Just FYI, those things that happen in the movie and "were not in the book" are actually in the "Appendices" book, that intercalates the events that happen in the Hobbit (among other stories) while were are not seeing a character, like that scene called 'The White Council', that was Gandafl talking with Elrod, Galadriel and Saruman.

Okay so I have a theory.
Doug, after reading the fourms for the last few weeks finally had a psychotic episode. He sat weeping for days. No one could console him. Then a tiny spider floated down and asked him...
Spider: "what's wrong champ?"
Doug: "no one likes my show!!" *continues to sob in hands*
Spider: The spider offered helpfully, "well maybe you should listen to what people are telling you?"
Doug: " I...I tried but...they keep changing their minds! Everything I do and touch turns to shit!!" *continues to sob piteously*
Spider: "What a pussy." *sakes head*
Doug: *narrows eyes* "Fuck you!!!~~*stammers*~~..and ...and ...your a motherfucken Spider...wtf do you know about anything???!!!!"
Spider: "Look all I'm saying is this, you should have the balls to do what you want, even if some people may not like it." *The spider lesighed and shruged*
Doug: *looks thoughful* "Perhaps your right, maybe I need to just do what I think is good and let the chips fall where they may! Yes, let my work RING TRUE into the GOLDEN HALLS OF POSTERITY FOR ALL TIME!!!!" *Strikes epic pose*
Spider: "Are you serious?"
Doug: "No."

A lot of people may be confused. For those of us that have forgotten the Hobbit; Radagast (the wood wizard) is not the shape shifting bear man that gives the company shelter before they enter Mirkwood. That man's name is Beorn. Just thought I should clear that up before people start saying Radagast was in the Hobbit.
-
03.10.2013 - 19:02 | jz1337He was mentioned wasn't he? I also thought he was still the one to tell gandalf about the necromancer (coughcoughsauron), and then Gandalf runs off to deal with him. Not sure who told him though.

Tolkien was the first to unite many of these concepts in a single fictional universe. Also, while the traditional concept of a wizard is fuckin' old, most modern fantasy takes a lot of cues from LOTR and The Hobbit for how to portray a typical wizard.
To use TVTropes terms, Tolkien is less of an Ur Example or Trope Maker than a Trope Codifier.

12.17.2012 - 21:02 | 94MICK19The Eagles aren't mere animals that can be summoned at random. They are their own faction, as in don't have to get into anything they don't want to.

12.31.2012 - 14:43 | Bauglir100I don't know where you got that last bit, but dragons are naturally attracted to gold. If it's shiny and has value, dragons will go straight for it.
And Smaug was probably the only dragon that exploited gold that way; All the other dragons didn't bother protecting their underbellies with armor.
-
Tom Bombadil is not a good character and is a WAY bigger plot hole then riding the Eagles ever was. Having a character that can hold and use the ring without any influence undermines the entire set up of how dangerous the ring is. When the ask him if he could help he doesn't have a good answer as to why he can't. Tom Bombadil was rightfully left out of the movies.
-
Tom Bombadil gives a perfectly reasonable explanation of why he can't help. His powers are only useful on his own land. If you read the silmarillion, you'll see that it was already predetermined that the devices of Sauron would fail, so Tom having authority over the powers of the ring (on his own land only) didn't change anything. The wisest character in the book, Gandalf, also addressed that plot hole by explaining that even Tom Bombadil's powers couldn't stop the forces of Mordor. He stated that once all else had been taken over, Sauron could overwhelm Tom Bombadil and take the ring.
Furthermore, Tom's chapter contributes to the story by putting something truly good in it and gives the readers a breath of relief after all of the suspense that came before it. After all, if there is nothing good to fight for, then why fight?

So you're still doing bum reviews, which aren't very good to be honest but no more nostalgia critic, oh the irony.
-
12.18.2012 - 03:44 | MrThorbjoernI can tell you why Tadagast and the white council were in this movie. As you said yourself once: Show, dont tell. You have to us different ways for a movie. What works for a book doesnt mean itll work for a movie. in the book its only mentioned. In the mobie we see it happen. Fine for me.
And te eagles... I always thought they are kinda deus ex machina, and kinda politicians. You know? when the world is lost they just...fly away an stuff... No need to endanget themaelves.... An i dont think there are that many left too.

You know, most of the added scenes in "The Hobbit" are actually to be found in the appendices to the Lord of the Rings, as well as in the Silmarillion: and while they're not part of the original novel, they do add a lot of context to a tale that was formerly only very tangentially related to the rich history of Middle Earth.
Sure, part of the decision to turn this project into three films instead of just one was to squeeze more money out of it. But I, for one, am quite happy to see more of the Council, the Necromancer, the corruption of the Great Greenwood, and the Wizards than just the scant references provided by the original novel.
Oh, and I might be one of the few Tolkien afficionados who did not miss Tom Bombadil at all. That whole episode always stood out like a sore thumb, disrupting the narrative flow without adding anything significant to the larger context of the tale. It's a disjointed mess.
-
12.27.2012 - 04:42 | sunnylNo they're not from The Appendices, I thought they would be before I saw it, but they aren't.
Its all made up for the movie, almost completely rewriting the history of the dwarves and The Necromancer in order to compress hundreds of years into a few days.
For starters Azog is supposed to be dead, not in the first battle of Moria, but in a later one when Thorin and Dain sought revenge for Thror's death and Dain slew him before the gates.
The meeting wherein Saruman attempts to dissuade action against The Necromancer took place centuries before The Hobbit.
Gandalf entered into Dol Guldur, which was not a ruin, to investigate the necromancer, found Thrain there and got the key and map from him.
The meeting of The White Council to force out The Necromancer happens at the time of the Hobbit, too late to stop him, and its urged by Saruman who wants to force Sauron away from the Gladden Fields.
There's a lot more changes too, and every time they change something the movie is less good than the book.
And as the first half of The Hobbit is rather weak, that is saying something.

12.31.2012 - 14:49 | Bauglir100You do realize that they already put a shitload of money into these movies, right?
And it's fan-service, not a cash grab.
-
01.13.2013 - 00:32 | aaron419It was supposed to be just two movies "An unexpected Journey" and "There and back again", but for some reason, the movie companies wanted more money, so they put "The Desolation of Smaug" right in between the other two
