Stephen King has such a weird face, he does not need make-up to star in a Horror movie.

I hated clowns long before seeing this movie. Maybe because I saw Poltergeist at an early age.. no, no, I hated clowns and puppets in general as far back as I can remember.

I always felt IT was one of the weakest King novels.

I honestly think IT is a pretty good movie despite the Stephen King's tropes.

The movie always bored me to tears. It's so disjointed.

Some say The Dark Tower was the only truly awesome thing Stephen King ever wrote.

I can't stand The Dark Tower. Honestly.
I love Carrie, It, Misery, The Shining, all of his old works. But I tried reading The Dark Tower and found it too dull to bare. I couldn't finish it.

Depends on the book in the series.

The first and final books? Bloody masterpieces.

Wizard and Glass? Not so much.

I picked up the first book in the Dark Tower series one day and tried very hard to give it a go because my best friend was absolutely in love with it at the time. I just couldn't finish it. Couldn't even make it half way, I found it such a tedious chore.

Delores Claiborne is probably the only King book I've really appreciated. Wouldn't put it in my top 100, but I found it quite readable. I guess he's just one of those authors you have to have a taste for. I wouldn't say I don't ever find his stories scary, it's more the stories themselves.

Also, it's bodies that float? Doesn't that spider thingie live down in, like, a sewer or something? Cos you know what else floats down there... that's kind of... yeah... the image I always got from that line. Maybe I'm just being obvious.
  • Crunchy_Frog
"He singlehandedly created Morgan Freeman's career." LOL
The Magic Hispano is usually a woman. The medium in Poltergeist was one, for example. The Magic Negro character can be either gender. But that trope is odler than dirt. May it go back to the Three Wise Men from the East in the Gospels? Anyway, in older stories the Wise Guy is usually some old (white) monk or wizard with a beard.
  • ladydiskette  - What about the movie "Glory"?
    avatar
In that movie Morgan Freeman was kinda what you would call the "Knowingly Sage" character or that is what they described his character as...although I am not sure if standing there staring strangely at specific people and smiling knowingly is considered sagely.

I find that King is really good at setting up a situation but all the books I've read of his have disappointing endings.

The movie is alright...Until you read the book.

I watched the movie YEARS before I ever even heard of Stephen King. Eventually I became a fan and got my hands on the book...The film promptly became garbage.

However...Compared to the film version of The Langoliers, this is like..Inception good. Langoliers is honestly THAT bad.

King is notorious for being translated into awful films (exceptions for Misery and The Shining). IT and Dreamcatcher are really terrible on film.

Honestly, I tend to find more horror in his short stories...But Misery was pretty creepy. Shame they toned that down for the film but Kathy Bates still owned that role.

Another great King story that became a lousy film: The Tommyknockers, right down to the cheesy alien suits.

The Stand had a fairly decent mini-series, at least. Great book but I still have major issues with the deus ex machina ending. Needful Things was a good book, the film was so-so.

What always got me rolling my eyes during this movie though (even back when I enjoyed it) is when Pennywise ducks his head down then pops up with that fang-filled carnivore face. It's just...Not scary. I mean, if that were a real scenario, I'd probably soil myself in terror because it's a goddamn monster, but as far as the film...It's just a goofy shot. And they recycle it constantly, so it just gets goofier.

Bottom line though: King doesn't translate well to film, at least not with the cheesy effects they used in IT and Tommyknockers. I love the guy's work despite the flaws but they just make awful movies.

Hey! I really liked The Langoliers TV movie!
But then, I haven't seen it in years and I loved 'Maxium Overdrive', too.

Ygdrasel, most of the King films you dissed were TV movies, and the main movies you praised were theatrical movies. That may have something to do with the quality (Unless you were praising the King-approved 'Shining' TV Movie?Otherwise, Comparing Stanley Kubrick to a TV director? I call foul! LOL)

The one King (TV) Movie that bored the spit out of me was Golden Years. I couldn't get through it.

Many of the King novels-turned-theatrical releases were great, though. Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, Cujo and Carrie. I read a couple of those books and the movies were just as satisfying. I was disappointed by The Green Mile, because I read the much better book, but I suppose many people liked that one.

I wish they'd make a 'Regulators' movie, but that might prove...difficult.

What about The Green Mile? That was a Stephen King book turned film and it was a great movie.

And the the looking up into a fanged and crazy eyed monster thing always spooked me even to this day. It's a genuinely creepy face.

The first Stephen King movie I saw was The Nightwalkers. The special effects were so laughably bad. I thought I would get the same enjoyment from Pet Semetary. I did not. It was actually pretty frightening.

Anyway, my point is that one thing you cannot predict about a Stephen King movie is whether or not it's good.

Honestly my favorite author ever. I've been reading him since I was eleven years old and after two years I finally finished all of his 55 books. Just finished Full Dark No Stars. I like the movie I saw that you were reviewing it so I went out and bought the DVD and rewatched the film. I like to nostalgic feel of it. I loved his books and the movies were great.

