12.20.2010 - 02:12 | MidesI really wasn't feeling this movie from the very first trailer, and the last movie I saw that was "short on story, but big on fun action and visuals" was Avatar (yeah, I don't go to movies much), and it wasn't that good.

So you tear into avatar for being nothing but an effects movie and a minimal plot....but this one which is even more of an effects movie and less of a plot gets away with it?

That's BS man, Tron Legacy's story didn't make any sense AT ALL. I mean, with Avatar, sure it's a cliched and unoriginal story, but at least it's competent. There were so many freaking plot holes in Tron and the action was so incredibly minimal that I couldn't help, but despise every minute of watching it. Doug already pointed out the biggest ones. Why couldn't Jeff Bridges use the power he used at the end all the time. And how come at one moment the enemy couldn't make it to where Jeff Bridges was and another moment they could. How come there was only 2 minutes of Tron in a movie called Tron? How was the music so bad ass, but the rest of the movie was just running away from a laughable looking bad guy. I'm surprised Doug didn't mention this, but Clue seriously looked like an early era PS2 game.
How come the Encom board meeting was surprised when people are able to pirate an OS on the internet? What happened to the personifications of computer lingo inside the grid? How did Clue know that Sam would enter the grid when he sent the text to the other Encom guy. Why did Clue try to kill Sam when he knew that he was the only one who could find his father? Why? What? Who?.... *head explodes
-
12.20.2010 - 13:18 | Rurik
In order.
1: He didn't rejoin with Clu sooner because it would kill him, Quorra said as much when Sam asked that question.
2: They could go there the whole time, but they didn't know where he was. And as was pointed out their vehicles weren't designed to go off the grid so they couldn't effectively search for him.
3: Tron wasn't the main character.
4: Because they couldn't fight him on his own terms, the plan was to escape to the real world and delete him from there.
5: Because it hadn't been released yet, it's normal for your software to be pirated, but not when the only people who are supposed to have access currently are people within the company.
6: He didn't, he didn't need it to be Sam specifically, that was just icing on the cake. Alan would have worked just as well
7: Because trying to kill Sam would draw his father out of hiding, which it did.
-
12.20.2010 - 20:09 | Quantum Wolf
-
12.20.2010 - 20:19 | Hatchet90Okay, I'll give you 1.
2. Quorra said that they couldn't go off the grid when her dune buggy could, but suddenly just because he traveled there, Clu could?
3. You're telling me that a movie called Tron doesn't have a character called Tron? 'kay
4. Not really sure what plot hole you're referencing there buddy.
5. Fine, sure it hadn't been released, just like movies haven't been illegally downloaded before their opening *sarcasm. Not only that, but the fact that the media acted within seconds of it being uploaded and their stock was falling within seconds was absolutely laughable.
6. If Alan said his name as a user, there would be no surprise, no "take me to your leader", Alan would've died within seconds of being put into the game. Not only that, but you've created a plot hole in your post by stating that killing Sam would draw his Father out of hiding, but then you go on to say that it wouldn't matter who he put in the grid, just as long as it was somebody.
7. Your answer is absolute bull, if he was going to kill him... how would that bring his father out of hiding? Not to mention that his father was very stubborn about leaving his palace in the first place.
Another thing I don't understand. Why would Clu have only 4 people to be on guard of the "key" to his domination of the earth (Flynn's disc). It's not really a plot hole, it's just insanely stupid. How did Quorra know that the train would take them straight to the portal. And how the fuck did she not know that it takes them to the middle of the enemy base.
Face it dude, this movie is a mess. No personifications of computer lingo, no memorable story, no good action scenes. The light cycles were lame because there was so much room to fight that there was no feeling of claustrophobia or danger. The beginning was the only decent part of the movie, but Sam's entrance into the grid (as opposed to the awesome 1982 entrance) just shows how half-ass this movie was. To tell you the truth, not even the original was that great, so.... yeah. This movie only reminded that I need to watch the Big Lebowski again, a far superior film.
-
12.20.2010 - 21:39 | Rurik
2: She said their vehicles would malfunction, she never said they couldn't. That makes it impractical to search for him but not to go there once you know where he is.
3: I said he's not a main character, not that he's not a character at all. He wasn't really a main character in the original either, Flynn was the one who did most of the work.
5: Just because something has happened in the past doesn't mean you expect it to happen. Houses burn down all the time, are you constantly expecting your house to burn to the ground?
6 and 7: You can't deny that it worked, Flynn came out of hiding, why? Because his son was in danger. It would have worked just as well had it been Alan in danger instead of Sam, Flynn would never sit by and allow one of his best friends or his son to be killed like that. Especially not after what happened to Tron.
-
12.22.2010 - 14:34 | Hatchet90Lol, we're just going in circles aren't we? You can go ahead and adore this piece of shit if you like, and prove to yourself that it was really good, but it wasn't. You can also not really offer explanations on any of the plot holes I mentioned. 5 was the most laughable if you were to ask me. You made no mention of anything I said, but just when off into some bullshit tangent. You're probably the kind of guy who actually enjoyed the Expendables. Adios.

