12.11.2012 - 18:42 | ShleckyI knew there'd be at least one comment by the time I finished watching it. Unfortunately, I assumed that it'd say something meaningful.

It looks like Chester is turning into the Nostalgia Critic. That could be a weird plot for the next year movie.

12.11.2012 - 20:25 | TJgamerNeat review! I always feel so bad for Charlie Brown. Everyone hates him for no reason.
And, I'm going to beg again, please review The Snowman (THAT movie scared me! When the snowman watched TV and when the cat got frightened)!
Oh...and maybe...Elf? Hilarious movie!

12.11.2012 - 21:53 | CJ-1Yeah, I still can't even explain why I like Charlie Brown. EVERYONE just seems to talk about it, so I figure it must be a BIG deal to watch it and not miss it.
It's like a special event that takes plae every year. Everyone's constantly waiting for it to come, counting down all the way to the last seconds until it's on.
Then, finnally, they all RUN to the television, turn it on, and wait for the show to start!
In the end, they're satisfied!
So, yeah, it's a big deal! I even heard in some previews with kids saying, "It's better than ordinary videos."

P.S. There's a theatrical Charlie Brown movie coming out soon.

I can't find much fault with this logic. It IS a little hard to explain what makes it a good Christmas special. One thing, like you mentioned, is the music, which is excellent (and I'm saying that as someone who HATES Christmas songs). I also like that it's upfront about the fact that Christmas is about Jesus. Other Christmas specials leave that out and try to say that Christmas is for everyone, which isn't true, and it annoys the hell out of me.

Except the vast majority of Christmas traditions were stolen from pagan holidays that predate Christianity, and most modern scholars actually date the birth of Christ to be sometime in the summer. So really Christians basically stole 99% of the holiday from others, and then hypocritically claim that they're the only ones allowed to celebrate it.

I always loved this special, I don't even believe in God and I still found Linus's speech at the end to be heart warming. Trying to explain the reasons for it being a good special is as difficult as trying to explain why Peanuts is so popular to begin with, it's difficult to really pinpoint where its charm comes form. But, if I had to come up with one reason, I'd say it's because Peanuts is so genuinely childlike.

Charlie Brown Christmas is great IMO. It's a kid who wants to know if there is more to this holiday than just commercial BS, which all of his friends take part in. They even skew the morals and focus of the birth of Jesus in their Christmas pageant (Christmas Queen).
Charlie Brown finds out that it's really a very small, simple thing like a humble birth in poor conditions that makes Christmas what it is. He also sees it now as a very beautiful thing. The dinky tree among all the fancy aluminum trees becomes beautiful as well. I think its popular because it is simply heart warming, and I think its actually very funny as well IMO.

I love this movie, its one of those Charlie Brown movies that is mandatory you always watch at our house every holiday. lol
However, Charlie Brown's character always seem to annoy me sometimes. I mean, it's not like I hate him or anything, he does have his moments. But I just find myself gravitating more towards Lucy's character than Charlie Brown. I don't know why.
*puts some coins in Chester's plastic cup* ^^

I was the biggest "Peanuts" fan when I was a kid. I have nearly all of the books now. It's the only Christmas special I watch every year.

12.27.2012 - 14:09 | EbalanceThe point of the Charlie Brown X-mas special is while it acknowledges the "true spirit" of X-mas, it also points out some of the really stupid stuff. I think my favorite part, aside from the "Linus & Lucy" song... yeah... that's what it's called, is the part when Lucy decides that b/c she found the word "sister" in the Bible that means Linus is obligated to get her a present. Also the part with the "horrible" rendition of Jingle Bells. It manages to even point out the weirdness of traditions of any kind, be they religion-based, or "commercial."
Aside: What do you have against Rankin Bass? You don't seem to like anything they've done. Personally, I even really like their interpretation of "LOTR" even though it's only about 1/2 of the third book. Sure, there are some totally bizarre character designs, and one or two "not best" songs, but unlike any other adaptation, it captures the SPIRIT of TOLKIEN. It totally astounded me why in the Peter Jackson version when they: A) made Frodo so incredibly weak, B) entirely left out Sam's moment with the Ring, and C) They had Frodo and Sam separate for no reason, and this made the film LONGER than if they had stuck to the book version.
I think I get it though, now. "Back in the day" they seemed to care more about the message than the style. I was thrilled to be able to recently get the Original Theatrical Cuts of the Star Wars Trilogy (not the f***ing prequels) and I recalled two things: 1) People seem to not like the ewoks, but they are completely essential to the message of the film. Leaving them out would be like leaving the hobbits out of LOTR. 2) In the 2004 cut, George Lucas destroyed all 6 movies in one tiny edit: he changed the "ghost" of Anakin from his older self to his younger self. THE WHOLE POINT WAS HE WAS STILL GOOD!!! Not that his "good self" died when he "turned" to the Dark Side.
So now I think I am starting to understand that the cultural milieu has changed so drastically from 30 to 40 years ago that people don't seem to even understand the significance of the films of that time. So I guess I can't blame the Bum for "not getting" this movie.

Lol.
Anyway, great video.
