Dc might do better in reverse. Joss Whelan is doing the Justice League movie next year, and that's supposed to spin off onto other movies like Superman, (Man of Steel) Wonder Woman and I think the Flash. Not to mention that Batman is getting a reboot which most likely will fit into JLA continuity.
The unfortunate thing is that DC movies other than the current DK trilogy haven't been using good writers or good directors since the days of Richard Donner and Tim Burton. Superman Returns being the one exception that didn't work because the director decided to both stand on Richard Donner's shoulders, but also create his own continuity... both ideas working against the other.

DC should take note on how to make a teaser from the Avengers teaser because the one from Dark Knight Rises was badly done with its clips mostly consisting of the past movies.
As for the movie, it was awesome. The action and characters were great and fun to watch. The last time I enjoyed a superhero movie as much as this was with The Incredibles.
The only fuck-up I see coming from Marvel is The Amazing Spider-Man. Peter being a rebellious emo-douche, really? Oh my God, the more I hear about it, the more my expectations are going more to the negative numbers.

To be honest, the teaser for Dark Knight actually worked because the viewer was unable to tell it was for the movie until towards the end. For Rises they should have only shown Gordon talking like in the trailer but then reveal that he was talking to Bruce(Because it was hard to tell that it was Gorden to begin with). Also I was annoyed of the chanting at the end of the trailer(I believe it was,"Nolan, Nolan, Chris, Chris, Nolan, Nolan).

07.24.2011 - 22:58 | Yeahwhatever"because the one from Dark Knight Rises was badly done with its clips mostly consisting of the past movies."
Uhmm.... What were you expecting? They havn't filmed enough footage for a full trailer, yet.
It was just a teaser. And actually, you and everyone else SHOULD consider themselves lucky, because all Teasers USUALLY show is just a logo.
Look at all the teasers (not trailers) for every other movie in the past and you'll see that they almost always consist of a logo that slowly comes into view and a narrator that says "The adventure begins, (insert month and year here.)"
The Dark Knight Rises actually featured 3 short clips from the actual film (Gordon, Bane's face, and Batman and Bane, showing his design) and revealed more than most teasers actually do. In which we learn that the villain is Bane and it is the final movie in the trilogy.
Say what you will about how much you think that is, but it's more than just a logo... which is all most teasers ever give you.
To say nothing of the fact, as i've said, that they havn't actually filmed any real footage besides that TO show. Which really isn't their fault, anyway.
I don't know why people have any right to knock the teaser when it already showed more than most teaser's do, plus the fact that nothing has been filmed.
I swear, it's like everyone instantly wants the stars, moon and entire galaxy right away without any consideration of what they should reasonably expect. And then blames Warner Brothers instead of blaming their own unrealistic and ridiculous expectations.

I dunno. I saw that trailer, and I have to say, it looks a helluva lot better than the current crap out already. Not that Toby McGuire was bad or anything, but the general direction of the recent Spider Man movies was horrid to say the least.
They were over the top on the scale of Batman Forever, as if to say yeah, our script was LITERALLY a comic book.
Emo as you may perceive the "Amazing Spider Man" trailer to be (and honestly, I'm not seeing that much emo in it) it already looks LEAGUES better than what we have already.

There were alot of good nerd films that came out this summer so far (Thor, Pirates 4, X-Men: First Class, Super 8, Green Lantern, Transformers 3, Harry Potter 7 Pt. 2, etc.), and "Captain America: The First Avenger" is one of those films. It has everything that shows why I love going to the movies, and that I will continue to do so as long as I live.
Marvel has done a really good job with the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and I have high hopes for "The Avengers."
In speaking of Avengers, Doug, any plans on reviewing the 1998 film of the same name starring Uma Thurman and Sean Connery?

I don't even agree with the main criticism that the movie felt so uneven, I just felt like it was divided into two equally well handled parts, and I was saying "this movie is really good" more often than "this feels rushed." (Actually to be honest, I thought if anything it dragged a bit more than I'd have liked, but the action was awesome anyway).
I do agree that Red Skull has no real interesting motivation, but that didn't take me out of the movie.
My favorite parts were Tommy Lee Jones and the kid that can save himself, though the effects were good too; awesome movie.