Dude its a movie! Movies aren't always supposed to make sense, just enjoy it,geez...but if you wanna be technical about it,here we go...
1.Clu didn't know who would have come into the Grid,he just wanted the portal to open so he could get free. When he said he had been waiting a long time for this,he meant for the portal to be open and also to get revenge on Kevin Flynn for"betraying" him,and his son being there just happened to be a great way to get revenge.
2.Second, Quorra was watching the games and saw Sam in the games as they mentioned his name to the entire crowd so if he did kill Sam,Quorra would have gone back and told Kevin Flynn and that would have angered Kevin enough to go and get revenge for his son right? And about the Key not being guarded, hello! Clu was an obsessed megalomaniac who had total domination over the grid. Do you really think that he would have calculated that Sam and Kevin would have been stupid enough to go back and get it? Thats why movie villains lose everytime because they are arrogant and stupid!
3.As you saw in the story Tron was captured by Clu and "reprogramed" to do his bidding,Tron was in the movie obviously as Rinzler so how can you say he wasnt in it?
4.Tryin to travel in the area that Kevin Flynn was hiding out at would be treacherous and dangerous without knowing exactly where to go. If you remember they picked up Kevin Fylnn's old lightcycle, obviously that tech was able to traverse that area,so Clu used that tech to "modify" his vehicles and thus were able to get there with no problem!
Another thing your not even a Tron Fan so stop bashing this great movie and get over it!

Greetings Program! Im so glad someone finally explained Tron Legacy to these people! Some people dont have the intelligence to understand a movie like that. I personally loved the movie alot. Sure the special effects were amazing, but the story was great too,and to find out that Rinzler is Tron reprogrammed? That surprised the shit outta me! I truly hope they make a sequel with Tron coming back for more though. He looked pretty awesome in the grid, and more of Tron fighting for the Users! lol
-
01.12.2011 - 21:14 | sabata2I knew it was TRON from the moment I saw his "armor".
I had recently watched TRON at home before watching Legacy so I spotted that 4 Square T on his chest immediately.
The ONLY complaint I have to grant Hatchet, is the GREATLY toned down use of computer lingo.
Hell Derezzed was used a grand total of ONCE, and that was when they were quoting, line for line, Sark's Identity Disk Introduction from the first movie.
Personally I would have preferred more Violin music that was very iconic of the first movie's score, but the Daft Punk stuff was really rather good.

12.24.2010 - 00:49 | RedwolfGiven that there was little action in the film..... your point isn't very valid at all.

Why can't the hate just die already? I might actually want to watch it.
You guys act like James Cameron is the next Uwe Boll or Ed Wood or something.
-
12.20.2010 - 23:11 | QarxIt's because the movie was a huge hit, despite it's "shortcomings". It's popular amongst the masses, and thus is popular to hate... like Twilight, or Lady Gaga.
I never saw it, which is why I put shortcomings in quotes; I can't really have an opinion on a movie I haven't seen myself... at least not without sounding like a total prick XD.
-
Maybe Avatar may not be as good as the hype put it. Maybe it IS short on story. But does that mean Cameron invariably sucks at filmmaking now?
It took him about more than 10 years after Titanic to make this movie, and when it comes out, people are bashing it left and right. Some movie buffs' standards are way too high, I swear.
At least he still has a good track record(Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens, Titanic).
-
12.31.2010 - 19:36 | TentaclesActually, if you want to get technical, the movie got mixed reviews. How about actually looking it up!?
-
01.12.2011 - 21:21 | sabata2Watch Disney's Pocahontas and pretend it was in 3D with blue aliens instead of Indians.
It's shortcomings are exactly what Shane below makes clear. It used a recycled plot and relied solely on the visuals to sell.
James Cameron definitely had some amazing movies, but this is NOT one of them.
-
Ya um the difference between Tron and Avatar is that like the prequel trilogy starwars where Avatar was trying to hide the fact that their movie focused on the Special FX. Tron was one of the first movies that created the effects we all criticize today and had no qualms over admitting that we would probably love the effects more than the story anyway, still a good story but over the top computer effects are what the tron series are all about. Everything else including Avatar are POS and their only excuse is "If Tron could do it why couldn't we?"

