, the most natural looking one, is in Return of the Jedi.
The ones in the Prequels are pretty, but way over choreographed. They look more like a dance than a fight. Luke and Vader toying with one another, Luke going off on him when he finally loses his shit? That's more like combat.

Yeah I agree with the Lightsaber fights at least, in the original trilogy it seemed like everyone was going slow so Vader could keep up
But imo the most annoying things have happened are not even the prequels, but the changes to the series Lucas added in. Greedo shooting first...kinda lame, young Anakin in at the end of episode 6 kinda seemed to take away the whole redemption thing that Vader/Skywalker had JUST gone through. And now I heard they're giving Vader another line in the last movie, apparently right before he throws the Emperor off the railing.

Are Jajar Bings (don't care how he is supposed to be spelled anyway) and Hayden Christensen as Anikin Skywalker.
I mean: I'm sorry, but was that extremely annoying "comedic relief" character really neccessary in Episode 1, a movie that already has tons of comedy with comedic villains like the trade guild guys ?
And what utter fail it was to cast Hayden Christensen as Anikin Skywalker, dear lord, he isn't only almost as annoying as Jajar Bings, no he also CANNOT ACT TO SAVE HIS FUCKING LIFE like . . . AT ALL !
And that fact became painfully obvious in scenes he had to share with Ewan McGregor and Natali Portman, two really top-notch Hollywood actors ! Christensen just completely paled compared to them and it was downright torturous to witness !
And when he tried to act all "grim and griddy" in Episode 3, he just didn't cut it AT ALL imho . . . it just came of as pretentious teenage emo "no one understands me" bullshit that cannot be taken seriously at all !
And he delivered the 1 line in episode 2 that forever killed Darth Vader - the most badass movie villain of all time - for me:
*Annoying emo teenage voice*:
"I hate sand, it's everywhere."
And I know that some of you will point out that Christensen is perfect for the role because Anikin Skywalker is supposed to be an obnoxious, whiney, pretentious teenage emo kid, but that's just not how I expectet Anikin Skywalker to be, especially not in the last years before he turned into the badass that is Darth Vader !
Long rant, sorry for that, anyway: Other than that, I actually like all 3 prequel movies, it's just that The Empire Strikes Back will probably always be my favorite single movie out of any movie trilogy (and I'm not really too big of a Starwars fan) !
Tl dr: Jajar Bings and Christensen ruined the otherwise great prequel trilogy for me, so The Empire Strikes Back will always outshine those movies imho.
-
08.29.2011 - 01:30 | 10.0.0.1I found them to be alright movies myself, if they were just a trilogy of scifi movies they would not have been hated on so much. The trouble is they were Star Wars movies, when you put the premise forward that this is the origin of Darth Vader and the empire the hardcore fans get an image in their head so epicly over the top no movie could ever live up to it.

Personally I think that the StarWars prequels were pretty decent compared to the original
Episode 1 was definitely the weakest of the entire saga, but it was still a fun movie to watch.
Episode 2 was in my opinion almost on equal terms with the original trilogy, and as far as I'm concerned, Episode 3 was actually SUPERIOR to the original saga.
Yes I said it! StarWars Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith is the BEST Star Wars movie out there!
And I'm willing to maim anyone to defend my opinion!
-
08.29.2011 - 08:01 | KirinetBefore you guys fight about the prequels, you should check RedLetterMedia's review of it.
Doug mentioned it and it's very long and points out everything wrong about the prequels. It's also incredibly hilarious, so if you have some time to burn, it's worth a watch.
-
People who mention the Red Letter Media reviews make me laugh. I've seen them, they haven't changed my mind about the prequels. At all. Most of his complaints about the prequels can be applied to the original trilogy as well. Silly dialogue, crappy acting, cheesy special effects, massive plot holes, etc. And ooh, he has rape jokes. Awesome.
Come up with your own arguments instead of pointing to that pathetic man's reviews. It's pathetic.

