Or, maybe they meant Jem Hadar?
I really like NC--he's a fun guy with a great sense of humor and good talent. I just find it odd that he loves Christmas so much but continually takes Jesus's name in vain in his videos.

12.09.2009 - 15:36 | Dr. FibonacciDo we really have to analyze everything like this? He's just trying to be funny, and make points where appropriate. I am a devout Christian. I don't mean to parade my beliefs about, but I personally don't care what a person believes, so long as they don't hurt anybody. Most people are like that, Christians included. The point I'm trying to make is who gives a shit what kind of Christian or whatever Doug is. Doug is Doug! And lots of people like Christmas, Even some Jews I know celebrate it. If we came here to measure his religiosity, then we need to go home and measure our own sense of humor.

Wrong. The Solstice was celebrated in December between the 20th and 23rd several days before Christmas (Dec 25th). As such the Christians didn't steal anything.

"Wrong. The Solstice was celebrated in December between the 20th and 23rd several days before Christmas (Dec 25th). As such the Christians didn't steal anything."
Wrong. The holiday that Christmas is modeled after was, in fact, celebrated on the Solstice. December 25th is merely the birthday of most saviour gods who represented the Sun who were born of a virgin birth, died for the sins of mankind and then rose again three days later, like Baldur, Horus, Quetzalcoatl, and of course, Mithras. Mithras was the Son, oh excuse me, SUN figure of Mithraism, which the followers of Christ modeled their church after in an attempt to get people to convert to them, because their religion was kinder to women than Mithraism. Which, when you look at how much many Christian churches demonize women, makes you wonder just how much of a jerk you have to be to get them to go along with "Oh yeah, and women are evil because ONE WOMEN did what GOD HIMSELF didn't have the balls to do and taught herself and her boyfriend the difference between good and evil that God needed them to know for his plan to work, but didn't want to just give it to them, so he made them retarded and set them up to fail so that he would have an excuse to make people worship him.
Because THAT makes sense.
-
07.12.2011 - 14:51 | Lucia32Wrong on every single point.
"Baldur, Horus, Quetzalcoatl, and of course, Mithras. Mithras was the Son, oh excuse me, SUN figure of Mithraism"
Neither one of those figures matches up with Jesus.
Neither one was born of a virgin (heck, Mithras sprung from a rock).
Neither one rose in three days.
Baldur died in a game due to his own pride.
Quetzacotl never died.
Horus never died.
Mithra never died.
So none of them "died for the sins of man"
Horus' day was on August 28th.
Baldur's day was on June 21st.
Quetzacotl's day was on April 21st.
Mithra's day was on October 8th
The solstice is celebrated on December 20th to the 23rd.
Christmas is on the 25th.
As you can clearly see, your argument is completely false, Septet.

07.12.2011 - 15:04 | Lucia32"because their religion was kinder to women than Mithraism. Which, when you look at how much many Christian churches demonize women"
Wrong. Christianity and Judaism actively venerate holy women and even a cursory look over the NT shows that women are frequently chosen over men as being the witnesses to and messangers for God's plan and representatives for his church on Earth. In fact, as far back as the OT, God would lift up righteous women as being not only the equals of, but also GREATER than even the greatest of political/religious leaders.
I'd tell you to read and study the Scriptures, but it sounds like you need a guide.

Ugh. Stop yourself. The entire point of the Genesis story was a discussion of the nature of choice and free will in sin. If humanity didn't know the difference between good and evil before eating the fruit, why did Eve question if it was right to disobey God (aka commit evil in the sight of her creator)? Both she and her husband knew it was wrong and they did it anyway. All the fruit did was make them ashamed (which from the translation, it is obvious that this is a literary device to indicate that they realized the totality of what they had done). The fruit represented the simplicity of following God's Commandments and the ease of which they can be broken. The Genesis story is a parable to demonstrate the lesson that humans always had the ability to choose their fate, to think and to judge. As such, we are responsible for our own wrongs. As such your entire screed suggesting that the parable was misogynistic is completely off the rails (for the reasons I listed both in the post above and here) and your claim that humanity "was set up to fail" is also wrong (as I've demonstrated).
As before allow me to suggest a book that will make this clear to you.
"The Written and Oral Torah: A Comprehensive Introduction" by Cardozo is an excellent starter

