After looking at the first 8 pages of comments I'm rather surprised by the number of people who had a strong connection to this movie. I suppose that is the beauty of poking fun at nostalgic things though. I loved and still love Space Jam but I didn't realize it was a bad movie until you reviewed it. I still love it though. Keep up the good work Doug!

NC, I think you've got this one wrong. It's a bit of a mess but not every comedy is perfect. I enjoyed this movie and I wish you could find moments to indulge in too. It's a guilty pleasure as most would say for those growing up in the 90s.
There is something strangely magical about it all, very mystical and thought-provoking after.
OH and your bit about the madness within madness? I wish you gave this scene some thumbs because it was very engaging. The interaction of other imaginary friends acting together was a stroke of genius. I found this review very weak.

You do realize that the Nostalgia Critic is a character played by a real person, right? A real person who also (from what I understand) at least likes most of the movies he reviews, especially those from when he was younger. The point is that he lets us laugh at the things that we like, and not take ourselves too seriously. I mean, I loved "The Dark Knight," but I don't get offended when I listen to the RiffTrax for it. These are not serious reviews, it is just a comedy sketch based on nostalgic movies from childhood and how they don't measure up to a mature viewer's standards.
And don't try to tell me that this is a mature movie just because it has a potty mouth, IMO that just makes it more immature, especially when it goes for laughs by having a child use profanity. It's still funny, sure, but it isn't mature humor.
-
07.21.2010 - 11:28 | kelter82I think Doug's job here is to make us laugh, not necessarily to be right about everything. OF COURSE he's going to tear it apart! That is far more entertaining than praise. Relax, and who cares if he doesn't like it. You do, and that's all that matters.

05.04.2010 - 22:42 | ESPNfanatic35I found the head squashing scene preeeeeety strange...
Love the annoying meter, I was glad to see Jar-Jar and the racist Transformers being on it. You should have added that little bastard Toad from the Super Mario Bros.

It could have been worse... they could have gotten Robin Williams to play the part of Fred!
& I usually think of Phoebe Cates as the chick from Fast Times at Ridgemont High before I think of her in Gremlins. Maybe it's because of that sleep inducing story about her father playing Santa Claus on Christmas Eve that slowed the film to a halt. Hell, it was so bad that they had to make fun of it in Gremlins 2!

Oh my god, the "durrrrhurrr" face is so hilarious.
I think the only way I'd enjoy this film is if I did look at it as some sort of psychological story. But this is coming from someone who only enjoys reading "Twilight" because she likes attributing psychological problems to all the characters, so I guess that's just the way I deal with crap.

You're not the only one who has done that, moonloon. I did suggest that Bella might have histrionic disorder. Do you agree?
Anyway... This movie does sound terrible. Glad I didn't see it. One thing I don't get... Why is the imaginary friend of a little girl a grown man? Seems a little odd. Don't a lot of kids have animals or people their own age as imaginary friends?
-
05.04.2010 - 22:49 | Mithiana thousand pardons. A new Dr. NC!
that no bit had me in stitches.
-
05.04.2010 - 22:30 | jdh1271To tell you the truth the film, in my opinion had a good premise, the imaginary friend of an adult helps her come to grips with her childhood, but as we can tell it was fucked up. Also Michael Moore is way more annoying than Short Round. Great job NC, to quote Siskel and Ebert, 'Thumbs Up.'

-
05.04.2010 - 22:34 | Gojira1954Whats creepy is that the Omen theme actually fits with those scenes very well.
-
I remember seeing this movie here when I was a young lad.... I actually thought it was funny. Even though seeing a few things here were still a bit funny or "nostalgic" I think now it's just wow. The scene where he is in the clinic where she would be treated for her seeing him was strange as it was when I first saw it as a kid.
Powerful review you hae here Doug. Funny as ever LOL.

