Speaking of the "Slim Suit" I think this comment I found on youtube explains it all.
"This suit probably makes you sweat by retaining body heat. You lose water weight, but people who bought this and didn't know any better probably thought? they were losing fat.
You can create your own Slim Suit by wearing a garbage bag and several layers of sweaters and sweat pants. Then crank the heat up in your house and go to sleep. Just keep in mind that you can become severely dehydrated and might have a heart attack by doing this repeatedly."

So as expected, the Slim Suit was basically for suckers who thought "alternate" forms of exercise were trendy.
Coincidentally, I just remembered where I think I've seen the Slim Suit before: On Todd & Margo, the yuppie neighbors from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Guys, if you fell for the Slim Suit, you DESERVED to have a chunk of ice destroy your stereo. =P

I'm from the US and the only commercial I recognize is the Light Bright one (well, actually I recognize the product, but the particular commercial shown wasn't one I'd ever seen).
I'm pretty sure the jokes made about the commercials are the point of these videos. It might be called "The Nostalgia Critic", but nostalgia isn't the primary aim - humor is, and the humor is contained within the video. You're seeing where the jokes come from right there; you don't need to have seen the commercials as a child to get any of it.
I haven't seen 80% of the movies targeted for Nostalgia Critic videos, but I still watch every review, and reviews of movies that I don't know aren't any less funny than reviews of movies I do know.

05.26.2011 - 14:10 | Kryss LaBrynWe did get most of them in Canada as well, but I really don't remember the Pretenders ads/toys (although I am vaguely aware that they were a series/line of toys in which Transformers were somehow disguized as humans, because I spend far too much time on TV Tropes. How the hell do you fit a robot large enough to turn into a full-sized car (like Bumblebee) inside a regular-sized human body anyways? Or was that version of Bumblebee a little clown car or something).
Hey, Critic: you could do a show comparing/contrasting the various fast food mascots commercials. Remember when Burger King came out with that character (late 80's, I think? Maybe mid?) CALLED the "Burger King", as a response to Ronald McDonald? Remember how lame he was? Also Old Hamburglar was way cooler than the new version.

lol, this is funnier the second time I watched this (the first time was a link to the blip page by a friend/fellow TGWTG fan)and the part with Older Zack and Teddy Ruxpin was my favorite! I love these Nostalgic reviews of commericals Doug a great walk down memory lane.
I actually recalled seeing the Party Dance Barbie commerical as a girl and wanting to get that. :D

Oh god the crying cabbage patches kids! I actually have a funny story about mine. One day I decided to give it a bath… bad idea. So it wouldn’t stop crying my mom was going to take it back to the store to get it replaced. During her lunch hour she went to the Bay with it in a backpack and it started crying again. She started punching the beg saying “stop crying you stupide thing!” with everyone in the store looking at her odd. XD

you can't hear a French accent in that song? the words are all pronounced kind funny, the singer sounds french. and besides, wasn't this song made by Sad Panda? isn't he French? or am I totally puling all this out if my ass, because for all I know could very well be wrong, but the lyrics just sound odd to me.

thats basically what it does. i had a friend (who was an idiot) in high school who wrestled and would wear one(not the exact same product, but something like it) while exercising and sleeping.it helped a little bit to cut weight.
they are extremely dangerous though, because you can dehydrate yourself or over heat very quickly, and if the coaches had found out, i'm sure they would have taken it away or just kicked him off the team outright.

It is obviously Sonya Blade in the Cabbage Patch commercial. Her kiss gives off a wave as a child because she hasn't developed the explosive kiss of death yet.

Quite simple, really. the phallic symbol was not noticed by the kids who actually watched those commercials in the 80s. Only in the 90s when kids got cable (and scrambled porn) were things like that noticed. The parents were at work, so they could not truly see what their kids were watching and complain. The ones who were hoe with their kids watched soaps with their children, not realizing that it was turning them into back-stabbing liars and rapists and whores.

Serioiusly, just wear it and in six hours you can fit into your dress? WOW. and 20% juice? My lord, what were the nutritional standards back then? But I guess its to be expected I guess from the generation of wonderbread. Spotlight cars? Too lazy for remote controls?
REVENGE OF TEDDY RUXPIN!!
top 10 out of context lines, nice.
I like looking back on old commercials. I used to watch those old claymation transitions all the time. Great video.

