While not as funny as the previous two Demo Reels, it's actually really creative story wise. The whole bits with the SWAG harassing the characters was very creative and compelling. I was confused about the parts with Donnie at first, but when I realized that Donnie was in an exotic environment having drawn out and boring conversations with people he's met, I realized that WAS the Lost and Translation parody. It took me a while to get it but when I did, I was laughing.
  • GrenMonk2
"not as funny as the previous two Demo Reels"

So basically it's not funny at all?
  • GrenMonk2
But in all seriousness, the plot itself is better than the comedy. Although this episode seems more like a better episode-before-the- season-finale than a 3rd episode. Like the whole "has this been a whole waste of time" moment at the beginning, the deconstruction of Donnie's motives and actions, Uncle Yo as an "anime spirit guide" the Nostalgia Critic Cosplay cameo, and S.W.A.G. finally making a huge move the group (also the fact that Rebecca knows them by name implies they've attacked before, and it's never established that Demo Reel actually knows about S.W.A.G. or their intentions. ALSO, has it ever been made clear what actual threat Demo Reel poses to S.W.A.G.? This conflict is so confusing...) But MY GOD THE JOKES ARE BAD...except for the parts with Egoraptor. And the open endings joke at the end. And the James Bond joke was kind of funny too.

So there is some improvement there, but in small bursts.

Also also also, has ANYONE heard of Blue Badges, the movie Donnie brought up?

And in case anyone checked the credits, Donnie's wife is MARA WILSON.
  • Chicago_INC  - Funny thought...
If Demo Reel takes place in the same universe as the rest of the ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com characters, then all you mention is part of what Dr. Insano said. The Universe is now a Universe where nothing makes sense. The Nostalgia Critic is the Plot Hole and now there's a Plot Hole in a lot more things on the website.

Nothing in the ThatGuyWithTheGlasses universe makes sense anymore and in To Boldly Flee, [SPOILER ALERT. As if you haven't seen the movie already], they made the Plot Hole so huge that it's engulfed everything.

Don't worry, there will be more plot holes to come in Demo Reel. Just ride the tide. I'm sure like Nostalgia Chick, Linkara, and Cinema Snob's characters may cameo on Demo Reel trying to tell them how terrible their film remakes are.
  • GrenMonk2
There were plot holes in the rest of the shows before To Boldly Flee. The reason they're okay is because they're for comedic reasons. Demo Reel's it's own story, not a story attached to review show. So, it should be responsible for it's own plot, not relying on the rules, or lack thereof, of all of the other shows.

Besides, I said it was getting better, just that there's still some flaws in it.
  • jonyjon98  - OBJECTION!
Donnie DuPre made a cameo at the end of Chester A Bum's Elf review.

    Your argument is invalid.
  • GrenMonk2
Right, because I definitely knew that 2 weeks ago.

Somethings need time to grow and seeing they have been doing this for what, less then a month? And till working on this style over review don't judge to quickly.
  • GrenMonk2
I don't really see why I shouldn't give an opinion on it. Doug's shown he's capable of balancing writing and comedy, and besides that, he's a grown man. He can handle one random guy on the internet's criticism.

    "Whaddya want, a cookie?"

Silly little girl, you don't get cookies unless you put decorations up for Prince Adam's party.

    lol, everyone knows that

Also, seeing this really makes want to check out the actual movie myself. I have heard so man people talk about it, its about time I finally get around to renting this movie.

This is going out really great in my opinion! Maybe because I was there and I'm already nostalgia-ing over something that happened a little while ago, but just the way you guys filmed how weird it is, and the Lost in Translation parodies made me feel right back like I was there. :)

I'm probably going to freak out later on when I see myself as a dork in a Spider-Man hoodie.
  • ArthurCrane  - ARIN HANSON!?!?!?
    avatar
    How about that shit?
  • ninjadude853  - Not a plot hole
I'm only a minute in, and I need to point out that in the part in the movie where they were shooting at the Bond girl, they were using FLINTLOCK PISTOLS. It is not stupid that he didn't kill all of them, because flintlocks can only fire one shot before needing to reload.

Also, he has not been switched more than the Doctor.

Well, there was my daily killjoy moment. See ya!
  • GrenMonk2
And remember the Batman one where it said that Bruce left all the other prisoners to die? He actually dropped the rope for them when he left in the movie.
  • armagod679
I like how the plot is progressing and how you did address all the flack this show's been getting... though I think it's great.

By the way, you don't have to encourage us to write slash fan fiction.

Even better than the last episode. You're finding a good balance between character development and humor, the series is really starting to grow on me.
  • Rutana
I would really appreciate it, if you name the movies you're spoilering in the demo reel...
Not everyone sees a movie right in the cinema. And when the video is titled Lost in Translation, I don't really expect a Skyfall Scene in the beginning that sounds suspiciously like a spoiler for the movie... :/
Guess this Demo Reel has to wait, again, till I see the appropiate movie (after I couldn't watch the last one, as well, since Wreck-It-Ralph isn't even out in every country by now...)