Okay, don't worry now, I don't mean to nitpick or blame you for getting it WRONG!!11 I just want to comment. x)

I think Morgan Freeman's character was originally white. Not sure though, but I think so because I remember being surprised when I read the book. Okay, seriously, I'm doubting myself now so somebody tell me if I'm remembering it wrong or something. Oh and I read the Finnish translation so it might even be just that the mention of race was cut for some weird reason (not the first time it's happened; they censored Dean's race in the Finnish translation of Harry Potter and all other possible mentions of race too).

Besides, I don't really think he was that much of a Magical Negro in Shawshank Redemption. Maybe more like a Black Sidekick, as much as it's possible in that story. (Besides, in a way, Red is the real protagonist of the story. Or that's how I always felt like.)

Other than that though... yeah, the Green Mile one is obvious case of Magical Negro at least. And... okay that's all I've read from King. *cough* Maybe I should try some of those that you recommended.

ETA: Oh and thanks for doing these commentaries, they're seriously fun and interesting to listen to.
  • minor_fifth
I'm pretty sure you're right and that Red isn't black originally. I think that was part of the joke when Andy asked why he was called Red, and he deadpanned, "Maybe because I'm Irish" (because in the story, he actually is an Irish redhead).
  • Vismutti
    avatar
Yeah, I know. :D It makes it all the more funny.
  • THOOM

I read the book first and there was only one line that suggest Red's race in it: Red says he got his name because he's Irish, so I assumed he was a red headed white guy and they just changed the race for the movie.

But then I saw the movie, Morgan Freeman's character has the same name and says the same line about being Irish and it's played for laughs.

I liked IT as a kid. The part with the kids are the best part though to be honest, I get slightly less interested at the adult part. Is it perfect? No. Is it horrible or even a bad movie? I personally would not say so. And congrats Doug! =D

I'm going to get this out the way. TIM CURRY IS A WHORE! Not in the sexual terms but in the fact he appears in movies that are garbage. I've seen at least 5 movies on this site that he's been apart of that are just awful. Beauty and the Beast 2, and this for example.
  • Morgoth Bauglir
    avatar
He's just a hard-working actor. Nothing wrong with that.
  • Floweramon
It's called doing your job. Not every movie an actor is in is going to be good, and Tim Curry strikes me as someone who loves acting. So even if he's in a bad movie he's going to do his job and probably have fun with the part he has because he simply loves acting.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you. I'm just saying Bruce Willis is also in a lot of movies.

Now that I think of it, Will Ferrell is in a lot of dumb comedies. I have nothing against people who like his movies, though.

  • Sheranda
    avatar
Actually, that's not a bad idea. I think I can imagine that.
  • Dechha1981  - Langoleers
Yeah the Langoleers made VERY little sense. You travel back in time butit turns out when you go back in time there's no one there because everything's already used. and there's things that destroy everything and...

I'm gonna stop right there because it's one of those things that the more you think about it the less sense it makes.

Also, EErie Indiana ripped off The Langoleers but they used garbage men instead of... Giant Madballs?
  • tootired  - It's not time travel
It's more like traveling into a different dimension or rather a side reality.
  • THOOM
    avatar
The 1986 "Twilight Zone" series used that idea also, but used moving men instead of metal madballs.

And compared to a little Spanish piece of garbage movie called "Time Crimes", "Langoliers" is a classic in the time/space genre.
  • logicsniper
The book scared me so much I never finished it. The film literally bored me to sleep. :P

I'm putting in a vote for the Langoliers review. That was the first Stephen King movie I ever saw. I was 14, and it was the most confused I'd ever been up to that point. What... raisonettes with teeth... what is happening...
  • Psychodozer  - Balloons

I do believe that in the end, in the bath scene, you also could write "shIT" instead of "balloons". Well, you know... "IT"... "shIT"... No? Ok.

I don't want to be rude but I enjoyed this movie, it wasn't paticularly scary but more intresting.

Yeah the adult actors where crap, I enjoyed a lot of Stephen King's Movies, Langoliers I enjoyed to but not as much as this movie.

Finally signed up to comment after lurking for the past three months. :D

The very first time I discovered your videos was when someone posted your IT review on livejournal and instantly fell in love (in a non, creepy fangirl-ish way). Felt it was only appropriate to say hi. :3

    I will admit that IT does scare me, but actually, thanks to your review, it doesn't bother me as much as before because I see how stupid it really is. But I am terrified of clowns, so stupid Pennywise still gets me. Even during your review and commentary I actually put my hand on the screen to cover his stupid face. -_-' I'm a wuss, I know. Actually, it was this movie that really made me scared of clowns. I was only eight years old when I saw it, and I'd always thought clowns were a little creepy anyways, but then I saw this and died a little inside. ;___;

I read part of the book when I was thirteen and got halfway through until I stopped, because it was just so damn boring to me and it felt tedious reading it. I also tried to read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and stopped because that bored me more. As a writer, I have mad respect for Stephen King, but I'm just not into his books, although I do want to read Carrie, Misery and Stand By Me because I really love the movies (except for Misery, haven't seen that one yet.) But IT is just stupid.

Great video, definitely loved the commentary. I kept shaking my head and saying "I know, right?!" Everytime one of you made a good point (so pretty much the whole time).

My only problem with this is, you and Rob sound SO MUCH alike, I seriously couldn't tell who was talking at first! XD

long comment is long. Anyway, you're both awesome! 8D As always. :)
