It's really sad to see Don Bluth pop up so often in the Critic's reviews, I mean yes the man has made some real stinkers in his career but you gotta admit, the man is very original when it comes to style and not conforming to Disneyfied ADHD induced bullcrap that we see today. How marvelous is the world of animation though? It has been around for almost a thousand years, and with it we gain a new perspective, a new idea on how to perceive the world around us. There are so many variations that take the breath away! Clay Animation, Hand Drawn, Digital and now flash based! Who knows what the future could bring? I am saddened however that over here in the states we tend to gravitate towards the next big technology, tossing the old tried and true methods behind like yesterday's rubbish. I find that insulting to individual progress. I say know your roots and become inspired. Yes to evolve is the way of life, but it doesn't hurt to look back and examine what has come before you! The songs of the past sing softly, but if you listen hard enough I bet you'll be dancing again to a familiar beat, and that my friends is just divine! =D

10.05.2010 - 18:18 | Project_HAnd that is precisely why "The Princess and the Frog" was made i believe. Among the seemingly endless PIXAR 3D animated films, it seemed that Disney had long forgotten the magic of good old fashion traditional hand drawn animation. Thank goodness it wasn't so. Also i get a better kick out of listening to some Sinatra, Lou Armstrong (oldschool jazz)some classic symphony or just some good old fashion Rock and Roll/Heavy Metal than listening to the mundane, manufactured, artificially produced mindless drivel called modern music.
The old ways are certainly great but innovation cannot be overlooked. Finding a balance between tradition and new customs, to me is very important when it comes to the Entertainment Industry. I so long the days when Disney aired Mickey Mouse cartoons and not the rehashed teenybopper sitcoms of today *cough* Hannah Montana *Cough*

Wow! The Pebble and the Penguin! I remember when I saw this movie for the first time. I hated it even when I was a kid! I thought it was really bad. And in my child's eye the main reason was because the penguins has teeth! "Why do they have teeth? Penguins are birds, they shouldn't have teeth!" I had thought and said.
I must say, this is, by far, one of Don Bluth's worst movies! And THAT's saying a lot. He's made a ton of bad movies. Which is a shame, because he's made just as many good movies. Like the Critic said, look at "The Secret of NIMH", "An American Tail", and "The Land Before Time"! Those are some GREAT movies, and in my opinion, some of Bluth's best work! I also think "Titan A.E." was good, but I don't think a lot of people agree with me on that one.
Overall great review, Doug! Thank you!
-
09.29.2010 - 00:05 | IceholderYeah, I remember seeing Titan A.E. when it first came out, and I remember liking it. Apparently, like you said, though, not a lot of people agree about that.
I'll have to find a copy of it to see why it is people don't like it as much as they do.
-
I happen to be one of those that actually found Titan AE very compelling and quite the pleasure to watch. The music kicked ass in it, and it was animated Star Wars to me minus the light sabers. I was actually kind of surprised that NC counted that movie as a bad one. O_o Yeah it didn't do well in the theaters, but it wasn't a "Quest for Camolot" failure.
Oh well, to each is own I always say. :P
I would like to see his reasoning however as to why he thinks that movie is bad.... :talkbiz:
-
09.29.2010 - 11:53 | LowBrassDudeIn recent years Titan AE has become a cult film, and many reviewers and critics absolutely love it. I'd hate to see NC give a bad review of it though.
-
Doug always picks apart a movie for all the right reasons, and even when he makes fun of a movie I like, I can totally understand why he feels that way. Besides, even when it's insignificant nitpicking, as long as it's funny, I can forgive just about anything lol.
I will say that I am also one of those people who enjoyed Titan: A.E. when I first watched it, but it's been years since I did... time to pull out the DVD and see if it still holds up lol.
Am I the only one creeped out whenever one of those penguins smiles, or even just exposes their teeth :scared:?

