Since when could we watch these videos in HD? Because I always love watching VHS-recorded commercials in high definition. :D

And you missed it, Doug. There was a really small hint: the other 80% of Kool-Aid Coolers is duck.

As much as it is in bad taste, I had this strange feeling he was going to make a "Day of the Woman" joke with that Grapenuts Commercial, anyone else besides me feel that too?
  • Sheranda
    avatar
I read your comment, expecting you to say something about what I said. You didn't.

By the way, I looked up Day of the Woman, and it makes sense. What better way to celebrate killing the men who raped you than with a bowl of wheat and barley?
  • prittyfunnylady  - Love this
I love this site, it makes me feel so happy in world that usually makes me sad.

he seemed to have a ton of energy for this one, really upbeat, looks like he's lost some weight too
  • keniakittykat
    avatar
yeah, I noticed that too. ... Maybe he used the slim suit xD
  • The Shamster
    avatar
Speaking of the "Slim Suit" I think this comment I found on youtube explains it all.

"This suit probably makes you sweat by retaining body heat. You lose water weight, but people who bought this and didn't know any better probably thought? they were losing fat.

You can create your own Slim Suit by wearing a garbage bag and several layers of sweaters and sweat pants. Then crank the heat up in your house and go to sleep. Just keep in mind that you can become severely dehydrated and might have a heart attack by doing this repeatedly."

Do they even still make the Pop Tarts with no icing on them anymore? Because I never see the plain ones in the stores unless its the storebrand kind.
  • Set Abomine
They stopped making the plain non-iced Pop Tarts in the late 90's because they weren't selling.
  • Thatguywiththegenitals
    avatar
no they still have some, i get them every time i go to the store
  • Dragon_Nexus
Same principal as a sauna. People think they lose weight, but as soon as they start drinking again, even water, the body just puts back what it lost.
  • SlyDante
    avatar
So as expected, the Slim Suit was basically for suckers who thought "alternate" forms of exercise were trendy.

Coincidentally, I just remembered where I think I've seen the Slim Suit before: On Todd & Margo, the yuppie neighbors from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Guys, if you fell for the Slim Suit, you DESERVED to have a chunk of ice destroy your stereo. =P

    Silly misterben, Kool-Aid isn't made of duck, it's 20% juice and 70% pop-tarts, because it's the only other thing that's so hot it's cool....aid

and what's the other 10%?....debris, because every time that Kool-aid guy breaks through the wall, all sorts of shit falls in.

I don't enjoy these that much... Being European, I don't recognize any of these nostalgic commercials... They only aired in the US, I think.
  • moonloon
    avatar
I'm from the US and the only commercial I recognize is the Light Bright one (well, actually I recognize the product, but the particular commercial shown wasn't one I'd ever seen).

I'm pretty sure the jokes made about the commercials are the point of these videos. It might be called "The Nostalgia Critic", but nostalgia isn't the primary aim - humor is, and the humor is contained within the video. You're seeing where the jokes come from right there; you don't need to have seen the commercials as a child to get any of it.

I haven't seen 80% of the movies targeted for Nostalgia Critic videos, but I still watch every review, and reviews of movies that I don't know aren't any less funny than reviews of movies I do know.
  • JohanTW
    avatar
True :) I do enjoy the humor a great deal!

    I feel with you.
  • Kryss LaBryn
We did get most of them in Canada as well, but I really don't remember the Pretenders ads/toys (although I am vaguely aware that they were a series/line of toys in which Transformers were somehow disguized as humans, because I spend far too much time on TV Tropes. How the hell do you fit a robot large enough to turn into a full-sized car (like Bumblebee) inside a regular-sized human body anyways? Or was that version of Bumblebee a little clown car or something).

Hey, Critic: you could do a show comparing/contrasting the various fast food mascots commercials. Remember when Burger King came out with that character (late 80's, I think? Maybe mid?) CALLED the "Burger King", as a response to Ronald McDonald? Remember how lame he was? Also Old Hamburglar was way cooler than the new version.

    Keep them coming!
  • ladydiskette
    avatar
lol, this is funnier the second time I watched this (the first time was a link to the blip page by a friend/fellow TGWTG fan)and the part with Older Zack and Teddy Ruxpin was my favorite! I love these Nostalgic reviews of commericals Doug a great walk down memory lane.

