Doug you forgot to mention Glenn Close's cameo as the pirate who got thrown into the Boo Box at 08:54 into the review. Kudos for spotting Carrie Fisher, George Lucas and Phil Collins though. I have fond memories of this film, it may not be perfect but is certainly a sentimental yarn I hope to share with my daughter soon. Keep up the marvelous work! I adore your satirical critique on all things nostalgic!

See, I go the other way. Hook was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, and I still love it today! It'll be one of those movies that will always be awesome. Sure, there are some corny parts, but I think that makes it fun and magical.
This, in my opinion, is one of the Nostalgia Critic's best reviews! It's nice to see him review a movie he loves for once!
And remember: My Jack!

06.30.2010 - 17:05 | RuinerXXSinCityYour friends are right, and you are "WRONG!" :P Although I guess a lot of liking this film has a lot to do with your age/mindset at the time of seeing it. For example I was under 10, very impressionable, and was still at least a year away from finding Nine Inch Nails, and waking the fuck up!
I mean this as an observation, and not a complaint, but has anyone else noticed that it seems like Doug schedule seems to mimic when these various nostalgic movies are in rotation on cable? I think Bio-Dome sticks out for the most in that sort of coincidence. About a week after coming across it on cable, and remembering how bad it was its' episode popped out on TGWTG.
Doug I realize this movie is pushing 2 1/2 to 3 hours long, and you can't mock it all but you missed a few golden opportunities. Including the terrible elevator music playing during that santa series baseball game(that apparently Santa Christ is involved with. Does that make him a sell-out? FUCK NO!), and that creepy Glen Close cameo with the "boo-box"!
Regardless I am glad this is more of a retrospect then a bash fest, since this film does have good to bad ratio of 2:1.

i imagine that after my intervention you will most likely (because N.i.N fan think Trent is a god (which is a joke)) either laugh or try to defend it with all your might , but you cannot "wake up" from anything that guy spit out of his anarchist/hippy mouth .The very concept they are trying to impose on a already comdamed masse of ignorant fool is too, fake and unachievable.I cannot understand people try to tell the society they have "woke up" by crowning that drug addict to be their spokesman. Can you try to have your own idea instead of blindly and unconditionly listening and accepting idea just because "its cool and my friends think nin is a good band?" if you are of those people who got to vancouver for that pathetic attempt at 'revolution' then ignore this message and continue in to ravel in your own little world. lol

I was just saddened that the Critic didnt include the best joke in the movie...
Rufio: All Grow-ups are Pirates.
Peter: What?
Rufio: We Kill Pirates.
Peter: I am not a Pirate.....As a Matter of Fact, I Am a Lawyer.
Rufio: KILL THE LAWYER!!!!!
Crowd: KILL THE LAWYER!!!!!
Peter: I'm not that Kind of Lawyer.

This is kind of a guilty pleasure for me.
Good review, the jokes weren't as affictive seeing as how it's not that bad, you say so yourself. And the critisms aren't really a big flaw with the film itself, just kind of you having fun. Though It was still enjoyable to watch.
I thought Spider-Man 3 and Indiana Jones and the Kindom of the Crystal Skull were alright good solid popcorn flicks, certainly not the best in their given franchises but I can easily rip those movies apart, they suck but I don't let that overwhelm all the good stuff. Sometimes it's impossible to do that with a film, there's just so much bad with it, you can't help but hate it. Anyway, I think you get the idea lol.

^^As interesting a review as that might be, I feel like it would open the floodgates for a whole slew of Don Bluth cheapquels (like the *shudder* bajillion Land Before Time movies), and even the Disney cheapquels from the 90s. I think it's best just to leave well enough alone (and by "well enough," I mean a big pile of crap).

06.30.2010 - 16:59 | The BelletristHopefully, he'll do a Top 11 of the Worst Disney Sequels.
One that pissed me off is The Lion King 2. If Scar had his own pride, then what was with the hyenas?! EXPLAIN, MOVIE! EXPLAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIN!!!!
-
07.01.2010 - 16:56 | Kymba_ScionIts been awhile since I've seen it, but I always thought that Scar's pride were lionesses that agreed with Scar's ways that were cast out after Scar's death.
-
07.02.2010 - 16:40 | DwaneNooo, that would just be too cruel. Doug's taken enough punishment for the team without piling on all the bad Disney sequels, or worse, the Land Before Time sequels. Can you imagine having to watch them all? It's almost too horrible to think about.

06.29.2010 - 22:54 | brisingrkonungrAnother great review, NC, you never fail to impress. This movie is certainly enjoyable and fairly original, but personally I feel like this was made during Williams' transition from 'comic genius' to 'annoying douche'. Nowadays... well... just look at his career. But I like it anyway.

I actually love this movie, even though it's not perfect at all. I remember watching this film when I was a kid. It still holds up for me. Too bad's at a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. D:
-
06.30.2010 - 06:28 | tedzey
I know! 22% ?! The new Alice and Wonderland film has like a 60% and its a rip-off of the concept of this film!
IDK, this was my favorite film when I was a kid and I still love it! I think the plot holes from "baby peter" running away to him growing up could've been a mistranslation in the transition from script to film. I think the writer was intending that peter run away as a pre-teen and then go to Neverland to never grow up. That would've made more sense!

06.29.2010 - 23:05 | Moreno XDoug, as I recall that you had a gulity pleasure for Judge Dredd, I was hoping you see the same way for Hook which is one of my favorite childhood films. And I'm so happy you understood its own over-the-top, silly fun film. Thank you, thank you, thank you for not bashing this film so hard even some areas you point out are true and leave plot holes. Great review, and I'm glad you recommend the film for others to experience. :)
Great job. :D
I just don't understand why Rotten Tomatos rated Hook 22%, as well as both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel giving two thumbs down.

Holy crap, its Film Brain! It's nice to see him make a cameo in your review, Critic. I like Film Brain, despite the controversy.
I'm going to mention that the actor playing Ruffio (I think that's how it's spelled) is Dante Basco, also known as Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Appropriate to mention since The Last Airbender is coming out this Thursday and there's been a lot of talk.
Wait a minute: Phil Collins, Gwyneth Paltrow, George Lucas and Carrie Fisher (making out) are in this movie? Wow, was the casting director just flipping through channels and just saw them on TV?
I also had fond memories about this movie. While I do agree that some of the plot is corny and weird, I can still watch this with a smile on my face.

Yes I've seen it, and to be fair, they don't make Tink too girly-girl. She's essentially a female, fairy McGuyver. And she's voiced by Katara from Avatar.
-
06.30.2010 - 08:35 | SrceodiznoYa I saw this in the store and it looks like shit (I'm talking about the Tinker Bell movie). It looks as bad as any of those stupid ass Barbie movies.... ....pick one there are several of those fuckers. Unless you say otherwise I'm going to keep myself as far away from that movie as possible.

07.01.2010 - 17:01 | Kymba_ScionTinker Bell isn't a bad movie, I watched when it came on Disney Channel once, its a pretty decent movie. Its definitely for young girls, but as mentioned Tinker Bell isn't really girly, she's a builder fairy and as mentioned sort of a macguyer type in that she builds some amazing stuff out of junk, and is a pretty good and strong role model for girl. Its nothing like those horrid barbie movies other then its target audience.
Great work as always!
