01.25.2010 - 17:56 | SoujiSetaI loved the guest apperance by the Mirage Comics Turtles near the end, hell the Comics Leonardo pretty much quoted one of the first lines in the comics word for word. As for why they couldn't bring back the original cast? I believe it had to do with Union issues, the company that does the Voice Work for the the Turtles now is either Union or Non Union (I can't recall) and it just makes things a pain in the ass to deal with.

Yes, Lionsgate has recently become very miserly about protecting their old heroes in a halfshell. Still, this special did an amazing job paying homage to late 80's/early 90's feel of the show, even without the original voice cast. Anyone notice Janine from The Real Ghostbusters cartoon walking by when they first warp back to the old turtles' NYC? Nice touch.
-
Not to nitpick (everyone here does though) but are you talking about Irma who was in the background with brown hair, red glasses and blue top?
She was a semi regular characters from the turtle's old show and April's colleague over at the station. (some people even say she had a thing for Splinter but, ew)

Ah, this brings back the love one had for the Turtles. Even if it was not posted as the Nostalgia Critic, it brings back all the nostalgia... Nice review.

01.25.2010 - 18:05 | AmuroNT1Hey Doug, great review. I'll admit, I was a little worried when I saw this one because I thought you'd tear it apart the way you usually do as the Critic, but I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong. As for the old cast, as has been said, it was a union issue. I'm sure they would have gotten Cam Clarke, James Avery and the others back if they could have.

I found this on TV completely by chance when it first aired. I was (like a million other kids) a HUGE fan of the original TMNT. I'm not as big a fan of the new show but I still like it. I despise that the "fast forward" bull sh*t they did for 2 friggen years in the middle and feel they should have made the "lost episodes" story arch cannon.
With all of that said, I agree with Doug 110%. This movie is awesome pie with win filling and a cherry on top. My only concern is that the series may have jumped the shark.

actually, this is sorta the end of the ninja turtles.
not sure if you knew, but nickelodean acquired all rights to the ninja turtles. not just rights for movies and tv show, but the product as a whole.
so, in a way this special was the end of the mirage-studios ninja turtles era.
if you took time to view and watch this, does that mean we may see an "old verse new" of the '87 ninja turtles and the '03 ones?
volume 1 (season 1) and volume 2 (season 2) are not too expensive to get. and may just give you enough material to work with.
the '03 series, i think by just purchasing the first season (which is split up into 2 DVDs) is good enough for comparison.
oh, and if you wanna compare the rat king, i forget which volume he debuts in in the '87 series, i think its the 3rd one. but the '03 ones, he is in only one episode. titled, I, Monster
not sure if its on one of various '03 volumes. but, i think you can find it on line via youtube or veoh.
then another must-have for an old vs new of the '87 and '03 is the season 4 '03 dvd. though not the entire season 4 as listed, it still features an episode of baxter stockman that would make for a great comparison between the baxter of the '87 series, and this new one. the episode was banned because it was too disturbing. its about him harvesting bodyparts, or what i can remember from it (shredder takes a piece of his body each time he messes up through the '03 'turtles)
and if you REALLY wanna get into this, could pick up season 8 of the '87 turtles (red sky episodes), and then pick up season 6 (fast forward) of the '03 ninja turtles.

You're partially right, from here Ninja Turtles is owned by Nickelodeon 100% and whatever direction they take, it'll never be like the original or newer cartoon ever again, so this is pretty much the final project with any involvement from the original creators, Eastman and Laird. It makes a great way to end 25 years of the Turtles franchise, though I have little hope for Nick's CGI cartoon due in 2012.
I love how the movie canonized all those goofy toy series they did for the old cartoon with all the ridiculous gimmicks and themes, and tied them into the original comic book as the origin universe. But for all the cameos during the dimension viewing scene, even acknowledging the shit Turtles anime, they still didn't mention the live action TV Series, which speaks volumes as to how bad that was.

I don't think they did a good job with the more recent turtles. Made me upset.
I was hoping that you'd talk more about the comic version, but you probably didn't care so much for them so no biggy.
They will be doing more though, 2012 movie new live action rendition, and Nick will be doing a CGI cartoon line.
Nice review, the audio was... a tad off? 4/5 extra kudos because I am a turtle fan girl.

01.25.2010 - 18:37 | ThatChickWithTheFedoraTo be honest, I grew up with the newer Ninja Turtles. I loved it. I really wanna see this special now. The show I grew up with was so damn serious, and yet had it's funny moments. So, to see the old turtles that I haven't seen and the new turtles I love sounds like something I should check out.

01.25.2010 - 18:48 | NostalgiaTraitorThe part I liked the least was how killing the turtles from the comic not only destroies evry univerce with ninja turtles, but destroies there own univerce as well. It's like saying going back in time and killing Adam would cause the earth to explode. Sure it might happen eventualy if theres no one to do something about it, but it's not because one persons death destroies evrything.

Wow, doug, as a Turtles fan myself, i'm shocked you didn't watch the 2003 series at all.....i mean, wow.
You missed a really good series, it's a far cry for the pun's and goofiness of the 1987 show. Some seasons where better than others, but overall i though it better than the old series.
Now i have seen EVERY episode from BOTH series, the 1987 show is still a good watch, but it has aged horribly.
As for why the did not get back the Original VA for the 1987 Turtles in Forever, it was because the show was done before unionization, so if the '87 VA came back, they would likely get kicked out of SAG/VAG for doing work from a Non-union show.