I actually recalled seeing the Party Dance Barbie commerical as a girl and wanting to get that. :D

i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE these commercial compilations....mainly because i remember all of this shit. Very funny, A+++ Critic. Now..if you would...Suck my Dead PIG!!!!
  • Sheranda
    avatar
Yeah. As much as some of us would hate to admit, commercials make up large parts of our childhood memories. Recently, I found a Sears commercial that I remember from the late 1990s, now known as "Another Scorcher!" Why do I remember that commercial so vividly?
  • Loneheart
    avatar
Oh god the crying cabbage patches kids! I actually have a funny story about mine. One day I decided to give it a bath… bad idea. So it wouldn’t stop crying my mom was going to take it back to the store to get it replaced. During her lunch hour she went to the Bay with it in a backpack and it started crying again. She started punching the beg saying “stop crying you stupide thing!” with everyone in the store looking at her odd. XD
  • Moronic98  - AMAZING
this was a great video doug i always love these
  • Sindragosa
Oooooh YES. I love the Nostalgic Commercials videos and was hoping you'd do more.

THats pretty funny and i think we can all agree that we hate those dang cryingcabbage patch kids
  • Holidayruin  - YES!
YES! ANOTHER COMMERCIAL EPISODE! My favorite NC episode is the second commercial episode, and I'm so glad it's back! YES!!!!
Um... just wondering, though, weren't you doing Tentacoolio?
Along with that, the NC Anthem is BACK!!!!

ugh, I've never liked that song, I think Linkara and AVGN have much better theme Songs. Maybe it's the french accent in the lyrics, but that song doesn't seem to fit NC at all.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
    What French accent?
  • Fangheart
    avatar
you can't hear a French accent in that song? the words are all pronounced kind funny, the singer sounds french. and besides, wasn't this song made by Sad Panda? isn't he French? or am I totally puling all this out if my ass, because for all I know could very well be wrong, but the lyrics just sound odd to me.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
You could be right. I'm not familiar with SadPanda, and I haven't really heard any REAL French accents lately, so I'm not entirely sure what they sound like.
  • RockinDover
    avatar
I thought it was because it's just really dull. If I did a theme song for the critic, I'd make it an exciting hard rock number!
Besides, the NC doesn't need a theme song. He's done so well without it.
  • Fangheart
    avatar
exactly! please do make a theme song like that for the critic, it'd sure as hell be way more awesome that what he has now!

and even so, it'd still be nice to have a theme song to associate with NC.
  • Moronic98
aah comercials they will never get old and i love the title"!" is a great title
  • 80sGuy  - Slim suit
    avatar
those people in SlimSuits look like Silver Surfer's dick in a condom. wow
  • Sheranda
    avatar
I would love to know how those suits worked. It wasn't clearly explained, was it?
  • jjramsey
The Slim Suits probably work the same way the Kinoki foot pads do. :)
  • TomQuoVadis

What's funny is that people always lose weight while sleeping. It's mostly water weight, though, so you usually get it all right back.
  • KJT
    avatar
My theory is that it's basically a raincoat. It makes you sweat, therefore you lose fluids and become lighter.

You'll be dehydrated and won't have lost any actual body fat, but who cares??
  • NoCoolNames
    avatar
thats basically what it does. i had a friend (who was an idiot) in high school who wrestled and would wear one(not the exact same product, but something like it) while exercising and sleeping.it helped a little bit to cut weight.

they are extremely dangerous though, because you can dehydrate yourself or over heat very quickly, and if the coaches had found out, i'm sure they would have taken it away or just kicked him off the team outright.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
Huh. That's interesting. I've heard that you can lose weight by sweating.
  • TheAlmightyDrewsus  - Young Sonya Blade
It is obviously Sonya Blade in the Cabbage Patch commercial. Her kiss gives off a wave as a child because she hasn't developed the explosive kiss of death yet.
  • BIG Z  - CRAP!!!(not video)
I thought i could make an account (firs tone i have made here ) and comment first. Oh well time to watch the video with my brand new account.

I love comercials KEEP THEM COMING!!!
  • JurassicParkFan123  - ahh no Teddy fight

    Heheheehehehehe....

    hahAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! ...possibly.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
Or, Zack could have sent Teddy Ruxpin to kill the Nostalgia Critic at the end.

