I was going to watch this movie but since you said it sucked I wont give it the light of day
Please, tell me you're being sarcastic
This was an amazing film that was one of the best movies of the summer, let alone the year
It touched on Apartheid in South Africa (not just racism), an issue barely discussed in Hollywood today, featured great performances, especially from the guy who played Wikus, took place in a setting, South Africa, that Hollywood rarely shows us, and was an actual dark reflection on our nature as species, but that there is still hope for us.
Several themes and ideas are not original, that's true. But writer - director Neil Blomkampf (sp) utilizes them in new and intriguing ways so that they still feel fresh.
And when the robot suit is used in the end, it isn't just a "let's blow up some shit good" moment a lesser writer or director could've succumbed to. Instead, it's an organic part of character development that help redeem an otherwise bastardly character.
In conclusion, this movie was great. 5 stars, Full Price, whatever. It wasn't perfect, but it was damn good, and a shame to miss out on.
side note nit pick: xmen, while initially about racism, is now more about homophobia.

Couldn't agree more. This movie was brilliant, I'm actually a little angry that Doug said those things about it. I think everyone should check it out, and don't compair it to bloody Transformers because it's in a totally different league. I know this show is supposed to be funny and it's only opinion and so on, but there were so many other things and layers going on. This is what makes it original, seeing a scifi movie that isn't just about special effects or someone in Hollywood massaging their ego. I'm starting not to find this show funny anymore, so there!

-
09.12.2009 - 19:01 | catiescarlettI was actually going to mention that too... I got into R rated movies at 12 or 13 all the time without a parent. I just ran into a couple of theaters where they actually carded me... Including one that carded me when I was a college sophomore... *laughs* That one got me!

I thought it entertained, though. And that's what a movie should do.
You are right though, you'd need both hands to count how many movies it ripped off on your fingers.

This movie made me really mad when I watched it, and it had plot holes the size of craters. Still, I somewhat enjoyed it even with the flaws and such. But there's just one problem I have with Chester's review...
Why the hell didn't you throw in an interspecies prostitution joke? It couldn't have possibly been below you!. ; )

-
This movie its great!!! Why everybody has to say "Yes becose it riped off all clasic movies and BLA BLA BLA" if it has all that element is becose it was inspired by those!!! You Dummys.
Well you like it or not, this is the greatest movie i ever see in my life!!!

09.09.2009 - 20:29 | SignNinjaChester A. Bum, son of Chester A. Bum, I've been waiting for you.

want to be the person who says this with you but to be perfectly honest. Your full of shit with this one Chester. District 9 ruled and the supposed "plot holes" are nothing of the sort. (and the whole ripping movies off angle? not true at all.)
So my personal tastes prevented me from really liking this review but whatever. I still love your reviews and this site. And I respect your right to have a differing opinion. But I just don't buy your arguement.
Go ahead, downvote me for disagreeing. I'm sorry but you haven't convinced me that District 9 was a bad movie.

09.21.2009 - 13:41 | LEDzDam right. District 9 was good. maby not jurassic park or Godfather good, but still . it was good.
And its true that it borows many elements from other movies but wich movie didnt? star wars include a lot of things taken from previous films or stories or whatver, and it kick serius asses
I still like the Bum tough, the wolvereen video was hillarious, amongs others
-
05.06.2010 - 17:09 | Filmguy450Like the movie, not like the movie, whatever. But saying that it didn't rip off any other films is dead wrong and utterly stupid.

-
09.09.2009 - 20:31 | LundarigirlWelcome back Chester. It's been a while.
As for District 9, for me it was to gory to be entertaining. But though it did rip off a lot of movies, it did it in such a way to make it seem original.
-
09.09.2009 - 20:31 | trigger12
Wow, i guess it is a bit too inspired, but at the same time inspiration off the things, is baisically how you make something origenal, by fusing them to gether, or maybe reverse one or two of the ideas.
Its probubly origenal, becuase all of it is put to gether like that, in a certain way. Plus, we've never seen a movie where aliens are evicted from the slums.
well, just think about it, have you watched Scarface? Heat? Or the Terminator? There spinoffs of really simple things......okay, just terminator was. bad group choice. ;p
:side: :silly: :s :pinch:
-
We havn't seen aliens in the slums because I thought that us meeting GOD DAMN ALIENS wouldn't be stupid enough just to toss them to the side and try to forget about them and be majorly racist to them
Maybe I don't get it but I didn't like it
Star Wars can rip off something well
District 9... Not so well