I just watched TRON Legacy and Tron all in one sitting last night. Both films had an intense soundtrack, killer visuals and an excellent cast. I thoroughly enjoyed them both equally. I don't understand why so many people are giving it so much flack, it's an escapist fantasy sure, but that's what makes it so unique and fun! It even delves into the escapist philosophy constantly especially in LEGACY! Daft Punk deserves an Academy Award for their work on the score. I am rocking out to it on my iPod right now actually, huge ear orgasms indeed. Great review Doug! Keep it up!
-
12.20.2010 - 02:43 | ziggyz
Totally agree. It's one of those movies where you turn your brain off and let your imagination roam. :)
........... Though I agree it needed a little more Tron. He was kinda the Boba Fett of the movie, and only got two, brief actual Tron scenes. /fangirl-whimper I guess it made up for it by making him uber-badass with the dual ID discs.

I was thinking about seeing this one. I probably won't though, because, although good visual and effects are all well and good, I generally like the story more than visuals, except in one or two very extenuating circumstances.
Funny review Doug, as always. I loved to hear about all the dudes in this movies. In fact, I'm a little surprised 90s Kid didn't spontaneously pop out of nowhere.
-
12.23.2010 - 13:52 | Sheik90s Kid wouldn't make sense, the first movie came out in the early 1980s
Although that would have been cool XD
-
12.20.2010 - 02:54 | LeoHowlerThere really should have been more Tron in the actual movie, but the whole Rinzler thing was pretty badass and made it a bit more interesting. I was honestly hoping that he'd turn back from Rinzler into Tron and act as a concrete good guy, but what can you do? I still enjoyed it. ^^
-

Just one tiny li'l interjection. The first Tron was actually a fair success and did well in it's initial release.
Saw Legacy last night. Loved it. Just a pure fantasy movie of the type that lets your imagination take over. Very fun, cool flick. Loved the updated stuff, like the Command Ship that Sark used and the Lightcycles and such.

.....Pancake: New Moon? what the hell? what's that, a self loathing pancake who thinks she's the worse pancake on the planet for no reason and thinks she doesn't deserve syrup for no reason, who left her for no reason?
"Pancake, I will make you soggy, and so neither of us deserve to be happy, except you should be happy because I'm not there even though it's PAINFULLY OBVIOUS that my not being there will make you unhappy, you should still be happy while I run away to Mexico to sulk in my lonesome, pitiful, monstrous self. btw, did I mention that I hate myself? cause I do. sparkle"

12.20.2010 - 04:36 | Robert the Kid
-
12.20.2010 - 05:56 | Moreno XI loved this movie, and the theater I went to was very, very quiet because people don't know nothing about the world of Tron....and I'm happy about that 'cause they really want to know what's so great about the original film. And like the first Tron, the story is short and contains great visual effects, music and characters, and Tron Legacy was definitely a worthy sequel to the original....and that's saying something.
I'm happy that everyone was faithful and continue from the original. Wonderful, just wonderful. And believe me, I know this movie blows Avatar out of the water; making Avatar a joke on story and visual effects. And unlike Avatar, it had a "story" and pull it off good. Great job Doug, great job.
P.S.: Doug, you should do a new series called "Wisdom From The Dude" - babbling about everything that is wisdom (and SCIENCE!). This could give "Dudes" something to do with their lives. Think about it, we have Bums running around, we should have Dudes too. I think it can make 90s Kid feel happy that he isn't alone.
END OF LINE

