I know I am not doing any better than MrKnockout, but we all know you were posting right there just so you can get to near the top of the page.
I can especially tell because your comment time was only 8 minutes after this 23 minute video. If I were you, actually do the opposite of what you're against before mentioning any negatives about it

You do realize that these videos appear on blip.tv long before they're posted on this site, right? It's very possible to watch the entire thing on Blip, and then post a comment here immediately as the video appears. Although I seriously doubt this is what happened, it's just something to keep in mind.

12.09.2010 - 02:07 | SLICKNICKwell theres a "next top 11 fuck up" well a slight one but still a fuck up. at the beggining of the video NC talks about the classic universal monster performances, ie boris kalof aS the frankinstein monster and bella legusi. the way its worded and with the inclusion of karlof you imply your honoring legos'is performance of "dracula". that picture however is not taken from "dracula" it is taken from "mark of the vampire". a 1935 remake of "london after midnight". now it could be said that is the movie you meant. but... legosi oly had one line and 2 min in the film.

This was a phenomenal list Doug. Your brilliant analysis on said characters coined as a representation or to be more precise; a societal reflection found within said characters were nothing short of inspiring! At first I was confused with your last choice but with your steady prose and sharp eye I quickly understood your reasoning and applaud your choice. These so called monsters offer society a glimpse of what is quickly becoming a norm in our present civilization and that in essence is the true horror, not a bogeyman, not a man in a hockey mask but rather your next door neighbor, a devoted fan or even an ex partner- these 'monsters' are everywhere, and they represent the ills that plague our existence to this day. Thank you for this video Doug, it was insightful, inspiring and most of all unsettling. Continue the great work, you are a unique voice rising high above the static that is the fluid mundane. =)

O_O
Well, break out the coffee and energy drinks. It looks like I'm not getting any rest tonight.
But all joking aside, terrific list, Doug. I must admit that 2 and 1 didn't come to much of a surprise to me, and I love that you chose them... but watching this countdown is as close as I'll ever get to watching... "that" #2 movie.
And my all-night-er commences...

Actually, i was wondering why Robert Englund from NIghtmare on Elm Street wasn't on there. he's always had this aura of inevitability, because you know as animals we must sleep, so there isno way to avoid him. He is very much like death (what he represents) in this way. Also, he always hit close to home, killing where we all feel safest...our dreams. Plus, he always had a sinister enjoyment and humor about his sadistic acts. But other than that, i really enjoyed your choices.

I think that the more 'comic' turn of Freddy after the first movie really blinds people to how great the character was in the first film. In Part 2 he's still pretty sinister, but many people just can't get over the gay (sub)text in that film. Part 3 was great, but Freddy was less sinister and more 'movie monster', but not yet the jokey pop-culture mish-mash he became for Parts 4-6.
I would have had him on this list over HAL, but not in Number 1 spot.
-
I agree with you, but I think I have an explanation, too. Doug only did a Top 11. Seriously, who among those performances would you leave out? Who would get the boot for Freddy? Not saying Freddy isn't terrifying in his own right, it's just that there are many terrifying characters in film. Freddy just didn't make this (realistically short) list. I can bet you 20 bucks he would have been on the list if it was Top 15.

MrKnockout, I must say that your icon is completely and in all ways awesome. You have to tell me where you found that picture mate, because it's great. =D
Good to see a list of this sort from you Doug. I had a good idea on some of them, like the Joker and Alex, and was definitely not expecting a few, such as Anton. In all honesty, I'm surprised I didn't see HAL coming. I guess I just wasn't thinking of him, because he is definitely deserving of the top spot.
There was a couple I was surprised to see weren't here, such as Michael Myers and Harry from Night of the Hunter, but those are just my opinions. Either way, it's a good list.
Also, forgive me if the name of the song was in the video and I just completely missed it, but does anyone know the song that played at the beginning and at each number? Thanks. =)
-
10.13.2010 - 11:46 | mrskippy
Maybe you weren't seeing HAL coming because it's not really a performance in the traditional sense of the word, in the same way that Microsoft SAM isn't a performance. I'm sure that if they had used that voice, it would have been just as creepy. It was all in the writing.
Not to diminish the creepiness of the character, but I certainly wouldn't have put HAL as #1...just because that opens too many doors. Why not Pyramid Head? It's just as much of a "performance."
-
10.13.2010 - 21:15 | Dgtlrnn042But HAL was voiced by a real person; Douglas Rain, who did an excellent job keeping his voice monotone. Hard to do for most actors. If you listen closely you can even hear him taking a breath in between lines.
Also note: I don't think they had voice software in 1968 ^_^
-
10.14.2010 - 16:42 | VictimOfThe90sThe reason why HAL sings that Daisy song is because a few years ago IBM managed it to make a computer sing that song. Though the software which was used was probably not comparable with what we have today.

Michael Myers is one of a thousand silver screen serial killers and boogeymen with no distinguishing characteristics, no different than Jason Voorhees, Frankenstein or Sabretooth from the first X-Men movie. Yes, a serial killer is scary in real life, but a fictional serial killer like MM has nothing on this list.

