Wow. Breaking Dawn part 2 came out, and you only release a DVD special?? I was waiting for a Bum/Critic savage of it!

(though this was HYSTERICAL -- Bum, you made me want to go SEE the Scott Pilgrim movie!)

Disregard the haters. :V I would highly recommend it. The comic being better doesn't mean the film isn't great too.

I really dug this movie. It is immensely entertaining, and Edgar Wright is a god damn genius.

This was hilarious! I'd be interested in seeing a doug review of scott pilgrim, as I enjoy the movie, but I'll be damned if this wasn't funny/true.

This movie was fun and stylish, but it suffered painfully from abbreviation of the source material. It would have been better to cut out several of the evil exes, and leave in more of the characterization and character development. In the novels, you could see why Scott + Knives didn't work (Scott was an 20 something manboy creepily indulging a high schooler's crush). You actually got to see some characterization & development for Ramona, so that you as the audience connected with her, and got to see how their relationship became more than the simple infatuation it started as. As it is, the film kept the personality and style, but lost the heart and message.
  • Floweramon
Agreed. Plus, it suffers from having come out before the last book was released, so some of the reveals and wrap ups that explain everything are lost in the movie.

Minor correction; It was released after all the books came out, but much of the development and writing on it was indeed done before all the books were finished.
  • Dracain
I actually think it would have worked best if they did two movies. I mean, in the books, there is a timeskip between 3 and 4, and it would give more time to detail the characters, without taking out any of the more important elements. Which would have been great, because the way they portrayed Ramona in the movie made no sense as to why Scott would even want to go out with her (as the bum said here).

Having read the comics, I agree. A lot of people who only saw the movie believed that Scott should have been with Knives. However, in the books, she goes crazy after Scott breaks up with her and becomes a stalker, which we only get a hint of in the movie. If it's not okay for a guy to do that, why should it be okay for a girl to do so? I also remember the books being wittier. Lastly, the comic's ending was 100X better! Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but I was so hoping to see that come up in the big screen! I will only say this, like 20 Ramonas fight Gideon! Seriously everyone, go read the comics NOW! It's only 6 volumes. (*Pst*If you're broke like me, you can read them online...)

is saying "The book was way better, in fact compared to the book, the movie wasn't really that great" even really necessary anymore? the ONLY thing that the movie had going for it was that all the clever references and visual jokes were now in cool looking special effect form instead of black and white graphic novel picture on paper form. besides that, yeah, the movie kinda sucked compared to the books...but the books were awesome!

also, Hi old blip player! I miss you......a lot...

Good news, the book is now in colour, and much bigger. I did like the film though.

God I hate this movie with a fiery passion.

One of the absolute worst movies I have ever seen.

Scott isn't a likeable character. I wanted him hit by a bus.

Seemingly unrelated question for scientific curiosity: have you seen Evangelion, and if so, what is your opinion on the character of Shinji? I ask because I suspect it might be similar to your opinion on Scott.

Not making a judgment call on your opinions either way, just to be clear. I'm just curious about the way people view hard-to-like characters in media.

"Scott isn't a likeable character. I wanted him hit by a bus."

Yeah, yeah it's true, but that was supposed to be the point. Scott was a deliberate deconstruction of that kind of "lovable slacker" archetype, and the books pulled it off better, with Scott coming off more charming initially (thanks largely to being a cutesy drawing instead of a human actor), but especially because the last third? Half, maybe? of the series is spent laying out just how casually, carelessly, yet willfully awful Scott is and always was, and ends with him owning up to it and trying to change.

Even in the books it's a bit cludgy, but in the film they just delete his entire character arc, and it's like we're supposed to accept him and root for him as exactly the kind of terrible character that he was supposed to be a criticism of. And OF COURSE it just doesn't work.

It's fun to see favorite characters in live action, and some of the actors they got were perfect for their parts, and the movie certainly captured the energy and personality and ambiance of the books. But without the heart, there's just no reason anyone who isn't already a fan should care.

I never heard about the books this movie was based on, however after watching the movie it's basically what I came for. It's Awesome!

I'll admit, I went to see both films: Scott Pilgrim and Expendables each day, and Scott Pilgrim was the film I had no anticipation to see but, in the end, turns out to be a really, really ambitious great film. Sure there are here and there some parts are unexplained, but I am sure repeated views can help and it's not that hard to connect them (after all, I'm a Torontonian too!). Then again, there are those who read the books could tell me better than what the movie can do.

So can someone correct me if the movie did follow all the volumes closely to fit in into a feature length film? Because I recall the last volume ended exactly what the film ended.

Oh well, all I can is I'm glad I saw this film in theaters and I'm happy it took few years to get the recognition than it did when it opened on the first day along with The Expendables (by the way, Expendables 2 was an improvement from the first. How could people overlook SP to see The Expendables is beyond me >_>)

Thanks for the video (I don't have the DVD so this is okay).