Wow. There's no accounting for taste I suppose.
The only thing the prequels have over the original trilogy is a bigger budget which allows for better effects. But, Lucas took that and CG'd the hell out of everything and made a sterile and bland mess of a trilogy.
There's no soul, no drama, the acting is poor thanks to his inept direction (all actors in this give career worst performances with the exception of the Emporer...that guy had a blast chewing the scenery and being evil as hell, and his is the only half decent performance of the bunch because it has a little life), they are UNGODLY boring and considering it was supposed to show us the tragic corruption of Anakin to the dark side, Lucas chose to show him as nothing but a whiny little turd with no positive character development at all. Where was his close relationship with Obi Wan? They throw in 2 minutes or so of them talking about experiences they had off screen...wow, nicely done Lucas.
The best fight scene of the prequel trilogy is the fight against Darth Maul from Phantom Meanace, it was flashy, but not too over the top and had an excellent score. The final battle between Obi Wan and Anakin from Part 3 is terrible...all drama and tension is lost because Lucas substituted OTT special effects for an epic feeling, it essentially becomes a video game cut scene and carries none of the weight or impact it should because of it. Impressive visually - though you're constantly reminded how fake it all is due to all the CGI - but completely devoid of feeling or soul.
The original trilogy had better acting, better directing (Lucas has gotten very lazy in his old age), better characters, better story, and even with their old fashioned effects they don't look as dated as the prequels do. And I say this not as a rabid Star Wars fanboy (I don't actually own the original trilogy in any form) but as someone who recognises quality film making over extended toy commercials and hastily thrown together fan service.

I personally don't know why everyone bashes Sonic X so much. I thought it was really funny. Kind of a Sonic-themed Roger Rabbit. Of course, I thought Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was hilarious, so what do I know?
I also noticed that the Adventures of Mark Twain wasn't mentioned here, so hopefully it's still possible. That thing terrified me as a kid and still does today. I'd like to see your thoughts on it.

I agree that Sonic X wasn't terrible. But my main problem with it, and everyone else's main problem, was the human character Chris. GOD, I hated him so much! I don't know anyone who likes him!
Uh, anyway... Critic, I think the reason people want you to review the Toaster movie is the same reason they want you to review Watership Down: It's VERY dark. Unlike Watership, Toaster was actually MADE with kids in mind. Watership Down just suffered from bad advertising because of the mindset that all animated films are for kids. The Brave Little Toaster really was for children, and it's depressing as fuck.
On a side note, he won't review The Goofy Movie... Think he will review An EXTREMELY Goofy Movie? XD

As for Star Wars prequels I liked them too, even Jar Jar I thought was funny but I see why he gets people angry since it's hard to enjoy the action while he is bumbling around. I've seen the brave little toaster and cats don't dance too. Good movies.

I liked Episode I when I was a kid. As I got older, I started to realize more and more how much it was just that I wanted to like it so badly that I managed to fool myself to think I did. I did enjoy it though, especially the fight scenes, but it was still a disappointment.
Episode II left me completely cold. Unless you count my burning rage toward George Lucas. That movie was a torture to watch. Like watching every single positive memory I had from my childhood's favourite movies twisted and perverted into something horrible. Only morbid curiosity and my lingering shreds of hope kept me in that theatre. I haven't watched it ever since and I don't plan to do that in the future either. And I still remember it all too well.
As for the other people's comments about best lightsaber fight: I'm going to say right away, that Obi-Wan vs. Anakin from Episode III was the worst lightsaber fight in the history of Star Wars, including the Extended Universe. Hell, including most fan-made stuff too. It was the most boring action scene I have ever seen and it was supposed to be the most dramatic moment in the whole saga.
Okay, I know, it's my opinion and if you enjoyed it, good for you. But good God, I can't, I really can't. It had no depth at all and the whole lava thing made it completely ridiculous rather than more intense. The fighting wasn't half as impressive as in the Qui-Gon&Obi-Wan vs. Maul fight either. From the prequels, the latter is still my favourite.
The best lightsaber fight of the whole series? I'm going with JetstreamGW. Luke vs. Vader in RotJ was the not only visually captivating but also believable and most importantly: emotionally powerful. That was the point the whole series was building up to and it delivered. It was a worthy climax.
Okay, I get way too excited about this subject. I'd better just shut up now.