10.14.2010 - 06:34 | QuestionTheMajority
I've been responding to a lot of these posts, so I'll just stop with this one! XD
Anyway, I was personally upset when Doug said that Lector was an unrealistic serial killer. In all truth, serial killers, more often than not, are far more like Hannibal Lector than Buffalo Bill. They're often highly intelligent and sophisticated. Their sick behavior comes from a sense of boredom and a desire to have a new challenge. People like Buffalo Bill give you a weird feeling right from the start and you know there's something wrong with him even if you don't think he's a killer. But you wouldn't know Lector was evil unless you were told. Most serial killers are perfect at hiding who they really are in this respect. I found him far scarier than Bill because of the realism of the character.
And then there was his mentioning of Ledger's Joker. =_= Ugh. I just don't get why everyone is so bonkers over that portrayal. I just don't. It seemed very cookie-cutter to me. Standard evil movie baddie. Nothing unique. As far as Jokers go, I think Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill were the best. Both made the character very funny AND very scary. And, again, I don't get the complaints about the Joker being unrealistic. He's actually based on two specific serial killers who also had an obsession with comedy. His single-minded insanity is a textbook example of a serial killer's mind whereas the Joker in the Dark Knight was just all over the place.
Overall, great list, but I just had to say my piece about those two.
-
10.14.2010 - 06:37 | QuestionTheMajority
-
10.14.2010 - 21:51 | SqueejeeI don't know about other people, but I prefer Ledger's Joker to any others because it seemed much scarier than others. Sure, there are moments when Hamill and Nicholson were freaky, but ledger was downright TERRIFYING from the first moment you see him, and maintained humor despite that fact (the entire theater erupted in laughter when he made the pencil disappear, for example).
And what do you mean by "cookie cutter?" Ledger's interpretation was anything but unoriginal. And if you thought he was "all over the place" you weren't paying very close attention - he had a set goal in mind, which he pursued without pause to the end: to make others see that they were every bit as depraved as he was.
I agree with you on Lector, though - I think he should have come in second.
-
10.17.2010 - 02:28 | LaotzuI would dispute your claim that Hannibal Lecter was a realistic serial killer. Can you give examples of actual serial killers who were like Hannibal Lecter?
"Another myth that exists is that serial killers have either a debilitating mental condition, or they are extremely clever and intelligent.
As a group, serial killers suffer from a variety of personality disorders, including psychopathy, anti-social personality, and others. Most, however, are not adjudicated as insane under the law.
The media has created a number of fictional serial killer “geniuses”, who outsmart law enforcement at every turn. Like other populations, however, serial killers range in intelligence from borderline to above average levels."

-
01.16.2011 - 21:42 | bassbaitThat's actually opposite of the truth. The majority of Serial killers are very Buffalo Bill style. In fact, that's what being a Sociopath and Psychopath is. It's highly unlikely for someone to kill because of boredom. It's mainly a compulsion. Lecter is the LEAST likely kind of serial killer. The most likely is someone with a haunted past who gains a specific obsession and it turns from an obsession into murder - just like how Bill wanted to be a woman, most serial killers have this goal that, in their mind, they can only achieve through murder. Hardly is a serial killer charming. They just can attract a crowd of desperate people.

I liked the list and all the performances were great, but I was a bit disappointed that Michael Myers didn't make it on here. He's devoid of humanity, he kills whoever he wants and the idea that he cannot die but only be slowed down really scared me for the first movie.
This little bit into his psyche didn't hurt his scary factor either:

01.16.2011 - 21:47 | bassbaitYes, it is mine too! And it should be everyone's. Seriously, screw Citizen Kane, 2001: a Space Odyssey is the most important film ever released. It got us into space, it influenced the development of big budget pictures, took Science Fiction and finally made it serious business, introduced tons of concepts that would later be elaborated by other great film-makers, revolutionized film as art. It is the best looking film ever made, the most mind-blowing film ever made, the most original film ever made, and by far, the best film ever made.
So why does nobody like it? It's seriously good enough to make The Godfather look weak. Orson Welles was a good director, but Citizen Kane is seriously small potatoes to the masterpiece that is 2001.

11. I wonder if it was HE who inspired Anton.
10. Robert Patrick did a fine as Hell performance in T2. The T-1000, he's unstoppable, ...except in extreme tempretures.
9. I haven't seen this film from start to finish yet, and everything you said here shows why.
8. I enjoy Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lector. I've only seen "Silence of the Lambs," but I do hope to one day see the other two films. By the way, NC (not Doug), you sir put the "inhuman" in "inhumanity."
7. Malcom Macdowell is a great performer, but his role in films like "Caligula" are ...just... weird to me.
6. I've seen all of the original "Phycho," and it defines the word masterpiece. Also, the remake almost reminds me of the Irate Gamer's "work."
5. o_O (quietly) Wow.
4. This is my favorite scary performance on this list because of a few things:
a. I love the Christopher Nolan Batman films.
b. I enjoy how realistic, and scary, they made The Joker.
c. (Most importantly) He just may be the most deadly, strategic, insane, and intelligent supervillain to ever walk in the comic book world.
3. I like to see Joker and Two-Face beat Anton to a pulse.
2. I really need to see "Exorcist" from start to finish some time.
1. I'd like to see both HAL and Skynet duke it out.
I'll be ready for your review of "It."