I was wondering today if you were gonna show us more commercials. =D
I’d like to see Board James talk more about the E.T. board game.
2:54- At least no one made the Garbage Pail Kids in doll form.
I should note that in the Hanes commercial, the mannequin piece wearing the Hanes underwear has a bigger bulge (groin area).
Kool-Aid isn’t really a juice, but a fruit drink. I drink it all the time, and when I make it, I don’t see chunks of fruit in the powder.
I see that Zack and I have something in common; we like to collect Lego Star Wars sets.
I really love the Top 10 Ghostbusters jokes for that commercial. BTW, “what about the Twinkie?”
I remember seeing the Lite Brite commercial being played all the time when I was so young, and I NEVER had any interest in getting one.
Man, I miss watching those Ninja Turtles commercials. Also, “YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, TURTLES!!!”
Whose f***ing idea was it to make a suit that claims to take off weight when you wear it. I’m sure he did time in prison, and wore one of those suits as a uniform.

Oh my gosh! The toy Chicken McNuggets at the beginning of this episode--I LOVED those things when I was a child! I think I even had that Halloween one. I adored the puppet McNuggets commercials, too. (For rapping Chicken McNuggets--no, I am not making this up--go to http: //www .youtube.com/ watch?v=r9oR2EmU854)
I was never into Barbie as a little girl. I thought she was ugly and had a weird figure. Plus, it annoyed me that she couldn't stay upright by herself.
I did have a Cabbage Patch doll, though. What can I say? The marketing strategy for those toys was bloody brilliant. When I look at them now, all I can think is, "My god, they are HIDEOUS."
Also, IIRC, the SqueezeIt! drinks were quite tasty.
Teddy Ruxpin IS the devil. That bear always freaked me out.
And Lite-Brites! My brothers and I had one... but if they ever made dirty pictures with it, they never showed me. :p
-
05.24.2011 - 21:01 | BIG Zgood video you only lost me when you made fun of my name twice or thrice (Zack) P.S. i don't play with legos.

05.24.2011 - 21:18 | Axel WolfHah! I love the "!" symbol you used. Should have used that alert noise from the Metal Gear Solid games when it showed up. I do admit that the Teddy Ruxpin is scary as shit! I mean, I just recently watched the Halloween special you did a couple years ago. I admit when I was a little kid and I saw others kids have one, I could have sworn that Teddy Ruxpin was staring into my soul...
I admit I love Legos growing up and somewhat I still do and I love it when you said "Zack, he is a egotistical maniac!".
Anyways, with the Slim Suits...Biggest scam of the 1980s as what the 80sGuy said they look like Silver Surfer's dick in a condom....*shudders* This will join the Wonder Boner from the last commercial review and the Wet Banana from the first commercial review.
Very impressive NC!
-
05.25.2011 - 11:29 | AllisonTheSNLGuruThis was like how people used to wrap themselves in saran wrap to lose weight. Cost less to buy Saran Wrap, if you ask me.
And the Wet Banana toy...my childhood best friend had one, and we used to set it up in the backyard and go nuts. Sure, it was the poor man's Slip and Slide, and we were 14 years old (definitely too old to even think about using one of these safely), but we had fun. Cause when you're a teenager without a life in the mid-1990s, you made your own fun.

05.24.2011 - 21:27 | BlufftonSWK11Awesome stuff. My cousins had a Teddy Ruxpin, which was creepy by itself, but they also had his friend, it was some worm/caterpillar thing *shudder*.
But does anyone remember those Pizza Head commercials for Pizza Hut, or the shark that attacked some lady because she looked like a hostess cupcake.
But I think you should do the commercial for Ocarina of Time. It is A LOT better than the Zelda rap and whatever that thing was from Japan, or the original Super Smash Bros commercial where they are all fighting in a field of flowers while "So Happy Together" plays in the background.

05.24.2011 - 21:43 | AngryVideoGameNerdfanAnother great Commercials episode!
my favorites had to be the ones for Pop-Tarts,

A quick note about the rabbit on the TMNT commercial: His real name is Miyamoto Usagi, NOT Usagi Yojimbo. Usagi Yojimbo (rabbit bodyguard in Japanese) is the name of the comic book series created by Stan Sakai in 1987 in which he is the title character in. Usagi has appeared in both the 1987 and the 2003 TMNT series, though in the 87 series, he was also mistakenly named Usagi Yojimbo.