Only the very, very ending was like in the volume (with Ramona and Scott walking through the door), and even that was condensed. So much went on in the final volume and I don't want to spoil it to people who haven't read it yet. Basically Ramon actually fights Gideon with Scott, not Knives at all. Scott realizes he's no better than Gideon and gains the Sword of Understanding, not Self-Respect. The movie, of course, took a lot out of the books, which will take a lot of time to explain. Still. I would have preferred that there were two movies instead of one. Honestly, the last volume would have made a great movie on it's own and could have worked. Ramona left Scott for months, so the first film could have ended when she left, and the second film could be the last volume, which takes place 4 months later.

i loved both both the books and the movie but i reread the books a dozen times and compared to the movie and wow they miss alot and they only did books 1-5 then had to add the ending on but other then that edger wright is amazing and cant wait for ant man :D

I mean, you really try to take seriously a guy who has to beat seven ex-boyfriends on the main plot? No! if you make me choice between Street Figther movies, DOA movie, or Tekken Movies, Scott Pilgrim beat them all by far. If the comic books are better or not well, I know a lot of bad comic book movies with mediocre special effects, bad acting and worse plot -Green Lantern, Hulk, Superman Returns, Dragon Ball Revolution, Daredevil, Spawn...- yeah, it's a crazy bet that they try to do on the movie, but for me works, specially because they try a few new things that they could use on other movies.

this review made me realize I probably only enjoyed Scott Pilgrim because it was exactly like wandering around ACen drunk.

I was looking up some stuff on the movie and apparently one of the ideas for an alternate ending was to have a new report staying a pair of teens had committed seven murders, suggesting it was a dream. I would have liked to see that ending but it really would have gone too far from the comics.
  • BB Shockwave

LOL, that'd have been an awesome ending. I mean, even in the comics, how do they explain all this? Bystanders only see that a kid came and hit/shot people until they dissolved into coins. Never in the series does Scott ever consider that he is, y'know, KILLING PEOPLE.

That's what videogames do to kids, folks - make them forget what's real and what isn't. To stupid kids, I mean. But these days, there are more and more of those... Just check the local US news, not a month goes by without some idiot kid shooting up a school or a movie theatre...

Come on, nobody watched Scott Pilgrim for anything beyond "oooh, shiny!"
  • HankMan  - Wait a minute
Knives never saved Scott, she LET him go, and the reason they didn't work is because he was in his twenties and she was in Highschool. Romana was the one who was always saving Scott. How did you miss all that?

Oh right, you're the bum. You were high :P

Scott Pilgrim embodies pretty much everything I HATE about this... "new generation", and by Jove, this movie is a great way to display them all in one big package.

But mostly, yeah - the moral of the story is, don't go for the hot chick friend who is totally into you, go for the emo mysterious bitchy bitch for whom you have to perform menial tasks and generally humiliate yourself. Nice lesson there, folks.

Yay! I always wanted to see this review. I love Scott Pilgrim. I read the books before I saw the movie, so I never saw Ramona as a bitch, though after watching this review, I can see how she came out that way. In the books, she is much more developed and I remember her actually being nice. I remember Knives went kind of psycho after Scott broke up with her. I found her annoying. She was stalking him like crazy. And I kept thinking, "Jesus, let him GO! He's not fucking worth it." Knives has serious esteem issues. She finally lets him go, though, and disappears in the comics (to college!). But yeah, it's funny you mention the Twilight complex, because having, unfortunately, read the books, I feel the same thing happened. Jacob was MUCH more of a jerk in the books and incredibly possessive of Bella, whereas Edward was willing to let her free because he loved her. I guess it's a stupid Hollywood thing. Hopefully I can change that. >:) Though I can't help but wondering, if you're releasing DVD exclusives for Bum Reviews AND That Guy with the Glasses, does that mean you will be ending them soon? O-O

I thought the movie was pretty fun, but at the same time I didn't like it, which is a bit strange.

It definitely is enjoyable to watch just because of how quirky and random it is, and atmosphere is nice, but as a movie, I don't think it's very good. It's almost hard to describe, the characters aren't likeable despite Scott's quirky appeal - I don't mean that in the sense that that they are good but evil characters, I mean they just plain aren't well-written characters. Putting aside its appreciable quirkiness, the movie is just a mess. The progression, the events, all of it just don't make sense, nor do they even work.

But with all that in mind, it's merely an 'eh, okay' movie. What irritates me even more is the fanbase. Like the majority of the Portal fanbase, they never shut up about it and find the concept unfathomable that anyone could dislike the thing. I just don't like this movie, beyond all the funny and unfunny jokes, it's a complete mess that would only logically entertain fans of the comic, people who see nothing in a movie except lulz and hiccups, or people chocked up high.
  • Alaxr274  - One of the best movies ever
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is one of the best movies ever
  • Fervidor
How dare you not love one of my favourite movies!? o_O

    *starts punching people into pennies*

...Actually, I was seriously expecting a joke based on the fact that Scott's enemies turn into CHAAANGE when the die. XD
  • Ericho  - I can't believe this!
The entire premise of the movie was people turning into change when they died! How could you not mention that?! Do you watch Spill.com? I know they made a joke like that, so maybe you didn't because it had already been done. This was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Eh, the TGWTG world of magic guns, satanic teddy bears, and appearances by characters from the things they review doesn't make much more sense.
