Oh hey, another person who's heard of Lackadaisy. That's a great webcomic and you're right about the comedy/drama coming together nicely.
As for this movie, I have to say I'm much more enthusiastic about it than I was for the third and fourth movies (not even seen four, but I don't intend to). I won't see it in 3D, but I'll definately give it a watch.

Actually it's 4 direct to DVD specials since they just added a Halloween one. When was this promise of 7 Shrek movies? Never heard of it.
I can't see why people wouldn't like Pixar (except for the Cars movies) and Dreamworks (except for The Madagascar movies, Over the Hedge and Shark Tale). Especially since Dreamworks is also a blanket for 4 of their underrated 2D movies and 3 excellent Aardman films (not to mention several live action movies). Istill don't see why everyone hates Shrek 4, I thought it was solid and much better than 3.
Anyway I agree with the actual review, the tonal shift was a bit jarring but not a deal breaker. I'll still enjoy watching this movie when it comes out on DVD.

Okey way back in highschool, before Shrek 2 came out, I went to Dreamwork's website & the Shrek Website & read in interviews that they had planned 7 Shrek movies. I told everyone I knew in school that liked Shrek. Of course each movie, people kept wining about how each movie was worse than the last (lies!). For me they're all one really long movie broken into parts, like Lord of the Rings.

11.07.2011 - 05:39 | CarewolfSwitch the order of these double reviews. I don't mind the spoilers in the Bum reviews, they are part of the charm, but it gets weird when Doug then tries to hint around the spoilers. It would make more sense to see the Doug review first, and then the Bum review.
Help us out and change the order next time, if this pattern still apply ;)

"Puss AND Boots"? Only Sad Panda is allowed to immediately forget what the heck he just saw. This can't end well.
Okay, I'm done pretending to be offended. Entertaining reviews as always, Doug. Looking forward to your apology.

I just saw the movie last night and thought it was cute. X3 You just want to cuddle Puss every time you see him! Liked the twist because I hadn't actually predicted it. I like when kids' movies can surprise you. But Humpty is one of the most unlikable assholes you'll ever see from a Dreamworks film. It's almost shocking.

11.07.2011 - 11:26 | Wolfram-And-HartI hope Doug finds that Puss in Boots movie in the 80's with Christopher Walken as Puss. That would be a decent Nostalgia Critic.

11.07.2011 - 11:27 | EbalanceSTOP SUPPORTING SHITTY DREAMWORKS MOVIES!!!!!
And BTW the ONLY Shrek film that isn't horribly mean and a really bad example for children is the second one.
Dreamworks films are notorious for painting TERRIBLE lessons for children. So this film is no exception... sucky...
There are a select few that don't do that, recently, the second Kung Fu Panda movie had better morality, but SHREK IS MEAN... as a series it has awful morals, and is just really full of hate.

Let parents teach their children morality, not movies, music, games or whatever else. Movies can affect people, but it's up to parents to raise them. Don't go passing the buck. Also Dreamworks moral have been steadily improving since Kung Fu Panda. Check out Monsters vs. Aliens, How to Train your Dragon and MegaMind for proof.

Aw, yes, someone needs to animate the core TGWTG crew doing the Carmelldansen. ^^ I'd watch it fifty times.
Anyway, great review on both the Bum & Doug's parts... not sure if I'll watch it or not. On one hand, enough with the Shrek sequels- the first two were good but after that, oi. On the other hand though: KITTIES!

I personally like the twists of the last third of the film (Of course what follows will be spoilers, be warned). It shows Puss was right to be so suspicious in the begging of the film, and shows how painful the schism in their friendship was when puss was elevated to town hero. But What I liked the most was that Humpty wasn't just another villain, not just "I'm bad" "Ok, -vanquish-" I love how Puss Echoes his mother with "You're better than this!" and also talks about the values of home. But hey, to each their own.
-
01.24.2012 - 00:11 | KarriI didn't care much for the end of the film.
The betrayal and monster didn't come as much of a surprise from me. It just seemed obvious.
For that matter, I liked Humpty as a villain. Ruthless, feeling wronged by everyone, great manipulator.
What I didn't like was the heel face turn. He never seemed like he had the introspection for a stunt like that.

I gotta say, I love ya Doug but watching your reviews right under the bum reviews sucks the life right out of them both. I liked it better when you just had a title card at the end of the bum review, that was enough. And for some reason your performance of chester has been, a little off the last couple times. Not sure why. Still love these, keep up the good work.

WoW, Doug! You end your reviews the same way I end phone calls.... Anyway great review. I loved the movie, and i am taking my aunt to see it for a birthday present (she's a cat lady so it works.) Personally, I found the egg as an unneeded character through half of the movie. I mean he was a good character, but once he wore the sweat suit I was little out off....
And i loved the bum the whole 'when did I get an audience' joke was killer! Hope you go and see "In Time" and "Anonymous" I'd like to hear your views on them.

Here's what I think of the Shrek series.
Shrek 1- I loved it
Shrek 2- I REALLY loved it. Best of the series
Shrek 3- It's just ok. Nowhere near as good as the last two, but still ok.
Shrek 4- Same as 3, but a little better.
Puss In Boots is my favorite character and I love that he has a spin off film. Haven't seen it yet, but can't wait to!

Sounds like they used this movie to ripoff another big budget CGI animated movie another studeo is releasing called Jack the Giant Killer in away!
I liked the 1st 2 Shrek movies but 3 didn't do anytihng for me and I haven't seen the 4th!
I did like Puss in Boots's character in those movies ad i'll probally see this one some day when it's on DVD but I ain't planning on seeing it in theaters!
I hate when the twist ending is that one of the lovable new characters turns out to be a trator or something and it ruins the rewatchablity of the film because you now know all those scenes of them being friends with the good guys is basically all a lie!
I'd like to see you do a Bum Review on Immortals when it comes out this upcoming weekend, Mr. Walker!
...And now I want to see everyone on the site doing it. And I know it will never happen... :(
The meme's probably almost old enough to be nostalgic, isn't it?