Well, there's also the fairly obscure 'Sonic the Movie', which was really just two episodes of a Japanese anime that never actually went beyond those two episodes, spliced together. That was released in 1996, if I remember correctly, around the time the Dreamcast was released. I actually have it on VHS.
However, the most anyone would be able to make fun of would be the voices, Knuckles being called a mole, random flying Knuckles, Princess Sera, the Old Man, and Sonic's 'favorite clothes', which were hideous and looked like they belonged in the 60's or 70's.
Also, yes Doug, the Sonic fanbase is HUGE. However, they're are alot of sub-fanbases, like for the Games, US Comics, the UK Comics, the SatAM cartoon, the AoStH cartoon, Sonic X, and Sonic Underground. The Sonic Fanbase also has a bad reputation for being filled with feral fanboys/girls ready to flame anyone who says anything bad about the series they love, even amongst other Sonic fanbases. Some of them are also leftovers from the Nintendo/Sega 'wars' who are ready to flame anything Mario or Nintendo related.
However, thankfully everyone's not like that. Like me, I love Sonic the Hedgehog, but I'll admit that there is some crappy stuff put out for him. I grew up with both Sonic and Mario, so I never took a side back in the old days.

08.29.2011 - 17:38 | NitrinoxusYeah, 4Kids is notorious for its awful anime dubs. They're the reason I stopped paying attention to the Pokémon films and TV show.
And actually, I found myself enjoying the Star Wars prequels, too. Did they have problems? Yeah. Did it get kinda lame? Of course. But for what I got, I thought they were pretty good.
Episode I, I think, was the worst out of the three; it didn't seem very well paced, and the portions of the film that dealt with politics were REALLY dull. But the effects were good, the action was good, and I really enjoy seeing all of these creatures that Lucas created. So... yeah, I liked them.
-
08.29.2011 - 18:33 | Fangheart
My opinion on Star Wars is a lot like Doug's a opinion on Spider-Man; I like the prequels just as much as I like the original trilogy. which is actually kinda "meh". I mean, I do really like Sci-fi (Mass Effect has to be like one of my most FAVORITE games in the world) but I'm not really a fan of star wars. the prequels, I agree, it's tough to follow what the hell is going on, but the originals just don't appeal to me like they do other people.
I think there's only one Sonic Movie, the old anime one. that was.......yeah, that was weird. it was just...weird. and Sonic X is just another name on the overflowing list of animes that have been abominationized by the dumbass evil that is 4kids.
I actually remember all the Braver little toasters being good......of course, I was born in '90, so I was under 10 years old for the entire decade, so I might not have known any better.
also, I couldn't agree more about the Spiderman cartoon. it was animated HORRIBLY, and the dialog sounded like it was literately ripped straight out of the comic book. no, I mean LITERALLY! like, Spider man would never shut the fuck up with the inner dialogs, or he would be talking right in the middle of a frick'n action sequence. in comics, it's ok to put a speech bubble or two when the character is doing an action pose or even a whole action sequence, but in an animated MOVING cartoon that just looks and sounds stupid. plus what they were actually saying was always way too cheesy to tale seriously.

My guess is Sonic Underground might have escaped his notice since it seemed he may not know it existed. *shrugs* And yeah Sonic X itself is fine its the 4Kids dub that sucks and not worth a Critic review.
Also I like the Star Wars Prequels myself. I do know why some people have issue with them, but I find myself having more issue with the issues people have issues with. I feel... some are just pathetic and some fans are putting the original triology on such a pedestal, they can't see both trilogies share similar flaws.

