01.12.2011 - 03:45 | CronnixI really dont see why is all the hate on the first movie. I remember him going nuts over magic.. in a kids movie.. Seriously? So magic in Secret of Nymph is allright, but in ferngully is not?..
-
Seriously, dude? Secret of "Nymph"?! That's Secret of NIMH. It's an acronym for the National Institute of Mental Health. It's not a fairy that lives in a tree (that's Ferngully)
But the reasons why the magic in NIMH is better is because the whole movies doesn't revolve around the magic that some of the rats of NIMH had. Sure, they had magic, but it wasn't a major plot point.
It was a beautiful, and well animated, story about a mother's love for her son and desire to save her family from harm. Ferngully is about pollution. Which is a more compelling story?
I'm not saying Ferngully was the worst movie ever made, but compared to The Secret of NIMH, it's crap. Both in animation AND in story.
-
01.12.2011 - 07:57 | moonloon
I've watched the episode recently, and no, he doesn't go nuts over the magic in Ferngully. He goes nuts over the magic in Quest for Camelot, because it was utterly random. In Ferngully, most of the complaints were about the cheesy characters, the preachy plotline, the cheap animation, the horrible and arbitrary songs, and the awful story construction.
And no, "It's for kids!" is not a good argument for those things. The Secret of NIMH was for kids, and still managed to have a compelling storyline, interesting characters, and excellent animation.

I LOVED FernGully when I was a kid, too. I still do. But it seems that internet movie critics have agreed that it's "bad" and so we must all bow our heads in agreement to their snobbish cr@p.
Apparently it wasn't "bad" enough not to shamelessly make a James Cameron uncredited remake of it. It seems that if you change "pixies" with "blue cat-aliens", it's a completely different movie.
P.S. The sequel though, I never dared watch... And it looks like I made a VERY wise decision :| Goddamit, that looks and sounds painful. And... I'm pretty sure my 12 year-old sister could animate this better :|

01.12.2011 - 16:01 | kyuuketsukiFernGully was indeed "not that bad," which is probably why its remake "Avatar" did so well. As Plume said.... I'm surprised more people don't realize this.
-
01.12.2011 - 16:44 | Jegsimmons
well personally i think most (not all) environmental films are lame period. oh i know its all good intent, but MAN are they preachy and at times hypocritical and dont have facts straight
and honestly, ferngully was better than avatar....and i think ferngully is pretty bad in a sense.
but i have ferngully 2 also...and man...its painful to watch even as a kid.

01.12.2011 - 13:34 | JustThatGuy"We must bow our heads in agreement to their snobbish crap"?
Who exactly do you think we're watching? Granted, I don't watch every reviewer on this site, but a lot of them actively try to discourage viewers from just blindly following the opinions they give. Linkara once even chewed his fans out about it(Granted, it was as Mechakara, but still.) If you decide to simply bow to what Doug or anyone else here says despite what you think, that's just you being an idiot.
That said, I have watched Ferngully and I do genuinely hate it for much the same reasons NC gave in his review. It's kind of amusing that you bring up Avatar, though; it having a near carbon copy of Ferngully's story is the very reason why a lot of people absolutely DESPISE it.
-
01.13.2011 - 13:48 | ajdogg
You said it, JustThatGuy! Couldn't aggree with you more! Only thing I'm not 100% behind ya on is the resons for hating Avatar. I despise it simply for Cameron stealing the name Avatar from the cartoon series, just months before the release of The Last Airbender.
Can't wait to see the review of Secret of NIMH 2!
-