09.29.2010 - 16:34 | QuestionTheMajority
No. No you are not. Actually, I was beginning to wonder if my brother and I were the only two people in the world who disliked Don Bluth's art style. Hubie and whatever his girlfriend's name is are like the living embodiment of everything that creeps us out about Don Bluth art: Bulging eyeballs, mouths that are grotesquely rubbery and wrinkly, and horrifically swollen cheeks and jowls that seem as though the characters are always storing food for the winter in their faces.
Honestly, I've always hated the art in his movies. I hated it when I was a kid and I hate it now. And, more often than not, it gives me the creeps as in the case of these godforsaken penguins.
-
09.30.2010 - 16:30 | Dragon_NexusI remember thinking there were some weird plot moments for the film.
Like Preed's sudden about turn in personality when Lonesta-, erm I mean Cpt Joseph Korso became evil. He went from a little nutty to outright evil in one scene change.
That and seeing the cut scenes made me wish they hadn't cut them...since many really added to the story and character development.
As a kid when I first watched it, I remember the opening scenes with Earth being destroyed really unsettled me for ages afterwards. They tried the Disney Singing Birds trick to lighten the mood but I was still in shock XD

10.04.2010 - 11:22 | Cameron WinterI also have to join those objecting to NC's dismissal of Titan AE.
Its still one of my favourite movies of all time and it actually reveiwed very well on release. I think it also deserves props for being a very un-Don-Bluth Don Bluth movie.
I mean, it opens with the deliberate and near total genocide of the Human race by aliens and features, to my knowlage at least, the first example of an animated neck-snapping in American animation.

09.30.2010 - 06:23 | mousesquisherI really liked Titan A.E. except for the one pointless part where he's piloting the ship. Even the first time I watched I was like, "come on already, move the story". Never realized it was a Bluth movie

Titan A.E and Anastasia were the most underrated of his films. They weren't perfect but they were better than the juvenile garbage he was doing earlier. It helped that Fox gave him a REAL budget and more creative freedom.I frankly didn't like his association with Spielberg since he was the one calling the shots. That led to the fallout and and the downside in quality. Nelvana suffered that same fate when they went from Rock and Rule to the Care Bears Movie.

Well, The Penguin was stealing children, so that would make since. Very creepy and twisted sense.
This was one of those movies that gave me a headache as a kid. I don't mind songs in movies, I actually like Newsies, but here the songs had no real reason to exist. Hell, a lot of Don Bluth's later films really didn't need songs. But, it worked for Disney so it works for him.
Your attempted suicide brought back fond memories of the much better film Groundhog's Day. And, similar to Bill Murray's character, your doomed to forever relive awful movies.

Bird at 3:42 is like *facepalm* to the "colors" lyric. I remember trying to watch this as a kid, I got bored about a fourth of the way through and never finished it. Seems to me that it was a good decision.
One other thing Doug, Leopard Seals have been known to get that big, just throwing it out there.

That's common if animators animate a lot of works. Look at Butch Hartman.
I rather liked Titan AE though...
The three worst works of Don Bluth are this, Rock-A-Doodle and Troll in Central Park. If I had to sum them up, I'd say what Gordon, Henry and James said in Thomas the Tank Engine:
Disgraceful! said Gordon

Disgusting! put in James

...Wouldn't that be a bit of a misplaced review? I think Thomas had a younger demographic than Care Bears or Pound Puppies. Granted, the Star Wars Christmas Special is lower, what with the "dead-to-1" demographic, but... hell, it's Thomas the Train! The show (they played it to at my preschool) never aspired to much, and the movie (my siblings made me watch it) aspired to less.