4Kids has a LOT to answer for. A huge fucking lot. In comparison to the most evil entity in this universe that I know of - the Twilight books - it comes fairly close. The 4kids execs will BURN in some kind of hell or tartarus with Stephanie Meyer, I know that much. I will personally escort them down the Hell Elevator if needs be.
And I'll add myself to possible flame material here by backing you up on the Star Wars prequels. Despite the flaws, I did enjoy the Phantom Menace and it completely re-opened the Star Wars expanded universe of the Old Republic, which is probably one of the greater contributions to science-fiction from the 20th century. I thought a lot of the plot and ideas of II and III OUTSIDE the Anakin-Padme subplot were well-thought out, very interesting, tied in with the sequel's continuity and were done very well. In fact I thought the Clone Wars plot was ingenious and was a brilliant way of explaining how the empire gained such a huge battle force that it could take down the jedi temple. And I liked the special effects. I have now stamped a huge target on my head.
There is one thing that holds me up though, and this is almost a breaking point for me: I hated Anakin in II and III. Phantom Menace I could manage, but characterisation, writing and that whole padme plot in II and III were cliche, horribly done, pathetic and essentially made him up as a spoilt emo brat who needed to grow the fuck up and stop whining and snivelling. And the "Love Makes You Evil" reason for him becoming Darth Vader was so pathetic and badly done that it almost made me scream. I've used the descriptive terms "pathetic" and "badly done" far too many times... I'm going to draw another Twilight reference here - because I always do whenever I have to compare something to pure evil - but Stephanie Meyer could have written his character and it would have been exactly the same. And that is the lowest insult I can muster.

Episode II is the worst of the prequels, even though (or perhaps because) it had the potential to be the best.
Let's look at the plot as the film starts off: an attempt is made on a senator's life, and two Jedi are sent to investigate and protect her. The investigation quickly turns up a mysterious line of clues leading across the galaxy to a conspiracy against the government.
This thing was going to be basically a film noir detective story IN SPACE. And then the romance got shoehorned in, and distended the rest of the movie to make it fit. Wasted a perfectly good plot. Could have been amazing.

I'm with you too. I liked the prequels. the first one i don't like the most but i like it because of all the things i can make fun of. and I like looking at the movies like "what were the creators trying to do with these movies." I can admit that the movies have flaws, and that the movies can be done better. oh crap i forgot to activate my flame shield ahhhhhh- *beep* *static*
-
08.30.2011 - 18:58 | jayoNo, I enjoyed the prequels, too! Actually, they were great! None of them, not even that Clone Wars movie, come anywhere near the level of bad that was the Holiday Special that he needs to review them! We knew they were coming, we know you're wishin' that they'd go away! But the SW prequels are here and they're here to stay!!
Anyway, most of those other films, it's understandable, and Sonic X isn't really bad that he'd have to do it! As for Ninja Turtles 3, I was hoping he'd suffer through it, but he's right, the Nerd pretty much took care of that one, quite well!

I enjoyed the prequels well enough too. Actually one of my favorite memories stems from seeing the late showing of episode one with my mom in theaters. It was the first time I'd ever been allowed to stay up past midnight. I also remember how spontaneous it was. Mom and I had run out to do something totally unrelated and as we were driving by the theater mom was suddenly like "Hey, let's go to a movie."

12.07.2011 - 05:31 | NostalgiaTraitorI don't know. If you ask me, there was stuff to hate about Sonic X besides the 4kids dub.
And yes, I did not hate the Star wars prequels. People act as if they didn't need to happen but they did. Why title your movies 4, 5 and 6 if you're never gonna make 1, 2 and 3?
-

I'm a big fan of Star Wars overall. I do not think the prequels are better or worse than the original trilogy - just different. Yes, of course they have flaws and problems and plotholes and some bad acting, etcetera etcetera - but hey, same goes with the original trilogy.
My favorite Star Wars movie IS Episode 1 - and no whining old-school fanboy critic of the original trilogy in the entire world could ever make me change my opinion. I'm not dumb for having this opinion - it just means I am daring enough to think for myself and not go with the flow.

