Totally! There were so many wierd-ass commercials in the 80's and 90's that it's enough material to last years! Awesome Vid....now where can i get one of those humongous Bubble blowers! Imagine doing that drunk or high! TOTAL AWESOMENESS!
and speaking of commercials....is anyone else annoyed with the 'LOL' commercials that pop up at the end of these videos? every time they come on it feels like my brain is being rubbed on a cheese grater. I understand that the adverts help the site and that's all cool, but there's already the advert that pops up at the beginning of the vid, then the 3000+ that 'pop-up bar' at the bottom while the vid is playing! Grr! >.>
-
02.23.2011 - 16:14 | RuinerXXSinCityThe weirdness is what made them so memorable as opposed to the commercials today who try WAY TOO HARD to make a lasting impression. Don't get me wrong a commercial will always be something you have no choice but to sit through. Especially these days since most shows on cable depending on their length(hour or half hour shows) seem to have their commercial breaks almost at the exact same time on every channel. Unless you have Tivo and you record the shows you watch channel surfing doesn't do much good.
This was really for my money the best NC episode of the last 3-4 months. I really enjoy these nostalgic commercials special episodes quite a bit more then the "Old vs. New", and "Top 11 lists". I feel pretty confident saying that I doubt I am the only one hopping for more of these in the future. Simply put Doug hasn't even scratched the surface on the bizarre, ridiculous, and often suggestive commercials from the 80s and 90s commercials.

Skuzbuckett,
I was going to reply to your message just to tell you that the woman in your avatar looks hot.
And I am still replying to say that, but I also have to agree about how grating those post show Mac n Cheese commercials are. (Cheese? Grating? I'll be here all week, folks.)
Your comment struck a nerve with me, Skuzbuckett.
Some may say "why complain about commercials that appear after the program? Just turn it off". Well, sometimes, because the show is over, I'll just scroll down to read the comments, thinking the video will stop. Then, the audio for that commercial with that unfunny woman and her awful jokes plays...and I let it go and read more comments. And it continues to play until am suddenly annoyed and frustrated that anyone would pay this woman for such bad comedy. Then I rip my headphones out of the PC.
-
02.27.2011 - 12:14 | Skuzbucketlickmyponybutt
lol indeed. that's exactly how I feel! I try hitting the back button before they start, but it sometimes takes 5 or 6 seconds before it actually goes through, and by then the brain has been grated. *sigh* I have torn feelings for the woman in those commercials, yes she's not very funny and those commercials make me want to rip the internet cord out of my computer, but she is trying to support her family...
and yes that pic is me, and before anyone asks, i got Skuzbucketlickmyponybutt from a web show called 'The Guild'. the phrase makes me giggle whenever i see it lol.
and AllisontheSNLGuru, unfortunately that means the commercials succeeded. damn. lol
-
02.23.2011 - 23:56 | AllisonTheSNLGuruI agree with the "LOL" commercials at the end of the videos. Aside from the fact that it buffers constantly while its on, I just dont feel like hearing some 10th-rate female "comedian" talking about food products. I don't care, really. At 12:30 am, its only going to make me want to eat.

Only without commercials!
...well, except for this one which is entirely commercials. But GOOD commercials!
In the passed few months I've made it a habit to look how long a video is the first moment it's loaded up. I've had this theory that the longer passed the 20 minute mark a NC video is, the greater chance it has to be something special, usually because the extra time is either a ton of jokes (meaning the movie gave Doug plenty of material to work with and is a comedic gold mine, like Neverending Story 3), or extra sketch comedy or other fun goodies have been added on, like chasing Casper or a guest appearance/collaboration.
In this case, the entire kind of episode is a special one. And a damn fun one!

It's probably because of the refusal of Disney to release it again, actually. They're embarrassed by the controversy and racial portrayals in it so they won't release it again, yet one of their most popular rides at their theme parks is based off of it. The kids who ride Splash Mountain probably don't even know it's based on a movie.