The Critic's voice is kind of high. He speaks in alto, but his singing voice can go much higher.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
By the way, I looked up that 1980s Lego commercial on RetroJunk. I read the comments, and about half the people claim to have met Zack.
  • IAmNotPaul  - Squeezit and Freud
Sweet mother of Freud, how did the squeezit commercial make it onto the airwaves. I'm just stunned. Wow.
  • mumbls
    avatar
Quite simple, really. the phallic symbol was not noticed by the kids who actually watched those commercials in the 80s. Only in the 90s when kids got cable (and scrambled porn) were things like that noticed. The parents were at work, so they could not truly see what their kids were watching and complain. The ones who were hoe with their kids watched soaps with their children, not realizing that it was turning them into back-stabbing liars and rapists and whores.
  • CellSeam
    avatar
Serioiusly, just wear it and in six hours you can fit into your dress? WOW. and 20% juice? My lord, what were the nutritional standards back then? But I guess its to be expected I guess from the generation of wonderbread. Spotlight cars? Too lazy for remote controls?

    REVENGE OF TEDDY RUXPIN!!

top 10 out of context lines, nice.

I like looking back on old commercials. I used to watch those old claymation transitions all the time. Great video.
  • archiveit
    avatar
Actually a lot of fruit drinks have as little as 5-10% actual juice in them. This is why it's important to read labels.
  • brick mooncode
    avatar
For something to be called "juice" legally, it has to be actually squeezed from the real thing. So things like Kool-Aid that are basically just artificially flavored sugar water have to be called "drink" (look at the label, it's true!).
  • Sheranda
    avatar
    I miss claymation. And puppetry.
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
I was wondering today if you were gonna show us more commercials. =D

I’d like to see Board James talk more about the E.T. board game.

2:54- At least no one made the Garbage Pail Kids in doll form.

I should note that in the Hanes commercial, the mannequin piece wearing the Hanes underwear has a bigger bulge (groin area).

Kool-Aid isn’t really a juice, but a fruit drink. I drink it all the time, and when I make it, I don’t see chunks of fruit in the powder.

I see that Zack and I have something in common; we like to collect Lego Star Wars sets.

I really love the Top 10 Ghostbusters jokes for that commercial. BTW, “what about the Twinkie?”

I remember seeing the Lite Brite commercial being played all the time when I was so young, and I NEVER had any interest in getting one.

Man, I miss watching those Ninja Turtles commercials. Also, “YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, TURTLES!!!”

Whose f***ing idea was it to make a suit that claims to take off weight when you wear it. I’m sure he did time in prison, and wore one of those suits as a uniform.
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
UPDATE: I should put this out. Those Transformers commercials are about the Pretenders. They are your favorite Transformers characters disgused as humans. It was shown in the original Generation 1 series. Also, Alice from "Revenge of the Fallen" was a Pretender.
  • Balthus  - Really?
    avatar
Do you really think Michael Bay mined the depths of 80's commercial archives to create the Alice character, or he just wanted a hot robot chick in his movie? I'd put money on the likelihood that he never heard of the Pretender series of toys.
  • SpeedyEric
    avatar
I'm guessing the writers told Bay about the pretenders, and he thought it would be a good idea to use a pretender to infiltraite Sam to prob out the energon secrets from his head.
  • bluesoul
    avatar
Oh my gosh! The toy Chicken McNuggets at the beginning of this episode--I LOVED those things when I was a child! I think I even had that Halloween one. I adored the puppet McNuggets commercials, too. (For rapping Chicken McNuggets--no, I am not making this up--go to http: //www .youtube.com/ watch?v=r9oR2EmU854)

I was never into Barbie as a little girl. I thought she was ugly and had a weird figure. Plus, it annoyed me that she couldn't stay upright by herself.

I did have a Cabbage Patch doll, though. What can I say? The marketing strategy for those toys was bloody brilliant. When I look at them now, all I can think is, "My god, they are HIDEOUS."

Also, IIRC, the SqueezeIt! drinks were quite tasty.

Teddy Ruxpin IS the devil. That bear always freaked me out.