Sorry, if this sounds like whining, but it's frustrating. I like the premise of the show, and it's annoying not beeing able to see the episodes, because you still want to experience new movies unspoiled...
  • Cassmi

First off Karl is my favorite character.

I do like that you are addressing the flaws in Demo Reel and are trying to improve.

The show appears to be getting better, The first couple episodes were not great but entertaining enough that I would want to keep watching. and I still have that feeling after viewing this episode.
  • ladydiskette
    avatar
    Karl is a freaking pimp!

TWO Slave Princess Leias and a sexy Pikachu at the same time?

    Dayum....
  • Cassmi
    avatar
I failed to see the funny in this "slave Leia orgy" part of the show. The same problem is evident in The Big Bang Theory, i.e. just because you mention something geeky doesn't make it funny. It's like the writers of BBT are aiming the show at jocks who laugh at the show "becuz of dem goofeh nurds". I find that Demo Reel's jokes occasionally suffer from the same problem. For me, humour doesn't consist of name-dropping stuff that a certain demographic (e.g. geeks in this case) would know.

Ps. What's with people seeing slave Leia as something really sexual? I was way too young to be thinking that when I saw RotJ. :O For me, Leia had very maternal features and was just an asexual heroine that kicked ass.
  • thatchickwithlonghair
    avatar
You're wrong. There are so many jokes in The Big Bang Theory that ONLY nerds would get!

It sure as hell wasn't made for jocks.

As for the "Leia is sexy" thing, I agree with you but from what I understand, she got a lot of male fans when she was in that gold bikini...thing.
  • Podorojnik
Good effort I guess, but I have to agree, that at this point there is no way I am going to come back to this show. Also if you are trying to go for this type of show a good idea would be at least getting better camera so it would be at least tv-level production.
  • brainofbrian
I just finished part 1. Quite an interesting episode. Kudos on pointing out your own shows criticisms. That was like South Park or something, just real clever. Also, Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies (Thanks to Doug's Top 20 List) so I'm loving some of the parody here. Also HOLY SHIT MARA WILSON WAS THE WIFE! THAT"S SO COOL! SHE JUST KEEPS FUCKING MY MIND WITH AWESOME CAMEOS!
  • Cassmi
    avatar
Yeah it was an interesting side-note that Wilson did the wife cameo but why is it caps worthy "OMGURZ IT'S SOOOO FUKKEN MIND-BLOWING!!!"?
  • Gozin  - Meeeeeeeehhhhh.
I keep trying to enjoy this with all my heart, and give it a really open mindset. Frankly I wasen't the biggest NC fanboy, and I do agree that the series got particularly stale towards the end of it's run. But I honestly feel that they should just scrap this whole demo reel idea. I'd honestly like to see Doug put effort into something better then this.. whatever you want to even call this. If a huge majority of your fans are already bored with the premise three episodes in that never bolds really well for you.

It honestly reminds me of what happened to Pure Pwnage a few years back. After T-bag died in real life and the Internet show was put on a hiatius, they moved onto the TV show with a new script, new cast (Besides jeremy), and a new premise. It was a complete train wreck that was a hollow shell of it's former self from the very beginning. Dry comedy, bad parodying, and the gaming community driven spirit was completely sucked from it.

Please don't try and force this down our throats by producing more and expecting it to catch on, because it really isn't. And yes I expect people to rage and be like, "Give it a few episodes, they are obviously trying" yata yata. If someone like me can't enjoy this, I don't see how anyone else can.
  • ladydiskette
    avatar
LMAO! Awwwww Karl how could you say no to the cutsey-wutsey teddy bear? XD

My favorite part in this episode.

Gozin "Please don't try and force this down our throats by producing more and expecting it to catch on, because it really isn't."

Can You tell me who designated you as the official representative of the Demo Reel audience? Or you just talk in plural while stating your own opinions?

Gozin "If someone like me can't enjoy this, I don't see how anyone else can."

Make a t-shirt and wear it proudly.
  • timmyjingoro  - dumbass
    @pinkman

That last sentence of yours was perhaps THE dumbest thing I've ever seen typed on the internet. You should feel shame at being so self-absorbed....it's a level of arrogance I didn't know existed.
Who are you to claim to speak for the majority of the audience?
  • Cassmi
    avatar
Wow, I don't particularly enjoy Demo Reel but I don't presume that everyone else shares my opinion. If anything, I'd be glad if most of the viewers liked it because I genuinely wish Doug and co. all the best and hope they find new success.