JustThatGuy,
Chill, I wasn't talking about DOUG when I mentioned the snobbish reviewers. His reviews I always appreciate, in a way, because of his HUMOUR. He hates a movie, he makes fun of it. But dammit, he still makes me laugh, no matter how attached I am to the film he's bashing.
I was talking about people who write these text-book school essays in pompous language, to make them seem like twice the $hit they are. The kind of people who only like something because it's generally accepted as "good". And their followers, of course, who annoy me horribly.
Relax.
-
01.12.2011 - 15:17 | Marshmallowcreampie
Hey, now, you don't have to agree with anything NC says. In fact... Hasn't Doug Walker admitted that while playing the character, he overdoes the anger and doesn't ALWAYS completely hate what he's reviewing? Besides, I'm pretty sure a lot of professional critics gave the first Ferngully movie decent reviews.
As for my opinion of Ferngully... We watched it pretty much every year in science class when I was a kid, but I always thought it was kind of boring. Not necessarily bad, but just really boring. (wasn't a fan of overdoing the message of the story either) For a sequel, I didn't even know there was one until a couple of months ago. Needless to say I'm glad I didn't know of it. D8
-
01.12.2011 - 20:16 | Shiradori
You watched Fern Gully in science class? What SCIENCE was in that movie? Fruit bats don't use echolocation, I don't see any golden whistlers or lyrebirds in an Australian rain forest as you expect, and why are there only white people in Fern Gully??? Also, as Nostalgia Chick pointed out, the beef industry, at least in the early 90's, was just as responsible for rainforest destruction, if not more so, than the timber industry....Wow. That is a new low for American scientific education. :/
-
01.16.2011 - 15:34 | Marshmallowcreampie
Well, we just watched it every year when there was "Earth Day" or "Green Week" or some other BS the school decided to celebrate so they can pretend they care about things so they look better to the public. We weren't expected to take the film with scientific merit, they just wanted to show us something that had a "save the Earth!" message.
But honestly, they could've (or hell, should've) showed us a better movie. Ferngully was lame and overly preachy. If you want a good environmental movie, watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Way better, way cooler, way more interesting. I'd listen to Nausicaa over Crysta any day! Pom Poko is also a great film, even though it's pretty preachy it's still funny. (however, it's not appropriate for school. And don't watch it with your parents.)
On a side note here, does anyone else think "The Magical Rescue" is an incredibly bland title?
By the way, NC, I'm totally diggin' the animation and music for Sequels Month. XD
-
01.26.2011 - 17:17 | moonymonsterThey made you watch it in science? What the hell else were they teaching, the dark arts? Seriously Fairies and talking bats have no place in a serious class...even for Earth Day. (No, especially for it. And you're totally right about Nausicaa...though I'm sure they're showing Avatar instead now.)
And the Magical Rescue wasn't even very discriptive, considering almost no fairy magic was used. Mostly it was the humans running around being brave and the fairies running around being ADD. Not much magic. -_-
-
01.12.2011 - 22:48 | THOOM
No one said you had to bow your head in agreeement that it was bad. But those critics also have a right to not like the movie.
I do agree that Avatar was wholly unoriginal, but if you think that FernGully was the inspiration, and that it was the first of it's kind, you are mistaken. Both movies are bland and cliche-ridden.

Ferngully was lame. The characters were forgettable and unoriginal, whereas Secret of NIHM had characters who were actually interesting. Ferngully had a rather dull plotline, it was simply "save the rainforest" and nothing more, like it was written by a lazy environmentalist who thought hammering in the message that "rainforests are fabulous" constantly would make kids follow it. (fun fact: Good pro-environment movies do exist. They're the ones that have good writing and don't shout the message to the viewer every ten minutes or make it look like humans are the devil)
Anyway, on this video... This movie looks bad, but seeing as how I'm not over how bad Neverending Story 3 was, well, I'm not as annoyed by this movie as I normally would be. This movie seems more boring than the first, and the animation is lazier, but on the plus side, at least the whole "humans as evil bastards" message is toned down significantly.
With that said, I can't wait to see the Secret of NIHM 2 review. NC is totally gonna flip shit when the first musical number comes. XD
-
Good pro-environment movies do exist. They're the ones that don't require the destruction of the environment for paper to draw them on...
And oddly enough, I spent over the last 8 years catching mental fragments of NIMH from my memory and never quite recalling what it was from...Then the Critic showed it off in one of his Top 11, I believe. A great relief to my memory...(Many other things drifted unknown through my memory for years in the same way...Futurama, Good Burger, Prince of Egypt...)
I've yet to revisit the film though. I think I just might have to now, to better enjoy the sequel's review.
Also, Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio are planning to reboot The Neverending Story specifically BECAUSE of how bad its sequels were. Hopefully some better effects can be used without turning it into Avatar (the Falkor puppet always bugged me - it's like a bad dub of a Godzilla film whenever it's 'talking'). I am excited yet cautious.