And Lite-Brites! My brothers and I had one... but if they ever made dirty pictures with it, they never showed me. :p
  • BIG Z
good video you only lost me when you made fun of my name twice or thrice (Zack) P.S. i don't play with legos.
  • TheDued92

I like these a lot, they really remind me of when I was a kid and watched these weird commercials.
  • NadiaZeta

    AHHHH THE DEMONIC BEAR OoO!!!
  • Axel Wolf
Hah! I love the "!" symbol you used. Should have used that alert noise from the Metal Gear Solid games when it showed up. I do admit that the Teddy Ruxpin is scary as shit! I mean, I just recently watched the Halloween special you did a couple years ago. I admit when I was a little kid and I saw others kids have one, I could have sworn that Teddy Ruxpin was staring into my soul...

I admit I love Legos growing up and somewhat I still do and I love it when you said "Zack, he is a egotistical maniac!".

Anyways, with the Slim Suits...Biggest scam of the 1980s as what the 80sGuy said they look like Silver Surfer's dick in a condom....*shudders* This will join the Wonder Boner from the last commercial review and the Wet Banana from the first commercial review.

    Very impressive NC!
  • AllisonTheSNLGuru
This was like how people used to wrap themselves in saran wrap to lose weight. Cost less to buy Saran Wrap, if you ask me.

And the Wet Banana toy...my childhood best friend had one, and we used to set it up in the backyard and go nuts. Sure, it was the poor man's Slip and Slide, and we were 14 years old (definitely too old to even think about using one of these safely), but we had fun. Cause when you're a teenager without a life in the mid-1990s, you made your own fun.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
To me, Wet Banana just looked like someone put down some yellow tarp, then sprayed it with a hose.
  • Tapeworm121

Love Nostalgic Commercials, another great one Mr. Critic!

I'll never understand the appeal of the crying cabbage patch kid doll, but it's still less puzzling than the dolls that go to the bathroom.
  • Xchaotix
    avatar
Wow, even more commercials? The possibilities are endless with them O.O
  • Mz Doom
    avatar
Teddy Ruxpin is evil! I really did dread that toy, I kept my eye on him whenever I went any of my friend's houses that had that abomination.

I also think that slim suit ranks up there in stupid ad objects along with Shake weight and that f'ing snuggle blanket.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
I loved Barbie growing up, but I always wished she and Ken were more posable. Now, they are, finally. They're fashionistas.
  • Sheranda
    avatar
    Poseable or posable?
  • BlufftonSWK11
Awesome stuff. My cousins had a Teddy Ruxpin, which was creepy by itself, but they also had his friend, it was some worm/caterpillar thing *shudder*.

But does anyone remember those Pizza Head commercials for Pizza Hut, or the shark that attacked some lady because she looked like a hostess cupcake.

But I think you should do the commercial for Ocarina of Time. It is A LOT better than the Zelda rap and whatever that thing was from Japan, or the original Super Smash Bros commercial where they are all fighting in a field of flowers while "So Happy Together" plays in the background.
  • mumbls
    avatar
I remember the adventures of Pizza Head and Steve. My sister told me that they were a spoof of the old Mr Bill Sketches from SNL in the 70s.
  • Angelic Plague
    avatar
I do vaguely recall the cupcake lady being attacked by the shark. There was a similar one where a guy got attacked for looking like a twinkie...

    ...a big twinkie.
  • Soma Hiru
I think he went a bit overboard with the slim suit... I think it was a bit of a letdown as an ending (compared to the hillarious wonder boner ending in the previous one). still, amazing Nostalgia commercials again!
  • AngryVideoGameNerdfan
    Another great Commercials episode!
my favorites had to be the ones for Pop-Tarts,
Squeezits, Teddy Ruxpin, Slim Suit and whatever
that liar talking about a cure for diabetes was for!

but i have to ask, why the hell didn't you mention the
    Ayds diet product commercials yet!?
that one's WAAAAAAAYYYY too good to pass up!
i mean, just watch this one Ayds commercial
and tell me you didn't completely crack up by watching it!

A quick note about the rabbit on the TMNT commercial: His real name is Miyamoto Usagi, NOT Usagi Yojimbo. Usagi Yojimbo (rabbit bodyguard in Japanese) is the name of the comic book series created by Stan Sakai in 1987 in which he is the title character in. Usagi has appeared in both the 1987 and the 2003 TMNT series, though in the 87 series, he was also mistakenly named Usagi Yojimbo.