Your comment, however, was a whole new kind of dumb.
  • RagingJenni  - DIfferent and enjoyable
I liked the two earlier episodes too. The first one was a bit too long, the second one had a bit too boring parodies (though they tied in to the story well) and this one I thought the Donnie parts was a bit too long (probably because I didn't get the lost in translation parody parts)

Overall, I'm liking the series though. Well paced humour and not just one joke after another, and good story development.^^
  • itstheblueguy
    avatar
Now THIS is more like it. I was able to get through the last episode okay (some of it was good), but this was more on the level that kept me coming back for the Nostalgia Critic. It was edgier, more innovative, and it showed an intelligent thought process behind it. Granted, there were points where the problems Demo Reel has had with cohesive storytelling threatened to reemerge, and the second half wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny, but a few more episodes like this, and this show will be fine.

Side note: Good choice to go to go to work on Donnie's character. He's off to a late start, but now he's definitely on the right path.
  • brainofbrian
O.k. finished part 2. Well overall...yeah this was an awesome episode. Extremely subtle humor that, while i think the goofball stuff from the Thanksgiving episode was more cohesive in tone, was a nice change of pace. Again, I just fucking loved the Lost in Translation parody. Ironic since alot of the parody in this show has been panned, but in this episode it worked really well because it was brought about naturally rather than be scripted into the remake bits. I also really liked how this kind of dealt with Donnie Dupre's past, and his relationship to cinema, and how it was done with the very organic relationship between him and Uncle Yo (Fantastic job in those scenes you guys.) The only big downside...cliffhanger. What a bummer. Oh and uh...MARA WILSON WAS THE WIFE! I KNOW I ALREADY SAID THAT IN MY COMMENT ON PART 1, BUT I CAN'T GET OVER IT! THAT'S TOO COOL MAN! (sigh)... I want her around all the time man. Just a little cameo every once in a while as Donnie's wife or something. That'd be nice.
  • Bloodrealm
So is this episode one enormous in-joke where someone who hasn't seen Lost in Translation has no hope of even finding where the joke is, let alone get it? This episode was just depressing to me. I liked parts of it, and I can tell this whole thing was really well done, but I think that's part of the problem. This didn't feel like a parody of anything, this felt like Doug having a sincere breakdown. I really, really hate to say this, since I've had high hopes for the show the whole time, but I don't know if I can handle watching Demo Reel much longer if this overwhelming sadness becomes a trend.
  • Cassmi
    avatar
So in order to understand a parody about a movie you would actually be required to have seen said movie? TEH AUDACITY!
  • Lynnberrie
    avatar
This was definitely my favorite episode of Demo Reel. I like how this one was more focused on the characters and it felt very real at the parts with Donnie experiencing the Con. If the show keeps continuing like this it will be very good indeed.

    Another great episode!

    SPOILERS AHEAD.

Lost in translation spoof was pure pleasure to watch - great story and direction. I can only imagine how crazy it was to shoot so many scenes during a convention - where logisitics and time is highly limited. I liked how it felt it's a constantly changing environment but at the same time that the story was nicely established in few familiar locations - the rooms, the bar, the karaoke stand up etc. It was easy to follow the story this way.

I guess for the most part the dialogues, and some of the scenes were improvised but it worked out great. Doug, Uncle Yo, Egoraptor - they're all natural and interesting characters. Scene where Donnie is talking with Uncle Yo about his mother was really intriguing, same with Donnie's talk to his wife etc. Don't get me wrong, the SWAG plot builds up nicely and is intriguing too but thet's to be expected. It's these little unexpected pieces of information that pop out and make me wonder what more of the story there is for each character. This is what makes the Demo Reel (series as a whole) fun experience.

Carl having a room party was another fun scene. Nitpick: maybe except "girls, give me your best laugh" sound bit. I was expecting the ending joke, but it actually worked nicely and subtly :) Quinn, right after Carl, is gradually becoming a colorful and fun character to watch.

The "somewhere in the office" and "somewhere on the street" sets felt a little claustrophobic and undefined again but that might be the contrast to the convention storyline.

    For the technical part:
    - It was sometimes hard to hear the dialogue especially when Donnie was walking around with Uncle Yo. Nothing a boom or wireless mic wouldn't fix.
    - In the convention - constanly changing whitebalance was bothering me a little. I understand lighting in these type of places is a mess but still.

Overall, Demo Reel is getting better every episode.
It was fun watching, I am looking forward to next one.
    Big thanks for that.

P.S. I left this for last because I am really nitpicking now but - the last line "Hi". well, I feel that scene was funny enough without it ;)

I am eager to see what will happen next. Like who Donnie's mother really was, and what happened or will happen to the others, and not to mention I wonder if maybe there is a connection between Donnie's mother and this SWAG perhaps, or better still, something did happen to Donnie's mother as a actress to make her say those thngs about Hollywood-Man, the characterization and backstory is coming along so well, greatly improved..

I can't wait to find out!