Exactly this. The only reason I know it exists is because when I was a kid I had a big book that just listed and gave brief descriptions of every animated feature Disney had ever made up through The Lion King. In fact... that really makes me wonder when the heck that commercial was aired, since Song of the South was released two years before my PARENTS were born. o.0 That's not nostalgic, that's HISTORIC. Guess they re-released it in theaters at some point. Still... weird.

Adding to what August M. said it was re-released in the 80s. Today a Disney movie will get re-released sparingly in IMAX or every couple of years on DVD (then put back in the "vault" because it makes it more "special") but back then when the home video market was still a fledgling beast they'd re-release movies nationwide in theaters.
The first movie I ever saw in theaters was Bambi 40+ years after it was first released.
-
02.23.2011 - 14:23 | TheAlienYeah I havebeen toDisney about 5 times and had no idea who they were... honestly I just thought Disney came up with some new characters for the ride and then I saw this and realized "Oh never mind"
-
02.23.2011 - 00:04 | anonexistentuserI'm from Iowa, and I've heard of it. It's the movie that "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" is from.
-
02.23.2011 - 06:21 | Marshmallowcreampie
Haha, Disney just refuses to release it because of the supposed racism. (I've never seen it, so I can't judge) The movie is kind of their embarassment, really, they try to cover it up. (although they're not hesitant to use the song "Zippity Doo Da" from it) The movie theater at my town has a lot of old movie posters in the hall, and there's a Song of the South one. XD

No one would ban a film because it depicted slavery. Disney probably claims it was banned because the little white kid talked to grown black adults as if they were children, Uncle Remus was a "Uncle Tom" type, and the Brer Animals had a broken english dialect similar to the other racist depictions of black people back then (like mammies and stepinfetchit).
I think the REAL reason SOTS was banned was because it was boring as fuck and took what seemed like an hour to get to the first animated part. It was the only mediocre animated Disney feature from that period, and I think Disney wanted to shelf it.

OH SWEET JESUS CRITIC THANK YOU. Your last Commercial Special was just awesome, I laughed so much & had fun revisiting those childhood memories with you. You even inspired me to head over to RetroJunk & view several commercials myself...But I thought it would be a year before you returned to it, sadly.
And here you are, just a few months later, bigger & just as awesome as last time! God bless you, you magnificent bastard (Though wasn't the special originally called "After These Messages"?)!! ^_^
Drunken stray thoughts I had while watching:
- So Barney had his Cocoa Pebbles addiction, those kids went insane over a lack of Corn Pops, then you have Sonny & Cocoa Puffs, Wendell & Cinnamon Toast Crunch, not to mention the Trix Rabbit...Man, the rehab centers had some strange cases to deal with back in those days.
- Okay, once Sucker Punch is out, we need to hire Zack Snyder to do a Dino Riders movie, stat! Our boyhood wet dreams cannot go unappreciated by the public!
- I vaguely remember the rapping Zelda ad, but...But...Was that Japanese ad for real? Even for the same game? Holy sh...
- Ah yes, The Grape Escape...Those glorious post-Mousetrap days of board game history where if your game didn't have somer overly-complicated gimmick, it was crap. Really, we just loved setting it up & making those machines go off! It's one of the only games where we WANTED to fail, just so we could torture our Play-Doh creations!
- "This is why you will never be as popular as Happy Meals." Could be worse. They could be Wendy's Kids Meals. Hey, anybody clamoring for a "City of Ember" promo toy?
- I haven't seen Aliens yet, sooo...Does the movie really have flying Xenomorphs that get bottled up by helicopters piloted by G.I. Joe playing alien dress-up? Huh. Gotta say, kinda expected it to be different, from what I've seen.
- I honestly had no idea what that "Johnson" ad was even actually for. In the end, I want to say it was for boats, but...Seriously, was it even an ad for anything? Was that just by the same pedophile behind the puppet phone line ad who had some leftover change?
- Lastly, I just really loved the little "echoes" you put at the ends of some ads like the Cocoa Pebbles one. Very nice touch, very funny. Hope to see more soon down the road! =)
-
02.23.2011 - 01:02 | ThatWhiteGuyi also had some thoughts about these commercials. peticularly the "Cabbage Patch Twins" one. If the dad of the daughter is calling his mom and saying she is a Grandma (even though she already is), wouldn't that technically mean he impregnated hisown daughter? Just think about it for a second, and tell me if i'm crazy.