The characters in NIMH are WAY better than what you'll find in Ferngully, but the Crow in NIMH was a pain. For every scene I saw him in it was like having a needle impaling my arm VERY VERY slowly, but finally goes out once the Crow is off scene. I guess thats pretty extreme, but he was very, very, very annoying.

I watched both Fern Gully and the Secret of Nimh. And surprisingly I liked both. Sure the Secret of Nimh was more personal for me because I could relate alot of my own mother into the character Mrs. Brisby and loved its dark non-whimsical take on family unity and the courage to never give up what you believe is right. But it didn't mean I prefered one over the other...
As for Fern Gully, if you were like me and tuned out the not so subtle enviromental issue it was a pretty good story about a bunch of fairies fighting to save thier homeland. That was pretty much it.
However I could just look at the trailer for both of their sequels and know right away I would be content to just watching Fern Gully than Fern Gully 2 anyday.

I didn't think Mulan 2 was that bad. The music wasn't as memorable as the first one, yeah, but some parts of the movie itself were really good.
Now, bad Disney sequel? Lion King "One-Half" or whatever. Annoying comic relief characters from the first - otherwise epic, for a kids' film - movie become the main characters! Yaaaay, my worst nightmare!
-
Am I the only person in the world who thought Lion King 1 1/2 didn't suck. :(
I didn't find the movie so bad... I think it just depends on how you look at it. If you view it as an actually movie then yeah odds are you'll be disappointment but if you view it like a DVD special feature or something it's pretty entertaining and you get to learn a bit more about them.
Though it probably helps that I enjoyed the supporting comic relief characters in the first place. :/

It's a well known fact that bats can carry up to 20 times their own weight. No, wait, that's radioactive spiders.
So I guess this month is dedicated to bad sequels in general, not just sequels to movies that have already been reviewed. I was wondering why I couldn't find the review for the first Secret of Nimh movie.

One thing that is nice about sequel month is that all the movies are legitimately terrible.
Way to make all the characters less interesting then they were. I can answer your question about why doesn't she shrink them like she did in the last movie, she did that by mistake last time...and this is a shitty movie.
Jeezuz...Bat holding 12 year old girl...that's some BUULLSHIT!
Good review, can't go to into this weird cash in of a movie and it's better when it's not remembered it exists. I liked the 1st one pretty well, and cause it's missing Jim Curry, this sequel stinks.

Not only was you review of the first Ferngully the first crossover you did, it was also your first episode in widescreen.
0:50- =(
I just love it when you talk about …MAN! (Cue dramatic music)
Only one thing came to mind when Batty turned into a general, and it was “Batty, you stupid b@$terd, I read your book, AND I HATED IT!!!”
I just hope the proposed sequel to “Avatar” won’t be as stupid and boring as this. (Note: I think of “Avatar” as a good movie.)
11:32- I really enjoy how you make the extra step of the M. Bisen joke, Doug.
12:03- Wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off, bed goes up, bed goes down, bed goes up, bed goes down…
16:39- Physics? What’s that?
I agree that “Ferngully” isn’t the worst sequel (the honor goes to “Highlander 2” and “NeverEnding Story 3”), but it’s one of the weakest.
Man, I can’t wait for next week’s episode so I can finally see how bad “Secret of NIMH 2” is, but first, I need to see the first movie for my first time.
-
01.12.2011 - 00:22 | DarkMessiah
I loved Avatar, so I would hope that their sequel is good too. But at the same time, they didn't have much to go on. The main point on both movies (Ferngully and Avatar) was that the humans were destroying their home.
So is Avatar's sequel gonna be about Jake taking a road trip with Norman to the oceans while Neytiri stays at home with their child, while also helping wounded thanators in the forest? Yeah, THAT'LL go well. >_>