Now Doug, I don't want you to get mad, but I have some suggestions for you. Now I'm sure you've seen some of these suggestions from other lists, but I've tried to get a few good and bad (some REALLY bad) movies that were all theatrically released.
1. DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp
2. Big Green (Guttenburg plays a sheriff with a southern accent. Yes, it is hilariously bad).
3. The Chipmunk Adventure
4. Big
5. Small Soldiers
6. Wild, Wild West
7. Mchale's Navy (Bruce Campbell, Tim Curry, and unfortunately Tom Arnold)
8. Dunston Checks In
9. An American Tale: Fievel Goes West
10. First Kid

I don't actually remember much of the Brave Little Toaster... I'm sure I saw it at some point, but I was probably REALLY young.
I do, however, remember one TINY detail about the Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars. All I remember was that there was a hearing aid from Mars. That's the extent of my memory. But based off of that tidbit alone, I'd assume that movie is fit for reviewing.
-
08.29.2011 - 07:47 | ladydiskette
The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars sounds like a sequel MikeJ could review for "Shameful Sequels".
No offense but it feels like Deja Vu here, like Linkara's 15 Comics I will Never Review...but as anyone who has watched that one knows how it ended up soon afterwards. Would that mean the NC will crack down from the pressure and review at least ONE of these for good measure?
Or will he stay true to his word?

I'm glad NC won't do them because it would just annoy me again. That said... I do think it's strange that he refuses to review some shows/movies because he liked them. He did Duck Tales, didn't he?
-
08.29.2011 - 01:45 | Kimarous
I think it's less that he refuses to review them "just" because he liked them, but rather that he liked them enough to not see anything worth joking about. I'm sure we all have films we like where we could easily poke fun at, while others just don't have the right stuff for a comedic review.
To use personal examples, I really like "Kingdom of Heaven". Could I make jokes about it? Easily. I also really like "There Will Be Blood". Now that's just FULL of jokes like... uh... um... milkshake?

Wow, looks like there will not be an episode this Tuesday. Oh well. Thanks for the info.
-Glad you hate the 90s Spider-Man because it is really bad, epecially since Spidey never punched any one. I recommend Spectacular Spider-Man because it's more entertaining, better characters, and awesome fight scenes. Plus, Venom is handle much better than the 3rd movie(Hell, it's the best adaptation of Venom ever). Seriously Critic and everyone else watch it, you wont be dissapointed.

I never understood the fanatical following behind Spiderman TAS
This is one of the reasons why I despise people with nostalgia goggles.
They are willing to treat mediocre works as if they were flawless works of ingenious art, and at the same time tear down superior successors simply for not being what they grew up with

I never got how the die-hard TAS fans can hold it as highly as they do. I had a friend like that who didn't even give The Spectacular Spider-Man a chance because he was so used to the TAS version. (I eventually convinced him to see TSSM and he loved it though). I actually used to like the show, I never hated Spider-man: TAS, but watching it again older so much just bugged me. It had VERY bad pacing (Entire story arcs were hit or miss) and the animation was terrible at times and the love-triangles and secondary characters didn't cut it.
When The Spectacular Spider-Man came out it just blew S-M:TAS away with quality, voice-acting, character, heart, and animation. Everything about TSSM was done right, it sucked Disney didn't keep it when they bought Marvel. The way Greg Weisman made it was as true to the spirit of the character you could ever hope to get in an animated media.
If Doug does watch it I think it would be fun to see him do a New vs. Old with the two... but I think it's obvious which he'd prefer and which would be superior.

