They really scare the shit out of me, too. Even to this day I can't stand watching any of those movies.

I guess even as a little kid I knew the animation in the Rankin-Bass specials was . . . um . . . really really bad (it's like all of their money went towards the big-name stars and cameos rather than the special itself). But the puppets were never really scary to me, and I was scared of Barney the Dinosaur. The puppets have a dorky nostalgic charm to them (except in that new one they released a few years ago, the Miser Brothers Christmas special I think, that one just blew). Kind of like art projects made by first-graders; they're not really good, but they tried.

That's just how stop-motion animation was at the time. If you look at other stop-motion animated films from that period, you'll see they all had the same problem. Look at Jason and the Argonauts or the original Clash of the Titans. Their animation looks similar. Remember, there was no digital back then, so film had to be developed before animators got to see what they did. It was really hard work.

Wonder if there is a deep psychological connection between the fear Chester has of the wonderfully beloved Rankin Bass Characters, and Doug's eternal fear of his immortal overlord Teddy Ruxbin?…….Naw.

I've always enjoyed Rankin Bass stopmotion specials, they had a particular charm that draws me back to them. The animation done on them still amazes me and I wanted to know how they did half of the effects most of the time!
Sorry if they still cause nightmares to those who can't stand em! At least they aren't as creepy as the puppets from the old Thunderbirds TV show (apologies to fans of the show in advance!) Something about those puppets remind me of a doll that waits for you to fall asleep to kill you!! This is also why I can't watch Team America in one sitting! (;_;)

12.09.2012 - 18:18 | JannieJubileeI had to google what Rankin Bass was and the only answer I can give Bum? Nostalgia imposed on us by those who grew up with only 4 tv channels. Sick and twisted forms of nostalgia. (Though I will forever love the island of Misfit Toys)

12.09.2012 - 19:39 | tomrule123Believe it or not, if there's one short that's the darkest of them all... it'd be "The Little Drummer Boy". Before asking, "what? The Little Drummer Boy"? It's pure happiness, right? ... not exactly.
This special had a scene that, for a family Christmas special, is pretty dark. Where exactly am I talking about? ... it's the scene when it was in the past, and the drummer boy first gets the drum from his parents. As the night scene starts... oh boy.
Other than that, it has okay songs, the drummer boy isn't that memorable... and not-so-great... Jose Ferrer does well in his performance, the writing is great, and the ending... damn, is it heart-warming.
As for the Rankin/Bass stopmotion in general... bless Japan for making these possible on a low-budget.

Ok,if I don't hear the words "CHANGE,YOU GOT CHANGE?!" soon we're gonna have a prublem here...
Honestly,of all the Rankin Bass Xmas specials my favorite is one of the last one they made called The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. It was based on a book written by Wizard of Oz author L.Frank Baum. It's the story of how Santa Claus grew up,but with an epic almost LOTR-like twist. Hell, there is even a battle between the orc-like Awgwas and the forces of Ak,the Gandalf-like Master Woodsman of the World. Check it out, you'll be surprised by it.

12.09.2012 - 21:56 | DacilrielI just re-watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer last night! It made me giggle!
I agree that the visuals are really bad, but it's never bothered me. They were low-budget and the technology for stop-motion animation has come a long way since then. There are so many Rankin-Bass specials that it would probably be worth going over each of them because some are better than others. Still, while I've heard you compain about them a lot in the past it's good to know some of your reasons for hating them.
The one thing I never understood was how Rudolph grows into an adult in the first special, but in all the subsequent specials he appears in he's a yearling again.
And yes, I have creative nightmares. Once I dreamed I was being hunted by a pack of teleporting R.O.U.S.'s. :)

-
12.10.2012 - 14:06 | Stick92Shame none of these really get showed on television any more. (Especially the 'lesser known' ones like the creepy as shit Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.
Yes, I have them on tape somewhere, and the ones I don't, you could see online, but it's just not the same as watching them on television.

Even though the animation wasn't perfect and could be considered creepy by some, I think the Rankin-Bass movies are classics. I love many different types of animation and stop-motion puppets have been some of my favorites since they take a lot of time and creativity.
But besides that, I can't imagine the idea of not enjoying yourself watching the Heat Miser and Snow Miser songs and aside from that the stories are simple but well told and most have classic songs and moments.

12.10.2012 - 22:55 | VercalosSpeaking of the Rankin Bass Christmas Specials, my FAVORITE is The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, if nothing else for the opening song, Immortals. It just kicks ass.
