Haha, can't believe I liked this as a kid as well.

n.b. I cant believe the NC parodied a scene from Cop Out.

After looking at the first 8 pages of comments I'm rather surprised by the number of people who had a strong connection to this movie. I suppose that is the beauty of poking fun at nostalgic things though. I loved and still love Space Jam but I didn't realize it was a bad movie until you reviewed it. I still love it though. Keep up the good work Doug!

Same here. Space Jam, Godzilla (1998) and Flubber are some of my most favourite childhood movies and still are.

I wonder if he'll ever review Matilda and/or Jumanji. Probably my most adored movies, particularly Matilda. I can re-watch that movie again and again and still enjoy the hell out of it.

NC, I think you've got this one wrong. It's a bit of a mess but not every comedy is perfect. I enjoyed this movie and I wish you could find moments to indulge in too. It's a guilty pleasure as most would say for those growing up in the 90s.

There is something strangely magical about it all, very mystical and thought-provoking after.

OH and your bit about the madness within madness? I wish you gave this scene some thumbs because it was very engaging. The interaction of other imaginary friends acting together was a stroke of genius. I found this review very weak.

You do realize that the Nostalgia Critic is a character played by a real person, right? A real person who also (from what I understand) at least likes most of the movies he reviews, especially those from when he was younger. The point is that he lets us laugh at the things that we like, and not take ourselves too seriously. I mean, I loved "The Dark Knight," but I don't get offended when I listen to the RiffTrax for it. These are not serious reviews, it is just a comedy sketch based on nostalgic movies from childhood and how they don't measure up to a mature viewer's standards.
And don't try to tell me that this is a mature movie just because it has a potty mouth, IMO that just makes it more immature, especially when it goes for laughs by having a child use profanity. It's still funny, sure, but it isn't mature humor.
  • kelter82
I think Doug's job here is to make us laugh, not necessarily to be right about everything. OF COURSE he's going to tear it apart! That is far more entertaining than praise. Relax, and who cares if he doesn't like it. You do, and that's all that matters.

I found the head squashing scene preeeeeety strange...

Love the annoying meter, I was glad to see Jar-Jar and the racist Transformers being on it. You should have added that little bastard Toad from the Super Mario Bros.
  • TragicGuineaPig

Same here, but for serious, the Transformer Racism Bots should have been higher on the scale.
  • Cy The Python

He also should have added Scratch and Grounder.

You know this is a cult hit among some people for their psychological evaluations on it? People are weird.
They are remaking this with Russel Brand. Hope that movie is better. Great Review!

Remake of Drop Dead Fred? REALLY!?
Just fuck hollywood, they have given up.

When this movie first came out, I honest-to-god thought it was a horror movie. I was 6 years old, and looking at the commercials, all I could think was, "This man with orange hair wants to make a tent out of my skin...must not make eye contact during commercials..."
  • Mikemaniax  - It won't be.
    avatar
A remake of Drop Dead Fred with Russell Brand is guaranteed to be shit for one reason and one reason only... It won't be produced by Judd Apatow
  • DarkSaber

Russell Brand? Wow, the only POSSIBLE way they could make it worse.

I wonder what characters would go past Jar Jar on the annoying meter. I'm guessing the Garbage Pail Kids, Pauly Shore, and Douchy McNickpick.
  • KyaStar
Maybe there was a good reason I didn't know this film existed...
  • rudy023
    avatar
It could have been worse... they could have gotten Robin Williams to play the part of Fred!
& I usually think of Phoebe Cates as the chick from Fast Times at Ridgemont High before I think of her in Gremlins. Maybe it's because of that sleep inducing story about her father playing Santa Claus on Christmas Eve that slowed the film to a halt. Hell, it was so bad that they had to make fun of it in Gremlins 2!
  • kconway1985
    avatar
    Robin Williams IS Fred.
  • moonloon
    avatar
Oh my god, the "durrrrhurrr" face is so hilarious.

I think the only way I'd enjoy this film is if I did look at it as some sort of psychological story. But this is coming from someone who only enjoys reading "Twilight" because she likes attributing psychological problems to all the characters, so I guess that's just the way I deal with crap.
  • Wermin
    OMG It's Fred Fucks !!!
  • Marshmallowcreampie
    avatar
You're not the only one who has done that, moonloon. I did suggest that Bella might have histrionic disorder. Do you agree?

Anyway... This movie does sound terrible. Glad I didn't see it. One thing I don't get... Why is the imaginary friend of a little girl a grown man? Seems a little odd. Don't a lot of kids have animals or people their own age as imaginary friends?
  • Mithian
a thousand pardons. A new Dr. NC!

that no bit had me in stitches.
  • jdh1271
To tell you the truth the film, in my opinion had a good premise, the imaginary friend of an adult helps her come to grips with her childhood, but as we can tell it was fucked up. Also Michael Moore is way more annoying than Short Round. Great job NC, to quote Siskel and Ebert, 'Thumbs Up.'
  • Hiro09
lol thats about right with the music. especially at the end
  • iAFXi
I loved this movie as a kid, haven't seen it in ages but I'm glad you reviewed it. It brought back memories.
  • WillHigh
ah i have fond memories of this movie as a kid and i also remember my parents getting out of the room in a hurry as i watched it now i know why :D

i saw this once on TBS i think, and changed the channel after 1 min.

I remember seeing this movie here when I was a young lad.... I actually thought it was funny. Even though seeing a few things here were still a bit funny or "nostalgic" I think now it's just wow. The scene where he is in the clinic where she would be treated for her seeing him was strange as it was when I first saw it as a kid.