WAIT A MINUTE!! WHAT! W-WHAT?! WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!! WAIT!! STOP!! STOP RIGHT THERE!!
are you nuts? you.....you made an annoying meter and you put Edward Cullen in the MIDDLE!!??? ARE YOU HIGH? EDWARD IS ONLY ABOUT A KAGILLION TIMES MORE HORRIBLE THAN THOSE OTHER GUYS!!! Jar Jar Binks? Chris Tucker? PA-LEASE!! No one in pop culture to day deserves to be erased from existence more than Edward fucking Cullen. None of those guys have even a fraction of annoyance compared to Edward Cullen. If he was on an annoying meter, he would be 5 thousand levels past the highest limit. no, no, no that is ridiculous.....putting Ed Cullen in the MIDDLE of an annoying meter....no, there is not a being in existence that is more annoying and idiotic and stupid and........GODAWFUL than Edward Cullen..... I think watching this movie made YOU insane, Doug. putting him in the middle.....my god, that is unacceptable.......no....

Edward Cullen is a non-entity. I can think of far more annoying things than that.

Aww, I kind of liked Orlando Bloom. At least in LotR... in Pirates, he was a bit annoying, yeah. Not Jar Jar annoying, though.
Anyway, I never saw this movie as a kid, but I loved Gremlins and The Young Ones when I was little, so I am ashamed to have even have seen these brief clips of it. Quite dreadful.
-
05.05.2010 - 04:09 | SuperfantastischEdward Cullen is just mildly annoying. All he does is stand around and look hurt and as if he's about to puke any moment. Come to think of it he's not annoying at all, just silly.
Now Bella on the other hand...
-
05.05.2010 - 14:27 | NCscriticthey are both annoying, but you obviously haven't read the books.......but don't. for the sake of your own mental health, don't.
also, he's annoying to me because he is single handedly raping the entire vampire genre, and I like vampires. he's ruining their reputation, if they even have one anymore after that crapfest of a franchise.
-
05.05.2010 - 17:08 | Crystal6I bet if you explained why you hate him... (I don't mean "he's annoying" or "he's stupid" I want actual reasons. Like... "The way he doesn't drink blood is annoying" "or the way he shines in the sun is stupid" ) you argument would be stronger. :pinch:
-
05.05.2010 - 22:17 | NCscriticokay then.
well, actually, first of all, he does drink blood. animal blood, yeah, but thats still blood.
what makes him awful character is the fact that he never, ever, EVER shuts up about how he hates himself, thinks he doesn't deserve happiness, thinks that he is a bad influence on Bella's life, thinks that his existence is nothing more than a curse on humanity.... blah blah blah crap like that. the ironic thing is, his bitching and moaning and complaining is precisely what makes all those claims pretty much true. Neither Edward OR Bella seem to know the definition of the words "self value" or "Self Worth" or "hope"
She's just as bad. she's always "He doesn't love me" and "I'm a horrible person" and "everyone on the planet is a better person than me" and "We have absolutely no chance of happiness"
from the two of them, it's nothing but "I hate myself, I hate my self, I hate myself."
and thats why the book is bad. it's not the "sparkly skin" or any minor detail like that. it's because the personalities of the two main characters are so unintelligent they can't even see their own self worth.

I vomited on hard sunday because I'm sick, so my upper stomach hurts a lot when I laugh. I felt great pain when I first saw that crazy scene reinacted with
the horror soundtrack. Most I've laughed in one of your reviews, and the funnest excrutiating pain has ever been in my experience.
This is truly a great NC episode. The material in question isn't too annoying as to blemish the review, and the review itself is ridiculously funny. I feel it is more so than the usual.

I loved this movie as a kid, when I went back to watch it as an adult-- MAN was that uncomfortable. Not just the unfunny jokes, the fact that everything was going wrong for her, it was so unnerving. But you know, watching this review reminded me why I liked it as a kid. I hated the adult world and the thought that I would one day be a grown up. Some of us kids want nothing more than to tear the adult world apart and watch them all wiggle and squirm in confusion.
