09.17.2009 - 20:36 | jdh1271Wow, Doug I gotta say you got a great taste of movies. I love how u noted Duvall's performance in To Kill a Mockingbird, I love his performance in that film too.

10 - Knew this was gonna be on here, it's a classic!
9 - Again, not a fan of the movie (too WEIRD for me), but I can see why it has a devoted fanbase.
8 - I'M BATMAN!!!
7 - Had to do a report on Edward R. Murrow, but I never saw this movie. Weird. I hear it's really good, though!
6 - What a great film Lost in Translation was. I especially love the directing in this movie; it's so beautiful to watch!
5 - Another Kubrick film, and it's cool to see you take a stand on his most polarizing film ever.
4 - One of Burton's greatest, and also the best Batman film ever, and that'll never change.
3 - Another classic on the list... I see you're a fan!
2 - Amadeus is a cult favorite to be sure... interesting choice, but a good choice!
1 - Wow, was NOT expecting a Gilliam film at the top... but who am I to talk? Great list regardless.

Am I the only one who didn't get Lost in Translation? I personally didn't understand it and found it torturously slow paced. It seemed that all that was going on was Bill Murray flirting with a much younger Scarlet Johansen in Japan for two hours straight. Then again, I happen to like more action movies like Star Wars, James Cameron's Aliens and Terminator movies, the Dark Knight, and Die Hard. That said, I can still appreciate more dramatic movies; for instance I really enjoyed the King's Speech. Also, I was thirteen when I saw Lost in Translation and I'm 20 now, so it was a long time ago when I saw it. Maybe I need to see it again to really understand it.
I think I may need to see all the movies on Doug's list. It may bring me to a better understanding of cinema.

09.17.2009 - 20:59 | technicolorfantasiesGreat choices , all these are on my favorites or are movies i want to see. Great description on why they are on the list. :cheer:
Your top three have changed the way i look at movies

09.17.2009 - 21:09 | LUrabbi
I just finished watching and I have to say that this is a great, great list. I haven't seen all 20, but I found myself agreeing with you throughout. I like to follow directors, and any list that includes Welles, Burton, Kubrick, and Gilliam has to be good. Thanks for sharing man.
And you included To Kill a Mockingbird? Heck yes!

09.17.2009 - 21:11 | Herr WozzeckI'm surprised you didn't mention the numerous performance practice inaccuracies throughout Amadeus, actually, as it's also highly inaccurate on that level. (Most glaringly; what the fuck is the celesta doing in this movie when it wasn't invented until the late 19th Century?) But then again, period performance practices didn't have as strong a following when it came out, so I'm willing to grant it at least that. It's still a great movie, and it makes me wonder why F. Murray Abraham did not have a career after this movie.
Other than that, nice countdown!
-
09.19.2009 - 09:55 | powermad9Hah, I'm not.
It may have been a breakthrough in the film industry, but if Doug went by breakthroughs, Wizard of Oz would be in there.
-
I'm a little suprised that MST3K the Movie wasn't on here lol. But all around a good list. Lost in Translation, The Dark Knight, Batman, Fear and Loathing and To Kill a mocking bird are all on my favorites list too
-
09.17.2009 - 21:26 | hildegain1. aliens
2. amadeus
3. terminator
4. terminator 2
5. batman
6. war of the worlds (original)
7. enemy mine
8. enemy at the gates
9. harry potter: prisoner of azkaban
10. wolf (with jack nicholson)
good to hear the nostalgia critics favourites and just by coming up with 10 like that i can appreciate how hard it is to come up with 20.
I don't agree with his taste on favourites but i do agree with what he's said about art and feel in movies.
I can't wait for the next review :)
-
11.30.2009 - 15:45 | Theotherevildeadguy10. Aliens
9. Terminator 2
8. Brazil
7. IJ: Raiders of the lost ark
6. King Kong (original)
5. Amadeus
4. The Crow (avoid the sequels :X )
3. Ed Wood
2. A Clockwork Orange
1. Batman (1989)
I know this is kind of a strange list but I'm kinda picky about what films I like.
By the way, show of hands, who votes for an Ebert style most hated list for the Nostalgia Critic?
-
04.16.2010 - 12:34 | RobMetalCheese@hildegain
Ummm...Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban? Um wow, I guess you can't question people's tastes, but anybody who puts a movie like that on their TOP 10 is gonna get a raise of an eyebrow from me.
-
09.17.2009 - 21:26 | ryuk_shinigamiWow, my favorites are eerily close to yours. My respect for you as a critic has gone from (on a scale of 10) from about a 5 to an 8.

