thats because it IS a carbon copy of pokemon, just like monster rancher, etc. they've been doing this for years.IE; yugioh=duel masters,bakugan/ Twilight=vampire diaries(and other numorous crap ass shows like it)....I HATE it when they copy stuff that was good....or even worse when they copy shit that was shit to begin with(like the last example).....but on a note to pokemon...no one will ever recapture the insane popularity that Pokemon had over the world...nothing, not Twilight(god no..), not digimon, not yugioh and not spongebob.Pokemon was successful in everything it touched, from games to cards to anime to toys to...just everything....and NC, realy, if 7 year old kids can understand perfectly what pokemon is about without much explaination then I'm sure you can...it's not that complicated...but mostly they didn't explain because if you were a kid and didn't know about pokemon in it's prime then it's safe to asume that you were born under a rock, or atleast never touched a gameboy in your life because it's the original games that basically spoon feed you the back story......and FYI, the story takes place in the Kanto region, which is basicaly like pokemon's version of the real Kanto region in Japan.......god this is a horrifucusly(tm) long comment, sorry.....

Actually Yu-Gi-Oh came pretty damn close. The only reason it didn't do as well as Pokemon was that it was geared towards older kids and teenagers who don't really care for toys and whatnot and that, unlike Pokemon, the series ended. Sure they came out with two other series , GX and 5D's but those....kinda suck.

I think digimon, as an anime, was way better than pokemon. ESPECIALLY the third season. The characters are WAY more developed and likable, the concept of friendship over (Practical slavery) was much better. The whole Digi"mon" name might make people think (Oh well this is just another pokemon.) Watch the third season. It's called Digimon Tamers. Trust me it's NOT a carbon copy in that season. In fact the final enemy in that season is a mutant program that was origanaly supose to help by deleting small programs that evolve passed their usefullness and in thinking humankind has evolved passed their usefullness get the idia that all humans need to be deleted. Not only that but the program feeds off the emotions of a depressed girl who not ONLY lost her mother but her best friend and partner Leomon. They even take the form of her to mess with the main character who's in love with the girl! Yeah, tell me if any of this sounds like pokemon...

07.31.2009 - 16:40 | danbren244agreed, the first season was the best in the franchise I loved it, but i just looked back on the second season and realised how bad that was, now THAT didn't do the series justice.

I watched Pokemon: The First Movie a couple of days ago, because of this review. And how incredibly accurate you were (like you always are). You pretty much nailed it, especially that hypocritical ending. I'm thankful I wasn't into Pokemon when I was younger and I actually was in the target demographic at the height of its popularity.

I used to like Pokemon when I was a kid. (I was 10. I didn't know better.) But when I rewatched Pokemon: The First Movie the other day, I realized that all the things were said, every single thing, was right. The kids have no personality at all. It really got boring after a while. Not to mention how confusing it was. I don't remember the show at all. But all in all, I was disappointed that all my childhood memories were wrong. Now, I'm thinking that EVERYTHING I KNOW IS A LIE!!! Were all the shows I watched when I was a kid this bad? I hope not. Anyway, nice video, man. This was the first Nostalgia Critic video I ever saw, and it will always be my favorite. Keep on keepin' on, NC.

08.26.2009 - 01:58 | alt400i once owned pokemon the movie and the movie 2000 on video and the third one on DVD back in 2003 plus i saw nearly every episode on tv, now you tell me that isn't right
-
11.21.2009 - 23:48 | imdgr8stI think that the thing with the Pokemon things was that you had to be a kid to get it, like he said. Once you grow old enough to realize how stupid some things in life are, you start to think "how did I ever get into this?"
-
05.13.2008 - 09:41 | TizocVery, very funny.
And yes it is full of cliches and It's really dumb, but they had to make it just as dumb as the show, they had to respect the (horrible) original idea.
Good job, maistro.

05.14.2008 - 06:10 | KrustoffMy friends found out that I hadn't seen this last year when we were hanging out. So they dragged out a VCR and put it in. I thought I was going to be blown away, but I was just bored throughout the whole thing. I was the only non nerd in the room and picked up on the Minnesota Vikings joke and I left the room. So retarded.