Actually, Tron was in quite a lot of the movie, you just don't know it's Tron for a while. Rinzler, the double-disk guy with the slightly different red patterning is Tron, and he's in almost every scene that has the bad guys in it.
Also, some of the plot holes Chester pointed out weren't really plot holes.
-

Nice review. I giggled at the beginning when you struggled to think of something to say before "Spoilers".
Can't say I'll be going to see this movie. For one, I was never interested in the original. Sci-fi has never been much of a pull for me. Second, the whole good visuals and actions don't really pull me in. Sometimes, I can switch my brain off and just enjoy a film (Expendables), but if I'm not invested in the genre, there is no point.
-
So many people have said this film was short on plot, but with action and visuals to make up for it. Short on plot? Try NO plot. And the action sequences seemed trite and boring to me. As for the visuals... why is the new TRON world so f***ing dark?! The original had these beings that seems to glow from within and buildings that seemed made of light. The new one was like "We all wear these glow strips on our clothes so we can see." The references to the original movie were forced and pointless. (Celian Murphy as Ed Dillinger Jr? And he just appears for one scene and is never mentioned again?)
Fail, man. Epic Movie Fail.

Spoony gives his thoughts on the film (spoiler alert: he says it's terrible).
I haven't seen it yet, so I don't really have anything to say about this new movie, but I definitely enjoyed the first one for its personification of the programs (like an email program literally grabbing your email and delivering it). I'm not big on computers, but it certainly was fun to watch to say the least.

-
01.08.2011 - 21:59 | MarinerIt's kind of sad that Spoony shits on a half-decent film for an hour, yet excuses an actual disaster of cinema because of it's alleged "nostalgia".
-
12.20.2010 - 10:20 | Moreno XAh c'mon man, it wasn't a epic fail movie. Look at the bright side, it could've been worse: it would have been amazingly plotless and boring than Avatar. I can't deny myself that they could do a bit more longer and exciting, but it's Tron; an "inside-the-computer" world of Tron. I think what you are saying that is because in the original, computers in the eariler 80s has that 8-bit/16-bit feeling, and the sequel logically explains that - in the real world - 20 years later while in the computer world spend millions/trillions lightyears (I think) for the computers to advance ahead of human's life span. If you recall a scene when Sam says to his dad "Long time", Kevin reply "You have no idea", that's why The Grid was dark, visually advance and shiny on costumes.
Again, not a fail movie. It's not hard to understand a movie like Tron. Now, about that Ed Dillinger Jr. scene is anybody's question but doesn't ruin the fun ride nonetheless if you ask me.

Sorry but, this new Tron was bad. For me, it's just Disney trying to fulfill their banks by adding sequels to their some of their beloved old movies with really nothing new. I saw Alice in Wonderland before and with Tron I'm clearly seeing the pattern here made by Disney.
I saw the original Tron two weeks ago and I was really blown away. yes, the plot isn't really that interesting but the visuals and the soundtrack were totally NEW to people. The film has become a classic, but strangely, a classic that only a few people have seen.
However, this new Tron, is just nothing new. Again with a plot that doesn't look that interesting, but all that you saw in the movie was just the same thing : Lightcycles, Disk Combat and the tranpostaion cargo. Nothing new!
If they wanted to show good visuals, they've could have tried a few new things to continue imagining the world of Tron. But Nothing, just maybe that little bar that looked like a normal bar.
Maybe the only thing I liked was the soundtrack, but anyway. You don't make good sequels by using the same elements of the first one, just remember the Toy Story franchise guys.

I had fun with this film...although I must say I find the character Quorra interesting, not what she did in the film but....she just poped into reality. Its apropiate that she was called a bird because he is no doubt the biggest bird to have ever been fliped at reality and religion, this may be me exagurating but I can only imagine that all things religion would go into a mad rage over this, scentisst will get their chance to reinact Splash, the military will of course want in on the action for a "make yourself army" and even Encom will more than likely become one of those steriotypical evil orgnisations you find in Highlander 2....and hte network would go into metldown. But hey that's just me.

I just saw that today. Could not help but feel a bit ripped off by the lack of Tron. Light cycle and fight sequences were so awesome, as they should be.
And how is it they have food in that world?
I liked the idea about the ISOs, how they emerged from the system. Wish they would explore that more and had less little plot holes and "just how is that supposed to work?" moments in the story.