Powerful review you hae here Doug. Funny as ever LOL.

I saw this film around 4 years ago and loved it, still love it, it's without question bad but still eerily enjoyable.

Oh and, Elizabeth turning out to be a complete psychopath due to her environment and Fred being part of it is brilliant, and would have made a much more interesting story.

WAIT A MINUTE!! WHAT! W-WHAT?! WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!! WAIT!! STOP!! STOP RIGHT THERE!!

are you nuts? you.....you made an annoying meter and you put Edward Cullen in the MIDDLE!!??? ARE YOU HIGH? EDWARD IS ONLY ABOUT A KAGILLION TIMES MORE HORRIBLE THAN THOSE OTHER GUYS!!! Jar Jar Binks? Chris Tucker? PA-LEASE!! No one in pop culture to day deserves to be erased from existence more than Edward fucking Cullen. None of those guys have even a fraction of annoyance compared to Edward Cullen. If he was on an annoying meter, he would be 5 thousand levels past the highest limit. no, no, no that is ridiculous.....putting Ed Cullen in the MIDDLE of an annoying meter....no, there is not a being in existence that is more annoying and idiotic and stupid and........GODAWFUL than Edward Cullen..... I think watching this movie made YOU insane, Doug. putting him in the middle.....my god, that is unacceptable.......no....

Edward Cullen is a non-entity. I can think of far more annoying things than that.
  • xkaarinax

Please, Orlando Bloom's acting far outweighs any annoying aspect of pop culture. Even Edward Cullen.
  • Ophiucha
    avatar
Aww, I kind of liked Orlando Bloom. At least in LotR... in Pirates, he was a bit annoying, yeah. Not Jar Jar annoying, though.

Anyway, I never saw this movie as a kid, but I loved Gremlins and The Young Ones when I was little, so I am ashamed to have even have seen these brief clips of it. Quite dreadful.
  • Superfantastisch
Edward Cullen is just mildly annoying. All he does is stand around and look hurt and as if he's about to puke any moment. Come to think of it he's not annoying at all, just silly.
Now Bella on the other hand...
  • zHellas  - I want to ask you something, Superfantastisch
    avatar
    How's that champagne?
  • NCscritic
they are both annoying, but you obviously haven't read the books.......but don't. for the sake of your own mental health, don't.

also, he's annoying to me because he is single handedly raping the entire vampire genre, and I like vampires. he's ruining their reputation, if they even have one anymore after that crapfest of a franchise.
  • Crystal6
I bet if you explained why you hate him... (I don't mean "he's annoying" or "he's stupid" I want actual reasons. Like... "The way he doesn't drink blood is annoying" "or the way he shines in the sun is stupid" ) you argument would be stronger. :pinch:
  • NCscritic
    okay then.

well, actually, first of all, he does drink blood. animal blood, yeah, but thats still blood.

what makes him awful character is the fact that he never, ever, EVER shuts up about how he hates himself, thinks he doesn't deserve happiness, thinks that he is a bad influence on Bella's life, thinks that his existence is nothing more than a curse on humanity.... blah blah blah crap like that. the ironic thing is, his bitching and moaning and complaining is precisely what makes all those claims pretty much true. Neither Edward OR Bella seem to know the definition of the words "self value" or "Self Worth" or "hope"

She's just as bad. she's always "He doesn't love me" and "I'm a horrible person" and "everyone on the planet is a better person than me" and "We have absolutely no chance of happiness"

from the two of them, it's nothing but "I hate myself, I hate my self, I hate myself."

and thats why the book is bad. it's not the "sparkly skin" or any minor detail like that. it's because the personalities of the two main characters are so unintelligent they can't even see their own self worth.
  • Vioven

Their reputation was ruined when Anne Rice started writing about them.

This movie should have been classified as a horror movie over a comedy. Great review and I think that Paulie Shore should have been on your annoying meter above Jar-Jar

I vomited on hard sunday because I'm sick, so my upper stomach hurts a lot when I laugh. I felt great pain when I first saw that crazy scene reinacted with

the horror soundtrack. Most I've laughed in one of your reviews, and the funnest excrutiating pain has ever been in my experience.

This is truly a great NC episode. The material in question isn't too annoying as to blemish the review, and the review itself is ridiculously funny. I feel it is more so than the usual.

I loved this movie as a kid, when I went back to watch it as an adult-- MAN was that uncomfortable. Not just the unfunny jokes, the fact that everything was going wrong for her, it was so unnerving. But you know, watching this review reminded me why I liked it as a kid. I hated the adult world and the thought that I would one day be a grown up. Some of us kids want nothing more than to tear the adult world apart and watch them all wiggle and squirm in confusion.

And to think that Drop Dead Fred is a cult classic in Australia! I don't mean to offend any Aussie fans, but there's something wrong in the water.

By the way, who is the woman who appears with Rob and Bhargo in that one scne? Is she Doug's girlfriend?

Oh and "annoying British humour"? I hope that is reference to a particular strain and not British humour in general!
  • doggans

Most likely not in general, since Doug has stated that he's a fan of Python, Blackadder, Spaced, Hot Fuzz, etc.

Actually he was in A Very Brady Sequel. His name is Tim Matheson. He's mostly a comedic actor and he's also played Chris Farley's brother in Black Sheep.

He's currently playing a psycho killer named Larry on my favorite show Burn Notice.