"Well, Animaniacs stills holds up incredibly well as proven by the Naughtiest Moments video. So do Tiny Toons and Darkwing Duck, in my opinion."
Hmmm. I agree. I even have every episode of Darkwing Duck on DVD, and I have Animaniacs Vol. 1, and I'm planning to get Tiny Toons once it comes out. So, yeah.

10.05.2010 - 10:24 | Kryss LaBrynAlso Gargoyles (one of my fave reviews AND series) and ReBoot and Transformers: Beasties (or Beast Wars in the States).
Hey, NC: How about reviewing Beasties or ReBoot? They were both pretty awesome, and pretty groundbreaking with their use of CGI.

Brilliant work on Pokemon, NC. That was some much needed justice to what was actually a horrible film that left my interest in Pokemon in tatters.
However, I have to respond to your comment about Mew. I think that his flippant and childishly playful behavior was actually intended to showcase him as the "Prankster" character, akin to many legends of the past. However, Mewtwo's assault prompted a character transformation, as if to say, "Well, he's cute and isn't as dark and demented as his clone, but can still kick plenty of ass!"
Also...I never realized just how cruel that "bringing your friends back from the dead" concept was. Jesus...
Oh, and one more thing, and I'll shut up: Why is it that Japanese children's shows have to have EVERY character in the shot say something, no matter how pointless it is to the overall dialog? Is it that hard to have just one character stare in complete shock?
-
05.14.2008 - 11:04 | DekkardI can't believe I actually used to watch pokemon as a child ( and enjoyed watching it)
this and other over rated shows like dragon ball z, naruto, etc. really give anime a bad name
"pokemon, sounds like something a Jamaican shouts out when he wants to play cards, eh would you like to play some poke'mon?"
subtitle: apologies to jamaicans everywhere
lmao

PS Tinkerbell coming back to life by people clapping?

05.17.2008 - 02:15 | Bionic-SunI remember seeing this with my father when it first came out (mainly to get those limited trading cards; you'll do almost anything for trading cards as a kid) and he fell asleep during the film. I coudln't see why at the time, but now I get it.

I LOVE this review, I would end up watching this damn show every morning at 6am when I was a teacher. Nothing like killing brain cells before teaching art to little kids!
I showed this to my friend and her two young sons, both Pokemon fans (of course) came running over and they thought it was hysterical, especially where you mock the big fight at the end. Though I don't think they found it funny for the same reasons we did...

I was about 15 when Pokemon came out. I actually did try to make an effort to check it out, but it never maintained my interest. One thing that puzzles me, though... What was the point of resurrecting Ash if the timeline was going to be reset anyway? Wouldn't Ash's death actually been a sort of justification to resetting the timeline if it meant preventing his death? It still would have been lame, but just saying. I preferred Care Bears 2's variation on the Tinkerbell resurrection. Also, love the Lion King bit. "It's just creepy."

That was probably the most alarming opening credits of any movie.
Warner Bros Kids
Nintendo
4Kids
With my current knowledge about these I would have walked out of the theatre instatly... too bad I wasn't that wise when I saw the movie. Oh why! Why did they ever create this? And I who liked the Gameboy game and all.

I used to love Pokemon as a kid and saw that movie the first day it was on in theaters. (I was about 3 at the time and was easily amused) Now I noticed how stupid i was back then. I can't believe i got caught in the hype. Parents and teachers were annoyed by it too! In elementary there we "no pokemon allowed" rules.
This is one of many successful yet stupid anime shows out there. the only one that can be made an exception is dragon ball z. Every guy my age watched that show when they were younger.

As a kid, I used to love this movie, but I have to admit that the plot has always been confusing and I wondered if it's just me - or it really makes no sense?
The second movie was better anyway.
I agree with you; the moral makes no sense at all. And it was lame to kill off Ash only to bring him back a few moments later. It makes it entire pointless.
Thanks for the entertaining review.

At least the video games don't suck.
Nice review, although pointing out how this movie is bad isn't that hard.