Maybe because I'm into boating, but... it's for Johnson outboard motors. :)
And it's a damned memorable commercial for a household name product in the boat industry, too.

02.23.2011 - 13:55 | RockinDover
Actually, the US rapping Zelda ad was for Link's Awakening for the Game Boy, judging by the black and white screen, and the Japanese one was for A Link To The Past. I'm just surprised the NC didn't use the Zelda rap ad for the original Zelda for the NES in this. Also, he's totally right about rap music being totally unfitting for Zelda game. It needs to be epic orchestral music... or melodic heavy metal!
Also, Aliens does not have flying Xenomorphs being bottled up by helicopters, and no G.I. Joe playing alien dress up... and I'm surprised they didn't have a figure of Sigourney Weaver at all... and who the hell is ATAX?
-
In those Corn Pops commercials, I was waiting for a clip from The Brady Bunch Movie. You know, when Jan was saying in her head, "How come Marcia gets the good drawers? How come Marcia doesn't have to wear glasses? How come Marcia gets the boys, the nice hair, the trophies, the good grades, and all the attention from Mom and Dad?! Marcia, Marcia, MARCIA!!!"

Awesome idea on looking back on more commercials from our youth, Doug. You never seize to amaze me.
1:41- I guess it’s true when they say that big things come in small packages.
4:52- This commercial looks like Sesame Street if it was produced by Chester A. Bum.
I was wondering if you were gonna mention “Suburban Commando” during the After Burner part.
I never heard of Dino-Riders before, but I Do agree that they look awesome and deserve a comeback.
Nice PSA moment with the Cocoa Pebbles commercial. Now, let’s turn it into a comic for Linkara to review for PSA Hell. =P
I wonder if that Zelda rap was what the Angry Video Game Nerd was talking about in his Nintendo Power episode.
It’s been a really long time since I saw that Grape Escape ad, and I can see why it was SO long ago.
It was the Aliens toy commercials where I first heard of both the Alien and Predator franchises.
Good thing I never saw the Johnson or Wonder Boner commercials before this.

Great Job again
And I loved how you referenced some of your lesser known reviews. I think this is the first "Shazam" Reference.
BUBBLES made me laugh so hard.
And I'm glad I'm not the ONLY person who was wondering why the little boy was naked.
And Song of the South. I'm probably one of the few kids who loved that movie.
I still have NO idea why it's banned in the US now.
A black slave was happy?
So what?
It's not politically correct, but I'm sure there was like... .00000001% of them that could of been optimistic, I guess. *shrugs*
Wow... There were really hotlines for everything in the 80's weren't there? Thank God I grew up in the 90's. And the only thing I wanted to call a hotline for was for AirPens.
Which reminds me... Do a Air-Pens one. I wanted those so bad, and then when I finally got them, they Blowed!
Literally.

That drawing of Barney during the Pep Talk is hilarious. XD Very awesome skit. I've never liked the skits but that was a ringer.
AHaha, wonderful Guess Who version of the game. That was a good LOL! "Does he LOOK like a BITCH!?"

