I was really hoping to see a Bum review like this soon, and... yay! It's here!
Was trés fun to watch. It was nice to get Chester's view on things, the Swedish reviewers have been all over bad. And not as in bad reviews, but as in moronic people writing said reviews.
Awesome Bum video as always, and I really like that you've added a review where you talk about the movie as well. Usually I'd agree with that single line at the end of your review, but to have a more descriptive version is nice too.

Just came back from seeing this movie and was so glad a Bum review was up. XD One of the best Bum reviews, in my opinion. Also really glad to see a regular review, and super duper glad to see that Doug has the same opinions as I did on the film. Good movie, and I do think it's the best X-Men film so far, but was disappointed when I found out my favorite characters wouldn't be in it. But, they are doing a sequel, probably two. If they can do the action and story as well as this, and put the better characters in it, it will be way more awesome. I hope to at least see Wolverine, Storm, and Nightcrawler. Wolverine and Storm got brief cameos, and Azazel and Mystique, Nightcrawler's parents, are in the movie, so it's good possibility.

I find myself a lot more impressed when a movie/comic uses characters I don't care much for, and does the characters really well, enough that they win me over despite my general dislike/disinterest. Given that the didn't handle the "A-List" X-Men all that well in the earlier movies, I wasn't really pumped to see them anyway. But, I agree, of all the characters to use, they could have picked a more high profile cast of characters. Particularly characters like Darwin and Angel are pretty recent additions who are pretty much background characters at best even after their debuts (at least to my knowledge). Eh, what are you gunna do.
On Shaw, he's not really a big time villain by himself, necessarily, but the Hellfire Club were a fairly potent enemy at once point, and Shaw has always been a high-ranking member or leader of the team. He's also less silly (once you drop the Victorian dress theme of the Club) than characters like Apocalypse or Sinister, who would be easier to screw up, I think.

Interesting review, I just have a few quick points in response to some of the things you brought up.
Regarding Sebastian Shaw, yes he is a character from the comics, perhaps most famous for his role in the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Secondly about the continuity flaws. Most, if not all of them have to do with X-Men 3 and Wolverine. Emma Frost in Wolverine was ignored for this film for example. The young Jean Grey sequence was from X3 as well as Beast. With that in mind, I happen to believe that Singer and Vaughn are essentially ignoring X3, which is fine with me since it was a terrible movie. Singer had nothing to do with it and since he's the producer on First Class and co-wrote the story, I think he made the decision to ignore it.
The only things that contradict Singer's films are Hank McCoy appearing on a TV screen looking normal and Magneto helping to build Cerebro. However the Hank McCoy shot in X2 can be explained away if you assume that Hank continued to work on his cosmetic cure and by X2 had at least a temporary cure. As for Cerebro, Magneto and Professor X are friends and with 40 years between First Class and X1 it's not inconceivable that they put aside their differences on more than one occasion and tried to work together with X-Men 1 being when Magneto finally decides it's just not worth the effort any more.
Every other nitpick is from the comics, like Cyclop's younger brother Alex Summers (Havoc) being about 15 years older than Scott and possibly being his dad in this continuity.
Interestingly Mystique and Azazel are Nightcrawlers parents so it will be interesting to see if they hook up in any sequels now that they are both on the same side with Magneto.

06.06.2011 - 00:53 | rogers88There is a difference between Comic Book Universe and Movie Universe. Hell in the Ultimate X-men Universe they make Alex the OLDER brother. So it is safe to say that in the X-men movie universe will be on its own, separated from the comics.

Xavier's comment to her, "I just can't see you that way" (IIRC), was referring to the idea of dating her AS HIS SISTER. He viewed her as a true sister in this manner, so of course he would disregard the question as such. He makes a point of saying that he doesn't understand why she feels the way she does simply because he always saw her the way he did when they first met.

You know, if this went by the animated series storyline: That would make Professor Xavier Rogue's uncle. You know, because in a way Mystique "adopted" Rogue when she ran away from home and acted like her surrogate Mom, and that would also make Nightcrawler and Rogue foster-siblings.
It makes alot of sense if you have seen the animated series. >___>

Nice review though I don't think it's the best X-men movie made (but it is better than X-3 and Wolverine) but mostly because of continuity issues (And I thought Wolverine was bad about this). Also, it may be nit-picking, but you called Magneto boring? He was my favorite Marvel Villain (after Dr Doom) but then, everyone has different taste.

I think he's rather referring to the fact that in most X-Men continuities she's older than in the movies. Depending on which ones, I've seen her anywhere from late teens to late 20s. The only exceptions I can think of are Wolverine and the X-Men and X-Men: Evolution, both animated series which are fairly recent, and WatXM mostly made her a teenager to ride upon the fame of the movies. X-Men: Evolution did it because it was focusing on all but a few of the X-Men and Brotherhood as teenagers.

06.05.2011 - 21:27 | jdh1271I gotta say I'm glad they didn't use the typical X-Men because I've kind of grown tired of them to be honest.
I thought this was really enjoyable so far out of the films I've seen this year (which admittedly is not that much) is the best.

They did have one of my favorite mutants, namely Magneto but I really didn't care for it. To me it felt really rushed. I think they tried to fit far too much into it. The actions in this movie should've at least been enough to fill two movies. I mean, Magneto and Xavier going from being friends to enemies could be a movie by itself. The side changes didn't make a lot of sense and I think they just had too many characters some of which were entirely pointless. I only want to add that I like Magneto because when he's done well it's easy to not only sympathize with him but to take his side and there really aren't a lot of comic book villains like that.

I still think they going to ignore the Wolverine Movie and the 2rd movie contenuity to repair the damsge from when singer left! I stll know there are contenuity errors but they're not as big as Xavier still walking in the 80s and Emma some how being 12 in the late 70s and in her early 30s in the early 60s!
you got a weird laugh though...