Awesome Bum review, and I think the real review is very faithful to the movie. I agree with you on most points as well, the movie did seem like they sped up the second half, personally I think they cut parts of the action scenes to shorten the movie for theatrical release. I'd like to see an extended edition when it comes out on DVD.
One thing I disagree on is the costume, I think putting him on parade after the experiment was a reasonable thing to do given the situation and it gave a plausable explanation on why it was incorporated into the final design "It's kinda grown on me." I don't think the final version was that bad though, it darkens the colors while maintaining the color scheme and incorporates more practical articles of clothing like pants instead of tights. I mean I think it's as close as you can get to a realistic uniform interpretation of a super hero spandex jump suit.

I dont mind The Bum, but Im not a huge fan.
I always wanted to know what you really thought of the movies the Bum was reviewing.
Im really happy you started doing a review for these movies as yourself.
Maybe you could delve into the Bums backlog of videos and give a quick run down of what you really thought of those movies too.
On subject, Im glad to hear Captain America is getting positive reviews, after yours and Brads opinions on it Im super hyped to see it now.
Take care Critic.

07.25.2011 - 01:10 | 7MinutesSpeaking of the rushed parts, they didn't really get into the best friend's character enough, it seemed kind of lame that they just took the build up for him, and ran you straight for the climax of his role. :(

I've never really taken Captain America very seriously. Between the outfit, the name and the shield, I just couldn't suspend my disbelief that far. Of course, Goofy in Kingdom Hearts is the only other person I know of who wears an odd outfit, has an odd name, and uses a shield as a weapon, but that was a cartoon character in a video game.
Haven't seen the movie yet. I think I'll wait and rent it.

I enjoyed Captain America too, the only thing that could have been better (imho) is the Villain. I mean, Hugo Weaving is a good actor and I liked his interpretation, but I thought it was, as you pointed out, quite standard (take over the world, nazi and stuff). Probably they should have cared a bit more for the villain, but the film was cool anyway

Gotta say, i liked Cap's costume in this...
Also, it's a Captain America movie. Who else are they going to use besides Red Skull? It's not really a standard superhero movie, anyways, so the villain isn't as important, IMO. It's a character study of a man whose moral compass is strict and unwavering, and the kinds of things a man like that can accomplish. I like how they established him as the flip side of Iron Man, pretty much the way it should be.

There's this guy, his name is hitchopottimus!
He woke up on Monday morning, and he saw that there was a Bum Review! Hurray!
What I really like about the Marvel movies is that they've done a good job of nodding to the comic, even when they're changing it. It's the little things, things that won't confuse an average viewer but will make a comic fan say, "cool, I'm glad they're acknowledging that."
For example, while it's a change from the comics, including the Howling Commandos was an awesome nod to comic fans that the film didn't have to do. For a casual fan, it was just a pretty cool squad Cap put together. For a comic fan, it's cool to see Dum Dum Dougan and the guys, and even though Cap had nothing to do with the Commandos in the comics, the idea makes perfect sense, and it's a great place to fit them into the plot.
Similarly, there are a dozen ways you could do both the "Cap feels like a fraud" scene, and the "I've got some ideas about the costume" scene, but they had him draw for both of them. Again, a nod to comic book fans who know that Cap's an artist, that doesn't really take anything away from the casual watcher or confuse them.
Thor had a similar moment, when Donald Blake's name was on the shirt he put on. Quick moment, throwaway name that could have been anything for the regular watcher, great nod to the comic fan that almost says to us, "Look, I know we're not doing the pure comic story with Donald Blake turning into Thor, but it's not because we've forgotten it, or we don't care. This story just works better for the movies."
And that's the thing with these moments. Most comic fans aren't as anal retentive with them getting everything identical as we get a reputation for being. We just want to feel like they understood and respected the source material, and if they have to change it, it's because they had a good reason, not because they didn't care. And the Marvel movies have done that.

Great vid, Chester.
And I'm looking forward to this one, when it FINALLY hits UK theatres this week. Seriously, don't they learn that this is how piracy works? Of course, some pirate discs are stolen/"borrowed" copies of the movie, don't know how it works, because I don't go in for pirated movies these days. Or pirated games for that matter. And I don't listen to much Mainstream music so I don't pirate that.
Anyways, Cap good, I go.

07.25.2011 - 06:40 | Seasidh-QuinnI think I liked Captain America better than I liked Thor, but that's mostly because Captain America combined a lot of things I liked. I absolutely love retro-futurism.