Okay, a little weird, interesting fact that I have to throw out there. Every Tuesday night when I'm all pumped for a new NC episode, I want to see it ASAP (its usually available around 9-ish) so I bring up any other widescreen NC video (usually one of my favorites) watch it, and then afterwards when the newest one's on the list after the ad, I just click on it. So I don't have to wait 3+ hours for it to appear on the list. ^_^
Well, your original commercials episode is one of my all time favorites! Seriously, I've probably seen it over 30 times. I practically have it memorized! lol So, I was watching that one before this one, so when I clicked on this and suddenly you in the same shirt, chair, and location appeared on the screen without any warning, I was like, "WHAT THE HELL?? Did I just hit replay? But...he's smiling and not reclining depressed, so its NOT the same one.." LOL!
Anyway, that was just kinda EXTREMELY coincidental and freaky! Just thought I'd share!
SO EXCITED TO SEE A NEW INSTALLMENT! I know a lot of people might whine and gripe that you did a part 2 so soon, but I don't care at all! You can't complain about an episode like this when its SO FREAKIN' FUNNY! And, honestly, I know you're always funny and I love all your reviews to an extent, but I'm being serious when I say this was realy HILARIOUS!! Particularly the last two, for obvious reasons!
You also got to pack in a lot more commercials than last time, because last time you were also fitting in the story of, "What am I doing with me life? I'm a wreck!" and then the song at the end of you getting back to where you belong. Which I LOVE, btw, but this was more dedicated to just reviewing commercials because you want to, which is cool!
I mean, who said you have to JUST be a film critic? Sure, that's what your most known for--reviewing terrible movies--but in all honesty, your the "Nostalgia" Critic. You can review anything nostalgic, good or bad! You also do t.v. shows, you've done cereal mascots, drug psas, so why not more commercials?
You admitted that it seems weird reviewing them, but you explained yourself well why you did, and went on doing it for the fun anyway! And, we should all respect that! They are easy to mock after all!
I think I laughed the hardest at the Flinstones one, the bubble thing (That's the name?? XD That's gotta be one of the easiest commercials to mock, because of how seriously they take it!), the fuckin' 900 numbers, and obviously Johnson and Wunder Boner. Yes, that clearly was done on purpose. No doubts about it.
Why DIDN'T those Dino-robot--whatever thingys catch on?! I've never even heard of them! Those suckers look freakin' BADASS TO THE HIGHEST POWER!! And...I'M A GIRL! LOL
I love these episodes, your humor, and how adorable you look in that t-shirt! Thank you so much! This is my favorite this month!

Yes... yes there were a lot of phone call commercials. I do not remember there being that many but... my God.
But what REALLY got me, despite the side splitting hilarity that was the entire thing, there was one commercial that actually irked me:
The Spring Easter Bunny hotline commerical.
And here's why:
At the very beginning of the commercial, with all the animals looking on with joyful faces on, I IMMEDIATELY knew where that was from. It was from "Jungle Emperor", better known in the USA as "Kimba the White Lion".
This was an anime from the 60's that has the honor of being one of the first, if not THE first, TV anime in COLOR! It was created by Osamu "God of Manga" Tezuka that oversaw both his original manga and the TV anime versions. His influence in Japanese comics and animation has put him on near Godlike status when it comes to revering historical figures in Japan.
AND THEY USE FOOTAGE FROM HIS CREATION FOR A CRAPPY PUBLIC ACCESS HOTLINE COMMERCIAL!?
WTF?! HOW did they get away with that?! Did they think no one would notice?! And how the hell did they get that footage anyway?!
I would have never known this if Doug hadn't dug it up for this special. I'm not really mad since this commercial was from decades ago, and I can see how they would have thought no one would recognize it, but HOW?! HOW did they get that footage and figure it was a good idea to use?!
Oye... I need a drink.

The world's greatest mystery is not how many licks it takes to get to the center of the Tootsie Pop. The world's greatest mystery is why is that kid naked. Nice to see someone finally bring this mystery to the table. It's something that really needs to be solved.
And when it comes to the Cabbage Patch twins, wouldn't that be just like going out and buying two Cabbage Patch kids? I wonder if any parents bought two relatively cheap or discount Cabbage Patch kids for their child and said "Here honey. Twin Cabbage Patch kids, just like you asked for".
Entertaining as always, Doug.

Someone needs to talk to Fred Wolf & Charles Swenson about that Tootsie-Pop Commercial since they're the ones who made it. That same year they made an X-rated film called "Down and Dirty Duck" to cash in on Fritz the Cat craze in the 70's.