Dear TGWTG,
Thank you for mentioning the music, however briefly, in the Batman portion of your film countdown. Danny Elfman is a musical genius in my opinion, and to hear him praised for his work always makes me happy. Again, thank you.
Saturn Signing Out
-
09.19.2009 - 09:53 | powermad9Yes, Elfman is just amazing. It was kind of unfair of Seth McFarlane to make fun of him.
I'd actually like to see Danny Elfman vs. John Williams.

I loved To Kill A Mockingbird so much, nearly as much as I loved the book, and I found Lost in Translation really interesting. I disagree with Eyes Wide Shut or Amadeus, but I do agree with both Batmans.
It's a pity there's no Princess Bride or Sunset Boulevard. They're both great, but hey, it's all subjective. :)
Great lists.

Well, I have my DVD Christmas wish list all made out. Thanks NC!!
I've never heard of Titus before, but I got to see that one, Brazil also. I really liked Spirted Away a lot, that a Princess Monoke were great films. A great list all around, this was healthy and pleasant to watch...lol, thanks again!
By the way, if anyone has read and "enjoyed" 1984, the Richard Burton-John Hurt film, out on DVD, is a great movie adaptation of the book; and does a fine job of illustrating the concepts and themes of novel. I would recomend reading before watching though or the movie will just confuse.

10. I have not seen Citizen Kane, but I've got it on a list of movies to see.
9. I understand putting this on here. Loved this movie.
8. All right, I guess. I like TDK, too, but I don't know if I'd put it on my top ten.
7. Haven't seen this one.
6. Haven't seen this either, but's another of those movies I've been meaning to see.
5. Hrm... eh, no. I didn't like this one.
4. Lol, all right, I get it. You know, I liked this movie more than TDK. But so far up the list? Maybe not so much for me.
3. YES. So true. I loved this movie so much. Atticus (Peck) is so great. I think I even like it better than the book.
2. Haven't seen it!
1. Hmmm. I don't think I've even heard of this. But it's going on the list!

Wow Doug that list was just Phenomenal. Every movie on there is Great and all time classics. I would however swap out 1 movie for a different one. As great as The Dark Knight is, and it is a outstanding movie. I would replace it with 12 angry men(1957 version). I can't come up with the words for how amazing this movie is, and all the actors performances. Again i love The Dark Knight, but this movie would take it hands down.

These are a lot of interesting choices. I suppose many of them come from your film background, and many do follow the same stylistic patterns, perhaps reflecting a side of your personality that we, as viewers, are unaware of.
There were a couple of titles that I recognized, but have never seen. But from this glowing review I shall now have to check them out.
I wonder if something else shall come along and blow you away in the future? And what would it take to top three perfect films?

Wow, I see you like the classic movies TGWTG. I am actually surprised that Schindler's List did not make that list. But that is your opinion and I do not blame you, if you haven't seen it, watch that movie, it is really good.
-
09.17.2009 - 21:47 | AdamTheGreat91
Hey man, im a huge kubrick fan, but eyes wide shut was soooo boring. I cannot believe you like that film more than Clockwork Orange. This is a pretty good list, I myself have a very different list, like the only movies that would be on my list that were on your list would be Clockwork orange and Citizen Kane and Titus. but i'm not as into the 18th century funny wig and costume movies as you are. Though i do enjoy the history of Tom Jones, a foundling. Vegas is just just hard to watch as you said. Good night and good luck was a fantastic movie, and i always forget about it.
but the one movie I just did not like on this list was Lost in Translation. The best Bill Murray film is and always will be Rushmore (which is most certainly on my list) LOT was just terrible.