Is it silly that I was bracing myself for him saying he'll never review The Chipmunks' Adventure? 'Cuz I swear that's the movie everyone clamors for him to do the most and I wouldn't be surprised if he refused to do it just because everyone asking him to annoyed him by now. I'M JUST RELIEVED! 'Cuz I was able to re-watch that and MAAAAAAN I completely forgot how racist and xenophobic that movie was, not to mention the glaring inconsistencies in the animation, it's totally ripe for a good NC'ing!
-
I LOVED the Brave Little Toaster. Though the movie scared the bejeebus out of me as a kid.
Lampy getting electrocuted?
Toaster's dream with the FUCKING KILLER CLOWN OF DOOM?!
The creepy ceiling lamp at the dealership?
Kirby choking on his own wire? (That honestly still prevents me from vacuuming over the wire because I'm scared the vacuum will choke and die!)
Toaster getting squashed by the gears!?
Radiator having a nervous breakdown and exploding!?
Lots of dark stuff with a wacky idea of household appliances going on an adventure. Also, Kirby rules "SHUT UP BLANKIE!" best part in the film. I would love to see this as a review purely for nostalgic reasons, but you have little to work with, minus the psychotic scary parts.
Also, I too don't think you can add too much to Plinket's careful anal-sis of the Star Wars Prequels. Haha awesome list Doug!
-
08.29.2011 - 09:49 | ReesiePuffs
Same here! It was my favorite film when I was really little. Still on my top ten of Disney films (if you want to call it Disney b/c you could argue against it).
Very dark in so many places. There's a lot of dark kids films from that era, but none have no where near as many frightening moments as this one. It really helped me become a braver kid for it which is why I miss elements like that in animated movies today.
Oh, and don't forget Toaster KILLS the flower!
-
I am one of the folks who has previously suggested it, haha. I guess it would be difficult to fill 15 minutes about, but the reason I recommended it so fervently is because it's one of the films I most clearly remember as a kid. [a] It was good and [b] because it was absolute nightmare fuel, haha. I mean, a decade later, I didn't remember the name of the film, the plot, but I saw images from it and it was just that immediate "OH MY GOD IT'S THE BUNNY MOVIE".
I have to agree about the Spiderman cartoon. It just had a... Cheap feel to it. I also disliked the extensive use of (Extremely early) computer animation. It just moved weird and was distracting that put me off. The only notable thing about it was the fact that it was much more serialized than Batman or even the X-Men cartoon, with the episodes feeling much more connected to one another for an over-arcing storyline.

I think you're being a little hard. It sounds more like you're complaining about the spiderman setup (yeah - he's kind of a whinny, melodramatic guy). Take the time and watch like the venom saga episodes. I personally like how that show does it over Spectacular Spiderman (which I would say has slightly better dialogue - except for those bro moments).
I mean, yeah it's last in the competition of the superhero TAS's (x-men, batman, spiderman), but I thought it dealt with the lone superhero dimension pretty well.

I like S-M:TAS and it's alright that you prefer it, but TSSM did it's arcs much better and had better action, drama, and plotlines. It never dumbed anything down for kids and challenged the viewer to follow along with the story to understand things fully and it had character growth that was natural and well done, every character seemed to progress and develop by the end of the second season. It never dragged and even though Peter was the same angsty character he always is his angst was portrayed more realistically since he acted more like a teenager would. I'm just saying that if you compare the two the way that TSSM did its story arcs always felt smart and well done, even though I like TAS it fell flat a lot of the time and took a lot of liberties with what it changed in order to get a story.

A lot them are good on this list but doesn't mean that every one likes them a lot of the one's he's reviewed are one I liked as a kid!
The main reason Quackbusters is on there is I looked it up on youtube once and came across the S&E review of it from back in the 90s and the 2 got into an argument about it so I figurd there had to be enough of something there for the Crittic to go off of!

But based upon the this video and the fact I doubt Doug watched Exo squad as a kid(So few kids did with it being stuck in crappy timeslots in a lot of areas, I mean I had to wake up at six a.m. to watch it.) I seriously doubt he'll make a video for it.
Maybe we could goad the NC Chick into it though, I mean Nara Burns's Story arc throughout the series seems up her ally.
BTW It always seemed a little odd to me that Phaeton had such a rabid personal hatred for JT when it was *Spoiler alert* Nara that actually injured him.

Good to know which movies you won't review (people really always ask for Cats Don't Dance and The Brave Little Toaster? Dang).
How do people recommend movies, anyway? Through the comments? I've been wondering if the Nostalgia Critic would review Happily Ever After (unofficial Snow White sequel in which an owl voiced by Edward Asner raps) for years but I never knew how to request it (and until now I was too shy to post a comment!)
-
You can request reviews through the forums. There is a specific section of the forum for requests. The top of any page on this site you put your cursor over community then forums and then you choose what section etc. but people should read the FAQs before they request something just out of courtesy.