05.20.2012 - 17:42 | Karri"Next time, please do your research before you run your mouth."
That's a great point. Everyone should do that.
"The solstice is celebrated on December 20th to the 23rd.
Christmas is on the 25th."
So true. Oh wait, it's also on Dec 24th or Jan 6/7/19, depending on country. For that matter, prior to the fourth century, people had all kinds of dates for it, about half of the proposed dates being during summer.
Really, none of your points are as well researched as you appear to think.
-
06.25.2012 - 08:03 | Lucia32"So true. Oh wait, it's also on Dec 24th or Jan 6/7/19, depending on country. For that matter, prior to the fourth century, people had all kinds of dates for it, about half of the proposed dates being during summer."
1. None of which fall on the Winter Solstice.
2. Even various other dates for the Feast of the Nativity did not/ do not fall on the Winter Solstice many centuries ago or now.
So my point stands. I used the Dec 25th date just for the sake of simplicity (and because it is the most commonly accepted date). But as your own example points out, my same argument stands on the other dates as well.
So you just proved my point. Not exactly sure what you were going for....
"Really, none of your points are as well researched as you appear to think."
See those sources I put up there (in my previous posts)? The scholarly consensus agrees with me, sweetness. I've done my research. How about you? =)

"Jesus was also most likely born in summer, if you are going by the position of the star the wisemen supposedly followed. Christmas is just a holiday the Christians stole from the pagans. It originally celebrated the solstice."
*sigh*
Traditionally, in Jewish culture, it was believed that a person dies on the day he was conceived, so, adding 9 months to Good Friday, you end up at sometime in December. The solstice was commonly celebrated at that time, so the Christians estimated Christmas as December 25th as both a traditional estimation and a way to obscure paganism, thus killing two birds with one stone.
And the star was supposedly moving, and was probably not part of the normal night sky. So it's more likely that Christmas was anytime BUT the summer; otherwise the wise men wouldn'tve thought anything was unusual.

.....Sorry couldn't help myself there.
Seriously can't we keep religious debate out of our NC videos? While I do think Doug tries to steer away from crudely insulting all religions in general, I doubt he is intentionally trying to come off as hypocritical to the beliefs of Christians when it comes to Christmas. This is a comedy character so over analyzing things like "using the lord's name is vain" is a bit ridiculous.
I almost hate to say this myself since it is usually spat out on every first comment for every single NC review but this is certainly one of the best Holiday themed reviews from Doug I have seen. I think this is some perfect material for him, and while admittedly you could see it coming from a mile away I can't wait to see the Star Wars Christmas special episode next week. That thing is so unintentionally horrid even Danny Tanner(NOT BOB SAGET! lol)could make a hilarious review of it.

You may be familiar with the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). Basically, a bunch of people wanted to reach up to god by building a tower that got to Heaven. Hence the idea that god lives in the sky with the clouds up in Heaven. This is confirmed by his worrying that they will reach him, which is why he made them all speak different languages so that they couldn't communicate to finish the tower to reach Heaven.
-
12.18.2010 - 00:21 | Lucia32"You may be familiar with the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). "
Wrongo.
No text in the either the OT or NT states that God "lives in the clouds". In fact, both Judaism and Christianity hold that God exists beyond the reach of man in a separate plane of existence.
Furthermore, the problem of the tower of Babel wasn't that he was "worried about them reaching him", it was the fact that humanity had the hubris to believe that they could somehow reach heaven by mortal means and abandon the Earth. The story of Babel was a warning against hubris and especially the kind of hubris that tries to "cheat" one's way past the the gates of heaven (reliance on materialistic means to achieve a spiritual end). You'd know that if you actually read the text.

-
12.11.2009 - 00:27 | Sagathprobably because he doesn't care. Christmas is not synonymous with being a christian in modern day america. Its more of a seasonal holiday than anything else, and that, is why I like christmas.
If I had to sit through another boring speech about God and/or jesus in my life it would be too soon.
AND now that I am done being an ass:
Great video NC! I'm going to make a wild (not so wild) guess that there is going to be a starwars christmas special review.

