    Pretty much.

    Let's just hope Chester doesn't seen "Christmas Vacation 2," a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit of a non-thearticaly released sequel!
  • dougbutcher  - Schrodinger's Cat
I've never understood Schrodinger's Cat. If this movie teaches us anything, it's that you know there is a cat in the box. You don't need an advanced degree in physics when any community college student could tell you that.
  • Lotus Prince

The idea is that if you have a bomb in the box with the cat, and you're not sure whether or not it's a dud, then when the time comes for the bomb to explode, you don't know whether the cat is alive or not, so it may be in some strange state of both life and death.

Of course, realistically, it must be one or the other, but we don't have a way of knowing, so it raises questions.

actually its poison and whether or not the cat is alive.

Schrodinger's cat is stupid anyway. either the cat is dead, or it isnt.

also, it IS very hard to renovate a coffee can.

The version I looked up online said something with radioactive decay. :-P

Oh well, the point still stands.

Also also, Schrodinger himself posited the cat idea as "ridiculous."
  • Semudara
    avatar
YES, that was the point. Schrodinger was actually satirizing the idea. It's SUPPOSED to be ridiculous. Thank you for realizing this.

The original experiment deals with quantum entanglement and the state of a subatomic particle and whether observation or measurement causes the collapse into a decayed nucleus or undecayed nucleus.

While you gave a shout out to 99% of everybody in the movie, you forgot that this was Julia Louis-Dreyfus's big Role before "Seinfeld"...Also, it was one of the Only times you got to see the Voice of "Betty Boop" on screen.

I have to disagree with "Remember a Time when Chevy Chase was funny" Community is an awesome show...

Wait... never mind... he HATES Community, I take back that comment...

He just quit two episodes before the season finished filming. Supposedly, Pierce Hawthorne was based on his real-life personality, and from what I've read I believe it.

Either way, he was still funny IN it. Frankly, it's a show Doug should really check out sometime. It has the kind of humour he tends to compliment. And it's awesome. :3
  • Riou  - Quantum mechanics
Just wanted to point out that since 'alive' and 'dead' are not eigenstates of the hamiltonian, they are not definite states, and thus there will be some spread in observations of cats in boxes. We tend to draw a distinct line between life and death, when there really is no such distinction to be found in nature. Life is simply some arrangement of atoms, or - more fundamentally - a particular state which satifies the time-dependent Schrödinger-equation. Since this state is not a distinct state however, there will be some spread in observations, and the expectation value might even change over time: at some times you may be more likely to find the cat alive rather than dead.

BUt the Paradox is just an exageration of the concepts presented in those mathematical principles that are the fundament of quantum mehcanics. States are so intuitively a definite posibility with no relation to an observation that thinking that if an atom has decayed or not is dependant of the observation seems as a flaw of quantum mechanics, ehich said cat is just am exagereted metaphor for. Of course there are parts of the theory that don't match, but looking at the paradox with that much detail is missing the point Shrödinger wanted to make when he postulated it. He could have just made a thought experiment of an isolated radioactive atom and the observation being if it decayed or not, but the absurdity of the point is reinforced with a living creature. Shrödinger's Cat is meant to show that quantum mechanics doesn't work, but it has somehow been translated into the idea that they are counterintuitive.

I think you're all fucked in the head! We're ten hours from the fucking fun park and you want to bail out. Well I'll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation, it's a quest. It's a quest for fun, I'm gonna have fun and you're gonna have fun, we're all gonna have so much fucking fun we'll need plastic surgery to remove our goddamn smiles! You'll be whistling Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah out of your assholes! I gotta be crazy; I'm on a pilgrimage to see a moose! Praise Marty Moose! Oh, shit! [Rusty: Dad you want an aspirin or something? ,as Rusty touches Clark's shoulder] Clark: "Don't touch!"

    Yes.

Best Chevy Chase Moment Ever. ^.^

I also enjoyed European Vacation; one of my nostalgic movies. Watched it a lot mainly because my siblings were laughing so much.

As previously stated: The "absurdity" of the Schrodinger-cat-paradox only becomes apparent when one claims that there is a distinct difference between being alive and dead. The cat actually exists in a quite distinct quantum state, but this state contains the possibility both of being alive and dead upon observation. We just have to adopt a different ontology, where we accept states rather than "things" as the fundamental building blocks of reality, and recognize that the categories we use in everyday life (the difference between life and death) are not applicable at this lower level.

Don't start the whole Schrodinger's cat thing again. Just see the comments for Linkara's review of Silent Hill dead/alive #1&2. You can get several essays about the fucking thing.
  • Cirrra
Yes...I recall Linkara himself said he was sorry he brought it up. It was supposed to be a tiny, wafer-thin little joke....

How is it suddenly occurred discussions about quantum mechanics and Schrodinger's cat in the video about National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Chevy Chase, and about when the last time he was funny!!?

Oh yes, Christmas doesn't make any sense at all such as why do people like to kiss underneath a weed, how did eggnog get it's name when there's no nog in it, and why does people decorate a tree that would be more practically used as firewood? Oh Bum, please enlighten us with your wisdom.

I do like this movie. It makes me laugh and most Christmas comedies now are just awful. I can't remember the last time I saw a good Christmas comedy, but luckily, I have Chester for that!

This movie is one of our traditional movies we used to watch every year. It was so much fun to watch and one of my favorite scenes was when the SWAT team broke into the house while "Here Comes Santa Clause" played in the background.

Such great memories watching this movie with my family. Too bad I can't say the same for the horrible sequel.

This is THE Christmas-movie for me. No other movie will ever be as Christmassy. I've watched it twice this year already. I never watched the sequel, though, but I've heard it sucks balls. The only thing I hate about this movie is that it's supposed to be funny that a cat dies a painful death. But I'm a big ol' cat-lover, and I always hated that in movies, when a cat dies, it's usually funny, but when a dog dies, it's the most tragic thing ever. Not that a dog's death isn't tragic. But again, that's just a personal pet peeve with movies. Other than that, I love every second of this film, and I'll watch it every year religiously as usual.

On the Chevy Chase point he's funny in Community but that's more to do with the writing of the character Pierce Hawthorne. Besides he's not the funniest character (that would be Abed who reminds me of myself but funnier).

Why do people think that Christmas doesn't make sense...? Is it some kind of joke I don't get..?