Yeah, I know it's bad. And I was really surprised to hear you say that it wasn't that terrible, as TVTropes had me believing the Internet thought completely otherwise. But I do remember really liking this movie as a kid and I still have a soft spot for it.
Also, I'd like to politely correct you. *animal nerd here* It is possible for a Leopard Seal to get that big. The biggest bulls can get up to 1,000 pounds and be over 10 feet long. Where Adele Penguins are only about 18 to 30 inches tall. So if Hubie is really small and the seal is really big... the proportions would still be off, but not by that much. (I don't recall Rockhoppers being very big either) (Source: Wikipedia) Though I got nothing on the whole Rocko-learning-to-fly bit. *facepalm*
Great review as always, Doug!
-
09.29.2010 - 01:06 | ttime23I have to admit that I rather enjoyed this movie when I was younger too. Then again, not much of it ever made sense to me and it was like blinking to get me into the "suspension of disbelief" area.
Good grief, I never realized how much music was in this. Thanks for shoving it down our throats, Barry. I felt like smothering myself with my pillow. And the only song that I slightly remembered was the "Don't Make Me Laugh" number which I hated to the core :grr:
Also: Oh Yeah for Portal references!! XD
One other thing: Did you ever notice how many times the color of Rocko's ascot changed? Even if it were dusk the color wouldn't go from orange to blue and then to chartreuse =_=

09.28.2010 - 20:59 | Pye Like EyeOdd, when I heard the title I thought it was a romance between a penguin and an actual pebble. Hey, if a dog and a dolphin can do it, this isn't that far-fetched.

09.28.2010 - 22:14 | Moreno XDoug, I wanted to say that this movie that you said it’s the least bad film that Don Bluth made is what chained me to not hate this film so much in regards that it was expected to be even the worst Don Bluth film than “A Troll in Central Park”. Why? Because The Pebble and the Penguin is the film I watched over, and over and over and over again as a kid. Even back then, when I saw the entire film, I was aware that in reality Penguins cannot fly, and when the scene shows us that Rocko saves Hubie and Marina, and takes flight without flapping his wings (or hands I should say). Because of that, along with everything else that made this film so bad, it was treated as THE worst film than A Troll in Central Park.
I don’t know I never saw A Troll in Central Park nor Thumbelina. I watch Rock-A-Doddle a lot too and I think that film wasn’t that bad either, even you already made some points and problems that film had as well. Like Rock-A-Doddle, The Pebble and the Penguin is a tiny guilty pleasure for me.
^_^ I’m serious. I mean, I’m not questioning the reality of why the filmmakers of this movie decided to make Rocko fly even though he’s a penguin and penguins don’t fly. You see, years ago I watch this movie for the first time on VHS. At the beginning of the tape before the movie plays, I watch an live-action segment of a female host at the Antarctica area talking about the inspiration of Don Bluth and his team’s interests to make a film about penguins: where they live, eat, mate, survive, etc. Now, when I saw that segment, it’s the reason why I’m not interested in questioning of this movie’s decision to make penguins – particularly Rocko – fly in animated film. In other words, in the world of animated films, filmmakers challenge reality and adapted them differently in animated films as long as we can either understand it’s own limits and not be too harsh to let films like The Pebble and the Penguin make fun of our intelligences. :sigh: And boy, this is why people who grew up with this film are furious and couldn’t believe they fell for it. Even critics like Siskel and Ebert hated this film too not because of destroying reality’s credibility but also hated the cheap animation, bad unmemorable songs, silly characters and dumb premise starting the protagonists that even we can relate to them in some areas, we don’t want to. Furthermore, we don’t take Hubie and Marina’s love life serious because it’s all forced and absurd.
Doug, if you saw a YouTube user name “thatgalwiththebraids”, she review the movie and stated she didn’t like it as much as you do. If you haven’t saw her review, check it out. Her review of this movie is SO the opposite from yours. I’m sure she’ll be disappointed (or better, surprised) that you’re not that harsh or hard on The Pebble and the Penguin than she does.
Here, this is her review video on YouTube:

So whats left in his closet of failure that you can review? Please say Titan A.E. that would be so awesome. IT'S GOT ALIENS AND ROBOTS! And a ship that somehow can create a planet just because...Science?
Anyways this movie wasn't that terrible but it's still terrible. I kept thinking "Rocky Horror Penguin" every time Tim Curry's character came up and I don't know why. Also your reference to Evil Dead 2 made me go watch it again because it's much more entertaining than this movie. so much more...