If I have to sit through another stream of comments full of raging fundy atheists making stupid, witless insults against religion in general (just because one guy goes bananas) and proving that they don't know jack shit about other people's religious beliefs, it'll be too soon for me.
(Yes, I'm talking to you 7th Pwnist and Fleaman)
I'm an Agnostic and even I'm sick of hearing this kind of crap.
-
its people like you (bgbez) who make Christians look like total losers.. if you don't like him saying jesus in the videos dont watch em, thats it.. nobody is forcing you at ALL.. and nobody said he was christian. you can LOVE Christmas and not be a christian at ALL.. besides Christmas really isnt even a Christian Holiday to begin with.. you should do some research. it started off in.. well hell why am i typing all this out use google and find out for yourself, or watch that one episode of the Boondocks where they make mention of it too. either way keep this in mind Christians LOVED to take Pagan holidays and turn them into Christian ones. (Easter, Christmas, and now even HALLOWEEN!) that is all.
-
12.17.2009 - 00:58 | bgbez@Fleaman -- Where do I begin?
You wrote, "if you don't like him saying jesus in the videos dont watch em"
So, someone who disagrees with your view is shown the door?
You wrote, "besides Christmas really isnt even a Christian Holiday to begin with"
As M.Bison would say, "Of course." Seriously. That wasn't the point. The point is that he shows reverence in some videos for the holiday and for its associations (regardless of its origin) but takes the Lord's name in vain. That's a contradiction in practice.
God bless you, Fleaman. Take care and have a happy new year!
-
12.18.2010 - 00:19 | Lucia32"besides Christmas really isnt even a Christian Holiday to begin with.."
Except that it totally is.
"you should do some research."
Given your comment, I think that speaks more of you.
"either way keep this in mind Christians LOVED to take Pagan holidays and turn them into Christian ones. (Easter, Christmas, and now even HALLOWEEN!) that is all."
Easter? Never even a remembered day before the Christians came, let alone a pagan holiday.
Christmas? Not even close. There weren't even any holidays on the 25th in the western world when Christmas was made into a holiday. Furthermore, any anthropologist will tell you that the core Christmas traditions were/are unique in the history of holidays. As such there was nothing stolen there either.
Halloween? Christians didn't even touch Halloween (It's a purely secular holiday unless you are a druid)! The only holiday we have is the day AFTER (November 1st is All Souls day).
All three of your examples are false. We didn't steal anything.
I suggest you do a little reading of your own before you run your gums.
-
05.30.2011 - 23:41 | TheSeptet
Well lets see here,
Easter - Formerly known as Ostara, when people used painted eggs as sacred offerings to the goddess Ostara, who was the goddess of fertility, hence the rabbits.
December 25th - Birthday of Krishna, Mithras, Horus, Buddha, Beddou, Quetzalcoatl, Hercules, Attis, Tammuz, Baldur, and of course that fellow from Nazareth showed up eventually. As for the unique traditions, yeah, none of of those guys above were born of a virgin, had a king try to kill them when they were children, crucified for the sins of mankind, or rose from the dead three days later. Well, except for ALL OF THEM.
Halloween/All Souls Day - Samhain (pronounced S-ow-in) was a celebration of those who came before, much like the Mexican "Dia De Los Muertos" or Day of the Dead. It started at midnight October 31st and continued all day November 1st *cough*soundfamiliar*coug h* and the people left an open space on the table for visitor who might stop by, a candle in the window to guide lost souls home, and dressed up in costume and paraded down the streets.
Nope, nothing stolen here. Those holidays are as original as the plot of Avatar.
-
07.12.2011 - 16:11 | Lucia32You just don't learn do you?
"Easter - Formerly known as Ostara..."
Wrong. No such festival was celebrated and no such goddess was worshiped.
http:// www.guardian.co.uk/ commentisfree/belief/ 2011/apr/23/easter-pagan- roots
"December 25th..."
See my response to you when you tried this same gambit before. Needless to say NONE of them were crucified, none of them had their day on the 25th of December, none of them were born of a virgin, none of them rose from the dead three days later...you get the point.
Same sources as my previous response. Plus I suggest you read "Buddha" by Jon Ortner (so that you don't insult the beliefs of Buddhists again) and Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" (so that you don't make a mockery of Greco-Roman Paganism again).
-
07.12.2011 - 16:28 | Lucia32"Halloween"
The Anglo-Saxon Samhain was a secular festival. It only became religious to the neo-pagans in 1900s. Furthermore, the Christian All Souls Day was celebrated in the 7th century on November 1st and Samhain was first celebrated in the 10th century. So Samhain was just a secular alternative to the pre-existing Christian Nov 1 festivities of All Souls Day. The Mexican Day of the Dead is simply the Catholic All Souls Day (but in spanish, obviously). Even after all these years, there is still a line between the secular Halloween (on the 31st of Oct) and the Christian All Souls Day (on the first of November). So there too, you're wrong.
Don't believe me? Read Hutton's "Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain" .
So no. Nothing was stolen and you have been proven wrong...again.

-
12.18.2010 - 00:06 | Lucia32"christmas is bullshit like religion!"
No. Christmas is a holiday which can inspire the best of us, as long as we understand it's true meaning: not presents or consumerist nonsense, but union with those we love, hope for our future and (in the case of my faith, and I am a Christian) the growth of one's soul and the quest to better serve one's brothers and sisters.
So no. Christmas is not bullshit. Religion is not bullshit.
Your comment however, danvai? Now that was bullshit.
